A Bomber Jacket Doesn't Cover the Blood
President Obama has taken a further plunge into the kind of war abyss that consumed predecessors named Johnson, Nixon and Bush.
On Sunday, during his first presidential trip to Afghanistan, Obama
stood before thousands of American troops to proclaim the sanctity of
the war effort. He played the role deftly -- a commander in chief,
rallying the troops -- while wearing a bomber jacket.
There was something candidly macabre about the decision to wear that leather jacket, adorned with an American Eagle and the words "Air Force One." The man in the bomber jacket doesn't press the buttons that fire the missiles and drop the warheads, but he gives the orders that make it all possible.
One way or another, we're used to seeing presidents display such tacit accouterments of carnage.
And the president's words were also eerily familiar: with their cadence and confidence in the efficacy of mass violence, when provided by the Pentagon and meted out by a military so technologically supreme that dissociation can masquerade as ultimate erudition -- so powerful and so sophisticated that orders stay light years away from human consequences.
The war becomes its own rationale for continuing: to go on because it must go on.
A grisly counterpoint to Obama's brief Afghanistan visit is a day in 1966 when another president, in the midst of escalating another war, also took a long ride on Air Force One to laud and boost the troops.
In South Vietnam, at Cam Ranh Bay, President Johnson told the American soldiers: "Be sure to come home with that coonskin on the wall."
Then, too, thousands of soldiers responded to the president's exhortations by whooping it up. And then, too, the media coverage was upbeat.
In a cover story, Life quoted a corporal who called Johnson's visit the "best morale booster Cam Ranh's ever had."
The magazine piece, written by an eminent journalist of the era, Shana Alexander, went on: "Certainly the corporal was right and so was [White House press secretary Bill] Moyers when he later compared the day to a sermon, in that so much of the real meaning is not in what the preacher says but in what his listeners hear."
The article concluded that it had been a "wild and quite wonderful day."
Fast forward 44 years.
"There's going to be setbacks," President Obama told the troops at Bagram Air Base. "We face a determined enemy. But we also know this: The United States of America does not quit once it starts on something."
The applause line lingered as the next words directly addressed the clapping troops: "You don't quit, the American armed services does not quit, we keep at it, we persevere, and together with our partners we will prevail. I am absolutely confident of that."
The president added: "And we'll be there for you when you come home. It's why we're improving care for our wounded warriors, especially those with PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. We're moving forward with the post-9/11 GI Bill so you and your families can pursue your dreams."
Those words provide a kind of freeze frame for basic convolution: The government will help veterans with PTSD and traumatic brain injuries to pursue their dreams.
In the realm of careful abstraction, where actual people are rendered invisible, best not to acknowledge how much better it would be if those veterans could pursue their dreams without suffering from PTSD and traumatic brain injuries in the first place.
But such human realities are for private suffering, not public discourse.
The next morning, the front page of the New York Times reported that the president's visit to Afghanistan "included a boisterous pep rally with American troops."

Show Allmission accomplished. The supposed left wing president gains support from the war loving right.
The blood on Obama's hands keeps creeping further up his arms.
Why haven't we shut down Bagram Prison, site of the infamous dungeon that housed the taxi driver, who was kidnapped and brought there by agents of the Pakistani govt? A few days later, he was murdered- but not before his legs were beaten to a pulp, while hanging from a hook on the ceiling. The incident was not even fully reported for a couple months by the shills for the war machine. What will it take to stop this thirst for death?
You forgot to mention that the taxi driver was innocent of any involvement with terrorists.
Why is the U.S.'s man in Iraq, Allawi, being accused of mass murder....just like Saddam?:
http://www.alternet.org/story/146204/did_iraq_just_elect_a_mass-murderer?page=entire
It will take mankind getting down on its knees and HUMBLY praying forgiveness to the God of Love — by whatever name you call Him/Her.
You'll be wasting your time which should be better spent in working on getting as many of these congressional elite out of office and replacing them with people who are not and will not be beholding to any kind of lobbying firm and that will be a bigger job than wasting energy on your knees hoping that some big old man in a robe and white beard will come down and set things to right because dropping to your knees is the ultimate sign of wanting to be executed.
And all the Obamaites are in denial that they got punk'd again,..... and again and again and again and again. It really is sad to see people making the same mistakes over and over and over again. In case you haven't noticed, the center has it's own Sarah Palin's and Rush Limbaugh's. But you'll figure it out eventually. ... I hope.
Profound thanks to Norman Solomon for bringing us the truth about Afghanistan. I am only stating the incredibly obvious when I say that our mainstream media have bought into the lies and so have our churches from whom we should expect better.
Jim Shea
Our churches have been lying to the people from the beginning. There is no god or gods. The big lie is that some mythical father or mother figure is going to "save" us from our maleficence.
Most of the preachers in the churches are ignorant con man fleecing the fearful, sick, and foolish.
Obama is proof that in America you don't get to the top by telling the truth. Whether it's politics or business, honesty and integrity will have to be sacrificed to succeed. Just like in war you have to rid yourself of your humanity in order to survive. Politics and business are just like war.

Here we go again. Pouring hundreds of billions of dollars, thousands of American lives (not to mention the greater number who suffer disabling wounds), and wasting possibly hundreds of thousands of lives of the native people, with no reasonable vision of what constitutes victory or "mission accomplished" or whatever would signal the end of this meaningless conflict U.S. policymakers chose to initiate and pursue. And all this on some woefully under-investigated hyposthesis about "Al Qaeda" terrorists trained in Afghanistan attacking the U.S. on September 11, 2001. The truth is that everyone except the weapons manufacturers are coming up losers in this war and their "winning" is only contingent on the war's continuation.
This war must stop and we can stop it. First, stop pretending that Barack Obama is some kind of Savior of our liberty and security. Recognize that he is as much a lackey of the corporate oligarchy as Bush ever was; he is even more dangerous because he is smarter, more articulate, and still, despite all he has done to derail meaningful change since taking office, has admirers and supporters in the progressive community. Stop and open your eyes! This guy made some kind of Faustian bargain with the oligarchy that gave him a path to the White House. He is much beholden to his masters and they aren't the voters! Get behind a candidate that espouses truly progressive values, not some nebulous, empty rhetoric about "hope" and "change", and has a proven track record. Right now, I'm not too sure who that might be, following Dennis Kucinich's sell-out on the medical insurance bill.
Hear, hear!
"And all this on some woefully under-investigated hypothesis about "Al Qaeda" terrorists trained in Afghanistan attacking the U.S. on September 11, 2001."
The biggest crime in US history is the WTC attacks. Yet, there was no timely crime scene investigation.
This reminds me of the Kennedy assassination. The body of Kennedy was removed from the jurisdiction of the crime, against all precedent. No timely investigation was had.
Does anyone see a pattern here?
Big Crime committed, no investigation, story made up to frame someone. Big government is the winner.
DCH
What one has to keep in mind is that Obama does not wish to conduct an investigation into the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Obama gave a speech at Cairo, Egypt on June 4, 2009 where he talked about how Al Qaida had [allegedly] killed 3,000 people on that day. He then added:
"These are not opinions to be debated; these are facts to be dealt with."
Was Barack Obama elected president or dictator? Are Americans not allowed to question what happened on 9/11/01? Perhaps George W. Bush informed Obama during the presidential transition that the incoming president must keep the official story alive and well and to pay no attention to the many anamolies that have come to light regarding the Bush administration's feeble explanations of what occurred on that day. It would seem that Barack Obama puts little faith in that old time axiom which said that the truth shall set you free.
Remember, Obama got 1.2 (or more) million dollars from the pharm. industry for his presidential 2008 campaign.
this is the reason that obomber is so dangerous--if he pulls this off--they{corps} will have no need for Sarah--it will be much more to their advantage to keep him in there, because the fools that still believe this bastard will not ever go against him.we all are in deep doo doo.
Our new WAR President, Barack H Obama !
cheerleader in chief
he is starting to appear very ugly in the flesh
sad to say -- I agree...i have long since avoided even LOOKING at his pictures...because I see on them reflections of the blood and gore and things we can not even imagine in suffering for so many people -- in america, outside america, for americans, for non-americans.
that's what is reflected now in his face...MURDER and SUFFERING on so many. so much RUIN and EVIL in the name of "good".
We are delighted that an African-American was voted into the highest office.
That said it is time to impeach him and make him stand in the docket with the past office holding criminals of the 21 century.
What a crappy century so far, last one wasn't all that great either.
We look forward to peak oil when it all comes sliding down.
A bummer from the Bong Hits 4 Jesus Brigade.
The fall of the American empire can now be blamed on a black man. This is a racists dream. Ironic.
Good article by Solomon!
Yes, George W. Obama occupies the White House.
Some of us did INDEED get fooled again!
We, the people of the United States, must change our course. The President, the Congress and our military forces will not do this. The profits from the munitions and the stolen oil are so great that the true leaders of this nation want the wars to never end.
What we the people must do is stop voting for the two corporate parties. The Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, but they do not yet have the right to vote. In the hopes that our votes will be counted in the future (which has not been the case in the past--especially on Diebold voting machines), we must vote for living people that have a strong sense of morals and ethics. We must vote for representatives who will really represent us, and not betray the people as the current group of 'honored' members of the Congress have done.
The corrupt in Congress have voted again and again against the wishes of the people. We must vote them out of office.
Did you want the bankster bailout? Did you want to extend the illegal wars into Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia? Congress voted to do what the people did not want. Are you a supporter of Single Payer Health Care--or at least some sort of public option? Congress does not consider the will of the people but voted for increased profits for the corporations who 'donate' to their campaign funds--and give them vacation trips, fancy dinners, and other perks.
Our government is lying to us and that is the death of democracy. Stand up for democracy and throw the corrupt out of Congress. Don't get mad at one corporate party and vote for the other. There is no lesser evil. Both corporate parties are just that---corporate parties. Ds and Rs do the bidding of their paymasters---not you.
You are absolutely, totally correct.
We need a new party. A party that truly represents who the American People are. I do not believe I am living in a country of Sarah Palin's and Glenn Beck's.
If you sit down with a "Tea Partyer" you will find we all actually share many things in common.
There are many in the Republican AND Democratic parties who see there is something drastically wrong with where we are today and where we are headed.
I believe it is time for a NEW party that will pull the best of the American people together in one common purpose: To end the corporate stranglehold on Congress. And also to end the stranglehold Israel (AIPAC) has on Congress and the presidency.
300 members of Congress just sent a letter to Hillary Clinton stating their unwavering support to Israel: Sieg Heil!!!!
This is treason:
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article25090.htm
Even Gen. Petraeus has warned Obama about how the actions of Israel are endangering U.S. troops in the Middle East.
All these members need to go. ALL incumbents need to go. We need a fresh start. And we all know that America is all about marketing and "branding". We need to launch a NEW political party that is fiscally conservative and socially progressive.
A Single Payer/Improved Medicare for All healthcare system embodies those principles, which is why a majority of Americans support it now.
And just in case you don't understand the danger Israel is creating for us, just watch this short video that details the illegal activities of Israel in the occupied territories:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v-Tpg9xN5k&feature=player_embedded
Somebody let me know when there's a NEW progressive party in this country. I'd join immediately and donate $$ and time.
In the next major election in this country I'd like to walk in and vote for someone I truly believe will vote for MY beliefs and interests, not for corporate America's or AIPAC's.
We'll just have to be careful to hand count all the votes since ESS now controls almost all the voting machines in the country. Yet ANOTHER corporate takeover of probably the most important aspect of our fragile democracy.
It isn't all that new (starting from scratch is really, really difficult): the Green Party, www.gp.org.
Believe me, I've heard all the criticisms, and they all have the same answer: we don't run on corporate money. We're almost all volunteers, with the limitations that come with that. The party is exactly what its PEOPLE make of it.
If you want it better, you're hardly alone. Join and put your work and your money where your beliefs are.
The future needs YOU.
It's so ironically funny to read all the stories breaking and the comments flowing...
It's a shame that no one seemed to hear the clarion calls 15 or 20 years ago by radical progressives. Did no one listen to rage against the machine? Consolidated? Did no one pay attention to "futurists" who have predicted this course of events with amazing accuracy?
This election cycle people in America will do as they've done for the last 40 years or so... they will bitch, complain, swear, cuss, agrue, fight, condemn the current crop of politicians to hell... then vote them all right back into office, because after all... "...they're all bad... except mine..." And, of course, any open seats will be filled by yet another lawyer or ex-policeman or judge or lower level career politician.
A generation of this has brought us to the point we're at today. After this election cycle, we will finally reach a point where voting will literally mean nothing.
Our "leaders" have finally compromised the entire process and system.
Think not? Who will represent the "progressive" vote in November? Kucinich? Nader? Ried? Pelosi? et. al.
Just sign me "friend of Ishmael"...
Here is one our problems. One of the comments at the end of the article in the NYT referred to here:
"Obama is the real patriot, aggressively lobbying Karzai to create the most supportive environment for US personnel, and showing real tactical brilliance as Commander and Chief.
Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld saw US personnel as fodder for their vision of the 'professional army' as a private army deployed in service of Big Oil, to whose allegiance they really swore.
Thank God for the real patriot who occupies the White House now."
There were more like this, too. And, of course, on HuffPo, again, thousands of similar comments, plus the women gushing over how great O looks in the jacket, etc. Really sick. How many of these people are there in America? Are sick, delusional people like this the majority?
There IS NO separation from those who give the orders and those who carry out the murder/ terrorism... obomber and his fellow mass murderers are destroying the heart and soul of their nation ! The deluded/ brainwashed masses go right along with the rah rah fascist amerikan obsession with winning/ killing !

Norman,
I previously heard Obama reference a bomber jacket that belonged to one of his older male relatives. He referred to it as "cool."
War is not cool.
Obama seems to hold the romantic version of war in his head. We need to elect candidates that recognize that war is not cool, and that policies of exploitation aren't either.
"We did not choose this war." What a GD lie. We've been imperializing in the third world for over a century now. Cheney and People for a New American Century (PNAC) wanted "a new Pearl Harbor," so after stripping out our air defenses on nine-nine and nine-ten, Cheney allowed his 15 Saudi dupes to attack us. How was the most heavily-defended air space in the world, that around our Pentagon, magically left unprotected on nine-eleven? Smells like High Treason to me. Try Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld and Obama for war crimes, torture and crimes against humanity in the World Court at The Hague, Netherlands.
Democracy cannot exist in Afghanistan or Iraq or Haiti when countries are militarily occupied by US soldiers and US Hessians. Our puppet regime in Afghanistan rigged its own elections. Karsai is just a worthless CIA stooge. We were never attacked by the Afghan people.
Or are US war crimes imperial in Afghanistan now "groovy" since they're now being committed by a black President Obama, huh Dems and "progressives?"
US out of Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti and Iceland now.
...and out of the rest of the world. How many bases does this base country have on the planet?
When George W. Bush left the White House, he must have left the script on the coffee table, because Obama is following the same script.
Another reason I voted for Ralph Nader and Matt Gonzalez.
Hey! I found a place in Obomba's speech were we both agree. " The American Armed Forces do not quit".
Guess Barry forgot about Vietnam.
Barry didn't REALLY forget about vietnam.
he didn't forget it any more than he "forgot" about Reverend MArtin Luther King, JR>
what Barry DOES is -- INVERT what he KNOWS about vietnam and King, JR.
and that is the WORST of all of his sins.
he TWISTED them to his purposes - KNOWINGLY.
the way he twisted REverend King's memory in his Nobel Speech to SERVE WAR - where King stood AGAINST war of ALL kinds....
he also twists VIETNAM to his ends of continuing WAR.
It's rather amazing the way Obama channels Bush. Eerie.
krp. at least it is possible to think that a thought process and substantive reasons are behind Obama's decision to clean up the mess W left behind when he inexplicably turned on Iraq.
Good article by Solomon, who seems to be a different person when he's not indulging his sorry lesser-evil domestic politics.
Since I avoid direct observation of Obama, I didn't catch the bomber jacket detail until I saw a clip on "Democracy Now". But I've always suspected that Obama shares his predecessor's fetish for military garb, and would eventually turn up in a flight suit-- or, as in this case, an "honorary" military costume.
Funny how a questionable wardrobe choice can make a monster look childish and goofy; Obama looks like a little kid wearing an adored older brother's high-school varsity basketball jacket.
I presume that CD visitors check out "Democracy Now". Today the show featured Tavis Smiley discussing a documentary about Martin Luther King that examines Obama in the context of King's legacy.
It's obvious that Obama has nothing in common with King except the problematic designation of both as "African-American icons". Put another way, even a glance at Obama all puffed up in his cool bomber jacket reveals another amoral narcissist who would be a more traditional variety of King.
Hi OS - Nice comment, but I don't understand what you mean by this: "Obama all puffed up in his cool bomber jacket reveals another amoral narcissist who would be a more traditional variety of King." Thanks.
Joe
Selected passages from Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama's March, 2010 speech to the troops in Afghanistan:
"We did not choose this war. This was not an act of America wanting to expand its influence, of us wanting to meddle in someone's business. We were attacked viciously on 9/11.....
"Plots against our homeland, plots against our allies, plots against the Afghan and Pakistani people are taking place as we speak right here.....
"We are going to disrupt and dismantle, defeat and destroy al Qaeda and its extremist allies. That is our mission.....
"We're providing more helicopters, more intelligence and reconaissance capabilities, more special operations forces, more armored vehicles that can save lives.....
"And the American people back home are noticing. We have seen a huge increase in support in - stateside, because people understand the kinds of sacrifices that you guys are making, and the clarity of mission that you're bringing to bear."
Well, at least Barack did not repeat the major lie from his West Point escalation address about how the United States attacked and overthrew the Taliban because Mullah Omar stubbornly refused to turn over Osama bin Laden, Zwahiri and their cohorts in crime for trial under international law. That noted (to give credit where credit is due), perhaps the end of the President's remarks is the best place to begin separating reality from spin, fact from wishful thinking fiction.
Here in the blue state, Main Street midwest American heartland of 2010, as close as I can tell there is no discernible groundswell of popular support for Obama's escalation of violence in the Af/Pak theatre of war. Our local anniversary peace vigil, which featured planting 187 memorial white crosses, one for each dead soldier from Michigan thusfar in the post-9/11 global war on terror, generated decent local press coverage, the usual turnout, and nothing remotely resembling the raucus, flag waving hostility from hawkish passers by that earlier antiwar protest events routinely triggered.
Where is this huge increase in stateside support? Is the Commander-in-Chief lying to the troops, or is he lying to himself? Who's kidding who? There is no more clarity today to this mindless military intervention than there was nine years ago, and there is significantly less grassroots support now than there was back then.
30,000 more troops, more helicopters, more special operations forces, more armored vehicles (and surely more Predator drones) do not save lives. They take lives. You don't put out a fire by pouring gasoline on it. Killing insurgents to create an incentive for the insurgents to negotiate is like trying to bomb the north Vietnamese into concessions at the Paris peace talks. The means chosen is counterproductive.
The 2001 Congressional AUMF resolution authorized US military force to be directed only against the coconspirators responsible for the WTC attack. Period. Nothing about disrupting, dismantling, defeating, or destroying a whole global network of boogeymen and its "extremist allies" wherever found. This is classic mission creep - like Nixon trying to justify the invasion of Cambodia by pointed back at the Gulf of Tonkin resolution.
Hell yes there are plots galore against the US "homeland", America's NATO allies in the continuing occupation endeavor, the Karzai regime, the current civilian government of Pakistan, and against broad ethnic and tribal factions of the regional populations. There are more of these plots brewing today than there were when Bush, Cheney, Rummy, and friends launched this crusade into the great Afghan graveyard of empires precisely because we, the foreign military forces, are there - meddling in someone else's business - in a war the United States government chose to start.
Keep doing what you're doing, Barack, and you're destined to go the way of LBJ.
Bill from Saginaw
Hey Bill, maybe you were being sarcastic when calling it a lie, but I *thought* that the reason why we are in Afghanistan is because "Mullah Omar stubbornly refused to turn over Osama bin Laden, Zwahiri and their cohorts in crime for trial under international law".
Man, I just know I'm going to get egg on my face over this (because I usually find your comments spot-on and A+++), but I must be having a serious brain fart today.
That was the excuse, but it was a lie: the Taliban offered to turn over bin Laden if offered evidence of his crime (thus meeting their obligation as hosts). None was offered, either because there was none or because the Bushies preferred war, or, of course, both. (I'm personally skeptical of any story that came from that administration.)
WTF -
Nothing sarcastic about it at all.
Back in October of 2001, Secretary of State Colin Powell used Pakistan as an diplomatic intermediary (the US did not formally recognize the Taliban government in Kabul) to deliver an ultimatum to Mullah Omar: to avoid military attack that had already been authorized by the US Congress, the Taliban had to turn over Osama bin Laden, Zwahiri, and the rest of the Al Qaeda leadership responsible for the 9/11 attack on the WTC and Pentagon.
All of the talking head experts knew there was no way those crazy jihadi Taliban were going to withdraw traditional Muslim hospitality from Osama, who had fought side by side with the mujadaheen to oust the Soviets. But surprize! Mullah Omar responded by acknowledging (1) Osama, Zwahiri and others were indeed inside Afghanistan and (2) the Taliban were willing to turn them over to custody of a "neutral Muslim state" for eventual trial under either international law, or Islamic law.
The Bush White House instantly rejected this olive branch, started warming up the B-52's on Diego Garcia, and placed a $2 million "dead or alive" bounty on Mullah Omar's head to match the one already out for Osama bin Laden. No way was Uncle Sam going to get drawn into negotiations with religious nutcakes who tolerated terrorists. The bombs started to drop and the CIA walk around cash was dispersed among the local Afghan warlords. The Afghan Taliban regime fell, and Mullah Omar, Osama, Zwahiri, and the others vanished into Waziristan and/or Pakistan.
So much for exhausting all your diplomatic options before letting slip the dogs of war.
There was a narrow window of opportunity - three or four days perhaps - in which it looked like an invasion of Afghanistan could be avoided, and Osama bin Laden and Zwahiri could be held for some sort of formal trial for their involvement in the events of 9/11/01. But the Bushies junked the whole initiative out of hand apparently for ideological reasons. After all, nobody could fight a real war on terror if we went the wimpy lawyer route.
Much like the big lie about the US invasion of Iraq being caused by Saddam's refusal to let UN weapons inspectors come in and do their work (the UN inspectors had to be pulled out in order for the shock & awe to kick off), a similar urban legend has been cultivated by the Pentagon's psy ops boys claiming the Taliban stubbornly refused to stop harboring Al Qaeda. It is pure hokum, self-serving revisionist history of the highest order.
Mullah Omar's wholly unexpected offer to hand over Osama was reported in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and (in passing) by most of the mainstream media in late October and early November of 2001, but invariably characterized as a last minute posturing manuever, a ploy seeking to delay the onset of a US invasion which everybody who knew anything was sure was absolutely necessary and inevitable.
I was surprized and deeply distressed to hear this big lie from the Bush/Cheney era publicly regurgitated and given legitimacy by the new president when Obama spoke at West Point in his escalation announcement speech this last December. And I was serious about giving the president credit where due when he did not double down and repeat this whopper last weekend in his pep talk to the troops at Bagram.
Bill from Saginaw
Bill from Saginaw - In addition to what you wrote both the offer to turn over Ben Laden and the inspectors voluntarily withdrawn from Iraq before a bombing campaing also took place under Clinton, in the late 1990's.
For over thirty years now, each administration carried on an escalated policy of its predecessor. Those who say the two-party system is a farce are totally right. Zbig told us that we started to meddle into Afghanistan in the late 70's to draw the Russians in so they could have their own Vietnam-like defeat.
And recently CD ( Margolis?)informed us that OBL had his body guards and satellite phone removed and was virtually under House Arrest in Kandahar guarded by Taliban agents.
That's Barry Soetoro! Vote 2010. Impeach Soetoro 2011.
I think Obama wears this bomber costume just to see what the reaction is. They like having that kind of information.
Well well well. The Great National Asshole has finally donned the leather Air Force pilot's jacket. Bombs away! Who says this jackass is intelligent? What a throbbing hard-on he must have in that photo above! Just check out that effing pose. Revolting! Disgusting! The last scoop of mashed potatoes in the barrel.
