The New Know-Nothings
It was Jesus Christ, if Matthew is to be believed, who said, "Love thine enemy." It is in that spirit that I write this belated valentine to Sarah Palin.
Sarah, I love you for having revealed unto the media the snarling heart of the beast that is the base (and the soul) of the Republican Party. Yes, you have the lipstick and the heels, not to mention the calves and bosoms, that send Republican men into swoons, but you have more; the pit-bull snarl that rouses your supporters to cry out, "Traitor!" against Obama, and "Kill him!"
George Bush kept those folks in their kennels, ran as a "compassionate conservative," and always masked his most heinous plans in double speak. Bush the Elder, Ronald Reagan, and even Richard Nixon never explicitly ran on hate and fear of "the other." They used words that were coded enough that it was possible to pretend that they were true.
But now the beast is loose.
The Republican Party likes to remember Abraham Lincoln. And so they should. It's a nice memory and brings credit to them. As does the accidental ascension of Teddy Roosevelt, environmentalist and basher of corporations. Back in the 1950s and '60s, their party included such figures as Dwight Eisenhower -- whose reputation grows ever better in retrospect -- Nelson Rockefeller, who built New York's state university system, and New York City mayor John Lindsey.
But there is another strand that runs through their history.
Back in the 1840s, there was a group called the Know Nothings. They were against immigrants and for real Americans. ("Real American" did not then, as it does not now, refer to Indians; it refers to descendants of English immigrants.) The movement was based on fear. Irish and German Catholics were going to take over. They would take orders from the Pope-in-Rome (one word). Their values were not "our values." They drank. Their nunneries were virtual brothels and when the nuns had babies they practiced infanticide.
The Know Nothings started with secret societies like the Order of the Star Spangled Banner, associated with William Poole, better known as Bill the Butcher, depicted by Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York. Their public political face was the American Republican Party, which became the Native American Party, and finally the American Party.
Their platform was:
Severe limits on immigration, especially from Catholic countries.
Restricting political office to "native-born" Americans.
Mandating a wait of 21 years before an immigrant could gain citizenship.
Restricting public school teaching to Protestants.
Mandating daily Bible readings in public schools (from the Protestant version of the Bible).
Restricting the sale of liquor.
For a brief time, the American Party was wildly popular. In 1854 party membership swelled from 50,000 to over a million in a matter of months. It elected mayors in Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, DC, San Francisco, and Chicago, and won the state legislature and governorship of Massachusetts.
But there were other things going on: the Mexican War, slavery, secession, and the Civil War. The movement didn't last long and was soon absorbed by the Republican Party.
Fair is fair. Things morph and change. The Republican Party freed the slaves and tried to create an interracial democratic South during Reconstruction. The Democratic Party became the party of segregation in the South and the second home of the Klu Klux Klan. To be Republican is not to be necessarily narrow-minded and in dread fear of foreigners. To be Democratic is not necessarily to be liberal, progressive and open-minded.
But enough of being fair.
The Great Depression demonstrated that the principles of the Republican Party were bankrupt. Like most of the country. The Democrats became the progressive party, representing social justice and programs that would protect capitalism from its own worst tendencies, moving toward a vision of a perfectable world. The Republicans became -- in a very literal sense -- a reactionary party, reacting against whatever the Democrats were doing, engaged in a 60-year-long war against the New Deal.
Lyndon Johnson is the pivotal figure, both heroic and deeply tragic. The Democratic Party's dirty public secret was that its political hegemony rested on the Solid South, still refusing to vote Republican out of hatred of Lincoln. Johnson knew that if he pushed through the Civil Rights Act his party would lose the South for a generation. Or more. His heroism is that he did anyway. No, he did not end the race issue, but he broke the back of segregation.
The Republicans saw their opportunity. They pursued the Southern Strategy, wooing resentful whites with great success.
But two things happened.
Racism became less and less tenable. The generation that cherished it has grown old. That pillar of the Republican Party is crumbling.
And then along came Bush-Cheney. Like Herbert Hoover, in the process of leading the country to bankruptcy they demonstrated that the Republican Party's ideas were also bankrupt. They made government bigger, not smaller -- and more intrusive, too. They didn't oppose special interests, they were the special interests. They didn't oppose lobbyists, they forced lobbyists to join their party at fiscal gunpoint. They were militaristic on parade, but could not run a war. They could not protect the country nor punish the people who actually attacked us. Their policies demonstrated that free markets are a fiction, and real markets need more supervision than a grade-school playground.
Along came John McCain. He looked out, from sea to shining sea, from the mountains, to the prairies, in search of voters who would vote for him. All he could find were the new Know Nothings. People who, frightened of the way things are changing, want to change back to that white, Protestant place it was, oh, sometime back before 1840. America Firsters. Anti-immigrant. Anti-foreigner. Anti-elite. Anti-intelligence.
Not quite capable of running as a true Know Nothing himself, he chose someone who could: Sarah Palin. She does it well, and in so doing, shows us, clearly and simply, who they really are.

Show AllHow about restricting public office to only Native Americans, after all, we stole this country from them and they are the only " true" Americans! McCain and Palin: the next movie of dumb and dumber?
"As does the accidental ascension of Teddy Roosevelt, environmentalist and basher of corporations."
**too bad he spoiled his eco credentials by once throwing a live animal into a piranha infested river to see what would happen.
In addition to his fondness for mass slaughter of african fauna to be used in taxidermy.
A poor definition of environmentalist. The only true environmentalists are ones who give up hunting, like Leo Tolstoy.
"George Bush kept those folks in their kennels, ran as a "compassionate conservative," and always masked his most heinous plans in double speak."
Ha! Yes, that is a good one... almost as good as Obama Democrats who insist on associating him with progressivism. The results of double-speak never fail to astound... especially in regard to the high degree of simplicity and effectiveness.
Beat Me! Lie to Me! Make Me Sign Bad Checks! (Vote) I just love to hear you double-speak!!
"They could not protect the country nor punish the people who actually attacked us."
Yes, because they were the people who actually attacked us, and in truth we needed (and still need) to be protected FROM them, not BY them.
Say it again.
A very informative article. I had heard of the Know Nothings, because it's such a catchy name, but didn't really know what it was.
Yeah, Palin brings it out in 'em.
Another rambling, hysterical, incoherent rant by some frightened little nerd who could just as easily have written, "Ooooh, bad Sarah!"
Another rambling from a dimwitted know nothing like yourself. Piss off!
Lets send those Catholic sub-humans O'Reilly and Hannity back to Ireland where they belong!
Actually, they were both born in Crawford, Texas . . . in the only house located on the other side of the tracks. You could always hear a tinny piano playing in the parlor and raucous male and female laughter coming from the top floor. Their mother owned the house but they have different fathers, one a Fuller Brush Man and the other a short order cook. Considering where they came from, some might call them American Success Stories but they are, and always will be, the last scoop of mashed potatoes in the barrel just as they were the day they were born.
LOL!
What do you have against Ireland?
Joe
I thought this was going to be an article about Obama supporters!! (;
It is an article about the Obama supporters!! They know nothing. They don't need to know anything, they have FAITH and HOPE! Faith forbids critical thinking--or any kind of thinking. Why bother when you have FAITH and that is enough to explain every thing. Followed up by HOPE, which means you don't have to do anything, you just sit and HOPE things will get better.
If you have any desire to be anything but a know nothing, check out the Nader web site at www.votenader.org The change we need in this nation is to get out from under the domination of the corporations. Obama and McCain are just corporate puppets. The money pulls their strings. Just look at the bail out of the big boys on Wall Street. Dems and Repubs are not concerned about the working people. The Dems were pretty good four decades ago, but what have they done for the working people in these last forty years? Clinton gave us NAFTA and job loss, the end of welfare as we know it (Roosevelt's New Deal) and banking deregulation. Since then the Dems have been no party of opposition. When Bush cheated in 2000 and 2004 and the methods have been exposed the Dems did NOTHING to prevent the cheating to continue. The results of the election have already been made. Could be either one. One is better looking and younger than the other, but their platforms are the same. Assist the rich in getting richer.
You peg it to the wall. Great read.
And peg this to your head. PAY ATTENTION TO LOCAL RACES FOR A CHANGE !
I voted for a Green 3 days ago.
Rebecka Kennedy candidate for US. Senate from Arkansas.
I voted AGAINST sen pryor.
Then why don't you fight for better candidates starting at the local level? With abysmal turnouts as low as 10%, it's no wonder we're all stuck with the crap these two parties are made of on the federal level.
If your "stuck with the crap these two parties are made of on the federal level."
Why don't you vote Nader/Gonzalez? LOL...
You'll be glad you did...
Add Bruce Springsteen to the list of those benighted people, blinded by empty hope.
I have never regretted my vote for Nader 8 years ago; I've always argued against those who attribute Gore's failure to Nader's effort.
But Nader, who had his strongest impact on our lives during the Johnson administration & in the decade after, has simply bought into the imperial presidency, since he only runs for president; whereas his primary emphasis should have been on building legislative power.
He has never had a single thought as to how he would govern as president should he have gotten the office, since he has written off all but a few legislators in advance.
Like Randians, Naderites are solipsists to whom all the rest of humanity are ignoramuses and idiots.
My post was went to be sarcastic! I'm NOT an Obama supporter! I was thinking more along the lines of how whenever I see an Obama supporter and ask them about their candidate they know NOTHING about his voting record!! And become very uncomfortable when they learn his positions are the opposite of theirs!
Pat Gray:Supreme Court nominations. One good reason to vote for Obama.
.
I’ll say it again…
We needed Ralph Nader as President in 2000.
We needed Ralph Nader as President in 2004.
We NEED Ralph Nader as President in 2008.
Never before as we do now
http://www.votenader.org/index.html
.
Too bad the voters aren't giving Ralph their votes. He's history. Besides, he could have easily beaten Chris Shays in CT even as an Independent. Better yet, he could have run against Joe LIEberNAZI in 2006 but he didn't. What's wrong with trying out those offices first?
You don't know how the voters will vote. get a clue...
Maybe not exactly but one thing's for certain. Ralph Nader won't win. Besides, he could have tried running for a House or Senate seat in his own home state of CT even as the opportunity was ripe. I see you didn't even answer my question as to why Nader didn't even bother vying for those seats first but I see you'd much rather be a self-deluded whiner expecting Nader to be your fairy-god mother but that's not how the system works. Go help your locals in Arkansas for a change. There are at least 3 candidates in your local races running as Independents sharing Nader's views.
She has said she voted for one of them.
Do you apologize now?
Nader runs for President because he is attempting to get his issues onto the national spotlight -many of them directly connected with the powers of the President, and how national politics operates.
His goal is not building a party this year -the Greens killed that one from his POV in 2004. He is not trying to "work his way up" the power ladder, he is trying to demonstrate that it needs to be reformed.
What exactly is the problem with any of this anyway?
Why is it your right to tell people what they should go do "for a change"?
Your man Obama is going to win.
Nader or the Greens aren't going to change that.
Only shennanigans by the GOP and a repeat of the Dem impotency from '00 and '04 in the face of these can change it.
In any case, the Dems will extend their majorities in Congress -and therefore have an even stronger hold on the Constitutionally most powerful Branch of Government.
So, given the above, maybe your time would be better spent in some other way than berating Nader voters online?
Maybe, but what do I know?
I also very proudly voted for...
(drumroll...)
44th PRESIDENT RALPH NADER ....YEAH....
Nannie:vote as you please, but you can't get him as President now, either. I was a Kucinich Dem.,voted for him in primary and now have voted for Obama.
I have some Bush supporter friends who still go to great trouble to rationalize their support. What they haven't blamed on Clinton, they are already blaming on Obama! For example: ACORN and Obama's involvement caused the credit crisis! Limbaugh and Hannity feed them these little fibs and half-truths they grab for all they're worth.
People don't want to admit all the posturing during the Clinton years and all the support for Bush and browbeating everyone else was a colossal mistake. I feel sorry for them, but I hope Obama wins.
BTW Obama really should have given Plumber Joe a straight answer that day. Yes. If he buys the business and earns $250K he will pay more taxes. What is wrong with paying your way and reaching down a little to help those less fortunate? PJ isn't just a Know Nothing. He's an a--hole.
First of all, Joe the plumber needs to get a license and pay his back taxes or he's not going to have to worry about a business. That's what I find ironic about the whole situation. I think Joe has the cart ahead of the horse worrying about his $250k a year income at this point.
By the way, The Des Moines Register released new poll results today. In Iowa, the numbers are now 54% for Obama and 37% for McCain. Now I realize our small number of electoral votes in Iowa aren't a huge prize. But considering that we're 98% white in this state, and we don't care what color/shape/size/religion Obama is, I think this is really great news.
Bottom line - flush Joe the plumber and vote for Barack!
>>>The Democratic Party became the party of segregation in the South and the second home of the Klu Klux Klan.
typo fix: Ku Klux Klan
"The Know Nothings" were the name of a group in American History. "The Expansionists" was the name of the group that was involved in the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine and starting the Spanish American War. They had been preparing for the War a year before the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine.....
As I read some of the angry comments, I realized that no one got the message. History repeats itself when the people are not informed. As a retired teacher, I watched the elimination of World History and Civics from our curriculum over several years.
What happens when a "Power Elite" controls a society? There is the total distortion and elimination of history and information.
Cindy Sheehan, a true patriot, is running against Nancy Pelosi, a member of the "Power Elite". Cindy has been marginalized by the media as was Dennis Kucinich. Even though the people of San Francisco do not approve of Nancy Pelosi, Nancy will win. After all Sequoia, ES&S, and Diebold were able to drop almost 8 million electronic presidential votes from the 2004 Election. (Election Data Services Analysis of the 2004 Election) So, why not for a fellow member of the "Political Elite"?
"The Know Nothings" still know nothing. And the rest of us, know less!
Herbert,
You are absolutely right that many 20 and 30-somethings were either not taught or didn't put forth the effort to learn History and Civics. I recently worked with a professional who honest-to-God didn't not know what WWII was about or when it took place.
I disagree with you about Sheehan. I haven't heard much substance. I see her dramatic stunts, but she's going to have to do more. As we are learning from McCain/Palin, a negative campaign is not the best way to win no matter how outrageous your accusations. Sheehan's energy level is phenomenal, but she needs a consistent and credible message. Convincing a few thousand people to play dead on the lawn of the capital just doesn't do much for me. We already understood the point she was making there. What we need from Sheehan are some well thought out plans. Beating up Pelosi isn't enough, and it shows.
Sheehan has given a lot for this country. She went from a grieving parent to fighter for the rights of vets in re medical care, education, etc. A couple of days ago, the windows of her campaign office were blown out. Her Camp Casey did a lot for the antiwar movement. She was physically quite ill (after surgery) and came back to run for office. I applaud her even though I don't agree with everything she says. She is a heroic figure. I think she would be good as a Representative. Pelosi went against her district in re impeachment. And a lot of the US.
And the Constitution.
Does Politics now trump Law even in the eyes of "progressives"?
I'd say that is a measure of how truly lost the Republic is, and how counter-productive legitimization of the current false front to Empire really is.
Nice try, but the Maine was blown up due to an accidental explosion from inside the ship. It occurred when a boiler overheated and caused the powder stores on the other side of a steel wall to get hot enough to set off the powder. This has been proven with scientific forensics that have shown that this is how it happened. It wasn't the Spanish, it wasn't a torpedo, it wasn't sabotage. It was stupidity in design and sloppiness in knowing what was going on it the ship. To blame it on any party that wasn't anywhere near it is just plain foolishness.
Learn some history, and watch something other than Dancing with the stars and you might know what you are talking about.
WJM:I like your reply until the last line. Teaching might work better without the insults, yes?
I agree with both of your points.
Joe
Another apt description: the Sturmabteilung wing of the Republican Party. Always be on your guard with this bunch if you're a progressive.
Google "REPUBLICAN RULE IS DANGEROUS" by John Dean. It's an excellent one-page article based on thirty years of "empirical evidence" as to what makes these Righties "tick". Which, in turn, explains why, after eight years of The Republican Disaster these unreasonable people are still wishing for "more of the same" DESPITE the normal, average person's "better judgement."
This article is certainly a "MUST READ!"
nader is running to recapture the fame and glory of his youth...sad,really
Using that logic, I suppose Obama is then running to insure the flow of corporate cash to pad his old age and a beach front home on Maui.
LeeAnnG
This morning on NPR, there was a report on voters in small towns. One man - a lifelong Republican - who was interviewed said he'd considered Obama and then decided that he was afraid Obama would spend too much money! Obviously he didn't keep track of the huge expansion of government and government spending under BushCo.
I've personally heard Republicans say Obama is a Communist - and certainly NOT a patriot, he's a Muslim, and that his race would make it impossible to get anything done if he were elected. Of course, I also heard some of the same people get all excited about the idea of using the $700 billion bailout money to give $450 thousand to every American citizen over the age of 18. Doing the math, I found that if there are 200 million adult citizens, it comes to $3,500 (yup! three thousand, five hundred), not $450 thousand for each person. But it's only off by a factor of about 100. And one Alternet reader (I don't know if this person was a Republican or not) tried to "explain" to me how this works by adding information about how some of the money would go back to the government in taxes and said I should redo the math. (I did. It was still only $3,500.)
But I digress. The point is that many working class Republicans are definitely in the "know-nothing" category. Witness the mindless, hatefilled ugliness at the Palin rallies and the spiteful nastiness of Joe-the-Plumber when he's on stage with Palin or McCain. Know-nothing mentality and bigotry are a very bad combination.
All true, yet many Obama supporters seriously think he's progressive! Both parties increase delusions in their supporters!!
pp:I voted for Obama. No illusions.
So what? I voted for McKinney without any illusions. Moral of the story? We are both going to get more of the same.
LeeAnnG:You can do the math. Good for you. On a serious note: to me, NPR is an image of the United States that fits with "apple pie, mom and mashed potatoes" (I like the e in it,yes, the best thing Dan Quayle did was put that e in potatoe.) They are like soft core news. What's your opinion of NPR? What part of the country are you in? I don't know a lot of Republicans. Of the two I do know:one just voted early for Obama because of the "rumors about Obama made me angry" and the other is forbidden to discuss politics with me. As rigid as described in the John Dean article on CD.
I appreciate the history of the Know Nothings, but while McCain and Palin are certainly anti-intelligence, the author's claim that they are "anti-immigrant, anti-foreigner and anti-elite" is unsupported by the facts. McCain, after all, was a prime mover behind last year's failed "comprehensive immigration reform" bill that would have legalized 36-60 million illegal "immigrants" (if McCain becomes president it's virtually certain such legislation will be passed), and Palin is married to an Alaska native.
It's more accurate to view McCain and Palin as Corporate Stooges who cynically try to put a populist, ordinary-Joe face on their profits-before-public-interest (Profits First) policies.
By the way, if the Know Nothings of the 1840s said that Catholics "drank . . . and when the nuns had babies they practiced infanticide," they were right. I'm not sure about the claim that "their nunneries were virtual brothels," but there could be some truth there as well. I wonder if the priests were molesting children and covering it up in the 1840s, like we now know they've been doing for the past fifty years?
(I already voted . . . for Nader!)

Mr. Nader should be proud to claim you as a supporter.
