TEHRAN - Iran on Friday denied there had been any confrontation between its forces and a U.S. ship in the Gulf, Iranian media reported, after a U.S. official said a ship contracted by the U.S Military Sealift Command fired on an Iranian vessel.
Some media suggested that, if there had been an incident, it may have involved a private boat that could have been Iranian.
"There has been no confrontation between Iranian boats and U.S. military vessels in the Persian Gulf," the state-owned English-language satellite channel Press TV reported on its website, citing a source in Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
Other Iranian media echoed that report, including the official IRNA news agency and Iran's state-run Arabic-language channel Al-Alam.
"The (Guards) official said the (Guards') navy is committed to its duty to guard the coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea," Press TV said in a later broadcast report.
"He (the official) said Iranian coastguards are prepared to respond in the strongest manner to any possible attack from a U.S. or British vessel," Press TV added.
The Revolutionary Guards are an ideological arm of Iran's armed forces with a separate command structure to the regular military. One of their duties is guarding vital border areas.
"Even if there was a shooting ... American forces have likely shot at a non-military or fishing boat, and even then one cannot be certain that it was Iranian," Iran's Mehr News Agency reported.
A U.S. defence official earlier said a ship contracted by the U.S Military Sealift Command had fired at least one shot toward an Iranian boat.
Many Iranian and other small craft ply the waters between Iran and Gulf Arab states, many of them smuggling goods into the Islamic Republic.

Show AllBush is insane? Actually that may be a compliment for him. If he was insane he'd have an excuse. He's a psycopath though. Well, guess that's the same thing isn't it? ___ Never mind.
Face it Americans, we have and are being led by the INSANE. Considering just how inept and irresponsible this Administration has been over the last 30 years, and especially these past 8 years, don't act shocked or surprised. These inhumane nazi's want war, as long as its someone else who has to die. Just picture this: These so-called military and govenment bigwigs are incapable of batting an eye when thousands of little children, millions of Arabs and thousands of American soldiers are blown apart. They have no HEART, and that goes for any country that even toys with the idea of starting a nuclear war, or any war. Welcome to this Insane world. And when God gave out brains, he/it must have left out any for the male subhuman species. Or God just gave up considering the human race lost.
Israel not suicidal?
This is a fallacy!
I have had a number of conversations with Zionist who told me that Israel will destroy itself before it gives any of "its land" back to the Arabs. They told me that Israel has nuclear bombs strategically buried to explode if they are "taken over" by another country. They feel if they cannot have the state of Israel, no one can have the land.
So please don't insult us by claiming Israel is not suicidal.
Those presently in charge of our government and the Pentagon are "left behinders". They believe with all their "minds" that the earths population must be destroyed in order for the second coming of Christ. No matter how foolish it seems to most of us that they would believe they will be one of the supposed 144,000 saved souls, they do believe this.
Just as a suicide bomber believes they are going to the promised land.
I would love to see this craziness stopped, but the more contact I have with people who believe this and everyday Americans who go along to get along, the more convinced I am that there is no stopping these folks.
We are all doomed!
I fought these folks for 5 years but I am tired, frustrated and have become resigned to the fact that perhaps the destruction of the human race is the best thing for this world.
The majority certainly do not deserve to exist.
In the words of our immortal second in command,
"So?"
They will do whatever they damn well please.
Kem:
I feel there are many people who post on this site that are OB fans. So OB against McCain? I will put my money on McCain. Not that I don't want to see change but the defeat of America was over the second the first brick from the WTC hit the ground.
Tsunami:
many of my posts has said it doesn't matter. I was just trying to give a last glimmer of hope that parts of the system still work. Yes they can fix it but do you feel they can fix it on a country level? I don't know if they can. I have also said McCain will be the next President and asked for a bet that no one took.
Now that was my glimmer of hope the other options open well who knows what will happen if Americans are pushed enough.
Israel WILL NOT want the nuclear fall out from US NUKES hitting Iran, couple that with China and Russia not sitting by and watching the US try to grab ALL the mid east oil. (and don't forget that Ukraine, has most of the old soviet block nukes, and is for all intents independent from the current Russian regime)
Someone mentioned about the HUGE pool of young Iranians that would take on the US in an attack on their country , but failed to realize China can put more "boots on the ground " than the US and Britain combined, sheer numbers will require the US to use nukes in that scenario.
But, unfortunately the MIC and Bu$hco will invariably continue down this road of death, partly from sheer greed and partly to bring about armageddon for the religious right wing nuts, who have convinced themselves that "God is on our side" , despite the teachings of their own "Good Book", that absolutely says otherwise.
We are in for some nasty times ahead and the shite is hitting the fan in bigger and bigger chunks every day...
I can only hope that reason and sanity will prevail, i mean how many billions does one person need?
"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran," Senator Clinton told ABC News, asked what she would do as president were Iran to launch a nuclear attack on Israel."In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them."
KP - splitting hairs? And your agenda? Any way you choose to interpret them, Clinton's remark amounts to a furthering conviction for the military hegemony of American imperialism and the continuing moral depravity of humanity. Clinton's remark is as basic as any bar bully's primordial instinct - punch and punch back; whereas a true and evolved leader, a wise and good person understands the strength and resolve to walk away from a fight and to prove themself through right living and moral conviction - like Ghandi, or Jesus - and not through furthering violence and intolerance.
When do folks here begin to understand that rightness is not a matter of political tactics, military might, or obsessing over who said what? The future of humanity can only be when rooted in cooperation and respect for life, all life. Period.
You insist on spreading that lie about what Hillary said also ~WSWS~.___ How come? You have a political agenda?
That's NOT what she said, ___ read the ENTIRE transcript of the interview.
Keep in mind that governments regularly float "trial balloons" to see just how outraged or, conversely, just how acquiescent the general public is to a given possibility.
I remember during the Vietnam War, I believe it was in 1967, LBJ floated the trial balloon that he wanted to use nuclear wepaons on North Vietnam. The public was so shocked, so outraged, that the balloon was quickly lowered, not to be raised again.
To those people who cyncially throw up their hands and "blame the victim" — re. the American public — keep in mind, too, that the ruling class is scared to death, repeat: SCARED TO DEATH of what the general public is capable of doing. They have the power, but we have the numbers.
Also, capitalism is in a state of serious decay. Given that economic fact, the US ruling class is trying to offset the US' overall economic decline by flexing its military muscle. Clearly, the attempt at compensation won't work and *isn't* working.
These are desperate moves the ruling class is making.
Assuming we as a species avoid nuclear destruction, the march of history favors the general population. The social and economic strains and tensions capitalism has created are far too great, far too overwhelming for those in power to sustain their infantile, "patriotic," religious-political myths and illusions much longer.
Don't be fooled, the ruling class is afraid, very afraid. Public consciousness can and will change quickly. The social and economic forces that have come about as a result of the dramatic shift of wealth upwards — an upward shift of wealth unprecedented in the history of the world — has, ironically, made the ruling class extremely vulnerable.
David Walsh writes:
"The American population has made two revolutions, and demonstrated in the Civil War in particular, the most remarkable qualities of nobility and self-sacrifice. The Russian people made three revolutions in the 20th century. The Polish socialist movement was a mass movement that produced a Luxemburg. Has the bottom dropped out? Has a new species replaced the old one? I don't think so; it doesn't make sense. I'm not convinced that the introduction of modern means of communication and what have you has changed the fundamental picture. People are held back by the conceptions they have. Changed circumstances will change those conceptions."

In short, we, the people, are far stronger than many of us think. Organized, we can win -- unorganized, it's easy to see us as powerless. Your choice.
Here's how pathetic and Vichy-like the Democratic Party is. ... Hillary threatens to "obliterate" Iran; and Obama obediently buys into the madness.
Quoting from the following article by Joe Kay, "Hillary Clinton threatens to 'obliterate' Iran":
"Clinton's remark (re. her threat to 'obliterate' Iran) has received little criticism from the American media, and the most that Obama could bring himself to say was that it was it was unnecessary 'saber rattling,' while pledging to respond 'forcefully and swiftly' to any Iranian attack. ...
"Asked if the US should treat an Iranian attack on Israel as an attack on the United States, Obama pledged direct negotiations with Iran but insisted, 'I will take no options off the table when it comes to preventing them from using nuclear weapons or obtaining nuclear weapons.' ...
"There are no substantial differences between Clinton and Obama on policy. They both support the continued US occupation of Iraq. They both defend the interests of American imperialism in the Middle East and globally. There are, however, tactical differences over US policy in the Middle East, with sections of the Democratic Party establishment critical of unconditional support for Israel. …
"Clinton's comments are revealing not only in what they say about her own campaign, but what they say about the Democratic Party as a whole, including Obama. No one in the Democratic Party establishment challenges the basic premise underlying the threats by Clinton against Iran: that US policy in the Middle East is aimed at countering Iranian aggression. Neither of the candidates will point out that the policy of unprovoked aggression has been practiced not by Iran, but by the United States, which has killed over 1 million Iraqis, and turned 4 million into refugees, in its determination to gain control of the country and the region.
"The danger of war against Iran — or against China, Russia, or some other country — does not come just from the Republican Party. While the Democrats seek to posture as critics of the Iraq war, they are just as committed as the Republicans to the aims the war was meant to secure, and they will just as surely use military force in the future to achieve these aims."

~TSUNAMI~ You stated Hillary voted to designate the Iranian military as a terrorist organization, therefore implying what ~Canuckchuck~ stated is correct. That's swift logic on your part.
Anyone can state any military complex could be a terrorist organization and be correct. That has nothing to do with saying her agreeing with Bush that we should bomb Iran. Hillary does not agree with Bush that we should. She does not agree with Bush or McCain that we should maintain permanent military bases in Iraq either. She does not vote with Lieberman either, Obama has and does. ___ Check it out. ___ ~Canuckchuck~ is totally wrong with his comment and so are you.
I'm not arguing with you BTW. I reply to you in the off chance someone may your comment and in ignorance tend to agree with you.

The problem is: The Mafia in the White House now was not voted in. It stole the election not once, but twice. So it is not accountable to voters.
"It is called DEMOCRACY folks so start to use it"
Democracy has faded out of existence in the USA, it's now a police state. In this administration, democracy is just a slogan used when it suits the agenda at hand. Remember what happened in Haiti? The US goons kidnapped the free and fair elected President and renditioned him to Africa. The free and fiar election in Iran resulted in "AXIS of EVIL." The free and fair election in Lebanon empowed Hezbolah. The free and fair election in Palestine empowed Hamas. And don't forget the millions who voted under dangerous conditions (the purple fingers) in Iraq to get the occupiers out of their country. Now they are labeled "Al-Qaida in Iraq," "Terrorists," or "Insurgents." In Afghanistan, "warlords," "Taliban," or "Terrorists." But our Mafia is trying to spread democracy throughout the Middle East, and around the world. What a fake adminstration.
Our government lies, how can we believe anything they say.they think were all sheep and will believe any thing they say. there supposed to do what we the people want them to do,it's I the government, and they say we do what they want. join we the people and robert schulz to help take our country back
What will the "blowback" be from a Bush-Cheney attack on Iran?
Will they use "bunker-busting" nuke bombs, as rumored?
Will high-ranking generals and admirals resign in protest?
How will it affect the upcoming presidential election?
There are many other questions, a few answers and many unfortunate aspects to these questions.

So what's the big deal. The military hierachy are jumping for joy in the hopes of fighting another war. That's there job:To Kill. And to skim billions of dollars from the taxpayers paying for the war and defense contracts. The cowards in the Bush administration who never went to war won't hesitate to start another one. The people in America are too stupid to understand what is happening. The republican party is nothing but a cult. Bush is there leader as long as Cheney tells him what to do. So just sit back and watch the world blow up. It'll be one hell of a show. And let's not forget the Supreme court assholes that put this psychopath into office. Americans better stand up to this lunacy. When the Federal government overrides the vote of the people(medical pot, for example) then it's time to stand up fight this tyranny from this fascist government. But i'm afraid it's too late. We done screwed ourselves when Bush was selected to be president. It's all over now.
Canuckchuck says:
"I hear that Hillary has already voted to invade…."
She voted to designate the Iranian military as a terrorist organization. No math to do here.
Stop screaming at each other and start screaming at your Senators and Congressmen to stop this. Sen. Bernie Sanders said on the Thom Hartmann show yesterday that he had introduced a bill in the Senate that would not allow the Bushies to attack without authorization from Congress. And while you are at it send the article "Is An Attack on Iran Imminent?" to everyone you know and urge them to take action too!
GOOD LUCK:
good posting, it would get the whole country talking and I could see FOX going ape shit at democracy breaking out in America. It reminds me of that movie The Day the Earth Stood Still. A very peaceful thing that hurts no one and gets everyones attention. Now lets hope just one person starts it and we maybe have change.
The republican party truly does need to have their license to operate pulled. They've proven themselves to be an actual danger to the US, both at home and abroad.
Time to get as many people as you can and rent the front page of your local paper and say this to the elected official.
YOUR JOB IS ON THE LINE UNLESS YOU START TO LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED YOU IN.
It is called DEMOCRACY folks so start to use it. It is 100% peaceful and I am sure asking the person you voted in to represent you is NOT against the law.
Have you noticed the AMERICAN PEOPLE are not running the show anymore? Polls don't mean a thing to this GOV. 60+% say get out , stop the war, don't attack Iran but no one in the WH is even listening.
I have no problem of going back to South America. Oh boy.... The smart ones are going to be like the people fleeing Germany when that other nut did the same thing!!!! Good bye United Police State of America.
If we end up in a fight with the Iranians, it should not be because some piss-ant, trigger-happy, civilian, merchant-mariners tried to play tough-guy with the Revolutionary Guard in their own front yard (think: "Blackwater Crackers-hanging-from-a bridge-in-Fallujah redux"). Ya, ya, we could invade Iran, and then what? We currently cannot defeat a crowd of RPG-toting Iraqi teenagers in flip flops, and we are going to somehow suppress the Iranians? If anybody wants to know how badly the Iranians could hurt the U.S. Navy (and cracker merchant-mariners) "Google" the words "Sunburn/Moskit missile", and see what they have waiting to stuff up our asses if we get too close. For example:
"The 3M82 "Mosquito" missiles have the fastest flying speed among all antiship missiles in today's world. It reaches Mach 3 at a high altitude and its maximum low-altitude speed is M2.2, triple the speed of the American Harpoon. The missile takes only 2 minutes to cover its full range and manufacturers state that 1-2 missiles could incapacitate a destroyer while 1-5 missiles could sink a 20000 ton merchantman. An extended range missile, 9M80E is now available".
Got that? And the frickin' thing flies nine feet above the water. Now, nobody says that the Iranians would win a war against us, but by the same token, based on current results nobody should be betting on us winning a war against them either. The only thing that is for certain is that we will kill a lot of their people, and they will kill a lot of our young people before anybody figures out how ugly it really will be.
what, no shaky shoddy grainy film this time?
next Bushco may use the 17 foot long unmanned Hammerhead target drone boat built in Nova Scotia as a false flag to start this Iran war.

Mr. Lieb was asking if there isn't someone who can lead us? Yes, there are plenty of people who could lead us out of this mess and correct the recessionary trend. But there isn't anyone with those talents who will step forward and be subject to the slander, slurs, accusations and downright vicious and dangerous tendencies that await him or her.
Can you blame these people? Have any of you read the latest by Lee Iaccoca? I believe seventy million of us would vote for him in ten seconds, but he knows a lot better than to put his head in that noose.
As Pogo said: We have met the enemy and he is us.
Also, a couple of you have questioned the Navy's involvement in the Maritime Service. This goes back at least to WWII, when cargo vessels, manned by Merchant Seamen who braved extreme dangers day after day, delivered the goods. You don't need to knock this situation.
The voices of our leaders are silent. America is being consumed by evil.
One is plenty ~NAM~. We see him there in the first article.____ "Hey guys, ___ watch this frog blow up!" "Heee heee yup, yup, yup, looka that mees".

Exactly where did you hear that lie Canuck? Why continue to spread it?
An civilian Iranian ship operating a mile or so off its own coast is shot at by a US Military vessel operating 10,000 miles from ITS own coast.
Who is the pirate here?
ARGG Chimpy!
Just because America has the world's largest stock of weapons of mass destruction and a mighty military doesn't mean it's OK to go around starting unnecessary wars. Any 3rd grader can figure that moral lesson out.
I would hope that Sec. Gates ,the joint chiefs, and the three branch high command realise that they can't initiate another conflict now.The services and guard are streatched thin ,stop gap second and third tour veterans need down time .There is no way the Republican would advocate for a draft in an election year!If you look at Iranian demographics the numbers must scare the shit out of Pentagon planners.Millions of young people available for a standing army, and sure to be energised by any U.S. provocations. No way the U.S. or Israel would risk tactical nuclear weapons for fear of retaliation by Russia or China. The Iranians could respond with conventional bombardment of the Green zone ,closing the straights, naval assaults, the U.S. embasy, the four mega bases under construction ,Kuwait, Dubai, U.A.E.or even Saudi pipelines ,and launch attacks against Israel. They could stop all middle east oil from moving.
It is more likely that the spin machine in the election runup is trying to ratchet up the tension.Look for an October surprise, and dragging out of every O.B.L. press piece they can find or fabricate and an escallation of real terror attacks, meant to effect change of the electoral mood.
Remember also that the Republicans and the neo-cons have been the best thing to happen to Al Quida since they were created by the C.I.A., as a way to use the Mujahadeen after the Soviets left Afghanistan.
If "bitter hicks" like me know this ,I hope that Millitary Intelegence would also............oh !@#$ %* $%^&*!()nevermind! peas in
I hear that Hillary has already voted to invade....
Bush is trying to add to his legacy. Nothing like starting another war to influence an election. It would be unpatriotic to change course (regimes) in the middle of a war. Let's have a hundred more years of war in Iraq. It certainly justifies permanent bases in Iraq when we need them to fly missions over Iran. Think what the Bushits might do next and then accuse them of it before they do it; that will make it harder for them to actually do it. We need a president who will turn these bastards over to an international court for war crimes and crimes against humanity. It was the Americans who pushed for the Geneva Convention and now it's the Americans who are violating it.
It makes no sense for our government to publicise such an incident, even if it did occur. If small boats did aproach one of our contract or a navy ship and they didn't reply to radio transmissions, after the Cole incident, it would be appropriate for the ship's captain to order warning shots fired.
However, that said. It would also be apropriate to advertise such an incident, IF we desired to have a "Gulf of Tonkin" incident at some time in the future and our astute president then go on national news and state, "This has been occurring and now Iran has sucessfully attacked and heavily damaged a ship flying the American flag." ___ Bombs away ___ and the American public would by the most tend to buy the propaganda. ___ They always do. I mean, would our president lie to us???
" ...further destabilize the world, jack up oil prices and lead to reinstatement of the draft in the U.S."
I'm sure the author looks at all three as downside . I'm not sure about the first one but the second one would weaken the US economy and military which is a good thing but the last one is the winner . Nothing , repeat nothing would end the occupation-in-Iraq faster than a reinstatement of selective military service instead of the dumb-ass volunteer service and I would say that was the best result .
BTW the term , volunteer service , is grossly misleading . The term should be service by those who would otherwise starve , sleep under an overpass... ( you fill in your own reason )

namase,
Is this photo from an article we should be reading? If so, please share the site with us. Thanks!
This whole thing is almost beyond belief. If the US attack Iran, than Iran will retaliate, with more power than Iraq. US ships will be lost, and many US servicemen killed, probably thousands in a short space of time. There will be no land war to speak of, because of the terrain in Iran.
If the US uses nuclear battlefield weapons, then the fallout will affect the whole of the Middle East.
If hundreds of thousands of Iranians are killed, then you have the problem of other Arab states joining in.
If the US controls the oil, then you will have no allies left in the World.
This is how I see the situation.
The US government lies down to even the tiniest details. We really are governed by louts.
Any boat that come within range will be blown out of the water. We will NOT have a repeat of the USS Kole disaster that Bush refused to investigate.
I don't know who these trigger happy contractors fired upon but whoever it was just gained the right to shoot back. Actually the USS Westward Venture is now an armed combatant and is subject to attack and sinking anywhere, anytime.
I think Yap is right again.
Israel and even the Zionists are not suicidal and they know that any nuke fallout from Iran will blow their way too.
It is the Bush Gang that acts suicidal now... they care only for their own safety from their crimes and only McCain and the Clintons are experienced in securing that.
It is Condi Rice who is giving orders now to Israel not to talk peace with Syria.
Oh and when the USA starts stiffing the international Bankers on our Debt, that is when the economy totally collapses like the Twin Towers.
China is investing all over the planet, insuring new friends and customers while the US is borrowing all over the planet and is bankrupt with a shrinking dollar and nothing good on the horizon.
The truth should hurt if you are paying attention.
The Socialist and mixed economy countries can face the future, can the USA?
The USA doesn't take orders from anyone but the interests of the International War Economy
Yap says:
" Start another war. I just don't believe it."
Not to worry, when Israel gives the orders, the war criminals in the US administration will create, or, manufacture a scheme to attack.
Yap.chongyee
Sure thing, as soon as you all hand over another couple of trillion dollars. Oh, do I need to tell you that we will NEVER be paying you back? hahahaha
What's wrong with the USA ? You have everything that is going for you NOT TO START ANOTHER WAR and there you go again ! Start another war. I just don't believe it. I know the Iranians will toast the USA. I suppose let's enjoy the show.

Frank Lieb,
Progressives here can't agree on even weather to vote or who to vote for president. Now, a leader?
What do you mean by leader? a self declared one? an elected one? elected by who? and with what authority?
If your question is rhetorical, I get it but it is still a good question.
At this point we are all leaders and have to make up our own minds and do what we gotta do.
We keep learning here, but making decisions is up to you and maybe that is the best we all can do.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the breaking story of the Israeli spy case from last week. And how will this incident affect africom, the militarization of Africa by the US government. Scary stuff using the Military Sealift command to start wars. Last I recall, these vessels are run by civilian unionized crews.

Does anyone remember N.Africa in W.W.2, when Gen. Montgomery stretched the Germen supply lines and then attacked and defeated Rommel? And so it goes!!!!!
It's almost time to sit down, put your head between your lega and kiss your a___ goodbye!!!!
You should be screaming at your congressmen and senators (in writing) to start impeachment against Bush and Cheney to forestall an attack that will further destabilize the world, jack up oil prices and lead to reinstatement of the draft in the U.S.
Some dangerous game going on here. Good thing Iran quickly got a denial out, forestalling a "Gulf of Tonkin"-style incident. It still seems the US is bent on creating impressions that "something is going on" demanding a need for action.
We can only hope and scream that US belligerence toward Iran is halted.
