In Love and Hope for a Peaceful World

by Cindy Sheehan

One of the aspects of being the “Peace Mom” and an internationally known figure working for peace that is cool is that I have been able to meet so many of my personal heroes. I have met Senator Ted Kennedy whose family has always tried to serve this country, although they don’t have to and their family has paid a high price for this service. As in all large, human families, they have had problems and their share of Black Sheep…but look at the background of the President! Senator Kennedy’s office is like an American History museum and my heart aches for his mother, Rose, who buried too many of her children.I have met and become good friends and a close colleague of Daniel Ellsberg, who was making major history when I was a senior in high school and we watched the Watergate hearings in my government class every day.

I have met entertainment giants like Willie Nelson and have become close friends with his family. I have always admired Michael Moore and am stunned sometimes that I have his cell phone number. Jackson Browne has been my not-so-secret crush and I have always resonated with his music (since I was about 10 years old). Now I have had the chance to be onstage and in marches with Jackson and his sweet partner, Diana, who lets me pretend that Jackson is my boyfriend when we are together. (LOL) Not only are the people I have met really talented and brave, but they have been lifelong peace and justice activists. A list of the people I have met and have spent significant time with is too long and I really feel honored!

One person that I have been able to form a relationship with is Yoko Ono Lennon. Since my son was killed, my life has paralleled Yoko’s in the way that we are both using our grief to continue the work of our violently murdered loved ones. But, Yoko has such an enormous stature in her work for peace that I am truly starry-eyed when I get emails and gifts from my peace-sister, Yoko.

John Lennon and The Beatles have been in my life since I was six and I watched them for the first time on the Ed Sullivan Show. Paul was my favorite, but John and his music have come to mean so much to me. The Beatles went from singing “Yeah, yeah, yeah,” to singing about War Piggies and Revolution.

Now, I have written on Imagining Peace and Power to the People so much, I feel that I know John.0421 06

This picture is hanging on my office wall and it is in a Peace calendar that Yoko sent me for Christmas. I think it is a very sweet picture of John and Yoko. Yoko sent me a message saying, “It is John saying ‘hello’ to you and everyone else.”

So “hello” from Yoko and John Ono Lennon.

In love and hope for a peaceful world,

Cindy

Having met the good Lady Cindy on 3 separate occassions and personally experiencing her warmth and humanity, all I can wonder
is why do all our heroes get killed and why do all the slimeballs
    on the right seemingly prosper?
There is no justice in this world…

  2. Earthian April 21st, 2008 10:50 am

Cindy is a national progressive treasure. Let’s help her win a place in Congress to express our voices. And unseat Pelosi and her complicity with Bush’s war crimes.

Watch out Warrior973 or you will be demonized as another left wing, conspiracy, nut case by the righties.

In my few brushes with the rich and famous I learned that they too put their shoes on one at a time.

Please, Cindy, don’t be co-opted by meeting celebs. Please don’t become addicted to the cult of personality. You have a well-earned opportunity to affect a positive change in our country. Don’t trade that for a chance to rub shoulders with mere mortals.

I know you are better than that.

  6. vmulier April 21st, 2008 1:37 pm

Oh for heavens sake, of course Cindy is better than that. Look at the people she mentions. Not one of them is the type to get drunk on celebrity. They’re all down-to-earth folks with hearts of gold. And so is Cindy.

  7. NMBill April 21st, 2008 1:42 pm

The music did so much to change people’s thnking, I don’t hear that today!

On the other hand, we never got it right. These people have been sending their message almost 40 years and people still don’t get it.

What’s it going to take to get people engaged? Damn this is a slow process; but we have to get it right this time!

I feel good about myself and you should too. It’s a long long push for those who fight for peace and justice. I couldn’t live with myself any other way!

  8. OMiller April 21st, 2008 2:46 pm

These were all people who could have gained a lot by staying on the sidelines of history, yet consciously chose to fight for others.

    Thank you.

  9. elmysterio April 21st, 2008 2:48 pm

“why do all our heroes get killed and why do all the slimeballs
    on the right seemingly prosper?”

Our heroes get killed because they are a threat to the establishment… to the moneyed class’s power. As soon as someone becomes a legitamate threat to the status quo, chances are they’ll be murdered by some ‘lone gunman’ or ‘crazed fan’.

Why to the slimeballs prosper? Because they’ll to ANYTHING to prosper… they’ll lie, cheat, steal, murder, rape, pillage, intimidate, extort, blackmail, etc… to get what they want. Normal morals and codes of conduct do not apply.

  10. elmysterio April 21st, 2008 2:49 pm

Nice Article today Cindy… good to see something light and positive today instead of your usual rage-soaked tirades. heh. Keep up the good work!

Cindy Sheehan is like many of the great women in history like Helen Keller, Susan B Anthony, Harriet Tubman and many others. Special place in heaven for you, Cindy!

    C I N D Y __ i s __ G R E AT

Here’s my HOPEFUL message of LOVE and understanding (re-posted from elsewhere on CD)

    ¿ Perhaps the _B E_’ i n g n e s s_ of America is the hidden iceberg’s _M A S S_, which we all to easily _M I S S_ , while seeing the merely shinny superficial surface of greed & materialism ?

¿ How do we measure the ineffably silent HEART of Americana ?

¿ Does Americana torture & terrorize the world, or a is it just few dead-hearted psychopaths ?

    ¿ Is not _H U M A N K I N D_ innately _G O O D_ ?

In a way the first question was unanswerable, as ineffable is literally w/o form or description, as it is the un-manifest destiny, that the other emerges from.

Please do consider discounting the apparent heart
    (really the _M I N D_ )

    from the innate HEART,

    for that is confusing the expression of _T H I N K ‘ i n g from that of our profoundness and underlying _B E I N G_

I appreciate your taking of Americana’s pulse, but again caution you that what you probed was perhaps merely the thoughts - and not the heart - as that s where we ALL hold dearly our closest and fondest loves and hopes.

I believe that American’s DO NOT discriminate from their HEARTs, but from their superficial thinking and programed propaganda, as we are far better than that (as per the 3rd question).

Please do consider that the sickest “heartless” psychopaths are TOTALLY needing to be isolated from society, for their THINKING is intrinsically twisted and possibly never recoverable — but regardless, deep deep down there still is humanness (suppressed by heavy layers of violent abuse and shame, and patterns of becoming abusers, … ).

( follow hyper link above left )

    N a m a s t e __ m e a n s _ that I stand in glowing acknowledgement of that LIGHT of God that lives and emanates within and w/o you - as you do the same for me.

It is far more “personal” than a mere handshake, as the “touch” is to one’s (inner) BEING’ness,

as contrasted by to one’s body parts (and … THINKING, hey I don’t have weapon in this hand [ and I’m not so sinister (meaning left-handed) to hide a weapon ] ).

And the point of Sheehan’s letter is….. what? Cindy runs out of things to say way before she stops talking.

As a self-annointed “internationally known figure working for peace” Cindy should have something more substantive to say. Is she getting to the point now that she has to pat herself on the back?

I realize Cindy has been through Hell. But so have a lot of other people. The level of self indulgence her letter indicates is just annoying.

  14. blessthebeasts April 21st, 2008 3:31 pm

Cindy writes “substantive” articles all the time. Check out her website Cindyforcongress.org.
This letter, I’m sure, was meant to lift our spirits, which can get pretty low in these depressing times. Thank you Cindy.

I can relate Cindy. Love what Yoko said about, “It is John saying ‘hello’ to you and everyone else.”

I saw John Lennon and he looked just like that. We stared at each other for (what seemed like) a few minutes and then he continued to meditate on the Grand Canyon. I was covered in red soil and I was 16. I had just hiked up from the bottom of the canyon and was watching the sunset. We both didnt see each other really until we both realized we were alone. That was one year before he died. I will always share that moment, meditation with John. Thanks for sharing Cindy.

    Peace

Hang in there Cindy. I’m glad you are impressed with the company you are keeping. Make sure the people you meet remember why.

Pay no mind to critics — most of them have nothing else to say; and nothing positive to add.

You had better be looking around for someone really competent to watch your back.

There is a reason for the war in Iraq, not all the lies and distortions that have gotten people to support it but still a reason. Addressing the real reason is the solution, does anyone really know why G.W. and D.C. made up this war? The lies and propaganda are an entirely seperate issue, that is the power to decieve people and you now see that power for what it is. Now what is the solution?????????????????????????

  20. Treefrog April 21st, 2008 5:40 pm

Cindy, you have your own thunder, it is what you know is what you have to offer the people.

Hey, whatever happened to Medea Benjamin’s Code Pink trip to Miami to protest the terrorist Luis Posada Carilles? There was a big whoop-tee-do article a couple months back about them planning to go to Miami but I haven’t heard anything since.

  22. Little Brother April 21st, 2008 6:26 pm

Cindy, I’m confident that during your public life you’ve gotten good at dodging the flung heels of mean-spirited jackasses. ‘Nuff said. ;)

In my view, you’ve more than paid your dues by laying your head in the wingnut lion’s mouth– everything from being dissed by politicians to manhandled by police to hassled by wingnut low-brows. And you’ve often written about profound, portentous, and tragic issues. So I find this pleasant and heartfelt dispatch to be a refreshing and delightful break from the horror.

And as long as we’re being gratuitously self-indulgent, we seem to have a common background. I watched The Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan on a black & white TV at my grandparents’ house, where we usually ate Sunday dinner.

I liked them from the beginning! But I was a little confused. I still remember turning to my older brother and sister (I am the Little Brother, remember) and saying, “So these guys are brothers, right? And their last name is ‘Beatle’?” Well, after all, to my child’s eyes they all looked alike!

And of course my siblings laughed at me. But now that almost a half-century has passed, I’m thinking of forgiving them. And I have you to thank. ;) — Go, Cindy! ♥

Namaste: on the other Cindy article (with the photo) I replied to your reply on my reply. You have to scroll down to where it says “more.”

David Grayling: Hang in there, sir. Slowly, but surely, more and more folks are coming around to our side. You and Cindy have made gigantic contributions for peace and justice and please don’t sell yourself short.

    Ezeflyer: Amen to that!

  29. Doom n Gloom April 21st, 2008 11:13 pm

I guess I’m a little out of the loop here. Cindy is running for Pelosi’s seat right? Then who is Shirley Golub? Is she not also running for Pelosi’s seat. Clearly I will support Cindy but I’m wondering who Shirley is? Can someone help me out?

  30. peaceman April 21st, 2008 11:22 pm

Doom n Gloom: Shirley Golub is another progressive woman running against Pelosi. As in presidential races, congressional candidates within the same political parties vie for the nomination.

  31. Doom n Gloom April 21st, 2008 11:51 pm

Thanks Peaceman I was not clear about that. I guess I’m a little skeptical about Shirley Golub’s motivations. Why would any progressive choose to run against Cindy? Doesn’t make sense to me. Smells fishy… Support Cindy!

  32. peaceman April 22nd, 2008 1:40 am

Doom n Gloom: You’re welcome. Its really not fishy. Maybe four of us (the number is arbitrary) want to run for a particular position. We believe ourselves to best represent whatever the position is. So the competition begins with, say four progressives (or if they were republicans-four reactionaries) trying to convince those constituents how their ideas or solutions are better than what the other candidates offer.

I’ve heard Shirley on the radio. She’s a good woman too. My thoughts are going out to Cindy. The woman has courage and integrity and seems willing to go the distance.

  33. Doom n Gloom April 22nd, 2008 5:27 am

I’m sorry Peaceman but my mind says something is fishey. Why would Shirley not get behind Cindy and support her? I’m thinking that there is a hidden agenda behind Shirley. Is AIPAC involved? Cindy is a peacemaker and it wouldn’t surprise me if AIPAC attempted to derail her. I can’t say for sure yet what the dynamics are but something is not right.

“And the point of Sheehan’s letter is….. what? Cindy runs out of things to say way before she stops talking.”

At least this article is a momentary respite from the hurling of vindicatives at those who are Cindy’s common humanity - perhaps Cindy is about to have a “Mecca moment” like Malcolm X - wouldn’t that be a welcome transformation for the world?

Wouldn’t it be grand for all of us to have a Mecca or Jerusalem moment, and wouldn’t the process of impeachment nurture such an instance?
And wouldn’t impeachment help “America be true to what it says on paper” as Martin Luther King Jr. extolled the last night of his life in Earth?
And wouldn’t impeachment be part of the “cleansing” Robert F. Kennedy spoke of in his speech of April 5th, 1968?:

On The Mindless Menace Of Violence

(edited for gender and ethnic inclusiveness)

It is not a day for politics, I save this one opportunity, my only event of today, to speak briefly to you about the mindless menace of violence in America which again stains our land and everyone of our lives.

It is not the concern of any one race. The victims of the violence are black, (brown) and white, rich and poor, young and old, famous and unknown. They are most important of all human beings, loving human beings, loved and needed.

No one, no matter where they live, or what they do, can be certain who next will suffer from some senseless act of blood shed. And yet it goes on and on and on in this country of ours.

Why? What has violence ever accomplished? What has it ever created?

When ever any American’s life is taken by another American unnecessarily, whether it is done in the name of the law or in defiance to the law, by one person or by a gang, in cold blood or in passion, in an attack of violence or in a response to violence, whenever we tear at the fabric of our lives, which another human has painfully and clumsily woven for themselves, and their children, when ever we do this the whole Nation is degraded.

Yet we seemingly tolerate the raising level of violence that ignores our common humanity and our claims to civilization a like. Too often we honor swagger and bluster and the wielders of force. Too often we excuse those who are willing to build their own lives from the shattered dreams of other human beings.

But this much is clear: violence breeds violence, repression breeds retaliation, and only a cleansing of our whole society can remove this sickness from our souls.

But when you teach a person to hate, and to fear their brothers and sisters, when you teach that they are a lesser person because of their color or their beliefs of the policies they pursue; when you teach that those who differ from you threaten your freedom or your job or your family, and you also learn to confront others, not as common Citizens but as enemies to be met, not with cooperation but with conquest, to be subjugated and to be mastered, we learn at the last to look at our sisters and brothers as aliens - aliens with whom we share a city but not a community, bound to us in common wealth but not a common effort, we learn to share only a common fear, only a common desire to retreat from each other, only a common impulse to meet disagreement with force.

Our lives on this planet are too short, the work to be done to great to let this spirit flourish any longer in this land of ours. Of course we can not banish this with a program nor with a resolution, but we can perhaps remember, if only for a time, that those who live with us are our brothers and sisters; that they share with us the same short moment of life; that they seek, as do we, nothing but the chance to live out their lives in purpose and happiness, winning what satisfaction and fulfillment that they can.

Surely this bond of common fate, surely this bond of common goals can begin to teach us something. Surely we can learn in the least to look around at those of us, our common humanity, and surely we can begin to work a little harder to bind up the wounds among us, and to become in our hearts: sister and brothers and common Citizens once again.

    —-

For impeachment, not with vegence and hate, but justice and love; not to show who is right, but to display what is the best of our common humanity - Love.

  35. peaceman April 22nd, 2008 8:20 am

Doom n Gloom: You may be on to something, but I can’t judge Shirley because I don’t know hardly anything about her except the one time I heard her on the radio. If AIPAC is involved, watch out. They have mastered the art of deception and manipulation and when new members come to Congress, they are warned about the consequences if they don’t support the Israeli agenda. The ‘New Yorker’ had a solid article about it over a year ago.

Still, I stand by what I said about competitive posturing among various candidates. Time will tell.

Puck Twain: I like your commentary very much.

  36. Siouxrose April 22nd, 2008 8:34 am

PUCK TWAIH: Inspired post. Thank you.

  37. wiredwilly April 22nd, 2008 8:40 am

Not to be cynical, but big deal. Going on about hope, peace, and love is a self indulgent waste of time. I went to Naropa Institute for years. I knew Allen Ginsberg, Yoko Ono, Jerry Garcia, William Burroughs , Jan Kerouac, John Steinbeck Jr, Daniel Ellsberg , Ram Das, Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey. So what. The Viet Nam War is over and the World is still screwed up. If talking about Love helped Jesus would have stopped War thousands of years ago. Notice that there has been nothing but one Global conflict after another since 1913 when the Federal Reserve Bank was created ? Going to YouTube and watching the Aaron Russo Video interview titled ” Nick Rockefeller reveals 9/11 FRAUD to Aaron Russo ” and making THAT story a major issue would help, but everyone would rather blather on about peace, love, and pay more attention to fame than substance. People ignore the actual problem, which is MONEY and the BANKERS because economics is too complicated and not sexy enough for the masses. Politicians are the effect not the cause. MONEY is the cause. The Bush family was apparently originally put into power by Nazis who infiltrated the World Banking system, specifically Eugene Meyer and John McCloy. When people demand an end to Central Banking and Congress seriously investigates the possibility that it was Rockefeller and the Central Bankers who were behind 9/11 and the Iraq War, THEN peace might be possible. I won’t hold my breath. Thomas Jefferson was a great American. He didn’t get rid of King George by singing with Yoko Ono. He did it by challenging the premise of a Central Bank.

  38. Doom n Gloom April 22nd, 2008 10:45 am

    Nicely said Puck Twain.

Peaceman, I believe that Cindy’s election will be a significant turning point and a rejection of the politics of inaction evidenced by Nancy Pelosi. Cindy’s defeat would signal the death of the politics of peace. In my mind it’s that important.

  39. Little Brother April 22nd, 2008 11:26 am

A “self indulgent waste of time” is in the eye of the beholder. Just sayin’.

  40. sLiMsHaDy April 22nd, 2008 11:45 am

Best wishes to you, Cindy Sheehan! I sure do hope that the electorate in your SF Bay area do their job and terminate the political career of the pelosi-crone!

  41. wiredwilly April 22nd, 2008 1:55 pm

This is why Hippies are a memory and Neocons are in power. Love & light. Namaste. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Wonderful. Big Group Hug. Here’s some news : EVERYONE is for peace & love. However, it’s like a guy standing in front of his burning house hugging his wife when what he SHOULD be doing is getting the fire department. I heard Ms Sheehan at the Fighting Bob Festival in Wisconsin and read her book. Based on that , I think she’s a good hearted, well intentioned woman. She also doesn’t have a clue about what’s REALLY going on. She would certainly be a vast improvement over Pelosi and I support her efforts. However, to understand 9/11 and the Iraq War, you need to understand the History of the Federal Reserve Banks. People bought into the NeoCon version of 9/11 events hook, line, and sinker. Talk about Bin Laden. Talk about Saddam Huessin. Talk about Michael Moore. Talk about Bush. Talk about Clinton and Obama. Talk about ANYTHING but the MONEY and the Corporate executives that stood to gain from the destruction of the World Trade Centers. I believe there is as much probability 9/11 was devised in a Corporate board room in New York City as there is that it was devised in a cave in Afghanistan. Still not a word on Commondreams about Aaron Russo’s interview concerning Nick Rockefeller. THAT is the key to the finding a solution. Everything else is twaddle.

wiredwilly — If you haven’t noticed,

ALL of the (energy) POWER on Earth comes to us via Stars and LIGHT (or was stored chemically from such),

    so it’s hardly _ t w a d d l e _,
    __ because w/o it you’d be frozen __
    inside a river with no _ p a d d l e _

You haven’t reached a point where it matters to you, but the forces that create galaxies are hardly tame, nor is PEACE.

I’ve no doubt that your dumping on me must make you machismo-matic feel better, and that’s EXACTly where you need to be, so enjoy the ride, it’s perfect for you.

Perhaps it isn’t clear, but what I hear from you is the BANKER’s own tune, just twisted a bit around. If you ever want off the treadmill, just reflect that you are really (in some ways) just like Dorothy — you really do have it inside you (all of the time).

    Best wishes !

We cannot all be a beckon of light, like the moon some reflect that light. We make mistakes and learn from them, we learn from other people’s mistakes. We learn to see the barriers and learn to walk around them. There is some truth to what wiredwilly said, coming together in song is only a beginning it is not the entire answer…

Thank you Tree Frog — Yes, of course, there’s room for ALL of us. And more than enough “opportunities” to grow and continue to learn.

It’s part of my failing(s) to be susceptible to being painted by the brush of guilt and blame, and surely I could be more accepting of people’s differences. I guess (deep down) I suspected that the “rainbow” backed picture was a bit much of the 60s_ishness and I still went ahead and posted it, perhaps hoping for more openness and understanding than these times can easily provide.

And I can only “hear” the banker’s tune, because part of it lives in me as well.

We need to seek alliances and focus on observing commonalities (as the reverse costs us in effectiveness and harmony).

I like what you posted, in fact, your generosity amazes me at times. I think it is good to have a touch stone (i like to call it rock medicine) a rainbow…

The very first time I ever got any attention at grammar school is when I danced to “Ticket to Ride”.

I too feel as though I know John. Actually, this is something that has always troubled me. On the night John was killed I witnessed it in a dream. I remember waking up from the dream terrified. That morning I had to drive my husband to my brother-in-law’s house. I was still pretty shaken up after I got to his house. Instead of just leaving I went in and shared the dream with my sister-in-law. Then we turned on the radio and when we heard the news both of us just looked at each other in sadness and disbelief. I have always wondered why I had that experience. I often asked myself, what was the connection?

I can empathize with both Cindy and Yoko. I too have suffered losing a loved one. It takes a great deal of strength and courage to keep on keeping on. Even though I can still feel his presense in my life, its just not the same. During the years, I have also experienced John’s presense in my life and the message is always the same, it is the importance of knowing and living personal “peace”.

Cindy for heavens sakes what’s happening to your campaign to unseat Bush co-conspirator Nancy Pelosi?

It’s nice to hear about the celebrities’ cell phone numbers you have, but I want to know what your plans are to wipe Democrats off the electoral map.

I am repeating something wrote regarding an article on how we are ramping up to bomb Iran. Sorry that I am not speaking in the loving and peaceful tone of this article. But I really want to threaten the collaborators who will allow the people of Iran to be bombed for no reason. One way is to elect Cindy or at least have a darn good showing.

How about everyone who possibly can donate their STIMULUS check to Cindy’s campaign to unseat Pelosi? I would love to shave Pelosi’s hair off like the French did after WW II to prostitutes who consorted with the Nazis.

Of course, top priority is to get rid of those Nazis. But they couldn’t exist without massive complicity.

“Monsters exist. But they are too few in number to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are the functionaries ready to believe and to act without asking questions.” - Primo Levi

Cindy is a pure heart who is trying to make the world a better place. I wish her well even as I think it’s too late for our beloved country. Most people try to do right but some are too self-centered and we have only a limited understanding of how to get there. Some just don’t get it. In the final analysis, you can only understand the value of love and caring for others. If you don’t understand even that, may God help you.
