Russia Accuses US of Building 'New Berlin Wall'
MOSCOW - A senior Russian government minister accused the United States on Sunday of building a "new Berlin wall" with its plans for a missile defence system in Central Europe that have infuriated Moscow.
"They are trying to push us into knocking heads with Europe... in order to create a new dividing line, a new Berlin Wall," first deputy prime minister Sergei Ivanov said in an interview on state-run Rossiya television.
"It is obvious that continuing with the plans and carrying them out by placing rockets in Poland and radar in the Czech Republic will, of course, present an obvious threat to Russia."
Washington's plans for the missile shield, which it says is meant to protect against possible attacks from Iran or North Korea, have rocked already unsteady relations between Russia and the United States in recent months.
Russia has proposed creating a joint missile defence system with US and NATO participation as an alternative to Washington's current plan, but US officials have treated the proposal cautiously.
"We are proposing creating a unified missile defence system by 2020 for all participants, with equal access to the system's controls," Ivanov said.
He also said that Russia and the United States would hold talks on missile defence in September or October involving both ministers of defence, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Under the Bush regime there is no hope to move away from further arms escalation. We need a complete change of direction; away from militarism, and investment in peace before the whole world blows up.
Any parts of the missile defens - oops, forgot to add quotation marks - "missile defense shield" would be extremely vulnerable to conventional military attacks and sabotage. Each part would therefore require a fairly substantial military presence to protect it against ground and aerial attacks. That means bases; the whole "missile shield" element is just a justification for the expansion of US military forces throughout Eastern Europe. The Russians of course understand this perfectly well, which is more than can be said for a lot of the American populace who no doubt believe this is all about shooting down potential missile attacks from minor countries with super-duper, whiz bang toys. It would be hilarious to see Russia and China start deploying military assets around Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, etc if for no other reason than to see the US government, the military leadership and the media (especially the most reactionary elements) start snarling, foaming at the mouth, and flinging their poop in uncontrollable rage against such provocations.

Golly, I wonder why.
This criticism from Moscow is right, but the more crucial thing is that it's a case of W's gang using their old divide and rule plan by trying play off Moscow against Western Europe.
US trade policy has been militarized (as has the State Dept.). Small, poor countries who say "No" to a US military base or other presence on their land are called "uncooperative in the war on terror" and, I suppose, are denied the joy of an exploitive trade agreement.
Who knows what George Bush is promising Poland and the Czech Republic in exchange for allowing us to waste a few kabillion dollars in their back yards while making the world more dangerous.
You can show support for anti-missile citizens of those countries by signing The Prague Declaration that is "Made by participants in the International Conference Against the Militarization of Europe" (www.prague-declaration.org).
I think a better Russian idea for peace would be a methodology described in todays New York Times: The Russians "encourage" those who they consider to be irresponsible oligarcs to sell their holding.
If some enity does not adhere to environmental or health & safety codes, their enterprise, in it's entirety, runs the real risk of being shut down by the state. This has recently taken place at the world's largest nickel mine.
The beauty of this idea is any government responsible to it's people could do the same. Just imagine how soon toxic polluters of all kinds would start complying with existing laws. And if irresponsible corporations discovered they could make money on the clean-ups, it would be hard to stop them.
And the method could even be applied to governments, even our own. Handford, Washington might be a good place to start, the airforce could pick-up the waste, give it to NASA, who in turn would rocket it to Mars.
The US could enter into a friendly competition with the Russians, Ukrainians, or who ever with the one getting the most toxins to Mars each year, winning the Nobel Peace prize. The US might, initially, be at a slight disadvantage in the competition, because of that nasty melt down in the Ukrain, but don't forget the US has three mile island, the Nevada tests, and who knows what they haven't told us about.
Wasn't it posted recently that Boeing would be the "beneficiary" of Bush's largesse, in that it would get more than 300 million dollars in contracts to build this ever-increasing string of missile bases? And what did the Kaczynski brothers receive for selling out Poland? What did Kraus get for his portion of the Czech Republic?
The Bushites have privatized (read: SOLD)the entire United States, government, military, and citizenry, in order to line the pockets of the fattest of fat cats. They won't stop unless impeached, hanged, drawn, and quartered. HDQ?? Can we do that? Sure, isn't torture legal now?

I guess Bush has greater plans for conquering the world and if Iraq wasn't threatening to America, he now steps on Russia's toes. Is this stupidity or gall or both? Never in a million years would former Presidents have taken such a bold move. How would he like it if Russia decided to put nukes in Canada or Mexico. Bush is either mad with power or downright insane. I tremble until this nightmare of a President has been thrown out of office.
Shameless bunch..........
Please read the following article, complete with a link to text of Putin's press conference. The Russians are seriously afraid of a nuclear first strike capability disguised as a "defense".

"The Bush administration is maneuvering in a way that will allow it to achieve what Nuclear weapons specialist, Francis A. Boyle, calls the "longstanding US policy of nuclear first-strike against Russia".

I take comfort from these comments. Assuming that most of the contributors are American I am reassured by the knowledge that there are so many sane souls in the US.
From the beginning I could never understand why Iraq was not, instead of being sanctioned for ten years and then bombed into oblivion, given most favoured nation status. This would have enabled the rich to prosper and, quite probaly, get rid of Saddam themselves. Poking the country with a stick only angered everyone, even those aspiring to a modern way of life. Now a whole nation is wrecked and the best educated and most prosperous have fled: never was the region more unstable.
Despair permits holymen to do their worst, and this is the story of the east, and to some degree the whole world, today.
Ditto Iran. Why not open up economically to its idiot government and allow improving wealth to take care of a stupid theocracy?
As for Russia. It should have been invited into NATO as soon as Communisism collapsed. Yes, the oligarchic government is corrupt, but look at our westrern governments and how our own 'democracy' has evolved recently.
Russia has always been paranoid about its borders. Yes, it once helped partition Poland, yes, it has gobbled up swathes of the Ottoman provinces, and yes, it has conquered whole tracts of central Asia; but what empire hasn't behaved like this, including the US?
Now it wants to join in and westernise again, and we are treating it like an untrustworthy monster.
Often, when you treat someone badly you get bad behaviour in return. Nations are no different.
I think we are all stuffed by the way. Pity!
God doesn't need human help to end the world. It is unlikely that the activities of capitalists, corporatist, fascists, dictators and fools will end the world, but they make it impossible for the remaining to really enjoy much of a life.
God has shown little indication that he will protect us from the logical result of our own actions so these guys have to be stopped by us. The world is waiting for us to live up to SOME of our ideals. Impeachment and conviction by Congress is the best start on our road to sanity.
It would be delightful though if Shotgun Dick and Bu$h the inferior were swallowed by the earth, struck by lightning or some other biblical type of fate.
Nice shakker!! Very nice!! But like you said, I'm not holding my breath waiting for God to help us. A great analogy was posed to me once... prayer without works is no good. Try praying for a hot dog at dinner time and see if one comes to the door. However, nothing is preventing me from going out and getting the things I need to eat a hot dog prepared by me. Sooo.... let's stop waiting around for divine intervention and get your Congressperson to stop voting for their own raise long enough to impeach first Dick, the George, then Nancy for refusing to step up when women were finally given a real power position in this country - this is in effect treason or at least dereliction of duty. Sufficient enough to remove a Congresswoman, speaker of the House or not.
Am I the only one who finds it funny (ironic) that Putin would use an analogy to the Berlin Wall??
esp. since it was the Soviets own E. German proxy that put it up in the first place! probably with assistance, (monetary and engineering-wise), from that same USSR.
I'm surprised he would want to draw att'n to that dark era of his own country's past.
People have got to start understanding that Putin, Bush and all so-called leaders are simply puppets operated by the Rothschild banking Cabal. Until they are neutralized the only changes will be for the worst and all the evil on earth will just continue to escalate. Quote from madame Rothschild herself "if my sons didn't want wars, there would be no wars,".
