Skimming the (S)cream Off the WikiLeaks Terror Accusations
Here in the United States of Fear, official voices are again rising in a remarkable crescendo of hysteria.
My advice: don't even try getting on the subway car filled with American politicians and their acolytes accusing WikiLeaks and Julian Assange of terrorist activity. It's already standing room only. Among those who have recently spoken out: Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell ("I think the man is a high-tech terrorist"); former speaker of the House and possible 2012 presidential candidate Newt Gingrich ("information terrorism... [Assange] should be treated as an enemy combatant"); Republican Congressman Peter King, the next head of the House Homeland Security Committee ("...asked the Obama administration today to ‘determine whether WikiLeaks could be designated a foreign terrorist organization'"); former Republican Senator and possible 2012 presidential candidate Rick Santorum ("We haven't gone after this guy, we haven't tried to prosecute him, we haven't gotten our allies to go out and lock this guy up and bring him up on terrorism charges, because what he's doing is terrorism, in my opinion."); Fox News host, Iran-Contra figure, and bestselling author Oliver North ("This is an act of terrorism. It's information terrorism instead of a bomb going off in Times Square, but it's still terrorism.")
And that's just to skim the (s)cream off the top of the terror accusations boiling out of this Congress and Republican presidential ranks. It's quite a brew, especially when you add in senators like Joe Lieberman and Diane Feinstein calling for Assange to be prosecuted under the Espionage Act of 1917 and figures like Sarah Palin calling for him to simply be taken out as a terrorist, pure and simple ("Why was he not pursued with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders?")
Here, however, is a small catch. If this is "terrorism," a question arises (or at least should arise): Who has been terrorized? Who exactly has been terrified by the recent WikiLeaks releases of, so far, more than 1,000 State Department documents, some going back decades? The answer, I think, is clear enough -- not the American people, but the Washington elite who have, in these last years, put in place a version of secrecy so wide-ranging that most of the government's significant operations abroad (and many at home) have been cast into the shadows beyond the sightlines of the voters in this supposed democracy.
Within the penumbra of spreading secrecy, that elite, sometimes aided and abetted by the mainstream media, has acted with remarkable impunity in invading other countries, kidnapping"
And don't think it's just a matter of Julian Assange or WikiLeaks in the gun sights either. The Espionage Act of 1917, under which Assange may be charged, was a classic suppressive response to antiwar opposition during World War I. It remains dangerous. Prosecuting Assange under it or any other terror statute would indeed prove an ominous development. It would have -- and I'm not one for throwing around totalitarian analogies -- a distinctly Soviet feel to it. Julian Assange may be the one they are coming after right now, but he's unlikely to prove the end of it. After all, if you're the next one to give them a fright, you, too, could be declared a terrorist or an enemy combatant (even if you do work for the New York Times). As TomDispatch regular Stephan Salisbury points out in his latest piece, "Terrorama," the rhetoric of terror has entered the American bloodstream and it's going to be the rage (so to speak) of the new Congress in 2011.

Show AllTruth is terrorism ? Facts are terrorism?
Maybe we should try and determine what is NOT terrorism as the list seems to be a heck of a lot shorter.
.
Some folks might be interested to know that apparently the shutting down of news media outlets is being expanded by the US and its lapdog, the UK. I'm watching George Galloway on Press TV (Iranian English TV), and the UK government has frozen its bank account in the UK. Also apparently Wikileaks has documents showing the UK government government stated that it wants to hamper Press TVs operations.
I have not watched Press TV a lot, but as far as what I watched it seems to be a legitimate 24 hour news outlet, obviously from an Iranian point of view, but lets face it that is what EVERY countries media outlets are.
I remember several years ago when I first got the FTA satellite setup, Almanar used to broadcast on Galaxy19. They would have a half hour news show in English which was pretty informative, especially about what was going on with the Iraq war. The American government labeled them a terrorist organization and shut down the signal from the satellite.
Yea, the US is a bastion of free speech as long it's the government or the corporations doing the talking. Everybody else should just STFU...
Great article Tom- direct and to the point. Cheers...
Yes very well written, and concise. I liked the liberal use of hyperlinks so you could read further for more detailed background if you wanted to, and still if you didn't you could still get his point.
IMHO, it would be wonderful if some of the longer winded writers that we read here would adopt this style.
Terrorism has, of course, become a catchall for every repressive thing the powers that be want to institute in our vastly increasing police state existence. Just check this out from Wisconsin:
http://www.jsonline.com/watchdog/watchdogreports/111900139.html
It's always the same to; if it's not about national security and protecting us from terrorists and immigrants, it's about protecting the children and preventing fraud and abuse. The increasing use of invasive spying, searching, cataloging, inhibiting and general interference in our day to day existence may actually lead us to be unable to leave this country beyond just having a passport - think Soviet Union at its height of "national security" madness.
"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me."
----Martin Niemoller, German Protestant Pastor, Nazi Concentration Camp survivor
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross."
Niemoller didn't and couldn't have said that they first came for the "socialists". He knew, and you should know too, that they first came for the Communists. And he said so. In fact, every fascist dictatorship has always come for the Communists first. That should tell you something. The reason it isn't happening today is because the Communist Party is effectively dead.
Think Salem, MA 1692. Picture Sarah Palin standing in the back of a pickup cruising down main street followed by paddy wagons to load up on the accused terrorist Sarah points out. The crowds will cheer her on, thank her, bless her for saving them from the terrorist while at the same time shaking with fear that they might be the next one she points out.
I'm having a hard time imagining a pickup truck in 1692.
Pickup buggy?
WIDEOF: I see a hybrid of the Salem Witch-hunts coupled with a new McCarthyism phase, only the 21st century version is equipped with powerful forms of surveillance.
We may joke about all these political personae speaking fast and loose to undermine the "presumed innocence" of Julian (judging him to be guilty without any premise of a trial); but it will be lots more of these rabid imbeciles with added powers of state at their disposal soon positioned to further shred the Constitution and basic civil liberties.
Renew your passports, friends.
Siouxrose:
With my renewed passport, I'm not sure where one could go to escape the High Tech Imperial Secret Government's clutches. Can Hugo Chavez provide safe haven for all American dissenters? Is there a friendly government anywhere that isn't dependent on U.S. so-called "foreign aid"?
In a couple years time I hope to be able to relocate to the Philippines where my wife's family wants to care for us in our old age according to the sweet cultural tradition there. Don't know if we'll make it for that long.
I'm afraid we're stuck here since the world is indeed a global village and the village chieften's do not have the villagers' interests at heart.
I'm afraid we have no real choice but to stay here and let it play out. I will continue to joke about the political personae because jokes are the only real weapon I have even though I'm well aware that only those who pretty much agree with me will "get it" and laugh. My one real fear is that things will happen that will be so bad that my sense of humor will get sick and die. Then and only then will I not want to keep on keepin' on.
I keep hoping historical karma will kick in and reading your posts in hopes, if there really are are powers beyond human intelligence (my inner jury is still out), that you'll have influence with them. They, like earthpeople, don't seem much inclined to listen to me.
PARANOID: Good points. I don't have the answer, location-wise. It's clear that many of the "big brother" tactics the U.S. and its martial forces utilize are being exported. Today's article by Johann Hari is a case in point.
Fifteen years ago I helped a friend of mine from Key West relocate to Miami where she befriended an elderly woman who still had the concentration camp numbers imprinted on her wrist. The woman told my friend, "Don't think it couldn't happen here." Like Sinclair Lewis' words, it has that same eerie echo. Still, I never thought things would get this bad, and we've only got the "Black Actor" as opening act. What's being invited next up on stage, is like fascists wearing Country Bumpkin styles.
Sometimes I wonder if hell has come to earth.
My sister and I were discussing the insanity going on and she said that she never believed in evil, as an entity like Satan, but now was beginning to wonder. I agreed that evil had taken hold in a way that's never been so evident in my lifetime. She thinks the balance has altered so that the Dark Side really does have control of the earth plane (that is, mundane events) at the present time. Evidence supports this contention; however, while the gears of karma may turn slowly (and too slow for those of us in real or financial pain)... they DO turn.
"This, too, shall pass." Where it's best to endure THE passing; that is yet to be determined, and operates as a personal decision at best.
Good luck to you and your relatives. At least you have an invitation elsewhere!
I still do not believe in an immortal entity such as satan that is evil and needs to or wants to interfere and manipulate mortals, ( and vice versa for an immortal "good" god) but the universe is a constant dance between, good and evil or light and dark or however you wish to label the duality we experience. And it does appear that there are times when one force or the other is dominant, but is what we, in this place (America) and time (early 21st century) experience, actually true for all other humans, that we of course haven't met or know what is up with them except through the filters of our propaganda?
I imagine for all peoples throughout the world and history, that when things are really bad for them they probably feel that the world is an evil dark place. We have the benefit of instant communications now and things that may not have been heard of for days, weeks or months before are now bombarding us 24/7 and makes it seem, for end time people especially, that these are the end times, when much of what we see now largely went unseen or experienced in times past. Plus, we seem to forget that actually a very small percentage of the peoples in the world are connected to the internet or suffering from tech madness.
I try to believe as you say, that this too shall pass, and the passing may be exceedingly difficult and I may not even survive it, but this is one step on a very likely infinite journey of infinite steps. I would wish, though, that so many didn't have to suffer and feel the sorrow and helplessness that is intentionally being heaped on. I am hopeful that the pendulum will swing the other way when there are open and caring people such as yourself who are able to keep their balance while teetering one way or the other and share their thoughts with others in a positive, life-affirming way.
Why stop at Palin? Doesn't the Democratic Party give you the creeps too?
Not just Palin, but basically any "leader" that has the charismatic tough-guy (or gal) attitude that the American sheeple seem to worship (W. anyone?). You are correct - sooooo many Americans will turn into good little Germans at the drop of a hat if the right mix of "leadership" and fear-mongering is used to push all their paranoid buttons. They will gladly provide the rope and the gallows, and scream with froth on their lips along with the rest of the mob. This is how democracy is dying in the U.S. (if not already completely dead) - with the full, enthusiastic participation of its sheep citizens.
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross."
I think people in positions of power calling for untried citizens of other nations to be murdered is 'terrorism'.
On behalf of Canada I would like to apologise for Tom Flanagan, the dipshit toady of Harper who felt the need to swell his testes by blurting apish threats.
He's not much of a man and no representative of the feelings of most Canadians.
But I would never call for him to be assassinated for his ignorance. You can't teach a dead man anything.
That's what I can't figure out about Canada. With all its enlightened people, how did it pick such a dunderhead as Harper to lead the country?
Only 30% of Canadians voted for Harper and 70% of us got stuck with him!!! The vast majority of Canadians do NOT endorse this man!
Well, we "elected" GW Bush for two terms.
Jim Shea
... and he needed only five votes.
SCrOTUS elected Dubya to his first term, but we voters do deserve credit for his second.
With a LOT of "help" from corrupt Republican election officials in Ohio in Nov. 2004.
Maybe not. What Happened in Ohio?

(ED beat me to the punch, I see.)
The 30 percent was ALL police and law enforcement personnel in Canada, coast to coast to coast.

I highly recommend sending your condolences to the President of the University of Calgary that this unfortunate man [sarcasm alert] has internationalized the university through the media as a backwater for cultivating potential Fox News pundits. Unbelievable!
For the record, Flanagan is an American. He just works and resides in Canada.
Information terrorism? This is the lowest order of bunk. It's a sick joke. Besides, there is a legal definition of terrorism under the law. This fails--miserably--to qualify.

(iii) section 2780 (d) of this title.
Sorry Newt and Ollie (you guys should really form a comedy team), it may make a good talking point for the perpetually petrified toadies of the National Security State, but the law refers to terrorism specifically as violence. Exposing war crimes and the illegal activities of governments and government officials is not violence. It's using your powers for good, ostensibly to reduce violence. Of course, that is a concept so foreign to most of those who weighed in with such preposterous opinions, that they may not recognize or understand it.
Sticks and stones, folks, sticks and stones.
Absolutely outstanding comment, pwayne.
I wish I had written it.
Jim Shea
yeah, well, nobody cares. welcome to the new world, hippy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW7hyWs7RAY&NR=1&feature=fvwp
Who are you talking to?
It's not that nobody cares. Just nobody in a position to do anything about it. You're not alone but you might as well be.
Tom asks:" Who has been terrorized " ? The Washington elite, that's who. I agree with one caveat, and that is that by going ballistic in the whore MSM 24/7 it is also a way to demonize the net so that the Washington elites can control it by legislating an internet, patriot act or something similar. They probably had one already drafted and were just waiting for the window of opportunity, like 911.
"the whore MSM"
Don't insult whores
I agree EZ. Whores are like angels compared to what is called the Main Stream Media!
hey easy
a sign just went up in my home town
brothels ->

folks knew where they were
seems the ladies of the night

i think they would say

Obama is front and center in all of this.
It is he, who has gone after whistleblowers and locked them up.
It is he, who has vastly expanded the War in Afghanistan, and Pakistan (of course it is a war).
It is he, with his DHS Secretary that paved the way for Chertoff's money making venture, in the form of full body scanners, and more aggressive TSA procedures.
It is he, who will go after Assange ultimately, as his DOJ dusts off the Espionage Act.
He is a right-winger, period.
Spot on.
Good article. By equating exposing truth with terrorism, the political leaders mentioned graphically show they can never be trusted to tell the truth.
What goes around comes around...
Mr. Assange’s predicament aside, it is not far-fetched to assume that the awesome machinery of a failing empire the size of ours is eventually tempted to unleash the full force of its remarkable power and fury against all whom it opposes, including those dissidents, if any, found among its own people.
As for the "elite", their sentiments are echoed by too many "fellow Americans" without whom they could not carry on with their charade of a "democratic trick" and who willingly help fund, obey, and cheer on their "dominant paradigm."

"After all, if you're the next one to give them a fright, you, too, could be declared a terrorist or an enemy combatant (even if you do work for the New York Times)."
That's the whole point, right? Set a precedent by going after people like Assange or organizations like Wikileaks. Once the precedent is set it'll be much easier to go after recalcitrant elements within the N.Y. Times, Newsweek, etc.
First Amendment R.I.P.
I imagine that there are still individual reporters in the mainstream who do their jobs the right way and attempt to get important info out to the public, marginalized as they may be.
newbie December 16th, 2010 3:20 pm -- Good point.
Palin sez: "Why was (Assange) not pursued with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders?"
***
I would submit he was pursued with far more urgency than those comparison groups. After all, the empire actually caught Assange.
Terrorits are people who use violence, or the threat of violence, against civilians for ideological, political, religious, ethnic, or other such reasons.
The real terrorists are those who funded, and still fund, the wars of aggression against the people of Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia, and the threat of war against the people of Iran and North Korea.
These terrorists are the members of the Bush and Obama administrations; the Congresses who went along with these immoral, illegal, insane, murderous policies; those who voted for these war criminals; and the war profiteers and media which supported and still supports their policies as they count their blood-stained profits and obscenely-high corporate bonuses.
U.S. forces have killed more than one million people and made more than 4 million refugees since October, 2001. This is terrorism approaching genocide. Jihadist Muslim/Al-Qaeda terrorism is nowhere near as destructive as that of the U.S. and its NATO allies.
Until most people in the U.S. realize this truth, that the alleged "War on Terrorism" is actually a "War OF Terrorism", largely paid for by OUR precious, much-needed tax dollars, all the blather about "fighting terrorism" is bullshit.
Actually, the Iraq war goes back further.
Shrub #1 stared it.
Clinton bombed Iraq and because of economic sanctions, many Iraqis
starved to death and went without medical care/shelter--many children died.
The war in Iraq really began with Shrub #1 and has continued through Clinton, Shrub #2 and the Oily Bomber.
That our Justice dept. should be so interested in pursuing a journalist while having no interest whatsoever, from the outset, of prosecuting Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and friends for their war crimes and for treason against our constitution, is something I think about every single day since Assange turned himself in.
