The Gaza Flotilla Embodies the Arab Spring Spirit
As governments sit by idly, civilians from multiple countries challenge Israel's unjust occupation of Gaza.
Earlier this year we watched with amazement as hundreds of thousands of Arabs charged into the streets of their cities demanding reform. The uprisings led to the departure of several leaders who had ruled for decades and also tested (and continue to test) several others.
But what led to this outpouring is much the same as the motivation behind the flotilla initiative which seeks to challenge the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip.
When fundamentally unjust situations are left unaddressed by states, the people must step in. That is precisely what happened in Tahrir square when hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Egyptians lost all faith in the government's ability to reform.
That is also precisely what drives the flotilla and the activists aboard it. They have watched as the collective punishment of 1.5 million civilians lingers with no objections coming from states that can change the situation. In fact, the siege of Gaza has been supported by Israel, the United States and Mubarak's Egypt (though post-Mubarak Egypt promises to be different).
The blockade of Gaza is just one part of a multilayered siege on the Gaza Strip. The layers include control of land entry and exit points for commercial and humanitarian goods, control over the amount of electricity and water available to the people of Gaza, control of the air and sea lanes, and so on.
The vast majority of water in Gaza is not fit for human consumption. The vast majority of people live on less than $2 a day and rely on daily handouts from aid organizations due to rampant unemployment.
The Israelis try to whitewash the devastating effects of the siege by ignoring the exhaustive documentation by aid organizations and human rights groups, and by claiming they facilitate the entry of hundreds of trucks a day into Gaza. This is tantamount to justifying the encaging of an innocent person by claiming to shove some bread and water through the bars once a day.
In reality, the number of trucks getting into Gaza are far below what the UN believes is necessary to meet the minimum standards of the population.
Exports, which are commercial goods leaving Gaza, have been stymied as well. In fact, in 2005, Israel agreed to allow 400 trucks of exports per day out of Gaza by 2006 yet less than 200 trucks of exports were permitted exit throughout all of 2008-2010! There is yet to be any rational argument from the Israelis as to why they prevent exports from leaving Gaza, and the only plausible explanation is that they want to emaciate the Palestinian economy in the strip.
It should also come as no surprise that Israelis are working around the clock in an attempt to vilify the people on these boats, just like the when the Mubarak regime attempted to do the same with the Egyptians that challenged his rule.
But the passengers on the flotilla realize that nonviolent disobedience is key to the success of their mission to raise awareness about the unjust blockade. The Israelis have even been caught distributing fake videos accusing the flotilla organizers of homophobia, alliances with terrorists and even suggesting the passengers might use chemical weapons.
For a state that claims to be a "democracy", their response to nonviolent disobedience is as irrational as any neighboring autocrat's.
Vilification is, of course, the first step to justifying violence, and there has been no shortage of violence used against nonviolent activists during the Arab Spring. It seems Israel is laying the groundwork to apply similarly repressive techniques against the good-willed passengers of these boats.
So what will the reaction be?
As the flotilla approaches Gaza, another January 25th moment presents itself. You either stand with members of civil society who have challenged the unjust practices of states, or you stand with those states and their unjust practices.
About 40 brave Americans have cast their lot with civil society by setting sail on the American-flagged ship to Gaza, the "Audacity of Hope". Among them are men and women, elderly, and many Jewish-Americans as well. They will be joined by about ten ships and 300 other activists. They simply refuse to sit idly by like their governments as the crime of the siege of Gaza continues.
As the collective punishment of 1.5 millions civilians persists, it's time to ask yourself: which side are you on?

it really does - psyop'd by the israelis and bought off by the us government
my hope lies with them and i hope the zionist nazi storm troupers don't kill them
like they did the last time
and the time before that
and the time before that
and the time before that
see where i'm going..............
We hear a lot about how many Jews are on this flotilla. And that is why the flotilla is a failure. Israel did what it needed to do to stop the flotilla because they did not want to be bothered with having to discriminate between Jews and Goys when the shooting started. If there were no Jews on board, the flotilla would've sailed, and it would've been a turkey shoot and massacre, and the world would've responded by inching closer to a total boycott of the Jewish state. Forgery or not, everything in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion has come to pass. Nothing left to do but drop our pants and bend over. Judaism is neither a religion nor an ethnicity. It is the most wildly successful mafia in the history of the human race. If the only thing you can do is to disown them, then do it. Fire your Jewish friends. If they had any moral fibre they would've ended this Gaza nightmare long ago at absolutely no cost to themselves.
I'm still rooting for the flotilla to "approach Gaza", but this article seems to have been written before the Greek government, shamefully and reprehensibly collaborating with the totalitarian authorities in the Amerikan/Zionist Israel hegemony, effectively scuttled the "Audacity of Hope" as soon as it launched.
I've read somewhere that there are other vessels in the flotilla, leaving from other countries, that are en route. But there's scant information about any "progress" the flotilla may still be making since Greece lowered the boom on what I assume is its flagship.
The information published on CD has mostly been about the woeful treatment of the "Audacity of Hope" and its captain, with some declarations amounting to optimistic bravado from the thwarted passengers.
If the flotilla is indeed proceeding apace elsewhere, or if there's a realistic chance that the "Audacity" will get a second wind, I would think that platforms like CD would prioritize such good news.
The "Arab Spring" has become a failure. The various nations are just changing puppets, not actually making any real progress on the ground. Egypt is under the fist of the Military, Libya has puppets leading the charge with the French and U.S. pulling the strings and the story continues. Puppet governments replacing puppet governments. I just wish it weren''t true. I had hope, but don't see any real progress. Poor Egypt, replacing dying Mubarak with a military government that will put another U.S. puppet in his place.
What Arab Spring? First Arabs should get rid of their military and other brute force tyrants, have a real "spring", not a (boxed-in) spring, and then have an intelligent conversation with their neighbour Israel. These tyrants and their supporters and sycophants in the Muslim clergy are the real, and far more ruthless, murderous enemies of Arabs than Isreali ever was and is.
A related story on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation website , cbc.ca, has been infested with pro-Israel bloggers. Several repeat submitters continue to paint the mission to Gaza as a party of fools intent on helping terrorists against Israel.
What bothers me most is that CBC censors are refusing to accept any of my submissions about how Mossad maintains a PR presence in different countries, inundating websites with zionist propaganda. I invite CD readers to visit cbc.ca and go to the story : http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2011/07/05/gaza-flotilla-arrests.html
