Glenn Beck Needs a History Lesson on the Civil-Rights Movement
This is who 'we' really is, Glenn
``This is a moment,'' said Glenn Beck three months ago on his radio program, ``...that I think we reclaim the civil rights movement. It has been so distorted and so turned upside down. . . . We are on the right side of history. We are on the side of individual freedoms and liberties and damn it, we will reclaim the civil rights moment. We will take that movement, because we were the people that did it in the first place!''
Beck was promoting his Restoring Honor rally, to be held Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial, 47 years to the day after Martin Luther King famously spoke there. You'll notice he didn't define the ``we'' he had in mind, but it seems reasonable to suppose Beck was speaking of people like himself: affluent middle-aged conservatives possessed of the ability to see socialism and communism in places where it somehow escapes the notice of others.
If you agree that assumption is reasonable, then you must also agree Beck's contention that his ``we'' were the architects of the civil rights movement is worse than nonsensical, worse than mendacious, worse than shameless. It is obscene. It is theft of legacy. It is robbery of martyr's graves.
We're in an odd moment. Having opposed the freedom movement of the 20th century, some social conservatives seek, now that that movement stands vindicated and venerated, to arrogate unto themselves its language and heroes, to remake it in their image.
Thus, you get claims that ``racism'' is now what Shirley Sherrod said in a speech to the NAACP. And people calling Sarah Palin the new face of feminism. And conservatives touting the likelihood that King voted Republican -- as if the party in 1957 bore any resemblance to the party now.
But even by those standards, Glenn Beck's effrontery is monumental. Even by those standards, he goes too far. Beck was part of the ``we'' who founded the civil rights movement!? No. Here's who ``we'' is.
``We'' is Emmett Till, tied to a cotton gin fan in the murky waters of the Tallahatchie River. ``We'' is Rosa Parks telling the bus driver no. ``We'' is Diane Nash on a sleepless night waiting for missing Freedom Riders to check in. ``We'' is Charles Sherrod, husband of Shirley, gingerly testing desegregation compliance in an Albany, Ga., bus station. ``We'' is a sharecropper making his X on a form held by a white college student from the North. ``We'' is celebrities like Harry Belafonte, Marlon Brando and Pernell Roberts of Bonanza, lending their names, their wealth and their labor to the cause of freedom.
``We'' is Medgar Evers, Michael Schwerner, Jimmie Lee Jackson, James Reeb, Viola Liuzzo, Cynthia Wesley, Andrew Goodman, Denise McNair, James Chaney, Addie Mae Collins and Carole Robertson, shot, beaten and blown to death for that cause.
``We'' is Lyndon Johnson, building a legislative coalition of moderate Republicans and Democrats to defeat intransigent Southern Democratic conservatives and enshrine that cause into law.
And ``we'' is Martin Luther King, giving voice and moral clarity to the cause -- and paying for it with his life.
The we to which Glenn Beck belongs is the we that said no, the we that cried ``socialism!'' ``communism!'' ``tyranny!'' whenever black people and their allies cried freedom.
The fatuous and dishonorable attempt to posit conservatives as the prime engine of civil rights depends for success on the ignorance of the American people. Sadly, as anyone who has ever watched a Jay Walking segment on The Tonight Show can attest, the American people have ignorance in plenitude.
This, then, is to serve notice as Beck and his tea party faithful gather in Lincoln's shadow to claim the mantle of King: Some of us are not ignorant. Some of us remember. Some of us know very well who ``we'' is.
And, who ``we'' is not.

Show All"Glenn Beck's effrontery is monumental." Every day and in every way.
Rest easy, Mr. Pitts. There are many of us who know very well who "we" is and we stand with you to declare the truth.
There are not enough of us who know what the we stands for.
That is why this mothers douche bag sucking Bigot Beck has such a large audience and a paycheck to match.

Oh, I don't know about that, ZeroPointField.
Most Americans have a vicious streak in them and know perfectly well what Beck stands for.
Wouldn't the "we" also include SNCC, who Howard Zinn (teaching at a black women college in the South during the 1960's and heavily active in the Civil Rights movement) called the New Abolitionists in his book about the SNCC? The people in that group were radical, young and fearless. Wouldn't the "we" also be W.E.B. Dubois, a life long socialist? Frantz Fanon? His "Wretched of the Earth" was, according to Eldridge Cleaver, the "bible" amongst the radicals in the Black Panthers and the Civil Rights movement? Fred Hampton, a radical himself, killed by the FBI and the Chicago police in his youth. Aimé Césaire? His "Discourse on Colonialism" was extremely influential to those in the Civil Rights movement, especially Fanon. An interesting, radical and brave book. The right might not like it, but the Communist Party was also very much involved in the Civil Rights movement, long before it was called the Civil Rights movement. Many of their activists were killed in the South as a result of their activities. The Communist Party came to the defense of the Scottboro Boys as well. Rosa Parks was not some woman who one day got tired of sitting in the back of the bus. She was a member of the NAACP (founded by radicals on the left) and was a trained activist. She worked at the Highlander School, which was run by radicals as well. There are endless other examples, many of the people who made the Civil Rights movement possible were nameless and will never be known.
King himself, without a doubt, was a socialist. Coretta Scott King was interviewed shortly before she died. She said that the first time she met King he talked about social justice and the need to move towards some type of democratic socialism. He called for just that during a speech in 1965. He gave one of the strongest anti-imperialist speeches you will ever hear from someone as prominent as King in 1967 at Riverside Church. During that speech he called the US government the biggest purveyor of violence in the world, said that the US had gone to war time and time again as a result of the capitalists seeking profits and said that to be on the side of god we had to be on the side of social revolution. He wanted to have a poor people's march on DC to fight for social justice. He went to Memphis, where he was killed, to support the striking UNION workers. He knew the threats against him. Listen to his Mountaintop Speech. He knew the end was near, he was killed the next day.
Glenn Beck can rot in hell for pissing on the graves of these people. None of them would agree with Beck or what he stands for. If they did now what they did then they would be on his dumb little chalk board and he'd be denouncing them as Nazi commie pinkos. I believe in Karma, these types of things will catch up to him eventually.
There is a UAW/Rainbow Push Coalition rally in Detroit on the same day. The speakers will be covering real issues; jobs justice and peace. Sadly I doubt this event will get any press; while Beck’s hate fest is the talk of the town.
There's not a doubt in my mind that the mosque stupidity and the Beck-Palin rally are kept alive to keep people's attention off the tax debate, the possibility of a double dip recession, and as you say, jobs and peace. The seventy-five percent of the work force who have decent jobs, don't have a lot of time or energy to devote to studying the major issues, so it is the headlines that catch their eye, and it is Beck, Limbaugh and people like them who are feeding innuendoes and outright lies that politicians pick up and it is the politicians that MSM quote. And there you have the headlines.
Beck squawks that he wants our freedoms 'back.' Well, if I could I'd take away his free speech by putting duct tape over his lying mouth.
I wish everyone with a brain would just drop his show off their schedules. In no time, with the ratings drop, he would be dropped. As it is, he speaks, he's quoted, and the publicity runs his ratings up.

Sarad,
The reason these viewers will not drop Glenn's show is that they are uneducated or filled with a rage of ignorance. If you know what makes Glenn "Tick" you would understand. This whole event is going to be about "GLENN". It may be hard to follow the event, but watch as it is covered and Glenn to go for his great fame. He has taken falls before in the past and this one when it comes will be a doozie for Glenn. My brother is an Officer on a Tug boat, and the lower ranking personel (Alot of them being from Rural VA/NC/MD watch G.B. Religiously. They fear they are going to lose something under this current administration. They can't say what, but they believe everything G.B. Tells them. If you get time buy a copy of "Common Nonsense" .
Sadly we live in a country where a recent poll showed that 18% of the people think the sun revolves around the earth. Are we beyond hope?
Glenn Beck needs much more than a history lesson: he needs an education and proper upbringing.
Glenn Beck needs a lobotomy!
I'm pretty sure that he's already had one.

Glenn Beck has been taught racism...
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) cannot escape their racist past. For nearly 150 years, the Mormon Church had taught that ALL blacks were cursed. Hence, a black Mormon male could not hold the highly regarded LDS Priesthood because of his dark skin.
Living in Salt Lake area since 1974, I can say positively that you're spot on. Former President Gordon Hinkley advocated for the Iraq War. Look at Orrin Hatch's record, and you'll see that he's very eager for us and his nine kids to return to the stone ages.
For more on Mormonism, I recommend my deceased friend's pamphlet, that I put online:

daniel_g_061020_godwho_3a__thoughts_fr.htm
(I had to split the link to make it fit here, so you may have to patch it where it breaks)
Nearly all white Southern churches, before and after the 'War of Northern Aggression' could point to the Bible and prove that God, Himself, condones slavery. He does, the Bible does say so, but at least he puts a limit on the time served. So it's not just the Mormons who are guilty of past sins. Until the Civil Rights Movement, we whites accepted prejudices handed down to us without a thought, it was just the way it was.
gnken
Your right Chuck. As an Excommunicated LDS Member I know first Hand. Blacks were not allowed into the LDS church until the 70's if you can believe that. When I was a member in a Delaware Ward they had some blacks but many of the members outside of the services and some were vocal had comments of Blacks, Hispanics, Etc. During the services they were polite though. My Girl friend at the time I was a member, had parents and she herself were very racial. This was in Delaware if you can believe that.
I would say Glenn Beck is certifiably insane, except that there is nothing insane about his tactics, preying on the ignorance and self-importance of the reactionary affluent white class. If what he ultimately wants is a new and even more chaotic civil war in America, then that's what he's going to get.
--Joshua Hendrickson
joshua,
beck is batshit crazy and his neo nazi bullshit is dangerous. he should get a kick in the ass and a pie in the face for starters.
his neo nazi may cause a civil war in america but he will lose in the end.
above all else he should be off the air and denounced, riduculed and challenged every day. he needs to be told off in his face.
matt
It is a mistake to call people like Glenn Beck "crazy". This, in a great sense, lets him off the hook. He is not crazy - neither was Stalin or Hitler. Beck is stupid, evil and a monumental narcissist and sociopath . . . but he's not insane.
mordechai,
i agree with you. whatever the asshole says or does should never let him off the hook. alot of the shit he does(crying on air, that ridiculous chalkboard, and other)
make me think "he is a neonazi asshole and crazy at the same time". no wonder he is so popular. we have alot of other people in 'murka that want to be just like him.

Beck is worse than that, I think. He's an opportunistic 'shock jock' who cynically found a way to make a lot of money out of political mumbo-jumbo presented in the style of the late Professor Irwin Corey. I don't think he actually believes much of what he says (here I diverge from Alexander Zaitchek), and my argument is reinforced by the fact that he uses Vick's VapoRub under his eyes to help him tear up in his 'crying for his country' schtick. (See the video on YouTube.) He's still Mr. Morning Zoo DJ trying to come up with outrageous stunts to hold onto his immature male audience. Ironically, I think this latest goofy 'Restoring Honor' event may be his undoing -- if he can't pull a huge crowd, Murdoch may decide to drop him. (Fox is now losing ad revenue on his program.) Besides, how can you 'restore' something you never had in the first place?
'beck is batshit crazy and his neo nazi bullshit is dangerous.'
Joshua, you tagged Beck correctly, he is a neo-nazi and his ignorant naive followers are being duped into actions that, hopefully, they will later regret.
Beck is crazy but what he's trying to do is all part of that right wing tactic of turning civil rights back on the progressives. "Reverse racism" is part of that same ploy: It's as if they're saying, "Call us racists, will ya; we'll spin it in such a way as to portray YOU as the racists."
They're saying: We're not the bad guys, you are. And a lot of white people are glad to believe that because it takes them off the hook, relieves their unadmitted guilt.
True, Paranoid Pessimist, it's part of a tactic the right-wingers particularly enjoy: using the language and concerns of liberals against them. They did it in the Paula Jones case by crying crocodile tears that her civil rights in the workplace had been violated, the same civil rights that they have consistently opposed and ridiculed; they screamed that demonstrations critical of Junior Bush were treasonous during a time of war and then turned on a dime and proclaimed marches against Obama the patriotic exercise of free speech; recently Dr. Laura jumped the gun a little by asserting that she had the right to yell the N-word at a black woman because, well, I guess because we have a black president, but I have heard some variation on this notion that complete racial equality has now been achieved, so it's okay to be a vile white racist again. The hypocrisy, bile and sleaziness of the Rovian right-wing couldn't be contained by a bottomless pit.
Glenn Beck needs to take out his brain and replace it; even a snake brain would be an improvement.
I bet Leni Riefenstahl wishes she were still walking around so she could film her American version of "Triumph of the Will", showing Glenn Beck descending god-like from the clouds, like Hitler flying into Nuremberg.
Let us all pray that Beck and Palin do not incite bloody racial battles in our streets.
Glen Beck is born feb 10 1964
Sarah Palin is born feb 11 1964
It seems to be the year that latest set of leeches come from.
Any comments, Sioux Rose?

I do not know much about astrology, as that is Sioux Roses area of expertise, but I would say that Pluto must have been in conjunction with Luna. That is: the Plutocracy in conjunction with Lunacy!
ZERO: If you are sure of the dates, I sure DO have comments. Doesn't it disgust you when an Aquarian can betray the credo of their sign?
Aquarius is intended as the sign of universal brotherhood/sisterhood, or like Speilberg's film, radical "Amistad."
The true friend holds no negative judgment of another, even if that other walks a different path. Aquarius is supposed to foster wide tolerance... everyone in the world is my undiscovered friend.
These people are 2 of the most judgmental types imaginable; but then Ronald Reagan was also an Aquarian, born on February 6.
I remember looking up Ann Coulter's chart. I would have taken her for a Virgo because she's so into CATEGORIES. Well, turns out Ms. Coulter has her major planets in Sagittarius, which is the sign of publishing (and she's sure had luck with that!). She is rigid, as opposed to widely philosophical, because all those Sagittarius planets conflict with (square) her Pluto in Virgo.
Aquarians often are charismatic. They give people the feeling that they are their friends, and Palin and Beck both do manage to do this for the select group that self-identifies as being their friend(s).
I just looked up Feb 10-11, 1964... and by Jove, I've got it! (Said with a British accent.) They both have Moon in the authoritarian, Richard Nixon-Carl Rove-Herbert Hoover sign of Capricorn.
And when the moon is "behind" the sun, which is the case here, it is called the balsamic moon and indicates a submerging of emotions. Guess what that means? They do NOT feel. They have NO sense of empathy. The Capricorn moon is endlessly ambitious. I'm surprised Palin pulled off having a bunch of kids with that one!
Glenn has his Mercury (thought process) in Capricorn, which favors conservative thinkers. She has hers in Aquarius, and let's face, it, she's very odd... her choice of words, etc. As she gets older, she'll be MORE eccentric.
Here's the really interesting thing, they both have Mars in Aquarius. Typically this would generate a lot of interest in friends, social groups, and being the life of the party. BUT... they are both born with Mars and Saturn in what we term a conjunction, the astrological equivalent of "Siamese Twins."
Translation? The Mars principle of ego/self-interest is coupled with Saturn, the authoritarian planet and ruler of the Old Testament. They really see life as punitive, and they really think that because they are doing well, it means they have been lent God's own favor.
Most people who have Mars-Saturn locked into a tight bond grew up in either military families or extremely authoritarian ones.
Now the combination is very rule-oriented; however, since it takes place in rebellious, even radical Aquarius, the rules they adhere to will be their own. They do not see any distinction between "God's" rules and theirs!
I think that's enough astrology. You do know that by asking me this (and some appreciate these posts) that the small cast of detractors will soon show up to do what they can to burn me as a witch?
Nonetheless, tonight's moon in fiery Aries has me feeling bold... and just as Miles Davis inspired, It's "Round Midnight."
Time for me to hit that Neptune plane of dreams.
I would say that sums it up, nicely. SR
Sioux
Thanks so much for the enlightment.
What we now need is tips to counter these two, from hopefully astrological opposittes.

MAXIMUS: The whole point of my post was to show that it's not JUST about the sun sign. Moon signs are equally important. The fact that these two morally repugnant individuals both have Moon in Capricorn explains why they do not show any progressive characteristics.
Also, January 20 can produce Capricorns. The Vernal Equinox does not take place on the same date each year. It can be March 20, 21, or 22, and this is why we refer to the end-dates of signs as the "cusp."
Many moons ago I was invited to a Thanksgiving dinner in the Florida Keys, one of my favorite places on earth. I lived in Gainesville, Florida at the time, so had a ten-hour drive ahead of me, two daughters, included.
As fate would have it, during that same 10 hour drive, a gentleman was making a ten hour flight in from Hawaii. He was invited to that party, too.
We met, hit it off, and when I asked him his sign, he said Leo. It was only later that realizing he was born on July 22 I had to break the earth & cosmos-shattering news to him that he was in fact NOT a child of the Lion, but rather, a crab! I think that info shook his worldview!
And although I don't have my resource book before me (nor can I find it lately), I recall that Bogart was a Capricorn. It goes so well with Virgo, i.e. Lauren Bacall. I looked up Fellini, who was kind enough to answer a letter that I wrote to him (having read his biography which related his address). I checked his chart and the sun was in Capricorn, right on the cusp.
BTW, Karen Silkwood belongs on that list. She's on the OTHER cusp, born February 19, I believe.
I found one mistake on your list. Charles Darwin was born in 1809.
All Beck needs is more effective bipolar medications AND one of those little plastic boxes so he can remember to take his pills every day.
When watching the Hitler documents and the naive, especially the church leaders, praising Hitler and following him into disaster,-- I see the naive Americans, and church leaders doing the same concerning Palin and Beck. Insanity in full force. The once high and mighty republicans certainly lack the respect they once had to use these type of people to get themselves elected. The tea party made up with KKK members. white supremists, and backed by the same wealthy people who backed Stalin. We are heading for a combination of Socialism, Fasism, and nazism they call capitalism. The same hate and discrimination that was started by one leader in Germany, and a previous leader in American with hate within,- both considered himself a Christian.
I always wonder what has become of the Bull Connors', The George Wallaces', the people who made up the lynch mobs who murdered blacks, reds, jews and queers for sport. Sociopaths armed with blinding ignorance, a complete deficit of shame and a complicit status quo.
Where are the corollary characters for the 21st century?
Glenn Beck solves yet another mystery.
Glen Beck says that he will "...reclaim the Civil Rights movement.."
MLK started it, and he had a dream, and that dream is still viable so, Mr. Beck
if you insist on RECLAIMing history then ...finish the job.
Equal rights for all and equal treatment under the law and equal powers too.
FINISH THE JOB!
As the corporations have more rights than the DNA people...FIX THAT!
AS minorities in this country still ( on the whole) make less, spend more time in jail and die younger...FIX THAT!
As gay people should be given equal rights in marriage...FIX THAT!
As Congress still hasn't passed the ERA...FIX THAT!
47 years ago, MLK had a dream that the little children of the nation would grow up in this bountiful country and have their output be recognized and utilized.
Those little kids are all grown up now , Mr. Beck, and that life still hasn't happened yet. Actually, I think that the "dream' is more of a nightmare....FIX THAT!
Oh, and you really can't RECLAIM civil rights.... they were already guaranteed in the PREAMBLE.
You really need to read it.. so.....FIX THAT!
Actually, Congress did pass the ERA, it just didn't get through 3/4 of the state legislatures to become part of the Constitution.
Glenn Beck doesn't need a history lesson, but his audience does.
If his audience had a real history lesson, he wouldn't have an audience. He'd be out of a job
Beck is a total jack-ass.
"People want to lead others even when they are blind and devoid of wisdom." Anonymous
"because we were the people that did it in the first place"
...........and I always thought they didn't do irony in the US.
Reality is that if they hadn't such an appalling civil rights record in the first place then people like MLK wouldn't have come to the forefront.
In essence Beck is dead right. The people like him who created this situation in fact founded the civil rights movement by default.
A week from today (Sat) I would like to see on television a rejoinder to Glenn Beck by Bill Moyers.
Sometimes we look to the wrong places for historical reference. More than once I have reviewed the life and career of P.T. Barnham, and to the behavior of millions of average Americans that flocked to see his shows. It is a lesson in "the psychology of anthropoid belief". And it is one that Barry Lynn of AU needs to study again, having remarked:
"I am confident that Americans will reject the Beck-Barton message of extremism and intolerance. Our nation was built on a foundation of diversity and equality, and we must not let strident voices undercut those principles."
This way to the Egress.
Unfortunately, it is the "strident voices" that are heard, while the people who find extremism and intolerance offensive keep silent.
Persons speaking stridently are incapable of listening, and not at all amenable to persuasion to some other pov.
This, by the way, typifies many Americans overseas who are anxious about being away from their terrycloth monkey mother. They are traveling =to say they have traveled= not to see or learn anything.
True, Trylon, and in my experience, people usually change their minds either based on a personal situation -- such as a medical emergency exposing the inadequacies of our health care system or loss of a job -- or because a mountain of evidence impossible to ignore has intruded on their ideology. (The Republicans who once supported and then rejected Junior Bush, for instance, are an example of the latter.) But then there are the knothead diehards who persistently reject personal tragedy and mountains of evidence because they can't admit they've been so wrong, so they accept comforting lies from charlatans -- this is the Fox News/Glenn Beck crowd. Fortunately, they are a small minority -- no more than 20 percent -- and they are dying off. As Max Planck said in a different context:
"A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it."
The average age of the Fox News audience is 65.
Bring America Back !!!!
**Bottom line is would not MLK be gratified and happy that a black man is now our President; and that a gigantic campaign and vote by our people overcame the color barrier. At least a partial fulfillment of The Dream.
**Beck's faux pretense of honoring "our troops" really is a between the lines politic to stir nationalisms among the sheeple and sway their votes back to the Neocons.
**When the clown shows, tea partys, and shills go away, the mainstream Repubby hardline will again surface==Mitt Romney, John McCain, Jebby Bush esp, to reclaim their Dynasty.
**Make no mistake these Fox TV circus performers like Beck; O'Reilly, Hannity; Palin; Malkin; and the rest of their
Neocon jokers are just a smoke screen to distract the Democrats while their mainline characters take a break and plan the main surge for the mid-terms and next 2012.
