Obama Ignores Torture
Many Americans heaved a sigh of relief last January when President Barack Obama banned the torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
It made the administration look more humane than the Bush-Cheney team. But that is not the whole story.
Obama left unaddressed the possibility of torture in secret foreign prisons under our control as in Abu Ghraib in Iraq or Bagram in Afghanistan, not to mention the 'black sites" sponsored by our foreign clients in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, Thailand and other countries.
"The United States will not torture," Obama said in his directive. But he has been silent on the question of whether the U.S. would help others do the torturing.
Members of Congress knew a lot about U.S. torture practices. But Republicans loyal to the Bush administration and Democrats, too, played along and kept silent at the horror of it all.
Why did no bells ring for the U.S. lawmakers -- particularly those privy to the brutality -- when briefed on the abusive treatment of the captives. Did they owe more allegiance to the CIA than to the honor of our country?
There are hair-raising reports of methods that Americans -- including private contractors -- have used to coerce information from our prisoners.
They include slamming a prisoner against a wall; denying him sleep and food; waterboarding him under so-called enhanced interrogation; and keeping him in a crate filled with insects.
I remember when President Ronald Reagan, marveling at the courage of American soldiers, used to say: "Where do we get such men?" And I have to ask: "Where did we get such people who would inflict so much pain and ruthlessness on others?"
William Rivers Pitt, a best-selling author who wrote "The Greatest Sedition is Silence," recently raised the emotional question of whether U.S. adoption of torture has debased the international standards for treatment of prisoners and that our enemies may now feel that they can torture Americans. Pitt specifically expressed concern about Army Pvt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan last month.
American military leaders had warned President Bush over and over that U.S. torture of prisoners could boomerang against our troops. But he would not listen.
Obama has blocked publication of pictures of the harsh treatment of prisoners from our two ongoing wars -- in Iraq and Afghanistan -- but the word still gets around.

Show AllHe's not ignoring it. He disguising it, just like everything else he does: troop redeployments as withdrawal, insurance industry protections as health care reform, war crimes cover-ups as moving forward, etc., etc.
It's all part and parcel of the red facade's slightly subtler management of the agenda they share with the blue facade. It will last as long as necessary to achieve a return to the requisite levels of public apathy, whereupon the disguises will be cast aside once again as inconvenient and no longer necessary.
true.
he's just giving it a "benevolent face".
it's his way and the establishment's way of PROMOTING torture in an underhanded way - by allowing people - the citizenry - to get "used" to "discussions" about it - until they become inured - and callous
and TORTURE becomes the NEW NORMAL. after all "we talked about it openly"....like so much birthday party small chat......it's so......
Normal.
that's really obama's game..in everything in fact.
from continuing the provocations against other nations, continuing to "humiliate" russia in continuance of the 90's policies and LONG-STANDING USA GOALS ...
for continuing the wall street Scams
it's all about "making people GET USED" to OPENLY defined FASCISM...that does not call itself fascism...but "democracy".
it's the way to CHANGE the ESSENCE of what they claim as democracy - by changing its DEFINITIONS.
it's Orwellian language all over again.
etc....
Do unto others what others might do unto you. By turning a blind eye to our past torture and torture done elsewhere on our behalf we set a dangerous precedent. What do we stand for in the eyes of the world?

You can be sure that our casptured soldiers will be tortured. There is no doubt about that. The reason Bush and Obama ignore this is because they don't and never did give a damn about our soldiers. To them these men and women are just cannon fodder. An other proof of this is the poor conditions of the VA. Pariotism is the last refuge of scoundrels, after all. Support the troops by bringing them home.
Obama has been silent on the question of whether the U.S. would help others do the torturing.
That means that he does give his approval to torture by proxy. You go down the same thuggish highway as Bush, you can rot in the same Hell.
I was just going to point that out... Ah well, Helen also quoted Reagan,
[I remember when President Ronald Reagan, marveling at the courage of American soldiers, used to say: "Where do we get such men?" And I have to ask: "Where did we get such people who would inflict so much pain and ruthlessness on others?"]
Ummm, same place dear.
Also, why would the policy of extraordinary rendition exist if not for the sake of torture? What other purposes does it serve? It would imply that we are incapable of interrogating our own prisoners.
I just wish that Obama would invite all of the detainees and their captors up to the White House so they could have a beer and clear the air-- that's what Manly Men do to clear up complex and seemingly intractable problems, dontcha know!

The scenario conjures up some very interesting images of what "manly men" might actually do in the circumstances.
Sweet Helen, the journalist that launched a thousand good questions (to paraphrase Homer). We've got to do what FDR told us to do: "You elected me President; now hold me to my promises."
Alas, Obama is the house nigger. Uncle Barack. He lied to us; he's lying still.
Funny that both the right and the left don't like him. He's in the center of the corporate cesspool. Forgive them Father, they're only doing what they are mandated to do. CHANGE THE SYSTEM FROM THE BOTTOM UP.
Fat chance. Empires come and go. Do you know of one that changed itself into something sustainable?
I'm a Vietnam vet. I saw things you'd only turn a deaf ear to.
Get even tougher, Helen. What do you have to lose?
[Fat chance. Empires come and go. Do you know of one that changed itself into something sustainable?]
Britain. By getting rid of its empire... I suppose they don't count as they chose not to sustain it, right?
Britain had help getting rid of the empire. They got slammed in two world wars, and the States picked up many of the balls they couldn't juggle as they dropped them.
They made some admirable decisions though, like dumping imperialist Churchill when the war stopped.
Thank you for "slamming me against the wall" with the "house n*gg**" comment. Your post would have held a lot more weight without that low blow. Talk about turning a deaf ear to things. Do you listen to your own hate? And trust me, I'm as disgusted as anyone right now with the lack of transparency and termination of all torture programs in Obama's administration.
It's just not the same without Dick invoking God, Country and waving the American Flag, or is it?
Is there anyone in this Congress with a pair of _____ to go after these Monsters?
You already know the answer. Of course there are many with a pair of _____ ! NOT!!!!!
Problem is there aren't enough with a pair of ovaries to go after these Monsters. Apparently, other types of pairs just won't do.
Jeevee
Chickenhawks seem to be ignorant of the law of Karma!!!
Obama is a constitutional lawyer. There is absolutely no excuse for handing out "get out of jail free cards" to Bush and his inner circle. Like any corporate toady, he is responding to his Board of Directors, "the owners" as Gore Vidal refers to them, instead of his customers.
He is playing as fast and lose with our Constitution as anyone in the last administration. He's racking up his own set of crimes and abuses of power for which he can prosecuted if we ever restore the rule of law in this country.
He is obstructing justice, waging illegal war, and proposing violations of the Bill of Rights that in some cases exceed the overreach of the lasts administration.
My paranoid thought is that Obama isn't prosecuting torturers because he wants torture in his toolkit.
http://www.nrcat.org/
NRCAT is a growing interdenominational movement to gather against torture.
They are establishing a strong presence in Washington and active in calling for inquiry.
Anyone who actually listened to Obama during the campaign cannot be totally surprised, although he's even worse than he sounded then. Nonetheless, he was pretty clear about his basic tendencies. He's lived up to expectations, I think.
What a big deception Obama has been! I feel so bad for those who thought, hoped and trusted that he would be the Messiah. How sad for all of us! At the end of the day, the only difference between Obama and Bush is that the former can pronounce the world "nuclear" and he can drop 'em too just like his successor.
Amnesty wants to get together 10 letters to give to mr. president. one of these gave me a jolt. it came from a career army dude who never could go the torture route. said he had kept his integrity. But the thing is, he presided over, he says, thousands of interrogations. And he says almost all the people he interrogated- just talking, you know, no torture- they said they had come from far and wide to fight with other Muslims against the americans because they knew about our torturing habit, and needed to fight against us.
now most unimperialists have always kinda known that the so-called war on terror was stupid, and also that it was gonna be one big long blowback, causing terror to multiply. We also know that we were right about this notion, and still are. Just the same, it's scary to be told how right we were, are, and to have a real soldier spell it out, by the numbers.
but will obomber read this letter? if he does, will it affect his policy decisions? does anything ever affect his decisions?
Does he even MAKE decisions? this question has been hanging in the air since the bush days. who is really doing all this?
will we ever know?
"Where did we get such people who would inflict so much pain and ruthlessness on others?"
AIPAC?
"Where did we get such people who would inflict so much pain and ruthlessness on others?"
Well, gee. We're the murder, torture, kidnapping, child molesting, and God-knows-what-else capital of the world. These people are our neighbors.
not entirely -- "such people" are common in america.
one might even say - a culture bred on violence
, carefully, studiously wrapped in "honorable concepts" such as "god", "civilizing", "freedom", "rugged individuality", "can do", "team spirit" (ref: Football, wrestling, all other sorts of highly violent and "excitement" generating pastimes) religion, "frontier spirit"...etc...
contains in it a NEED for violence in order to measure itself as "great and exceptional".....
after all -- AIPAC is an invention that does not PRECEDE the inception of VIOLENCE in america since its own founding...starting with practicing violence in order to TAKE land from others...
and doing further violence by actually INSTITUTIONALizing in its own NATIONAL heritage such "entertaining" concepts as making fun of "conquered" people - by use of their names in sports or movies and other American "greatness mythmaking" with NO sense of IRONY whatsoever at the cost to others to be ABLE to take their names for entertainment purposes....
when a society can so easily dehumanize others and generally think nothing of it -- why should TORTURE and other cruelties as a NORM under the surface , or wrapped in noble ideas be so surprising?.
one only has to recall that even a "founding father" such as Thomas jefferson - must have been FULLY AWARE of what they - the "founders" were ABOUT TO DO in the coming years in order to create a "nation" -- MORE cruelty and conquest , by saying:
"As I contemplate if there REALLY is a GOD of JUSTICE ...i TREMBLE for our nation"......
imo -- as intelligent as they were - these folks WERE PRESCIENT and KNEW that the ONLY WAY the USA COULD EVER become the "great nation" that it was supposed to BE - with all the exceptionality they imbued in it -= BEHIND ALL the noble concepts -
the USA would HAVE to be a CRUEL nation.

Polyticks-many blood suckers; (my friends description of politics.)
Notice how Obama's Justice Dept. is busy prosecuting torture victims while simutaneously defending the torture authors? Ode magazine's cover this month has Obama's grandma laughing on the cover. Wonder if she's laughing now.
Torture is endemic in this country. Tasers are torture devices. Restraint chairs are torture devices. Pepper spray is a torture device. Billy clubs are torture devices. These are all used on American citizens daily. Trust the government/police? NEVER!!! Welcome to AmeriKKKa!!!
Obama continues Bush foreign policies, continues Bush's domestic spying policies, implemented his own anti-change, anti-progressive presidential cabinet, and lacks leadership as the health care initiative gets compromised away. Why did Obama bother running for president if he won't fight for change?
Oh Helen, I wish more people would talk about this, this almost complete blind eye to the torture that has gone unpunished and may well still be happening. The horrible injustice our nation is doing to ALL those torture victims, no matter how many there are, because they aren't 'merican. It's scary, and sad, and sick, and I don't think any of the damned fools wars supporters had clue they'd be defending torture, but they've sure learned how to ignore it. And stories came out years ago now, so there isn't any excuse. None. We have no excuse now.
And I wonder, with Obama having all the powers that Bush had, along with a well-trained brain, what he might do, and what he is capable of doing, with surely all the power a man has ever had in history?
In the end, I guess I was suckered into thinking he at least wanted to stop the torture, and maybe do something about it. I kinda thought that, dumb though it was to hope for.
Now I just hope he isn't a monster. That's all.
Bless you Helen for bringing up the unpopular but important issues.
as for OBAMA - he is like Colin Powell...
seeing opportunities to be among the ELITE - they sell their souls by using their intelligence to find justification for becoming what they are in the name of "being a true american"...even if it means giving lip service to the suffering of many , such as those of their own people, and others in similar experience under the HEELS of the BIG BOSS that they SERVE - "american GREATNESS" - that cause these sufferings .
I think that were HE alive - and staying true to his causes for justice and truth - Dr Martin Luther King, Jr
would be HORRIFIED at what he would be witnessing.
the ascendance to the highest levels of power of his fellow black americans
in order to become UNCLE TOMs beyond anyone's wildest dreams...in service of the very things that Dr King died by fighting against:
exploitation for profit, corporatism, wars, and other injustices.
Shows you what a farce the "rule of law" mantra is. Any U.S. citizen who does not break those laws he can to his advantage is a sucker.
Start with the Torture Crimes... a slam dunk if we can get the perps into Federal Court, then go after everything else.

With his twisted if not tortured mind how can he not ignore torture committed by government?
I remember when America was the 'One nation Under God,' country.
Since Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and now Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan - and 'yes' Palestine, we have become the world class thugs that Pol Plot dreamed of becoming.
Now, the US/Israel 'homocide twins' are in the cross hairs of the entire world (the ones we continue to screw out of their natural resources or the transit routes for Caspain basin oil and gas transfers (UNOCAL in Pakistan) and the US oil corporation 'robber barons' in Kosovo, Ossettia, et. al.
Torture and murder, as 'crimes against Humenity' was the US/Britains/Russians basis for the hanging of many of the Nazi monsters as the result of the Nuremburg trials - and here we are committing the same types of horrendous crimes and letting the George W. Bush's, Dick Cheney's, Don Rumsfeld's, Condolezza Rice's, John Yoo's and now the OJT 'community organizer' Barak Obama that has taken to 'torture' like a newly hatched duck to water' and has decided to let these war criminals, 'walk!'
Shameless AmeriKKKa, all of Colonel North's WAR STORIES played 24/7 'ad naseum' as played by the FOX's will never put 'Humpty Dumpty' together again!
