Oakland, CA

Today, Gov. Jerry Brown signed SB 100 into law, which will move the state's electrical grid to 100% clean energy by no later than 2045.

Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org, gave the following statement in response:

"Good organizing pays off! So much credit is due to community groups around California that turned the fires and droughts and floods into fuel for significant climate action. While some are talking about climate solutions and green jobs, California leaders like Senator Kevin de Leon are making solutions real."

May Boeve, Executive Director of 350.org, gave the following statement in response:

"Local organizing made this moment possible. The movement for 100% clean energy began at the grassroots level. To see California, the world's 5th largest economy, commit to the 100% goal, is an historic moment and testament to the growing power of this movement.

"We still have work to do. We'll need to ensure that the transition to 100% clean energy is a just and equitable one that protects workers, and prioritizes the needs of the low-income and communities of color who have been the worst impacted by fossil fuels and climate change. We'll also continue to push Governor Brown and his successor to ban new fossil fuel projects and phase out existing production. Without that commitment, California will only be undermining its own goal of addressing the climate crisis."

Local 350 groups across California have been advocating for the state to move to 100% clean energy for years. 350.org supported the effort to pass SB100 with petitions, calls, and actions across the state. On Saturday, more than 30,000 people from across the state joined the "Rise for Climate, Jobs and Justice" march in San Francisco to call on Brown and elected officials to go fossil free and support a fast and fair transition to 100% renewable energy. The march was one of 900 events and rallies that took place in more than 80 countries around the world.

Over the next week of the Global Climate Action Summit, 350.org will be pushing governments, businesses and investors to stop new fossil fuel projects, end financing for dirty energy, and support a fair and fast transition to 100% renewable energy.

350 is building a future that's just, prosperous, equitable and safe from the effects of the climate crisis. We're an international movement of ordinary people working to end the age of fossil fuels and build a world of community-led renewable energy for all.
