Tough Love for Obama
Barack Obama is one of three nominees I voted for with enthusiasm. The first, Lyndon Johnson (then in his 1964 civil-rights and anti-poverty phase), self-destructed over Vietnam. The second, George McGovern, lost 49 states. For the next three decades, Republican presidents pulled the country and the prevailing ideology far right, while Democratic interludes moved it only to the center.
But Obama portended something different altogether. Here was a rendezvous of a gifted, principled, and politically shrewd leader with a deep crisis caused by the failure of free-market ideology. It was -- and is -- the most stunning political opportunity for American progressives since Franklin Roosevelt. My reaction to Obama's election was joy, relief, gratitude.
So it is awkward to find myself in semi-opposition after barely 100 days. I'm not a chronic malcontent. I credit Obama with real leadership on multiple fronts, from redeeming the Constitution to reclaiming America's constructive role in the world. I think he is handling several tricky issues well -- accepting the need for large short-term deficits; disclosing details of Bush-era torture without personally sponsoring an inquisition; moving universal health coverage; devising a labor-law reform that can perhaps get 60 votes. All this is huge. But there still is a large risk that Obama will blow the opportunity that history has handed him, and that the political right, though currently in disarray, will pick up the pieces.
The reason, of course, is the economy. The past weeks have seen efforts to seize on every shred of good (or not as bad as expected) economic news. The commercial paper market is loosening up! Some new homeowners are getting bargains! The economy only lost 539,000 jobs in April instead of the predicted 620,000!
Even so, the most optimistic of economists predicts a long slog. We will likely avert a second Great Depression. But we still face a prolonged Great Stagnation, one that could be far worse than necessary because of the administration's circuitous, Wall Street-friendly approach to reviving the banks.
Instead of closing or breaking up failed banks, dividing the losses between taxpayers and bondholders, and getting the successor banks quickly back to health, the Treasury is propping up the incumbent zombies. Worse, it is doing so with convoluted schemes that rely on Wall Street's most speculative and unsavory players backed by loans from the Federal Reserve and guarantees against losses from the Treasury. The hope is that that the speculators will bid up the value of toxic securities on banks' books, now cheerfully rebranded as "legacy" securities. On that risky proposition, Obama is gambling his presidency.
This policy is likely to prolong the agony and leave a still-wounded banking system dragging down the real economy. As politics, it reflects an alliance with Wall Street that was bipartisan in the Clinton and Bush years and that has continued into the Obama presidency -- despite Wall Street's practical disgrace. When affronts such as the American International Group and Merrill Lynch bonuses presented opportunities to rally public opinion behind deep structural reforms, the administration's response was to damp down the popular indignation, not rev it up.
The contrast with Roosevelt's first year could not be more dramatic. FDR pledged in his Inaugural Address to "drive the moneychangers from the temple." He encouraged the populist investigations of the Senate Banking Committee under Ferdinand Pecora and used the backlash to build popular support for sweeping reform. Roosevelt engineered a deliberate political rupture with the old order, one that was politically necessary to counter the financial industry's enduring political power. FDR's key advisers did not have the Wall Street sensibilities of Messrs. Summers and Geithner.
It was, to be sure, a different era. The crisis was even more dire, and there were radical movements in the country to Roosevelt's left. Today, the people are anxious but quiescent, and Obama is, by nature, not confrontational. He hired the protégés of Robert Rubin during the campaign when he needed to demonstrate that he was reassuringly mainstream. They stuck around -- and their advice could sink the promise of his presidency.
As we were going to press, Congress, with broad bipartisan support, was on the verge of enacting a new Pecora Commission, with subpoena power and a mandate to investigate the roots of financial collapse and build the case for systemic reform. Done properly, this investigation will embarrass all three recent administrations, including Obama's. In a tacit rebuke, all 10 of the commissioners are to be appointed by Congress, none by the White House.
I still have faith that Obama may eventually get it right. But time is not on his side, and he needs some help from his friends.

Show AllWe all can pick apart our hardworking president and keep finding fault with him but all we'll get are more unhappiness and mental diseases as has some of the purist losers on the "progressive" blogs. Obama's been in office for only 4 months and he still has plenty of time to finish his term. He has a long ways to go so it's time for all the extremist talking heads on both sides to shut up and give him a chance. If you don't like what he did by November 2012, then you can vote him out and put in a Republican and then complain when you're broke. In the mean time, try find a topic more productive to write about and leave Obama alone already !
Nebraska Nathan,
I did not vote for Obama, and if he loses, I sure as hell will not vote for a Republican. The fact that Obama surrounded himself with economic advisors who, among others, are architects behind this economic calamity, and now have been directed to fix the economy, is disgraceful. These assholes belong behind bars for perpetrating fraud. Read William Black's book "The Best Way to Rob a Bank is to Own One." There has been ample time to give Obama a chance, and from the looks of things, he is no different than George Bush. He panders to and is controlled by the bankster class. In short Nathan, wake the hell up!
Hear, hear!
Ah....Obama's chance is a given my friend. He got voted in for President he is the president, our little comments make nary a difference. When he is done with his four years of chances to be a good "one" or not, he will then stay based on merits, or go based on merits. Me thinks you think he will stay based on merits?
Nebraska Nathan, when will you give the Republicans a chance?
The Republicans in Congress have only been in session for 4 months.
They have a long way to go so it's time for all the extremist talking heads on both sides to shut up and give them a chance.
Remember people said there was much to much Bush Bashing?
And then Bush destroyed the World.
"I credit Obama with real leadership on multiple fronts, from redeeming the Constitution to reclaiming America's constructive role in the world."
What the hell are you talking about?
Redeeming the constitution with preventive detention? Repealing Patriot Acts I & II, the Military Commissions Act, and restoring habeas corpus are not even mentioned by the Obama administration or any other democrat.
Reclaiming America's constructive role in the world by escalating in Afghanistan and fomenting civil war in nuclear-armed Pakistan?
"moving universal health coverage"
What the hell does that even mean? Moving universal health coverage. Yes, by forcing everyone to purchase health insurance? Problem solved I guess, eh? Great leader. Give him a chance? To do what? Finish George Bush's total destruction of the country?
I assume he means "moving universal health coverage" out to the dumpster.
Poor Kuttner is fated to see Obama as "half-full", and will continue to do so until Kuttner winds up like a desiccated gnat sticking to the bottom of the bone-dry glass. Yes he can!
· Yr Obd't Servant
Nicely stated. Universal coverage means mandated and perpetually tied to the FOR PROFIT industry of health care. Next up for Obama is privatization of the Natural World under the greedy arms of the G8 who is dividing what is left of Mother Earth for exploitation.
EKATON, my reaction exactly. Reading Mr. Kuttner's third paragraph reveals that his "love" for Obama is far stronger than his "toughness." Only a blinded love could make these claims for Obama's accomplishments which are based on no more than pretty words, unfulfilled in actions. It's just these selective critiques of Obama that give him credit while he is being criticized that, in the disposition of the public to give the popular Obama every benefit of every doubt, allows him to continue his disastrous ways, secure in the knowledge that people will forgive him his mistakes because of his (phantom) accomplishments. It's almost as bad as the German excuse for Hitler: he wasn't all bad, because he built the Autobahn.
-I credit Obama with real leadership on multiple fronts, from redeeming the Constitution to reclaiming America's constructive role in the world
You beat me to it, EKATON.
Is this guy on drugs? "redeaming the constitution" with preventive detention? "constructive role in the world" with expanding the bombing of Pakistan?
and the Kuttner is saying it is not Obama's fault, it is the fault of the economy! Because (as we all know) peace and civil rights and the rule of law are only for when the economy is booming, right? Watching Obama's government is like watching the world's largest multi-car freeway pile-up in slow motion.
Yah, I was thinking along these same lines.....especially with the escalation in N. Korea. N. Korea doesn't see Obama as the savior of the world nor do they feel a bit safer with Obama because they especially can see what Robert cannot. Obama was supposed to stop this slow motion crash in which no one knew how to hit the emergency brakes, instead he got in the drivers seat and now thinks he can get us through the pile up unscathed with his superior to George Bush driving skills in a major accident. Ho hum.......
Dittos.
Give him a break, though. It really takes a while for the Kool-Aid to wear off.
It only wears off if you stop drinking it.
There is sooooooo much in this article that is total BS I don't even know where to begin.
But perhaps what is most disgusting, aside from Robert Kuttner insane delusions about Obama's policies, is that what finally got to him is the economy. Not war, false imprisonment, or torture. It's just what I would expect from a longtime columnist for Business Week.

EKATON: He's dazzled by the orator in his capacity to stir minds to great ideals, and he doesn't appear to notice that policies have altered by mainly an iota. Scary when intelligent minds are so easily swayed.
Exactly. The minute I read that, he lost me.

And I thought that the neoconservatives Republican sacum) had a monopoly on fantastic thinking and bending reality into thier own private fantasy. Boy, was I wrong.
I consider a good healthy well presented dose of optimism an encouraging sign but I will not forget promises made and broken with what seems too evident a continuation of the ruinous course the previous administrations(decades worth) set in motion and I am not oblivious that 4 months does not a president make, and to turn that around, 'actions speak louder than words'.
Danger is, though, the longer that what are clearly illegal activities are allowed to continue the more acceptably entrenched they become as a way of 'doing business' (control fraud) and as long as major events that have contributed to the disasterous ongoing crises are NOT investigated and the truth brought to light, the less anything will change and history will indeed repeat itself.
And because the human species are the most incredibly inept and irresponsible 'steward' of this planet, don't anyone expect a change for the good anytime, on a relative, geologic or astronomic scale, to happen soon.
When a human being stacks their chips of life on one bet, you can bet they will loose and they are wrong and they are nothing more but a wealthy gambler who is part of the system.
When one bets narrowly with life it's self, it is unlikely one will wake up and win in the only way a human can win, regardless of the outcome, through having wisdom at the core of one's knowledge base.
There is no wisdom in choosing sides and never will be in a society built on the precepts of a free and equal humanity.
I don't look forward to how Robert will continue to twist reality so he can be a winner that got it right and can still have hope in status quo.
There was only one candidate who was on the side of the people and let me give a little hint, that person did not win the two sided election that had both sides on the side of the corporations.
One must conclude that Obama supporters, among their many failings, are ludicrously poor judges of character.
F**k character. Gimme the policies! Gimme the decisions!! Gimme the actions!!!

I voted for Obysmal thinking and feeling precisely the same way. CD readers who knew he would turn out to be what he is now picked apart his voting record and posted it here numerous times. I read those comments. But eight years of George Wanker Bush and Cheesedick Cheney had turned this nation not into a place that drank Jonestown Kool-Aid but Dr. Jekyll's potion that turned him into Mr. Hyde. Bush/Cheney wanted to overthrow constitutional rule in this nation. A coup with enough military and MSM power behind it to make it stick was not possible. The alternative was what they in fact did. Get the courts behind you most of the time and repeatedly yell "BOO" at the gutless, spineless congress to keep them in line. Eventually, power would, by political osmosis, seep completely into the executive branch and we would have a coup not by guns but by laziness, stupidity and opportunism. McCain would have continued that process. And now Obysmal is doing the same. Okay, all those of you out there who said I told you so were right and I hang my head and bow down. Obysmal's election is a true political watershed, though not for the reasons commonly supposed. It marks the point where any hope, any belief, no matter how microscopically small, that the present two-party system can accomplish anything positive for ordinary citizens finally came to an end. As long as the Republicans and the Democrats control our political and economic destinies, all that's left is the joyride downhill . . . and then over the cliff.
It will probably look more like a national hurricane Katrina. The effect of a bad government is that our defenses are weakened. When a strong enough storm comes along and those weakened defenses fail as they are sure to......it will be a national hurricane Katrina. We should all just be very prepared for that inevitability, it's common sense, barring a hope to change the corrupt Government we can prepare for the consequence.
Mordechai Shiblikov, you are THE MAN, the rare and precious one with enough strength of character to say "I was wrong" about Obama. Your example will be replicated by many others in the troubled days ahead. It remains to seen whether those of us who never thought Obama was the salvation of our dreams will have the humanity to welcome back to the fold of true progressivism all those who were duped by what turned out to be a spectacular exercise in the marketing of a fraudulent brand. And it remains as well to be seen whether the American people as a people will find enough of that strength and that forgiveness to bring us back from the precipice at which we have arrived.
This news commentary is coupled with today's news story of the President's heartening nomination of Sonia Sotomayor, an "inspiring woman," to the Supreme Court.
In this mix and the other mixed-bag assortment of decisions of this president I still am affirmed that I made the correct choice in serving as a precinct captain for Obama and in the work that we did for him leading up to our victory in the general election.
Time will tell.

"Obysmal"--that's rich! I love the Shiblikovisms. Here's some other suggested monikers for the sainted one: Obamitall, Obola, Oblamit, O-Kablamma (where the drones come rushing down the range), Okosher, Opigma, Ospamma, Obanka, Ofamine, Olame-ugh, Opfoto, Oquitta, Orisable, Osupine, Oservile, Oslickedhimself, Osunshinesouthisass, Otoken...the possibilities proliferate with his lies and betrayals.
Shib,
Great post (and great moniker, too, btw). I (perhaps being older and less wholly American than you) was very suspicious of Obama, but I held my nose, hoped to God (as my atheist father used to say), and voted for him when he was the nominee.
Many people posting here voted for 3rd party candidates. One can usually recognize them because of the way they post for the purpose of spitting on the rest of us without offering any other content. This is probably the reason their candidates always lose: their supporters spend all their time attacking the rest of us with contentless vitriol and leave no time to work for their candidates in such a way as to draw in those of us (voters!) not already card-carrying third-partyites. They seem to prefer spitting at those who voted for the surviving Democrat to building a progressive coalition. Reminds me of many European revolutionary groups in the 19th/20th centuries; if I mentioned some names they'd be unknown to almost all Americans and certainly to our 3rd party friends, so I won't bother.
The truth is that this country has an electoral system in which minor candidates can't get close to winning, so it really would make sense for those who favor progressive candidates to try to gain the support of other progressives in the Democratic party (still the likeliest place to find progressives in the USA). And another suggestion for those young enough is to get into the Democratic Party, go to local (district/ward-level) meetings, run for positions (treasurer, secretary, etc., at first) and change the party from within. Believe me, local parties grasp at anyone: I know. And before you've been there 6 months they'll want you to run for the city. I know that, too.

Hey Mordi.
You are a man of confidence and strength.
Admitting you fell hard for the Earl Shives of politics can't be easy.
Realizing it so quickly proves how finely tuned your radar is to bullshit.
For this, I salute you.
Cicero: "Freedom is participation in power."
Regardless of whether you like or dislike Prezdint Oboreo, the big banks, the military industrial complex, the Israelis, the major polluters, Big Pharma, Big Health Insurance, anti-labor forces, etc., right on down the line have all taken his measure and found him a servile weakling.
They and Big Media will now use him while they slowly and methodically rip him to shreds--and in his case, as in Bill Clinton's, deservedly so. Obama had the fattest, easiest opportunity handed to any Democratic president since FDR and he and his fellow craven corporatist Dimocrat flunkies blew it in less than 100 days of him taking office. Weak and stupid. They didn't even bargain their dishonor but sold out cheap on first offers like rancid street pimps and syphilitic whores.
Did any of you hear Obama's response to the question of what type of Supreme Court Justice he would like wherein he praised at length the excellent writing, uniquely thoughtful opinions and communicating skills of Antonin Scalia?? I've never seen a more unctuous kowtowing to Republicanism for the sake of perceived expedient (but in fact pointless) genuflection in my life. It was as if he decided to expose two bleeding fang holes in his neck and whine, "Please don't bite & suck as hard as last time all ye Republicans but do come back, by all means!"
Why do you think a few days after his meeting with the Israeli PM, that Netanyahu is publicly and loudly proclaiming that (illegal) settlements will continue? THEY KNOW OBAMA IS A FASCIST FACILITING MILQUE TOAST. His signal of caving into them was sent when Obama's Atty. Gen. Holder buried the Israeli spy/Jane Harmon case & scandal before Obama had even met with Netanyahu.
Obama can't even count on sniveling, marginal DLC rural rabble in Congress to shore up his cold pre-fab faux populism on any obvious liberal issue of our time--from usurious credit card interest rates to a labor check card voting bill to a meaningful climate change bill (this late in the climate change game--perhaps too late). Obama didn't fight in Congress for ANY of them. His modus operandi is to make public statements in support of progressively FRAMED legislation for public [voter] consumption, then let the corporatist Republicans and Dimocrats in Congress do with these bills what they will--because he never honestly supported them in the first place. He is a two-faced liar worse than Bill Clinton and more facile than Bush II because he is better informed and so has less excuse.
Any of you Obama glam-worshipers who still believe that he has somehow "redeemed the Constitution" should read his policy statements and his Atty. General's lawyers' related court assertions more carefully. Obama has not repudiated Bush II's Unitary Theory of Executive Power--far from it. Obama EXPANDED upon the Bush II misconception of the States Secrets privilege--was immediately rebuked for it in the federal courts--and asserted it again. He has decided that he himself will not choose to use certain "questionable" methods espoused by Bush & Cheney, but that he will certainly use or modify others for continued use, and it will remain the purview of future presidents to choose which methods they will use or abuse as they see fit as far as Oboreo is concerned. He and Rahm lack any notion of understanding with respect to either immediate or long-term consequences. Two classic Chicago pols on the make. Chris Matthews will nod and flatulate with utter lack of surprise when Rahm becomes a defense industry lobbyist for Israeli coercion & surveillance technologies (like those already tested on the Palestinian civilians) and Obama another board member of Walmart (like Hillary) after he leaves office.
Cicero: "Freedom is participation in power."
Obama has consistently covered up or pushed hard for the cover up of extensive and highly detailed evidence of a broad-spectrum, official U.S. torture policy both here and in British courts. One that included kidnapping of foreign nationals (including those of allied nations) and their transport to illegal U.S. torture facilities all over the world. Illegal transport of these "detainees" to known torture States as well.
He has ignored for months now all demands for independent investigations into torture--he and Rahm ["lofty" in Hebrew--] Emanuel snottily scoffing at progressives all the while--let alone the illegal invasion of Iraq which is the biggest war crime of the last decade. Obama and his fellow DLC traitors are still trying as hard as they can to sweep the vast array of Team Bush crimes under the "bipartisan" carpet. Everyone has almost forgotten ongoing full-spectrum warrantless surveillance and the Bill of Rights. Why do you think Nancy Pelosi suddenly embarked on an extended foreign junkette immediately after fumbling her statements about when she knew what about waterboarding?
Likewise regarding the economy, the DLC Dims have not restored the Glass-Steagall Act nor required an independent investigation of the fraudulent banks, insurance firms, credit ratings agencies, accounting firms, etc. They have coddled them, re-capitalized them at taxpayer expense and with more foreign borrowing plus interest, and are deludedly relying on them to find and inflate another fraudulent economic bubble (ANY such bubble, they are so desperate) to claim that they are "restoring the economy"--in lieu of re-building a middle-class industrial jobs base. Oh, anything but THAT!! THAT might lower the globalized, free-trade inflated profit margins and stock portfolios of the U.S. owners of the means of (now foreign located) "U.S." production. Case in point:
"Bankrupt" GM to Escalate Importation of China-built GM Cars into the U.S. -- Associated Press
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hn9VHtGiDjTa3mjiR5pWleoMMXmAD985EGNG1
I defy anyone, Obama-lover, Republican, "free trade" anti-protectionist, whomever: Explain to me how (A) GM warrants another bailout plus bankruptcy protection in the U.S. when it is expected to enjoy 5 to 10% growth in China alone this year and will be exporting upwards of 50,000 China-built GM cars into the U.S. by 2014, and (B) How does bankrolling GM to offshore U.S. middle-class auto manufacturing jobs to China help the U.S. economy in ANY way?
GM is simultaneously pleading poverty and closing hundreds of dealerships and laying off thousands of auto workers in the U.S.--creating negative ripple effects throughout America--especially in smaller towns and cities--and expanding export capacity and business partnerships with SAIC in China. This is the same cycle of Walmart-ized economic import attrition trading tens of millions of middle-class American jobs over the last 20 years for low priced shoddy import goods that has swiftly converted the U.S. from the world's largest CREDITOR nation to the world's largest DEBTOR. Obama and Geithner and Bernanke and the bankers are pushing this regime just as Bush and Paulsen and Greenspan did before them and Clinton and Rubin and Greenspan before that.
I have written that Mr. Obama et al is destroying the USA. This is being done purposefully.
The American sheeple elected him, it is their will. They will pay as well as everyone else.
"Republican presidents pulled the country and the prevailing ideology far right."
Sorry Robert, I like your stuff a lot mostly but McGovern lost in 49 States because White America wanted, "those filthy fucking niggers, those filthy fucking cunts, and those god damned long haired commie fucking anti-war protesters in their fucking place." I was there. I heard that coming from their mouths from NY to Lost Angels and all points in between. The good white folk were 87% of America then and after they got rid of that 39 year old Black Preacher who called them the greatest purveyors of violence on the planet - they wanted the rest of them "gone" too. And they are.
That was White America talking Robert and you just didn't want to hear them. They were too ugly, too troglodyte to be "our America". But they were and they are. They are the same White America that stole this country through genocide. They are the same White America that grows wood over Black lynchings, human torture, and degradation. When observed in this way you are looking at the black heart of a country founded to mirror the Roman Slave Republic before the Gracchi Brothers by kiddie raping slave holding richfilth animals we call "Founding Fathers" - and White America still wants to own slaves and be obscenely wealthy and fuck children and torture humans just like they did. It's the (White Male) American way, aka Feral Bestiality.
This is the time of Fulfillment, the time of the Great Shattering when the evil core of this monstrous genocidal society is revealed to the entire species. Hail TORTURERS! Hail CHILD RAPERS! Hail America the greatest lying monstrosity that ever destroyed a global civilization.
In the end "our America" will revert to cannibalism as a simple expedient...we're very big on simple expedients - like killing messengers...
Cicero: "Freedom is participation in power."
You had me until you got to the part about the U.S. being "founded to mirror the Roman Slave Republic...by kiddie raping slave holding...'Founding Fathers' - and White America still wants to own slaves and be obscenely wealthy and fuck children and torture humans just like they did. It's the (White Male) American way, aka Feral Bestiality."
"Lucky Lefty" scans like a Righty-Planty or a gooey regressive far-Left imbecile.
The USA was not founded to mirror the Roman Slave Republic which did not recognize new immigrants as voting land holders, nor grant the unprecedented extent of rights even to white male Roman citizens granted by the U.S. Bill of Rights to white male American citizens. The overwhelmingly predominant forms of government at the time of the creation of the USA were autocracies and theocracies--far worse in nearly every aspect to the fledgling republic with its separation of powers and enumerated rights. The Founding Fathers did not support permanent standing armies for the purposes of global imperial conquest. Not all of the early American colonies were slave-based colonies. Some had economies extensively devoted to fishing, whaling, naval stores and the shipping trade as well as hard scrabble farming without slave labor. Not all the Founding Fathers owned slaves and many were anti-slavery. Most Americans of all races did then and do now foolishly believe in a right to become rich to the degree that over-concentration of wealth is considered an unquestioned fact of life. Neither child abuse and rape nor owning slaves nor torturing people nor bestiality are now or ever have been the exclusive or even predominant purview of caucasians in the U.S.A. and extensive evidence of this extends back throughout written history.
lucky ----- I guess you find room for improvement.
...soooo do our victims,glenn...but with a lot of luck and a massive ordeal of repentance they might, just might become human beings again - BUT that will mean rejecting white male supremacy, gender slavery, human slavery, constant war and the rights of conquest as the only force that gives their PUTRID lives meaning AND they have to kill off their Oligarchy as a social class(either taxation or guillotine) AND they have to stop wanting to BE feral Oligarchy - and that I fear is all together a bridge too far. They have to make a society based on INclusion and they WON'T - they have to make an equal place for everyone at the table and they REFUSE to this hour and this moment and will murder anyone who calls them on it...and you know this...just like you know they've done all this to themselves...
White America built its own funeral pyre. It should be quite dramatic when they climb the ladder and jump into the flames. And yes, to answer your question, this IS a suicide run for them...Exclusion always produces this result, we're just doing it on a global scale...
Peace...
