"Children in Oklahoma Need a Good Education More Than I Need a Tax Cut"

"Tax cuts for campaign donors cannot continue to be a higher priority than properly funding our schools."

Oklahoma City, OK

Today, in response to teachers across Kentucky and Oklahoma striking for higher wages and school funding, Morris Pearl, Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and former managing director at BlackRock, Inc., released the following statement:

"Our state and federal governments take money out of public schools and give it to corporations and millionaires, and then act surprised when students struggle. Tax cuts for campaign donors cannot continue to be a higher priority for our lawmakers than properly funding our schools. It's incredible seeing the teachers of Oklahoma and Kentucky standing up for themselves and the children they teach, and I hope that they will have the same success as their colleagues in West Virginia. Children in Oklahoma and Kentucky need a good education more than I need a tax cut, and it's far past time that our country's legislators realize that."

The Patriotic Millionaires is a group of high-net worth Americans who share a profound concern about the destabilizing level of inequality in America. Our work centers on the two things that matter most in a capitalist democracy: power and money. Our goal is to ensure that the country's political economy is structured to meet the needs of regular Americans, rather than just millionaires. We focus on three "first" principles: a highly progressive tax system, a livable minimum wage, and equal political representation for all citizens.
