U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich lasted less than 24 hours as headliner for the Palm Beach County Democratic Party's annual fundraising dinner after some of the party's elected officials blasted the Ohio Democrat's stance on Israel and threatened to skip the event.

Kucinich, who has a history of criticizing the actions of the Israeli government and opposing congressional resolutions in support of Israel, withdrew Friday as the keynote speaker for next week's dinner after being announced Thursday.
The liberal former presidential candidate had been called in as a last-minute replacement for moderate Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu. Landrieu was dropped as keynoter this week because party activists were upset by her refusal to commit to blocking a Republican filibuster of health care overhaul legislation.
While Landrieu was the target of behind-the-scenes grumbling, Kucinich sparked public revolt.
State Rep. Kevin Rader, D-Delray Beach, said Friday he was withdrawing his pledge to buy a $1,500 table for the dinner and would encourage other Democrats to boycott the event because of Kucinich's record on Israel.
State Sen. Ted Deutch, D-Boca Raton, who's running for the seat that U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler is vacating, called Kucinich "someone whose position on Israel stands in total opposition to the conscience of this community."
County Commissioner Burt Aaronson called the selection of Kucinich "an absolute horror" and said he would refuse to share the podium with him.
Kucinich has opposed sanctions against the anti-Israel government of Iran. In January, he was one of only five House members to vote against a resolution condemning Hamas rocket attacks on Israel and reaffirming Israel's "right to act in self-defense to protect its citizens against Hamas's unceasing aggression."
Kucinich said Friday in an e-mail to county Democratic Chairman Mark Alan Siegel that he supports the Jewish state and its right to defend itself and said his critics are "falsely characterizing me as 'anti-Israel.' "
But Kucinich said he did not want the controversy surrounding him to hinder the party's ability to raise money, so he would "humbly withdraw."
Siegel said the decision to invite Kucinich was made by a "leadership circle" of about 20 people and no one raised concerns about Kucinich's record on Israel.
Siegel heard those concerns Friday.
"People feel he's anti-Israel. I don't read it that way, but the leadership of AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee) and other elements of the Jewish community do and I don't want to get into an argument with them," said Siegel, who is Jewish.
Siegel said he doesn't know who the party will get as a keynote speaker for the dinner, which is scheduled for Nov. 14 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.
The event has traditionally been called the Jefferson-Jackson dinner, but the name was changed this year to the Truman-Kennedy-Johnson dinner because of qualms among party activists about Thomas Jefferson's slave ownership and Andrew Jackson's Indian-removal policies.
Siegel said the nixing of two keynote speakers this week shows party leaders are listening to the concerns of Democrats.
"In both cases, the same thing happened," Siegel said. "We responded to complaints from important elements of our constituency and neither one of them is speaking."

Because it claims to speak for all Jews, the existence of the Zionist entity, Israel, puts all Jews at risk, not just in the settler-state but in the good old U.S.A. as well. And then even anti-Zionist Jews will be at risk, because how many people are going to believe an American-Jew who says he or she opposes Israel, let alone supports justice for Palestine. Why would they, considering how many times they'd heard Zionists claim that israel speaks for all Jews. Which is why Jews who understand that Zionism not only is racist, but that by way of its potential for undermining the trust that non-Jews have in the patriotism of Jewish-Americans, is inherently anti-Semitic as well. The answer, of course, is for Jewish-Americans to stand up and say, "Oh no, Israel, you don't speak for us, you speak only for Zionists, which we are not. I have a problem with the term "anti-Semite" because not all Semites are Jews AND not all Jews are Semites. From the Oxford English Dictionary, the term means "a member of a people speaking a Semitic language, in particular the Jews and Arabs." To use the term "anti-Semite" to mean someone is anti Zionist, is to ignore the fact that the Palestinians are Semites. I support equal rights for the Palestinians. I do not support the militarized, Zionist State of Israel.
But then, I have not supported the past 50 years of wars around the world that have been fought by the United States, in the name of "democracy, freedom and security".
I do not oppose the existence of Israel, but I oppose the control of Israel by a minority of militants who continue to oppress the people who were there for generations before the formation of the State of Israel. I have never fully understood the history of _why_ the Jews were brought there after WW-II. Yes, there are Jews who have an ancestral connection to that region, but there are many who do not. What right did _anyone_ have to decide that the Jews should be brought there AND that the Palestinians who were already there should be displaced?
Much of the recent violent history of the Middle East is a direct result of VERY BAD DECISIONS that were made by the British early in the 20th Century. Those mistakes were compounded by the forced takeover of Palestinian homes by the Zionists.
Part of my view of Israel is influenced by the attack on the USS Liberty during the 1967 Arab-Israeli conflict. The son-in-law of my neighbors was killed in that attack, leaving his wife and a young son. Israel has _never_ admitted that they KNEW it was an American ship, or that they committed a WAR CRIME when they attacked us.
I favor the withdrawal of Israel to the pre-war boundaries ... which is a requirement of a United Nations Resolution, which Israel continues to ignore.

This is not sufficient. It's very easy to interpret the words democracy, freedom, justice, to achieve any goals you desire. Thus, the US has invaded Afghanistan to support democracy, freedom, and justice.
So, here is what is sufficient - to be an anti-Zionist you must explicitly denounce the existence of Israel as a Jewish state, that is, you must support the dismantling of the Jewish government in Israel, and replacing it with a plurilist democratic government that included all of Palestine, this is commonly known as the one-state solution.
When you get right down to it, even the one state solution is Zionist. The Jews will have their homeland, although they will not have exclusive control of the government.
Consider this, a burglar breaks into your house and throws you and your family into the street. The Likud Zionist says that the burglar gets to keep the house and the adjacent houses on the block as well. The 'humanist' Zionist says that the burglar gets to keep only the one house. The one-state solution Zionist says that the original occupants of the house should be re-admitted, and all can share. A true non-Zionist would say that the burglars have to get the hell out of the house.

I believe the problem is that the conservative republicans and the right are absolutely terrified about this congressman who has a conscience and is anti-war and what we're hearing and seeing here is the beginning of attempts to corrupt Congressman Kucinich's image and character before he gets even more popular--but I still praise him for his anti-war views and his philosophies in general. He is a good man and definately NOT anti-Israel and I will follow this man and hope that he gets a chance at presidential nomination!

As far as I know Dennis Kucinich is just anti war, NOT anti-semitic. I have met him and had no issues. I am more concerned about a UFO comment that he made. Truth is I am anti-UFO. I think sanctions should be brought against all players involved until they get *it*. Palestinian Israali and Iranian blood pours out from gun shots all the same. Children are dying on all sides. Palm Beach County in an uproar over Dennis Kucinich's Israel stance? That only means one thing: Bernie Madoff didn't do a good enough job of sending those Palm Beach County cannibals straight back to their humble begginings.

Until U.S. Jews are convinced that unmitigated support for the right-wing acts of Israeli forces is detrimental to their wealth, until it is crystal clear that they will face humiliation, or at least ostracizing, when they try to spin the atrocities occurring, the world will be a very unstable place. Whether you believe that this is the only choice, and that without arming Israel with nuclear bombs, the U.S. will lose that spot in the middle of South Western Asia, never has been the Middle East, or if you think that because they seem more fit, it's okay for Israeli Jews to take land and kill innocents, Israel will be the proximal cause for the final end for this lost people. Once Jews reach the tipping point, once more people quit buying their act, it will slide into a hell no one has ever seen before and nothing will help them. If Jews want to coerce and pay for "loyalty" they will learn it will never last forever. They are scared, rightfully so. They are hated, at their own doing. When you broadcast how you want your children to only marry your own kind and when you practice apartheid or worse to those who don't have power, you are living on borrowed time.
I am not speaking for Dennis, but I believe Dennis does not "oppose" Israel because he truly is a man of peace. To be truly a man of peace means he is "for all" to live in peace. So to criticize policies is not the same as "to oppose."

DK, Dennis has already proven his courage. It is courageous to be willing to speak truth to power, knowing one is vilified for doing so. And as I said above, he would not be a person likely to throw stones at others. He would never want to say or mean what you wrote he should say.
He may have had reasons for his past support for the Democrats, and I agree with you it is now going to be problematic for his credibility if he continues past his term. From what I have seen of him I trust his integrity.
It is not a lie to say one "supports the Jewish state" while supporting a "Palestinian state" if his opinion is that could work. Again, Dennis could not "oppose" anyone, as a man of peace, who would see ANY conflict as an OPPORTUNITY for a peaceful solution. I can't judge but I don't think Dennis is a fake. I also prefer his rhetoric to rhetoric that condemns anyone.

Israel "lobbies" congress for $billions, which it gets, then it kicks back a small amount to bribe all congress members with "campaign contributions", which they eagerly accept.

Define support for Israel. Does it mean cowering in silence when Israel engages in war crimes? If you truly were in support of Israel then you would speak out against the wide spread and continuing crimes it is committing against the Palestinian people. you would take the time to speak out against the collective psychosis that has fallen like a shroud over her with not only the hawks and the power hungry in government but too many of her ordinary citizens blathering and sputtering and quivering and calling for war against what they call the demon Iran rising up to kill them all. Do not believe he would be so effective outside the D party. Nader, also a man of integrity, working for citizens' rights and the country's good, pulls no weight with government and too little with voters. A good course of action now would be a campaign for a Constitutional amendment banning all private money in election campaigns and banning all gifts to officeholders.
An excellent case can be made by showing the incredible amounts of money poured into defeating the healthcare reform this year and defeating the Clintons' proposed healthcare changes fifteen years ago. The many lobbying campaigns we have seen during the past several Congresses and the resulting legislation show that our government must NOT continue to be bought.
Another useful Constitutional amendment would declare the vectors of communication to the public to be the property of the citizens with use to be licensed by an FCC conditional on local usefulness, competition, and fairness/truth.
We need an amendment declaring corporations nonpersons. One "justification" for corporate personhood is that corporations seem to have other rights (owning property is one). A corporation is a mechanism for avoiding liability. It cannot read, write, think, speak or vote. Persons act for it, it does not act.
When the time comes, contribute to Kucinich's (and Nader's) campaigns for office. Their voices are too valuable to lose.

It would be nice if Olbermann would point that out on his program. But since Grayson has appeared as a guest on Countdown before, that prospect appears highly unlikely.

If Kucinich is actually thinking of doing this, then perhaps he is finally waking up to the fact that the Democrats are not progressive and are just as militaristic as the Republicans. But I will be surprised if he will actually employ common sense by rejecting the Democrats and joining with a party that is more aligned with his progressive view points.

A very effective way to silence Israel's critics. The other side of this coin is the perception it gives to gentiles. Namely, the unquestioning support of Israel, regardless of the war crimes they commit, makes American Jews look like an Israeli fifth column to many Americans.
If only Kucinich had the courage and integrity to send these American-Israeli loyalists a copy of The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy by John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt. I do not understand why the Left continues to villify those that have thus far carried the baggage of justice. No one is perfect, but Kucinich has done more for the progressives than nearly anyone else. To question him morality is obtuse.

But my point is that he is one of the very few Democrats who is willing to do this. Why is he allowing himself to continually get kicked in the teeth by his party? Is he that much of a masochist to not realize that his desire for peace and justice, as you say, is continually thwarted by his Democratic colleagues?
Kucinich is an intelligent man and it is way past the point that he finally acknowledge that the Democrats have no intention of implementing, much less listening, regarding what he has to say, both domestically and in respect to foreign policy.

I think that you misconstrued my meaning. The implication is that if Kucinich was to display a moral backbone then he would not remain in the Democratic party since the Democrats have absolutely no regard at all for what Kucinich has to say. As I had attempted to explain in other comments, the hope is that K will finally come to the realization that the Democratic party is anathema to his beliefs and that he might be able to attract a strong third party base if he were to ultimately break away from, as title of a book has called them, the Savage Mules.
Would they listen to him any more if he were an independant or third party candidate? I would rather have him in congress bitching than outside looking in and bitching - like the rest of us.
