In Bad Faith: New Study Further Underscores Lack of Truth in Anti-Choice Claims
One of the most frustrating parts of dealing with the modern conservative movement is their incredibly practiced disingenuousness. From a bunch of white people denying racism while pushing racist policies to a bunch of straight people claiming that they want to ban gay marriage not because they hate gays, but because they love “traditional marriage,” the constant pose of the modern right winger is one of bad faith.
Nowhere is this more true than when it comes to the anti-choice movement. Despite arsons, vandalism and occasional assassinations, anti-choice activists demand the right to label their movement “non-violent.” And despite the fact that the movement is organized by religious people whose religion teaches that women should be constrained to traditional gender roles and that sex outside of marriage (or for pleasure instead of procreation) is wrong, anti-choicers cry foul if you suggest that their activism against women’s liberation or sexual freedom somehow is rooted in opposition to women’s liberation or hostility to sex.
All this means that liberals have to spend a lot of time collecting evidence that conservatives are arguing in bad faith. Some times that takes the form of catching them in moments of honesty when they’re only speaking to their fellow travelers, and their relaxed state allows racist or sexist language to fly. And some times that means proving that it’s literally impossible for someone who claims to be accepting of liberal value like anti-sexism or anti-racism to hold the views that conservatives do.
That’s what the recent study where researchers compiled national statistics on abortion and childbirth and found that childbirth is 14 times more dangerous than abortion. This is common information that’s been known a long time. Obviously, the point of the study was not to position abortion as the preferable choice to childbirth in every case. As Amanda Hess argues, this is about showing what big, fat liars anti-choicers are. Anti-choicers disingenuously claim that their support for TRAP laws is rooted in concern for women’s health, and they paint abortion as an incredibly dangerous procedure to justify themselves. But in reality, if they got rid of safe, legal abortion, that would mean more women dying, just from sheer number-crunching on childbirth vs. abortion. And that’s not even counting the rapid escalation in maternal mortality that occurs when safe, legal abortion is illegal or unavailable because of women trying to abort at home.
As Robin Marty found, anti-choice activists don’t give up their lies so readily, of course. She collected an article from Catholic Culture that basically said, “Nuh-uh,” and tried to deflect being called out for one lie with another, this time falsely insinuating that abortion causes mental illness and breast cancer. Both of these claims have been thoroughly debunked by science. That anti-choicers would so readily lie about science shouldn’t be surprising; modern conservatism is hostile to the truth overall, but science’s ability to get the facts straight is something conservatives have been increasingly revolting against, whether it’s with regards to evolution, global warming, or in this case, abortion.
When presented with irrefutable evidence that their supposed concern for women’s health is a big, fat lie, your average anti-choicer starts to deflect and start talking about the fetus. While pro-choicers don’t recognize fetuses as having greater rights to a woman’s body than she has, it’s worth noting that anti-choicers are also arguing in bad faith when they hide behind their supposed concern for the fetus. Genuine hostility to abortion because of the fetus would result in wanting to take effective action to lower the abortion rate. That would mean not banning abortion, since abortion rates are generally higher where abortion is illegal. That would mean advocating for comprehensive sex education and contraception, both of which prevent unintended pregnancy and therefore abortion. That would mean no more looking at Western Europe, with its relatively low abortion rates, and claiming we want to be nothing like them. Anti-choicers do the opposite of all these things, and have a special fondness for trying to raise the abortion rate by reducing contraception access, as demonstrated by the attacks on federal subsidies for contraception that nearly shut down the federal government last year.
So, anti-choicers don’t care about women and they don’t really care about fetuses. You can add “children” to that list, as well, since most women getting abortions do so in part so that they can provide for the children they already have or wait to have children until they’re better able to care for them. So what do anti-choicers care about? Well, it’s not exactly men as human beings, because many men support legal abortion and make the decision to abort with their partners. But anti-choicers do care very much for traditional gender roles, and shoving men and women into them whether we like it or not. They see forced birth as an excellent weapon in the war on fading gender norms and increasing freedom for both men and women to do what we like instead of follow some gender script.
Anti-choicers often paint vivid fantasies of forced childbirth causing young couples to eschew single life and to get married, so that they stop making anti-choicers jealous with their youth and relative freedom to sleep around and experiment before settling down. Sure, forced childbirth often doesn’t work out how they imagine things should go, shotgun wedding-style. Some women are abandoned by their partners, and some women are so hostile to marrying their partners that they end up as single mothers. Many shotgun weddings result in unhappy marriages that end in divorce. But while these are less than ideal outcomes, they don’t particularly bother the average anti-choicer, who views them as your just punishment for having sex outside of their narrow prescriptions.
Just don’t believe the feigned concern for women or children. When you look at what anti-choicers do rather than what they say, it becomes clear that when it comes to actual people, the anti-choice movement doesn’t give a hoot.

Show AllAll of this has been true for all the more than 40 years I've been an activist feminist. It has been in some ways the liberals in our own movement who have assisted the right by calling it the Right to Choose movement Instead of say human rights for women or self determination for women and thereby giving credence to the idea that it is some lifestyle choice one makes instead of what most women say when they come for abortion which is "I felt like I had no choice."Originally we called for free abortion on demand and should have stuck with that instead of letting the marketers take over the movement. What got us abortion rights was a vocal, active and in the streets movement. I think we lost a lot of ground with so many young women reacting to the backlash and not wanting to be called a feminist or the feel good feminism of the 90's that thought marching in the streets was too strident. The only thing that matters here is our consolidating our power. We need an active vocal women's movement again. While blogs are certainly a good contribution to the movement they won't replace action and numbers of women willing to get our there again and fight for our rights.
The right always lies and we should not even pretend to debate them. Just keeping pointing out that they kill doctors, love war, and hate social spending on children. Liberals are wasting their time on research to prove something to someone. In this media no one cares. Lets use our own strongest arguments and stop trying to get points from the ridiculous mainstream media.
Very well written and I agree. The liberals have to go on the offensive. When I had read this article, I was reminded of the difference between real feminists and political theater drama queens. It will take not only a strong unity of women but also cooperation from enough of us men to see to it that feminism prevails.
"The constant pose of the modern right winger is one of bad faith."
This is a centrally important fact about politics today. The increasing number of people who are willing to talk about this openly is a hugely positive development. Gradually the population IS becoming aware of this.
It's also important to understand the motives of this. Ultimately it's for money, and to that end it's also for the political control that enables the really big money scams. Ultimately it's headquartered in Wall Street.
The connections are being drawn, and once they are clear to enough people Wall Street's self-serving lies and control will collapse.
Liked your post more than article. Women in Syria and Libya have led the way fearlessly, go girls! Cowards stop running when the ladies stand, soldiers find it harder to kill mothers; great is your power, wield it. I'll be with you in spirit, as the flesh rebels against me.
The hypocrisy I find most stunning comes when after childbirth the forced-childbirthers want nothing more to do with child and mother.
The basis of their beliefs goes back to the Old Testament of the Bible. At that time, the Jews were a small country with an equally small population surrounded by bigger countries with larger populations. Their only hope of survival was to breed up as many "spear carriers" as they could to defend the country. Thus, anything that tended to reduce the birth rate was outlawed. Therefore the Old Testament was opposed to abortion, contraception, masturbation, homosexuality, lesbianism simply because all these tended to reduce the numbers of children born. Fewer children, fewer men for the army. Later on, the Catholic Church realized that if you want power, you want large numbers of people who are "believers". Thus the Catholic Church is opposed to abortion, contraceptive, sterilization, masturbation, anything that would again reduce the number of children born. Again, in the case of the "pro-life" people, you will see that they are not only opposed to abortion, but they are also opposed to contraception, masturbation, sterilization, along with homosexuality and lesbianism. Again, the idea is to "out breed" your "enemy". The birth rate tends to be higher in "red state" states than in "blue state" states.
An interesting aspect of this (showing that these people do not think logically) is that they are opposed to welfare, health care for children, anything that would require them to pay more taxes. This is mainly due to the fact that these people are generally "conservative" and believe in "social darwinism". (survival of the fittest)
Anyone with their head screwed on right understands that abstinence only is completely unfounded in science as it totally disregards the hormone equation. That also includes the No Abortion/No Contraception ideology. And, in addition to those falicies there is never any discussion of Over Population, which, just for the sake of argument should be the number one concern for everyone, not just the ProLifers. All of the time spent by the right making decisions about women's health (mostly by men) has absolutely nothing to do with understanding and making informed decisions about running a country. Nothing at all!
You will find that none of these people believe in "global warming", or any other environmental concept. To them "overpopulation" is something that happens in "third world countries". Not here in the USA. You might also learn through study that there really isn't as much of a difference between Christian fundamentalists, Jewish fundamentalists, and Muslim fundamentalists such as are found in the Middle East. In all three religions women are considered "property". First of their fathers, then of their husbands. Christians, when given absolute power, behave little better than Muslims do. And in Israel, Jewish fundamentalists behave like Muslims regarding women's attire. The Catholic Church killed people when it had the power just like the Taliban does there in Afghanistan. Religious fundamentalists are always opposed to freedom wherever they are. Whatever religion they happen to believe in. It is simply the nature of these people to be that way. Going by statistics, a good portion of US military people are drawn from portions of the country where religious fundamentalism is common. So we have the interesting example of American Christian fundamentalists killing Afghan Muslim fundamentalists there in Afghanistan.

Truer words never spoken, yet spoken so rarley. Thank you!
Numbrer One Concern; root of all major problems, from Unemp. to Cliimate. The boat is getting full; 7 Billion people is too damn many! If we survive the current Extinction Event, (doubtful), we'd best learn to breed like Pandas, Very Rarely!
Excellent writing and framing. The author takes apart the lies of the forced birthers.

The Republicans have however developed a new tactic. Attempting to reduce the number of people who are allowed to vote through "Voter Picture ID". Sounds harmless enough until you realize that you are being asked to prove that you are indeed an American citizen by producing a birth certificate. By proving that you actually do have a legal residence. Looking at the requirements here in the State of Michigan is enlightening. Not everyone has a birth certificate. especially elderly minorities in the south. Perhaps you were forclosed on and you don't have a legal residence right now. Or if married can you produce your marriage license? Divorce papers if divorced? Then if you are a student going to college, well, your college ID won't be enough under state law. The list of requirements is much like what would be required to obtain a passport. For a lot of people this will be a big "hassle". If you are elderly and have a hard time getting around, you might also have problems here. Idea of course is to eliminate the poor, the elderly, the minorities, students from voting because they are more likely to vote Democratic. This is what the Republican Party is attempting to do. If it can't win an election honestly, then it will CHEAT! Copy what the states in the south did by denying blacks the right to vote, except this time apply this to as many people as possible. As Republicans are more likely to be white, not poor, not elderly, the party feels it can win elections this way that it couldn't otherwise win...
As usual Ms. Marcotte is misinformed. A recent article by Dr.Priscilla Coleman in the prestigious British Journal of Psychiatry noted the following:" 22 studies published between 1995 and 2009, including 877,181 women from six counties, found women with a history of abortion faced 34% higher rates of anxiety and 37% higher depression, 110% heavier alcohol use, 230% more marijuana use, and 155% higher rates of suicidal behavior. Such women were 55% more likely to have mental health problems than similar women who had an unplanned pregnancy but didn't abort."
Now show me your science, then go in ....
Peace
From the Article- } 'Researchers compiled national statistics on abortion and childbirth and found that childbirth is 14 times more dangerous than abortion...' {
If that is to even be believed then by this author's logic everybody should just get sterilized at birth &/or each & every pregnancy terminated by abortion- for women's health reasons [Hey girl don't you know it 14Xs safer to abort than to have a baby!]. Of course if that happens then the entire human race would probably go extinct within 2 generations- But Hey- according to this author's pretzel-logic- her notion of women's so-called 'reproductive choice' should take precedence.
It is simply true that childbirth is a dangerous process. In the 19th and early 20th century many women died young in childbirth and the rate is much better now but still higher than from abortion. Women still have children. Life has risks and one chooses priorities.
We are hardly in danger of going extinct. Its more the other way round; we are overpopulating and causing many other species to go extinct through destroying habitat and massive industrial pollution supported by corporate law.
This author failed to talk about the documented health risks to women who don't have any children [IE: increased risk of breast & ovarian cancer]. Plus we're not talking about the 1800's nor the first half of the 1900s- this is 2012! So even if that study's data is actually legit [more on that below] we should be asking the question why & how in this age of 21st century medicine USA- is having an abortion in the US 14Xs safer than giving birth?
But if you read the Reuters Health article referenced by Ms Marcotte about abortion being 14Xs safer than child-birth one sees that the GUTTMACHER Institute was a major player in this study [from the article: 'The researchers of the new study combined government data on live births and pregnancy- with ESTIMATES of abortion-related deaths for legal abortions performed in the US from the Guttmacher Institute...']. It just so happens that the GUTTMACHER Institute is closely associated w the Planned Parenthood Association of America {PPFA} whose founder actually sat on PPFA’s board. Thus one might suspect that they used cherry-picked the data [such a large disparity in risks {@ 14 to 1} between giving birth & abortions- indicates that’s likely so]. But how could they cherry-pick data to get these results? Potentially by comparing child-birth death rates from medical facilities that specialize in handling hi-risk pregnancies &/or service primarily Black, Brown & poor pregnant women w ESTIMATED {IE: extrapolated} abortion risks from abortion clinics w the safest tract-records!
Then there's this quote from the article; } 'An induced abortion- Requires INFORMED Consent from the Woman, said Dr. Bryna Harwood, an ob-gyn from the Univ of IL @ Chicago. What makes it complicated, Harwood added, is when the law interferes and requires doctors to state information that isn't always balanced or medically sound- usually exaggerating the risk of abortion...' { - IMO: This is the hidden purpose of this study [& why Ms Marcotte referenced it]- to fight against laws requiring doctors to fully inform women {AND GIRLS often without parental consent} of associated risks before performing an abortion.
IMO: The over-population meme is over-hyped- BUT You Are Correct that massive industrial pollution & accidents [IE: the BP Gulf oil spill & Fukushima] is threatening the eco-sphere & extinction for various flora & fauna [& potentially even man himself].
You will also find many of these mandatory motherhood folks, though they keep it out of their PR, are incredibly worried that they will be out populated by brown people whose birth rate is higher. We need most strongly to stay on our message because it is the one that doesn't get out there.
Note My Comment Above...
A young feminist gave me this button: Abstinence makes the Church grow fondlers
Seems there are quite a few people out there who think the Catholic church is responsible for every individuals problems. Lack of personal responsibility is not the fault of the Catholic church. Take responsibility for the things in your life you can control... stop asking for a social bailout for personal irresponsibility.
What we know as the great black feminist Flo Kennedy told us is that: If men got pregnant abortion would be a sacrament.
Organized Religions make dull, stupid people. By focusing on the afterlife they negate the only real life you have. Neitzsche called 'em DeathCults (my trnslatn)
said all priests are parasites. Org. Religions produce "Herds", ox fond of the yolk,
slaves who love their chains;Stockholm Syndrome PTSD cases too often even, and of late "Killer Sheeple", Soldiers of God, Crusaders; or Nazis? slaughtering kids around the world for God. This shit needs to END! Church loved Adolph, et. al.
