Sarah’s Straight Talk
Truly, Sarah Palin has come a long way. When she ran for vice president, she frequently became disjointed and garbled when she departed from her prepared remarks. Now the prepared remarks are incoherent, too.
"And a problem in our country today is apathy," she said on Friday as she announced that she would resign as governor of Alaska at the end of the month. "It would be apathetic to just hunker down and ‘go with the flow.' Nah, only dead fish ‘go with the flow.' No. Productive, fulfilled people determine where to put their efforts, choosing to wisely utilize precious time ... to BUILD UP."
Basically, the point was that Palin is quitting as governor because she's not a quitter. Or a deceased salmon.
Sarah Barracuda made her big announcement Friday afternoon on the lawn of her home to an audience that appeared to include only Todd, the kids and the next-door neighbors. Smiling manically, she looked like a parody of the woman who knocked the Republicans dead at their convention. She babbled about her parents' refrigerator magnet, which apparently had a lot of wise advice. And she recalled her visit with the troops in Kosovo, whose dedication and determination inspired her to ... resign.
"Life is about choices!" declared the nation's most anti-choice politician.
People, what is going on with governors in this country? Are we doomed to see them go bonkers one by one, state by state?
The timing of Palin's announcement was extremely peculiar. Not only did she interrupt the plans of TV newscasters to spend the entire weekend pointing out that Michael Jackson is still dead, she delivered her big news just as the nation was settling into Fourth of July celebrations. You'd have thought she didn't want us to notice.
"I choose to work very hard on a path for fruitfulness and productivity," she said in a fairly typical moment. "I choose not to tear down and waste precious time, but to build up this state and our country, and her industrious, generous, patriotic free people!"
Palin has a year and a half left to go in her term of office. The political world had been wondering whether she'd run for re-election. The answer is no. And furthermore, it turns out that Palin believes that the only way her administration can "continue without interruption" is for her to end it.
Anyhow, no point in wasting precious time.
One underlying theme in Palin's remarks was that many ethics complaints have been filed against her on issues ranging from her alleged attempts to get her former brother-in-law fired from the state troopers to charging Alaska for her children's travel expenses.
According to the about-to-be-ex governor, fighting all this negativity has cost the state "thousands of hours of your time" and $2 million "to respond to ‘opposition research.' " But now this is all water under the bridge. Every single unfair charge has been dismissed. ("We've won!") And now that the battle is over and the time/money has been wasted, Palin is going to leave her job in the name of "efficiencies and effectiveness."
"I cannot stand here as your governor and allow millions upon millions of our dollars go to waste just so I can hold the title of governor," she said.
Perhaps there is some new and interesting scandal that Palin has yet to let us in on. (If so, I hope it involves a soul mate.) Otherwise, it would appear that this is all about her desire to start raising money and setting up operations for a presidential run in 2012. Her fans immediately interpreted the resignation as a canny move to get her back down to the lower 48, with as much time on her hands as Mitt Romney. (Mary Matalin called it "brilliant.")
Palin was the subject of a devastating article in this month's Vanity Fair by Todd Purdum, who wrote that McCain campaign aides found it almost impossible to get Palin to prepare for her disastrous interview with Katie Couric. And there is no sign, Purdum reported, that Palin has made any attempt to bone up on the issues so that next time around, she could run as a candidate who actually had some grasp of the intricacies of foreign and domestic policy.
So if she's starting to run, it will be as the same reporter-avoiding, generalization-spouting underachiever that she was last time around.
Now we know she not only doesn't have the concentration to read a policy paper, she can't focus long enough to finish the job she was hired to do.
On Friday, Palin said that finishing out her term would be just too easy. "Many just accept that lame-duck status, hit the road, draw the paycheck and ‘milk it.' I'm not putting Alaska through that," she said.
Apparently, she's going to put the rest of us through it instead.

Too bad you can't face the fact that she's unelectable to the presidency -- the 20-odd percent who 'just love her' aren't enough votes. In a contest with Obama in 2012 she might win the electoral votes of Alaska and a southern state or two and that's it -- landslide for Obama.
"Sarah Palin could accomplish more on her day off than you could accomplish in a year's worth of meaningless diatribe."
I agree, so let's make sure Palin never again works for any governmental agency in any capacity. That way she can live up to her full potential of accomplishment.

If the mayor of Memphis, Tennessee had resigned, would he have gotten this kind of press?
He actually governs more people than Palin.
This lady is the poster child for how truly pathetic the GOP has become. An 841 SAT, who needed 5 colleges to obtain a 4 year journalism degree. Didn't even know what "The Bush Doctrine" was. Couldn't name a Supreme Court case other than Roe v. Wade. Didn't even know everyday terms like "achilles heel". In her one debate, she completely ignored the debate format, instead she "spoke directly to the American people", by reciting mini-speeches taught to her at the McCain ranch. After watching Katie Couric take her to the woodshed, could you picture her across the bargaining table with Putin or Ahmadinejad?
She babbles incoherently to the point that late night comedians don't even have to write material, but simply repeat her statements to get big laughs.
Yet the GOP sees her as a viable candidate for leader of the free world?
Here's my guess: The same Creepy Corporate Cabal that got O-traitor into office told Palin "Get out or we will destroy you." They have something on her that is SO bad, she, a very tough cookie, just rolled over.
Matalin is part of the Creepy Corporate Cabal, and is going along with the program to, in exchange for the resignation, protect Palin, as long as Sarah does not try to further her political career.
This is how Obama and the CCC work, and this is the way it's been working at least since Bush cheated his way into office. Twice.
And, again, voting third party won't help ANYTHING. What are we going to do now that there's no denying the truth?
Palin is an attitude. Yesterday while riding a bike on the street, as glitterring spaceship from detroit almost side-swiped me, they don't like bicycles. On the back? For real. A shiny red white and blue McCain/Palin sticker, I could see it clearly through the exhaust smoke.
and you cannot rejoice that some are still buying from Detroit?
Wow! Action62 had some pent up anger heshe had to emote. I hope he/she feels better.
There are plenty of places to complain about Obama, but this story is about Palin. Comparing Obama to Palin is comparing apples to gooseberries.
So back to Palin - I think this women is mentally ill. Certainly dillusional. Don't mistake the few policy statements she has made as being representative of some deep belief in conservative ideals. She's proven to be as shallow as they come and willing to say or do about anything to stay in the public eye. A Narcissist. She is also a user. She uses ideas and people to further her one interest - herself.
Some would say - typical politician. But most politicians (despite a lot of scummy characteristics) at least display some intelligence and coherence about the issues of the day. Palin is a know nothing and makes no attempt to remedy that. She has nothing to offer in terms of intelligent policy ideas or governing. Her antics she got away with in Alaska have been easily exposed on a national stage, even now to Alaskans as well. She's proven that she can't handle being in the big leagues. Before or as soon as her shallowness, lack of intelligence, or out and out unethical or illegal behavior gets exposed, she quits and moves to something else - a pattern repeated through her career.
The sad thing is the media loves stories like this and will feed on it voraciously, falling right into Palin's hands. Here I am commenting on it, so I guess I am guilty as well. But I would not have a problem if she and all the stories just went away for good. Palin and her family would probably be better off if that happened too. However, we all know that isn't going to happen.
I am not a Sarah Palin fan.
One thing is for sure though---Sarah Palin would not sell out her conservative base the way the Democratic Party, Obama, Biden, Clinton and Rahm Emanuel have in their giving the BIG MIDDLE FINGER TO ALL THE PROGRESSIVE/LIBERALS who voted for Obama.
So, you can laugh at Sarah Palin but realize that she deeply believes in conservative ideals and would not sell-out her base, like Obama already has.
When are you liberals/progressives going to wake-up and realize Obama is out for political expediency and does not give a rat's ass about your issues?
Obama is not a liberal or progressive. Sarah Palin is a conservative. Palin cannot throw the b.s. around like Obama does. Palin is an easy target, but she is not a liar. And you all thought Obama was gonna be some "peace president" or deliver that healthcare reform. Stop being so dumb and/or gullible. Ya gotta love that new huge embassy Obama is building in Pakistan, for billions of dollars, as Americans die of cancer because they have no health insurance....Obama's healthcare plan equals euthansia.
Obama has continued and expanded the military-police-corporatist state of George W. Bush, albeit with smiles and nods and a happy face. Obama has just put a happy face on the military-police-corporatist state of Bush and you fake-phony iberals/progressives think "change" has arrived. If you think Obama is much different than Bush then you are as dumb as Sarah Palin is, or at least that is your charge here.
I am a leftist who joined the Green Party when Obama showed no spine by opening his arms to Joe Lieberman. Lieberman stood there and clapped his hands as Sarah Palin told crowd after crowd that "Obama consorts with terrorists," and Joe had a big smile on his face, clapping with his hands. The spineless Obama welcomed him back in rapid fashion and the spineless Democratic Party gave ole Joe a standing ovation in welcoming Traitor Joe Lieberman back into the fold. The Dems let Lieberman keep most of his committee positions as well. This showed that the Democratic Party has no principles or standards.
Lately, Joe Lieberman has come out against the public healthcare option as well. Well, Obama and the Democratic Psrty can have Lieberman and his ilk like Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, Blanche Lincoln, Evan Bayh, etc. The Democrats are full of BLue Dogs and Conservative Democrats controlled by the Republican-Lite Democrativ Leadership Council. The Democrats are disgusting in their support of big agribusinesses, the military-police-corporatist-torture-anti-Civil Liberties party. Obama has no spine at all, and he is merely an empty suit.
The Republicans make suck, but, the Democrats act like bent over fools!
Good Night!
@ActionJackson62 July 4th, 2009 8:33 pm: Uh, actually, Sarah Palin lied to the people of Wasilla when she had an unneeded $13-million sports arena constructed there when she was mayor by the same company for whom she had done TV ads, and who built her family home and vacation digs. Wasilla is still in debt from the overpriced project, while Palin's family relaxes in their Wasilla McMansion and their luxurious Lake Lucille vacation home, all built by her friends at Spenard Building Supplies. (She's currently under investigation for this misuse of public funds.)
http://thepoliticalcarnival.blogspot.com/2009/07/palin-update-indictment-pending.html
She also lied when she said she never abused her power as governor to get state employees fired for personal reasons. The various ethics investigations, testimony under oath, and her own emails show a different story.
She lied as well when she claimed she never misspent state funds on her family and then was forced to pay back the state of Alaska for unauthorized trips taken by her husband and children at the taxpayers' expense.
She lied again when she said she had never supported the infamous 'Bridge to Nowhere' -- in fact, she is on record endorsing the bridge until it became politically expedient to be against it.
If you'd like more examples of Palin's numerous deceptions and evasions, I'll be glad to provide them.
And if you think there is no difference between Barack Obama and Junior Bush, then I can only think you are genetically-related to Sarah Palin, since I doubt anyone else could be that egregiously dumb.
Or, you could be a GOP troll trying to 'divide and conquer' at a progressive website by pretending to be a progressive criticizing Obama. (Yes, we've heard about that new 'path to victory' by the Republicans. Thom Hartmann has devoted several hours to the subject on his radio show.) If so, you should be ashamed of yourself -- if you have any capacity for shame left.
RSJ,
The Obama administration has resorted to strong-arm tactics in pressuring the few progressive members of Congress who do not choose to carry out Obama's wishes or dictates when in disagreement. Sad that Obama now thinks like George W. Bush that he is a dictator. The duty of Congress is not to obey Obama's commands or demands. The strong-arm tactics of this Obama administration coerced some House Democrats who openly opposed the war supplemental spending bill, to reverse their vote, but, only after they received a talking to by the amoral-war crazed-Rahm Emanuel. Here is a news article on this matter:

When Will Media Cover Obama's Pro-War Hardball?
Norman Solomon
Jun 13, 2009
"As the saying goes, "politics ain't beanbag."
...In Washington, the pressures on legislators are intense — and the White House often has its way with Congress by ratcheting up the carrots and sticks. Any lawmaker who has low tolerance for coercion should probably look for another line of work....But what we need from journalism is open scrutiny of the dynamics of power. Reporters should shine a bright light on behind-the-scenes maneuvers that block congressional oversight of administration policies....Last Tuesday, when the House of Representatives approved a supplemental spending bill for more war in Iraq and Afghanistan, there must have been celebration at the White House. Days of intense arm-twisting paid off.....The Obama administration had brandished the weapon of retribution against the newest Democratic arrivals in the House. Most news coverage seemed oblivious, but not all. As the San Francisco Chronicle reported just hours before the war-funding measure came to the floor, "the White House has threatened to pull support from Democratic freshmen who vote no."....Several Democrats now in their first full terms refused to go back on antiwar positions. They went ahead and bravely voted no when it really counted. Those lawmakers included Donna Edwards (Md.), Eric Massa (N.Y.), Chellie Pingree (Maine), Jared Polis (Colo.) and Jackie Speier (Calif.). Second-term Democrats also voting no included Keith Ellison (Minn.), Carol Shea-Porter (N.H.) and Peter Welch (Vt.)....In sharp contrast, scores of longtime House members — spanning the country from Oregon's Peter DeFazio to New York's Maurice Hinchey — jumped on the war train and voted for the supplemental bill, despite the fact that they presented themselves as Iraq war opponents during the Bush administration....Threats, whether private or public, are part of the politics of Washington....Journalists expect strong-arm tactics to come from the White House and may actually view them as evidence of the effective use of presidential power...."
Norman Solomon is hardly a right-winger or fan of the Bush administration, but he like I, opposes the Imperial, Military-Police-Corporatist state of America, and Obama's continuation of Bush's war policies!
@ ActionJackson62: Jebas, you're not a little fanatical, are you?
I always find it ironic that those who accuse me or anyone else of being an 'Obamabot' who's 'drinking the Kool-Aid,' all seem to have imbibed something considerably stronger than Kool-Aid when it comes to their loathing of Obama and their thin-skinned inability to take criticism.
It's a shame you can't weather some disagreement without resorting to a babbling screed; you're a perfect example of why the Green Party isn't doing better -- too many fanatics who think they have all the pat answers, and are ready to tell you all about them -- endlessly.
Please educate yourself as to the way American politics and Washington work so that you won't make such a fool of yourself in the future. Obama is not the king, he doesn't run the Democratic Party, and he doesn't tell the House and Senate what to do, regardless of what you may believe. It's much more complex and confounding than that.
You might also reflect that your stance of ideological purity is very similar to that taken by some abolitionists when Lincoln took office. In 1861 they wanted him to proclaim the Civil War was solely about the abolition of slavery -- if Lincoln had done that, much of the Union Army, which was white, would have likely deserted or, at the least, lost the will to fight. There was plenty of racism in the North, even without slavery, so if Lincoln had ceded to the demands of the ardent abolitionists in 1861, the North would have likely lost the Civil War and slavery would have continued. Instead, Lincoln made the war about preserving the Union and Constitution, and waited until the North was winning to issue the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, two years after taking office. Lincoln took the long and realistic view, and not the short-sighted and foolish one; Lincoln was opposed to slavery, but he took the pragmatic approach to ridding the country of it. I'm simply saying I would not count Obama out after only six months in office, as you no doubt would have Lincoln had you been alive then.
BTW, I would be very happy to vote for a true progressive candidate, regardless of party, and have supported Ralph Nader in the past. In fact, I made the mistake of believing Ralph when he said in 2000 he was running to make the Greens a viable third party; he abandoned them shortly after the election. Unfortunately, the Green Party national candidates thus far have not had a chance of winning nor even making a substantial dent in the dominance of the two major parties, except to siphon off votes from Democratic presidential candidates. (It's the reason Republicans donated money to Ralph in 2004.) Here's a tip: The Greens should forget about the presidency and concentrate on local and state offices, changing state voting laws so that it's easier for third parties to get on the ballot, and building up to electing progressives to the US Congress. If you had even 40 Greens in the House and 5 Greens in the Senate it would make more of a difference than Cynthia McKinney in the Oval Office. But that seems to be too sensible a plan for someone who egregiously violates CD's rules by posting much more than a thousand words, words that I doubt many will read through completely.
You may not realize it, but you are doing your cause more harm than good.
RSJ,
Pass this information and article to your fellow Kool-Aid drinkers, ObamaBots, of which includes, Mr. Thom Hartmann.

Helen Thomas: Not Even Nixon Tried to Control the Media Like Obama
Wednesday, July 01, 2009
By Penny Starr and Fred Lucas
(CNSNews.com) -
"Following a testy exchange during Wednesday’s briefing with White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas told CNSNews.com that not even Richard Nixon tried to control the press the way President Obama is trying to control the press….“Nixon didn’t try to do that,” Thomas said. “They couldn’t control (the media). They didn’t try….“What the hell do they think we are, puppets?” Thomas said. “They’re supposed to stay out of our business. They are our public servants. We pay them.”….Thomas said she was especially concerned about the arrangement between the Obama Administration and a writer from the liberal Huffington Post Web site. The writer was invited by the White House to President Obama’s press conference last week on the understanding that he would ask Obama a question about Iran from among questions that had been sent to him by people in Iran…..“When you call the reporter the night before you know damn well what they are going to ask to control you,” Thomas said….“I’m not saying there has never been managed news before, but this is carried to fare-thee-well--for the town halls, for the press conferences,” she said. “It’s blatant. They don’t give a damn if you know it or not. They ought to be hanging their heads in shame.”….During today’s briefing, Thomas interrupted a back-and-forth between Gibbs and Chip Reid, the White House correspondent for CBS News, when Reid was questioning Gibbs about who was going to decide what questions would be asked of President Obama in a townhall meeting that was scheduled to take place in Annandale, Va., today….Gibbs then had an exchange involving Reid and Thomas..."

RSJ,
Obama has pulled some tricks right out of the Bush playbook regarding journalists, bloggers, and reporters, and ways to manipulate and control them. But, Helen Thomas has exposed this Obama deception, fraud, and lies and in a big way!
Yes, Obama mirrors Bush in a large manner....Obama is a master of doublespeak, but he has been caught by an older and wiser sage.
RSJ----Stop being such a foolish Obama Kool-Aid drinker!
RSJ,
Yes, Obama is no better than Bush, and now acting like the same dictator Bush behaved for eight long years.

Senate bill fines people refusing health coverage
Health overhaul in Senate bill imposes penalty on those refusing affordable medical coverage
By Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, Associated Press Writer
On Thursday July 2, 2009, 10:02 pm EDT
WASHINGTON (AP) --
"Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama's top domestic priority. The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines will raise around $36 billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about $1,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals. In a revamped health care system envisioned by lawmakers, people would be required to carry health insurance just like motorists must get auto coverage now. The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face penalties. Called "shared responsibility payments," the fines would be set at least at half the cost of basic medical coverage, according to the legislation. The goal is to nudge people to sign up for coverage when they are healthy, not wait until they get sick. In 2008, employer-provided coverage averaged $12,680 a year for a family plan, and $4,704 for individual coverage, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation's annual survey. Senate aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said the cost of the federal plan would be lower but declined to provide specifics. The legislation would exempt certain hardship cases from fines. The fines would be collected through the income tax system...."
Geez, the Democrats are now adopting Mitt Romney-like policies from Massachusetts...Not a good sign that this bill is modelled after Mitt Romney's lame healthcare bill. The Democratic Party now wants to penalize/criminalize citizens who are not able to afford/ buy into this lame system which serves the interests of criminal insurance corporations. And Obama is so much "change" alright!
RSJ--man, you are a Kool-Aid drinker.
RSJ,
Yes, Obama is worse than Bush, especially on agriculture.
HR 2749: Totalitarian Control of the Food Supply
A new food safety bill is on the fast track in Congress-HR 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009. The bill needs to be stopped....HR 2749 gives FDA tremendous power while significantly diminishing existing judicial restraints on actions taken by the agency. The bill would impose a one-size-fits-all regulatory scheme on small farms and local artisanal producers; and it would disproportionately impact their operations for the worse..... HR 2749-Monsanto’s Drive To Destroy Small Farmers Continues ....HR 2749 would impose an annual registration fee of $500 on any “facility” that holds, processes, or manufactures food. [isn't this every home in the US, every garden?] Although “farms” are exempt, the agency has defined “farm” narrowly. [What is the definition?] And people making foods such as lacto-fermented vegetables, cheeses, or breads would be required to register and pay the fee, which could drive beginning and small producers out of business during difficult economic times. [Yes. There are laws against this corporate-size-destroys-the-little-guy policy, aren't there? Are home bread or cheese or lacto-fermented vegetable makers who make for their own families included in this?]....HR 2749 would empower FDA to regulate how crops are raised and harvested. It puts the federal government right on the farm, dictating to our farmers. [This astounding control opens the door to CODEX. WTO "good farming practices" will include the elimination of organic farming by eliminating manure, mandating GMO animal feed, imposing animal drugs, and ordering applications of petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides. Farmers, thus, will be locked not only into the industrialization of once normal and organic farms but into the forced purchase of industry's products. They will be slaves on the land, doing the work they are ordered to do - against their own best wisdom - and paying out to industry against their will....There will be no way to be frugal, to grow one's own grain to feed the animals, to raise healthy animals without GMO grains or drugs, to work with nature at all. Grassfed cattle and poultry and hogs will be finished. So, it's obvious where control will take us. And weren't these the "rumors on the internet" that were dismissed but are clearly the case?]....HR 2749 would give FDA the power to order a quarantine of a geographic area, including “prohibiting or restricting the movement of food or of any vehicle being used or that has been used to transport or hold such food within the geographic area.” [This - "that has been used to transport or hold such food" - would mean all cars that have ever brought groceries home so this means ALL TRANSPORTATION can be shut down under this. This is using food as a cover for martial law.] Under this provision, farmers markets and local food sources could be shut down, even if they are not the source of the contamination. The agency can halt all movement of all food in a geographic area. [This is also a means of total control over the population under the cover of food, and at any time.].... HR 2749 would empower FDA to make random warrantless searches of the business records of small farmers and local food producers, without any evidence whatsoever that there has been a violation. [If these bills cover all who "hold food" then this allows for taking of records of anyone at any time on no basis at all.] Even farmers selling direct to consumers would have to provide the federal government with records on where they buy supplies, how they raise their crops, and a list of customers.... HR 2749 does not address underlying causes of food safety problems such as industrial agriculture practices and the consolidation of our food supply. The industrial food system and food imports are badly in need of effective regulation, but the bill does not specifically direct regulation or resources to these areas....

Joe Biden again reiterates the Obama threats against Iran on ABC's This Week on July 5, 2009. Yes, Obama is bad if not worse than Bush in the war and militarism categories.
Like the Bush administration, the Obama clan continues its war footing and again is threatening Iran with military force, coercion and more intimidation. Obama-Biden-Clinton are militarists-corporatists who believes in the military-police state and spying on law abiding American citizens. Obama-Biden-Clinton also care more about the state of Israel than they do about the welfare and future of the United States of America. Biden and Clinton are avowed pro--Zionists and defenders of Israel no matter what war crimes they commit.
This unwavering support of Israel was present in the Bush years and is still if not more alive in the Obama administration. This war on Iran is all about Israel and not in the best interests of America.
Yes, in regard to the unwavering support of Israel and threats on Iran, the Obama administration, of which is totally pro-Zionist, acts just like the Bush-Cheney administration did before it.

Obama Scapegoats Teachers, Continues Bush Education Policies
By Tom Eley
11 March 2009
"In an address before the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, President Barack Obama indicated that he would continue the essential features of the educational policy of his predecessor, George Bush….Obama said his goal was "to finally make No Child Left Behind live up to its name by ensuring not only that teachers and principals get the funding they need, but that the money is tied to results." To achieve this, Obama emphasized an increasing rigidity for standardized testing of students, and the linking of both pay for teachers and educational funding to these test results. Just as Bush had done, Obama claimed that such "performance incentives" will improve the delivery of education to students….Nothing could be further from the truth. As abundant experience with No Child Left Behind has made clear, linking school funding and teacher pay to student performance on standardized exams—tests whose pedagogical value is dubious at best—undermines those working class and minority school districts that are in need of the most assistance….Among several other rightwing reforms he enunciated in his speech, Obama called on state legislatures to lift quotas on the formation of "charter schools"—publicly funded institutions that compete with the preexisting public schools for students and resources. In Chicago—where Obama's secretary of education, Arne Duncan, worked as the school system's "Chief Executive Officer"—the advance of the charter school has led to the closure of numerous " low-performing" schools in poor neighborhoods….The speech was notable for Obama's scapegoating of teachers for the failures of the American educational system. Obama said that improvement in education requires "states and school districts taking steps to move bad teachers out of the classroom."…This will require an attack on the workplace rules and seniority system that have long governed teaching. " Let me be clear," he continued, "if a teacher is given a chance but still does not improve, there is no excuse for that person to continue teaching. I reject a system that rewards failure and protects a person from its consequences." While he finds the "courage" to bully public school teachers, Obama has no difficulty in rewarding the failure of the financial executives who have triggered the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression….No doubt hundreds of thousands of teachers voted for Obama in the hope that he would reverse Bush's disastrous educational policies. In his speech, Obama went out of his way to slap these teachers in the face, noting that "many supporters of my party have resisted the idea of rewarding excellence in teaching with extra pay, even though we know it can make a difference in the classroom."… The major teachers' unions, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA) spent millions of dollars on behalf of Obama and the Democrats, falsely promising their members Obama would be a true ally of public education in the White House. Now the teachers' unions will fall in line behind the same policies that, when used by the Bush administration, they denounced…. At the time of the publication, the AFT and NEA had yet to comment on Obama's speech on their web sites. The president of the AFT, Randi Weingarten, quoted in the Washington Post, welcomed Obama's proposals, commenting only that "the devil is in the details."…As for funding education, Obama offered nothing new. Where he discussed specific allocations, these were already tied to his stimulus package that passed Congress last month. Like the stimulus as a whole, Obama's funding for the nation's educational requirements doesn't begin to address the level of need. … It was an ugly little speech, saturated with jingoism, free market boosterism, and moral hectoring. Obama offered not so much as a nod to the classical, universalistic, understanding of education—the cultivation of young minds in the arts and sciences toward a fuller, richer life in the service of society and humanity as a whole…."

Obama Channels Cheney
Obama adopts Bush view on the powers of the presidency
“The Obama Administration this week released its predecessor's post-9/11 legal memoranda in the name of "transparency," producing another round of feel-good Bush criticism. Anyone interested in President Obama's actual executive-power policies, however, should look at his position on warrantless wiretapping. Dick Cheney must be smiling....In a federal lawsuit, the Obama legal team is arguing that judges lack the authority to enforce their own rulings in classified matters of national security. The standoff concerns the Oregon chapter of the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation, a Saudi Arabian charity that was shut down in 2004 on evidence that it was financing al Qaeda. Al-Haramain sued the Bush Administration in 2005, claiming it had been illegally wiretapped....At the heart of Al-Haramain's case is a classified document that it says proves that the alleged eavesdropping was not authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA. That record was inadvertently disclosed after Al-Haramain was designated as a terrorist organization; the Bush Administration declared such documents state secrets after their existence became known....In July, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the President's right to do so, which should have ended the matter. But the San Francisco panel also returned the case to the presiding district court judge, Vaughn Walker, ordering him to decide if FISA pre-empts the state secrets privilege. If he does, Al-Haramain would be allowed to use the document to establish the standing to litigate....The Obama Justice Department has adopted a legal stance identical to, if not more aggressive than, the Bush version. It argues that the court-forced disclosure of the surveillance programs would cause "exceptional harm to national security" by exposing intelligence sources and methods. Last Friday the Ninth Circuit denied the latest emergency motion to dismiss, again kicking matters back to Judge Walker....In court documents filed hours later, Justice argues that the decision to release classified information "is committed to the discretion of the Executive Branch, and is not subject to judicial review. Moreover, the Court does not have independent power . . . to order the Government to grant counsel access to classified information when the Executive Branch has denied them such access." The brief continues that federal judges are "ill-equipped to second-guess the Executive Branch."....That's about as pure an assertion of Presidential power as they come, and we're beginning to wonder if the White House has put David Addington, Mr. Cheney's chief legal aide, on retainer. The practical effect is to prevent the courts from reviewing the legality of the warrantless wiretapping program that Mr. Obama repeatedly claimed to find so heinous -- at least before taking office. Justice, by the way, is making the same state secrets argument in a separate lawsuit involving rendition and a Boeing subsidiary....Hide the children, but we agree with Mr. Obama that the President has inherent Article II Constitutional powers that neither the judiciary nor statutes like FISA can impinge upon. The FISA appeals court said as much in a decision released in January, as did Attorney General Eric Holder during his confirmation hearings. It's reassuring to know the Administration is refusing to compromise core executive-branch prerogatives, especially on war powers....Then again, we are relearning that the "Imperial Presidency" is only imperial when the President is a Republican. Democrats who spent years denouncing George Bush for "spying on Americans" and "illegal wiretaps" are now conspicuously silent. Yet these same liberals are going ballistic about the Bush-era legal memos released this week. Cognitive dissonance is the polite explanation, and we wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Holder released them precisely to distract liberal attention from the Al-Haramain case....By the way, those Bush documents are Office of Legal Counsel memos, not policy directives. They were written in the immediate aftermath of a major terrorist attack, when more seemed possible, and it would have been irresponsible not to explore the outer limits of Presidential war powers in the event of a worst-case scenario. Based on what we are learning so far about Mr. Obama's policies, his Administration would do the same...."
Answer me why Obama welcomed Traitor Joe Lieberman back into the fold so fast after the election? I mean there was Joe Lieberman clapping and smiling with wide eyes opened as Sarah Palin said that Obama "consorts with terrorists."
Obviously, Obama did not care too much that Palin and McCain lied about him during the campaign. So, if Obama did not care about Palin's lies by welcoming the two-faced Lieberman back into the fold, why should I care less?
Look it pal, Obama is a liar just like Palin is whether you can hear this truth or not. I take Obama on his words and so far he has delivered nothing. The focus here is with Obama, not Palin. Palin is a nobody at this point. Obama is the president and I do not go along with the latest media spectacles as you seem to do.
Mike Feder on Sirius Left 146 on Satellite Radio also thinks Obama is a liar. So does Dave Marsh and Kevin Alexander Gray who are on Sunday's from 2-5 p.m. on Sirius Left 146 on Satellite Radio. There are plenty of leftists who do not support Obama any longer, just as should be the case. Obama will continue to support the corporate Fascist Agenda too.
Dear ObamaBot--RSJ
I am a leftist who joined the Green Party when Obama showed no spine by opening his arms to Joe Lieberman.
You must have loved it when Lieberman stood there and clapped his hands as Sarah Palin told crowd after crowd that "Obama consorts with terrorists," and Joe had a big smile on his face, clapping with his hands.
So, yes I am totally aware of Sarah Palin's lies and distortions. To suggest Obama is above lies and distortions himself is also intellectually dishonest on your part here.
Obama has continued Bush's torture policies and signed an Executive Order to hold protesters under detention without trial. You must approve of Obama's expansionist war in Afghanistan and the billion dollar base being built in Pakistan, even as America is broke. Obama's budget is bigger in the war department than Bush's. I know this is hard for you to come to terms with, but, go analyze the Obama administration's budget. Obama is not that antiwar president you thought he was.
Anyone against expansion, imperialism, and American Empire does not and will not support Barack Obama. I am a true leftist against American Empire. Obama supports the Imperial State of America and I do not support such militarist-police-corporatist state measures as you plainly do.
No, I am not a Republican or a liberal. I am a leftist and you need to understand what a leftist is before you go off half-cocked running your mouth in useless words. I am not wedded to the Democratic Party as a leftist the way you so-called "liberal/progressives" seem to be. The Democratic Party does not own me as it does you and apparently, Thom Hartmann.
I suggest you go over to Black Agenda Report and read their fine analysis of Barack "Fraud" Obama. Are Glen Ford, Margaret Kimberley, and Bruce Dixon wrong in their astute analysis of Obama? James Petras another leftist academic and Radical Scholar Paul Street, as well as the Scholar Adolph Reed have all been critical of Obama and they thought he was not what the liberal/progressives thought him to be, from the get-go. These people forgot more about what the left stands for than you or your pal Thom Hartmann know. You are the fool here.
I am tired of that crap that in criticizing Obama one is either a closet Republican or racist.
Perhaps, you are the one who is the real closet conservative who likes Ronald Reagan as Obama and his bankster pals do.
I will not even start on the anti-gay policies Obama has kept firmly in place, but, he acted fast when the GayTM seemed to be leaving the Democratic Party coffers really fast.
Take off your blinders and stop drinking the Kool-Aid.
I disagree with you.
I am now in the Green Party.
Any true leftist would not support Obama. And, no, contrary to your ridiculopus accusations, I am not a paid troll/shill for the Republican Party.
I hope you stop drinking the Obama Kool-Aid.
Me thinks you cannot think for yourself. And, yes, there is not much difference between Obama and Bush. I cettainly can give you a list but that is not my job here. I do not give a rat's ass what Democratic Party Gatekeeper Thom Hartmann says. And, bashing Sarah Palin continually is what the media bots want to divert your attention from what is really going on. No, I have decided not to take the bait of the corporate media who has become obsessed with meaningless news stories and obsession with Palin borders on the pathological. If she has committed crimes, then she should be prosecuted like any other American. At this time, Obama continues the torture policies and the police state measures of the Bush-Cheney administration. You can excuse Obama for his continuation of the unilateral and pre-emptive war strategy of the Bush-Cheney administration, but, I will not.
Being anti-war is anti-war and I do not care who sits in the Oval Office. Got that?
I think you are a troublemaker who has no respect for those who do not buy into the Obama fraud and deception.
You need to wake up!
There's plenty that Sarah Palin lied about and we all know she's dishonest. But the lies Obama puffed up just to get elected are having a more damaging impact than Palin's. Unless Obama turns progressive and so far he hasn't and has no intentions of doing so, he and his cabal are just as bad as Bush and his cabal. You're the fool with no shame in your blood !
JillSwanson,
Thanks.
Bring America Back !!!!........! Always amazes me, in all these articles by so-called pro writers & pundits, and long time mainstream media commentators==they observe the forrest but fail to see the trees. In this case, the NY Times.
...... It was David Letterman, Dummies, It was Letterman !
Sarah Palin tried to pull a 'Don Imus", and get Letterman fired, and boy did it ever backfire !!!
......If the Katie Couric interview was not enough, then surely the Tina Fey SNL potrayal was sufficient to tell Palin herself that she was not Presidential material, much less Vice Presidential material. That was like Palin looking into her own mirror==that's how good Tina Fey is !
**Frankly, Palin has not been 'Electable', especially since the McCain -Palin ticket lost. She has known for a long time the Repubbies would not call upon her again--with her losing baggage, bad karma, plus could she even have won the Governorship of Alaska again ????
**But the last straw was when she took David Letterman to
the stocks and chains, for his unsensitive joking about her daughter(s) !! Too many of Palin's base are late nite fans of Letterman to allow her to get him fired for the Jokes!
No question she took the insult way too far.
**That is where the full court press came from==the national Neocon base telling her the dream was no longer there. Maybe as explicitly to suggest she not run for Governor again. As she says..==only dead fish go along with the flow!
**So she is smart to duck under the radar of hot politic.
No worry, she is not getting together a campaign dollar war-chest cause it ain,t gonna happen, although she will allow writers like the NY Times to delude their readers.
The best we can hope for is that her future Book be a Truth Expose of what she knows of the Bush War Criminals, and that McCain would've been Bush ##3. That would sell a lot more than her auto-biography ! Family values not so much !
I suggest the title of her Book be: 'Never Argue With Your Bartender, and Never Argue With Your Late-Nite TV Host' .
****It was Letterman, Dummies !!!!
I suspect Sarah Palin is the secret mother of Michael Jackson's lovechild "Prince Michael Jackson II" (also known as 'Blanket') and that she's laying low so the media won't make the connection.
You betcha!
Yes, Palin is quite the Clown, but The Great Deceiver, the Eloquent Liar is letting Mountain tops be blown to hell, Oh Bomb Ya held out an Olive Branch but once elected it turned into a sword.
Next time Nader, McKinney, anyone.
The .01% of the US that owns 20% of this country, the 1% that own the next 30% are shooting the rest of us in the head.

happy 4th to all
as the tundra thaws, the wink slinks.
what bodies are rising to the surface?
Really, everything is getting so loony there's nothing left to do but laugh. Yesterday it was whose state legislature is craziest, and there was some fierce competition for that title. Today it's Palin who with all her winks and wiggles, is nevertheless as incoherent as Shrub. And people vote for these clowns? Sheesh.
Can't wait to find out what's coming down the pike tomorrow.
When the people fear their government there is tyranny,
when the government fears the people there is liberty.

"And people vote for these clowns?"
If they want the opiates, then yes.
How much better off would have the USA been if her initial career ambition, to be an ESPN anchor, had been fulfilled?
"Her fans immediately interpreted the resignation as a canny move to get her back down to the lower 48... (Mary Matalin called it "brilliant.")"
Apparently brilliant is the new word for very very stupid. Welcome to dumbed-down America.
@hamster July 4th, 2009 4:07 pm: Neocon nutcase and former Cheney aide Mary Matalin also called Junior Bush's handling of the economy, Karl Rove's 2006 vote predictions, Michael "Heckuva Job, Brownie" Brown's reponse to Hurricane Katrina, Rudy Giuliani's disastrous 2008 presidential campaign, and Rush Limbaugh's daily pipsqueakings some form of the word 'brilliant,' so we can stick that in the 'McCain's gonna win in 2008' circular file. Name any issue of the past ten years and you'll find ol' Clutch Cargo mouth solidly on the wrong side of it. A Matalin expectoration of brilliance is pretty much the cherry on the top of the fallen cake, an assurance that the opposite is true. Besides, she's angling for a job with the Palinator's presidential effort and this is the way Mrs. Carville does her business -- public logrolling disguised as political analysis.
Gail Collins is good. This is a really funny read. Needing some humor today, this article hit the spot for me. Thanks Gail.
moonpie- as much as we can't stand obama you should resign yourself to the fact that barring some sort of a major event
taking him down he will win a second term.
Palin...the new pandemic....
We really have to thank the good senator from Arizona for bring us a new form of perpetual entertainment to go along with perpetual war
I for one am beginning to actually like her...this country needs...deserves her...like California needed the Schwarzenegger the US needed Reagan or ...W...or Clinton...all buffoons

When it comes to war and looting, Obama equals Palin. He's even worse since he professed to be one thing and its stunningly clear he's just another republican.
Please dispense with this ongoing silly Palin bashing, and clean up your own backyards..."democrats".
2012 is just around the corner, and at this point its easy to say Blackbush is going to be a one-termer. You can bet the farm on it (if you still have the farm, of course).
@ moonpie July 4th, 2009 2:45 pm wrote: "Please dispense with this ongoing silly Palin bashing, and clean up your own backyards...'democrats'."
Please dispense with giving anyone advice if you support the silly Republicans. Obama and some of the Dems are trying to undo 30 years of GOP corporate looting and incompetence -- they are only trying to clean up the overflow of garbage from your own backyard, piled high with the trash of corporate-profits-uber-alles Reaganism. Meanwhile, the media viability of Princess Caribou was a creation of the McCain campaign, not the Democrats or progressives. Admit it, moonpie, you voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004, and McCain in 2008, didn't you?
Go ahead and lose your disease-ridden, ground-water-fouling Big Agra hog farm betting against Obama in 2012. You must be feasting on Monsanto processed corn products ('Genetically-Modified to Cause Stupidity!') if you seriously think Palin, Romney, Gingrich or Haley Barbour (?!) can beat him. Times have changed and you obviously haven't caught up.
In case you didn't know, Obama supports Big Corn and Big Agri so losing Obama in 2012 won't make a difference. Obama and the Dems are doing nothing to clean up the GOP mess but are in fact continuing it. And in case you didn't know, Obama is a big Raygun supporter and will continue his economic policies. He also bashed the 1960s and 1970s which were actually better than the 1980s and after. If you had actually paid attention to moonpie's posts, he never supported Republicans but neither would he support cave-in Democrats. Please take off you Obama goggles and get with picture !
JillSwanson,
Great points you made. I am glad you have seen through the Obama deception.
Any true leftist worth their salt would not support Barack Obama, or the fraud he has brought upon well-meaning people, and peace loving Americans.
"I am glad you have seen through the Obama deception."
he did promise transparency.
I wished that Obama had anything positive worthy of mentioning but so far he hasn't offered any and he shamelessly moves to the right. I'm beginning to think that we might have been far better off with Mccain/Palin in office for 4 years. At least with them, you know what's coming to you unlike Obama and his cabal.
So, having something really really bad happen, is OK, as long as you know it is coming?
That progressives, or leftish voters, are even considering that Palin et al might be a better choice is insanity.
And there is no sign, Purdum reported, that Palin has made any attempt to bone up on the issues so that next time around, she could run as a candidate who actually had some grasp of the intricacies of foreign and domestic policy.
Sarah Payless, like George Wanker Bush, cannot bone up on issues because she doesn't have the intellectual capacity to do so. Bush never did his "homework" because he couldn't do his homework. His "gut" was his rationalization for his deep seated stupidity. Payless is no different. The Republican party, an organization dedicated to stupidity (among other things), now absolutely demands this. And for this reason, Payless stands a very good chance of being their nominee in '012. And Bareass Obimbo, with his cowardice and deceit, is playing right into the Republicans' hands.
"His 'gut' was his rationalization for his deep seated stupidity."
which proves he has shit for brains.
Forget about Palin. If Obama keeps getting worse then at this rate, even Palin will look like a "perfect" GOP nominee by 2012. As it is, I'm upset with Obama's deteriorating performance and further trashing progressive values and ideas that if he keeps this up and I were forced to pick between Palin and Obama by 2012, I'd pick Palin in insanity. Thankfully, there will be other parties to choose from such as Green, Peace, etc ... or at least I hope there will be.
Wrong all around, it would be insane to even think voting for a democrat or republican because that is what we need to get away from, those that have commandeered our democracy for the benefit of the few at the expense of the many, the taxpayer(the money glory hole for all those criminals stealing our money and lives).
Obama has proven to be the biggest disgrace perpertrated on this country and definitely in the top 5 blue dog traitors in our government.
Perhaps a Palin presidency would end the series of presidencies that became failed because of wasted opportunities: Bush I missing a chance to bring stability to the middle East; Clinton botching health care and Somalia--and Monica's dress; Bush II frittering away global good will after 9/11--and the economy; Obama blowing the chance to control banks and health care. The voters would have no expectations of Palin. She would have no expectations of herself. Every day would be a disaster, but she would make news with reporting of her regular face lifts and body tucks, the secret service nannies for the bastard grandchildren in the white house and the regular hunts of imported moose at Camp David. The scoreboard at the end of four years would read 0-0-0-0. Shall we go for 8?
She said only if she were forced to choose between the two with no other options on the ballot. I seriously doubt that she supports either party. You are right that voting for either party would be insane. I don't think any of us here would vote for Palin just to get rid of Mccain. I look forward to helping the Green Party recover. I am also open to supporting a proposed party on this site, the Main Street Party (thanks BeForKids).
JillSwanson,
Yes, the focus needs to be on Obama and the Democratic Party right now.
If Palin is so useless and all that, why keep the focus on her? I do not see what obsessing over Palin means anyway, other than escaping from the real issues out there.
The media is into celebrity journalism and selling papers than it is in getting at the important issues. Serious people can see right through the superficial media's obvious obsession/lust of Sarah Palin. I prefer to not to feed into the pathological media's latest obsessions, but, that by no means I endorse or support Palin at all. It just means that I am tired of the media's latest spectacles.
@JenniferBedingfield July 4th, 2009 2:23 pm: You did it again, just like on the "Palin: I Quit" thread at CD: "...if he keeps this up and I were forced to pick between Palin and Obama by 2012, I'd pick Palin in insanity." I'll say it once more -- you're right, you'd have to be insane to vote for Palin for president -- over anybody.
It would be equally insane to vote to reelect Obama given his utterly dismal performance so far. Maybe we would have been better off getting stuck with Mccain/Palin for 4 years. In case you didn't read her post correctly, Jennifer said that she'd vote Palin only if she were forced to pick between Obama and Palin and no one else. I wouldn't blame her for the insanity forced on her due to Obama's pathetic record and catering to the corporate fascists. Obama has done nothing to move the country in the progressive or liberal direction and has no plans to do so. Please take off those Obama goggles and get with the picture !
@ JillSwanson July 4th, 2009 9:34 pm: I had no problems understanding Jennifer's post and it was silly, since there is always the option of writing in a candidate.
Voting for Palin for any office is insane, and that's what I pointed out.
You're wrong about Obama's record but, if you're an honest person, you'll research what he has been doing since his election from many sources and not just the Obama-haters.
If you are sincerely a progressive, Jill, how does it feel to agree with, and echo the talking points of, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh regarding Obama?
Proud of yourself?
Please take off those anti Obama goggles and realise that voting for Palin et al in reaction to being angry at Obama is going to get the left nowhere, and IS insane.
Things might be better if McCain / Palin won, you say? Were you in a coma during the Bush presidency?
Note, I am not defending Obama, nor arguing that he should be voted for. Simply pointing out the insanity of voting for someone even further to the right, because you find the current choice too far to the right.
Choosing the lesser evil is still choosing evil. Choosing the greater evil is insanity.
You fail to see her point and that much is obvious....
Take off your blinders and put down that Kool-Aid drink. You are totally intoxicated with the Obama Myth that change was coming around the corner.
Like the Bush administration, the Obama clan continues its war footing and again is threatening Iran with military force, coercion and more intimidation.
Joe Biden again reiterates the Obama threats against Iran on ABC's This Week on July 5, 2009. Yes, Obama is bad if not worse than Bush in the war and militarism categories.
Again, take off your blinders and realize that Obama is a militarist-corporatist who believes in the military-police state and spying on law abiding American citizens.
JillSwanson,
Unlike the ObamaBots, you think clearly and thoughtful. Yes, Obams is surely in bed with those "corporate fascists" and certainly "Obama has done nothing to move the country in the progressive or liberal direction and has no plans to do so."
You are 100% correct and I like you hope those phony-fake "liberal/progressives" can sometime in the near future, "take off those Obama goggles and get with the picture!"

Palin is a true Republican. Loud mouth, corrupt and totally dumb.
Obama's best pals are the banksters and corrupt people like Larry Summers, Tim Geithner, Rahm Emanuel, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton.
Obama does not have the balls or the spine to deal with those telling him what to do. Obama acts on cue.
Any true leftist would not support Obama whatsover. Obama is liar, deceiver and fraud who supports the military-police-corporatist state with doublespeak.
Obama has mastered the art of doublespeak.
As I will say over again, a true leftist would not support Obama and those of you whom still do--Shame on you!
So if Palin would become president, would she resign before finishing her term ends because of the media and criticism would make it impossible to be an effective president?
Guesses:
She got a plea bargain - quit or fry.
Next? Million$$ book deal, then 'Dancing w/the Stars,' then divorce from Todd (who clearly can barely stand her) then new FOX show with Matlin, Coulter and Lynne Cheney: "The Lunatic View"
Once Palin found out how about the boatloads of money O'Reilly, Coulter and other palinesque blabbermouths rake in, she decided to ditch the governor gig and start raking it in herself.
That's it. She was told to resign or the investigations would lead to indictments. Now that she is no longer governor (by the end of the month) the investigations can be quietly dropped or lead nowhere.Saves everyone a lot of money and embarrassment.
