Like Oil Companies, 3M Must Be Held Accountable for Its PFAS Cover Up

Statement by Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch

WASHINGTON

According to Attorney General Dana Nessel, Michigan is pursuing legal action to address contamination from per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), joining Minnesota, Ohio, New York, New Jersey and New Mexico, which have also filed lawsuits related to PFAS contamination. Yesterday, the Detroit Free Press reported that a former environmental specialist for 3M had resigned citing the company's "unethical" response to PFAS risks more than 20 years ago, as company research was showing the extent to which the family of chemicals was dangerous to public health.

In response, Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter released the following statement:

"Every day, more troubling information comes out about PFAS contamination and what corporations profiting from them knew. We hope Attorney General Nessel follows through on legal action to hold manufacturers accountable for unleashing these 'forever chemicals' on our environment. It's unconscionable that 3M ignored its own research on the toxic effects of PFAS, instead prioritizing profits over what's right. Like Exxon and other oil companies' climate cover up, 3M's actions have put generations at risk, and they must be held accountable."

Food & Water Watch mobilizes regular people to build political power to move bold and uncompromised solutions to the most pressing food, water, and climate problems of our time. We work to protect people's health, communities, and democracy from the growing destructive power of the most powerful economic interests.
