Earthjustice Statement on House Passage of Inflation Reduction Act

"These investments will incentivize the expansion of our clean energy economy and lay a strong foundation for ultimately making fossil fuels obsolete."
WASHINGTON -

Today, the House of Representatives passed the Inflation Reduction Act. The bill now moves to President Joe Biden’s desk for signature to become law. After the vote, Earthjustice President Abigail Dillen issued the following statement:

“We applaud Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats for sending the Inflation Reduction Act to the President’s desk. After decades of efforts to secure legislation to address climate change, this bill makes historic investments in climate solutions and community resilience that begin to respond to the scale and urgency of our climate emergency. These investments will incentivize the expansion of our clean energy economy and lay a strong foundation for ultimately making fossil fuels obsolete.

“While this package has the potential to achieve imperative emissions reductions by 2030, it also includes extremely harmful giveaways to the fossil fuel industry that could lock in deadly pollution in communities, especially in the Gulf of Mexico, Appalachia, and Alaska. We are doubling down on our fight to stop new fossil development, force a faster transition to clean energy, defend and strengthen environmental protections, and reform our unjust system of pollution control.

“We urge President Biden to quickly sign this bill and immediately get to work on implementing the climate solutions it funds, while executing on the all-of-government approach that is needed to achieve 50 percent greenhouse gas emissions reductions by 2030. Our future can’t wait.”
