Iraq: Torture. Corruption. Civil war. America has Certainly Left Its Mark
When you invade someone else's country, there has to be a first soldier - just as there has to be a last.
The first man in front of the first unit of the first column of the invading American army to reach Fardous Square in the centre of Baghdad in 2003 was Corporal David Breeze of the 3rd Battalion, Fourth Marine Regiment. For that reason, of course, he pointed out to me that he wasn't a soldier at all. Marines are not soldiers. They are Marines. But he hadn't talked to his mom for two months and so - equally inevitably - I offered him my satellite phone to call his home in Michigan. Every journalist knows you'll get a good story if you lend your phone to a soldier in a war.
"Hi, you guys," Corporal Breeze bellowed. "I'm in Baghdad. I'm ringing to say 'Hi! I love you. I'm doing fine. I love you guys.' The war will be over in a few days. I'll see you soon." Yes, they all said the war would be over soon. They didn't consult the Iraqis about this pleasant notion. The first suicide bombers - a policeman in a car and then two women in a car - had already hit the Americans on the long highway up to Baghdad. There would be hundreds more. There will be hundreds more in Iraq in the future.
So we should not be taken in by the tomfoolery on the Kuwaiti border in the last few hours, the departure of the last "combat" troops from Iraq two weeks ahead of schedule. Nor by the infantile cries of "We won" from teenage soldiers, some of whom must have been 12-years-old when George W Bush sent his army off on this catastrophic Iraqi adventure. They are leaving behind 50,000 men and women - a third of the entire US occupation force - who will be attacked and who will still have to fight against the insurgency.
Yes, officially they are there to train the gunmen and militiamen and the poorest of the poor who have joined the new Iraqi army, whose own commander does not believe they will be ready to defend their country until 2020. But they will still be in occupation - for surely one of the the "American interests" they must defend is their own presence - along with the thousands of armed and indisciplined mercenaries, western and eastern, who are shooting their way around Iraq to safeguard our precious western diplomats and businessmen. So say it out loud: we are not leaving.
Instead, the millions of American soldiers who have passed through Iraq have brought the Iraqis a plague. From Afghanistan - in which they showed as much interest after 2001 as they will show when they start "leaving" that country next year - they brought the infection of al-Qa'ida. They brought the disease of civil war. They injected Iraq with corruption on a grand scale. They stamped the seal of torture on Abu Ghraib - a worthy successor to the same prison under Saddam's vile rule - after stamping the seal of torture on Bagram and the black prisons of Afghanistan. They sectarianised a country that, for all its Saddamite brutality and corruption, had hitherto held its Sunnis and Shias together.
And because the Shias would invariably rule in this new "democracy", the American soldiers gave Iran the victory it had sought so vainly in the terrible 1980-88 war against Saddam. Indeed, men who had attacked the US embassy in Kuwait in the bad old days - men who were allies of the suicide bombers who blew up the Marine base in Beirut in 1983 - now help to run Iraq. The Dawa were "terrorists" in those days. Now they are "democrats". Funny how we've forgotten the 241 US servicemen who died in the Lebanon adventure. Corporal David Breeze was probably two or three-years-old then.
But the sickness continued. America's disaster in Iraq infected Jordan with al-Qa'ida - the hotel bombings in Amman - and then Lebanon again. The arrival of the gunmen from Fatah al-Islam in the Nahr al-Bared Palestinian camp in the north of Lebanon - their 34-day war with the Lebanese army - and the scores of civilian dead were a direct result of the Sunni uprising in Iraq. Al-Qa'ida had arrived in Lebanon. Then Iraq under the Americans re-infected Afghanistan with the suicide bomber, the self-immolator who turned America's soldiers from men who fight to men who hide.
Anyway, they are busy re-writing the narrative now. Up to a million Iraqis are dead. Blair cares nothing about them - they do not feature, please note, in his royalties generosity. And nor do most of the American soldiers. They came. They saw. They lost. And now they say they've won. How the Arabs, surviving on six hours of electricity a day in their bleak country, must be hoping for no more victories like this one.
Then and now
3,000 The estimated number of Iraqi civilians killed last year. That's less than a tenth of the 34,500 killed in 2007 but it's still testament to the dangers faced each day by Iraqis.
200 The number of Iraqis known to be still held in US custody - a fraction of the 26,000 held in military prisons three years ago.
15.5 The average number of hours of electricity a day Baghdad receives, a marked impovement from the six hours it got three years ago but still not up to pre-invasions standards, when Iraqi cities could rely on 24-hour power.

Show AllI think that it may be more than a little naive to claim that the US introduced torture, corruption, and civil war to Iraq.
In fact, we simply replaced the Iraqi brand of those elements with our own.

Now there's a fair comment. But the rest of the article was pretty much on the mark.
Actually, the USA is also responsible for the torture, corruption and civil war under Saddam.
"The coup that brought the Ba'ath Party to power in 1963 was celebrated by the United States.
The CIA had a hand in it. They had funded the Ba'ath Party - of which Saddam Hussein was a young member - when it was in opposition.
US diplomat James Akins served in the Baghdad Embassy at the time. Mr. Akins said, "I knew all the Ba'ath Party leaders and I liked them".
"The CIA were definitely involved in that coup. We saw the rise of the Ba'athists as a way of replacing a pro-Soviet government with a pro-American one and you don't get that chance very often.
"Sure, some people were rounded up and shot but these were mostly communists so that didn't bother us".
Fisk has been called many things by fans and detractors alike, but he has never demonstrated naivety.
As Oikos notes, Iraq had those items-- but Amerika supersized them.
The mention of "Saddamite corruption" is there in black and white.
Or do you mean before Saddam, since he rose to power on the heels of American black ops?
The Israeli faction that completely controls American foreign policy decided it was time to encircle Iran creating massive bases and embassies in Afghanistan and Iraq to keep the nuclear monopoly of Israel intact in order to continue to terrorize the middle east again reminding us why the establishment of the fanatical state of Israel with its expansionist designs was a terrible mistake.
Every single American, whether you thumped away at your keyboard, attended the odd demonstration, persistently voiced your opposition, took part in the killing or just sat on your fat ass and did nothing, bares equal responsibility for the atrocities perpetrated during the invasion and occupation of Iraq. The majority of people on this planet will never forget what you did America.
The USA over the past 40 years has managed to become the plague of the earth.
Iraq: Torture. Corruption. Civil war. America has Certainly Left Its Mark
The mark the United States has left is upon itself. It is not the Mark of Zorro or the Mark of Cain but of arrogance, cruelty and stupidity beyond any human measure.
The connection between America's rapacious disregard for the well being of others and our own accelerating slide from world pre-eminance is too complicated for my poor brain, but I know it is there. By some mysterious internal mechanism plagues tend to erupt, do their damage, and then vanish.
By every measure, individual wealth, per capita income, quality of life, education, health care, infant mortality, life expectancy, crime and incarceration rates, America is on the decline compared to the rest of the industrial world. I'm told the Shining City on a Hill doesn't much register with folks outside the country any more. Sic transit gloria mundi and good freaking riddance.
We're busy now carving our own epitaph, as we turn our fangs from expensive raids on foreign resources back to our own immigrant population and ultimately ourselves. America, Beloved Fatherland. 1776-20??. Assholes to the bitter end.
I repeat the remark by an unknown american poet i came across years ago:
because it really defines "americans" today :
"WE americans CAREFULLY NURTURE an attitude of detached indifference to the suffering of others......even if WE are the CAUSE of it"
Thank you George W. Bush, Don Rumsfeld, Carl Rove, and all of your evil team that lied and distorted the truth to take America into war.
American control of more middle east oil is not worth the terrible cost of death and distruction that you caused.
These people represent evil incarnate!
Anyway, they are busy re-writing the narrative now. Up to a million Iraqis are dead. Blair cares nothing about them - they do not feature, please note, in his royalties generosity.
I had the same thought, Blair = war criminal

Thanks for posting the video. It was disturbing and upsetting but everyone should be forced to watch it, as we made German citizens walk through concentration camps after they were liberated to see what their government had done. I did a search for more information about depleted uranium and could only find alternative sources. Our media are not telling the truth about what has happened and what is happening to the Iraqi people and to the soldiers who've gone there. The footage horrifies me, the ignorance of the American people disappoints me, and the illegal activities of my own government anger me.
Thank you for the links you supplied. The first one, that video, brought me to tears, some of sorrow and the rest of extreme anger at the beasts, that conspired to start that illegal war by voting for it.Every member of that Bush cabinet should be forcefully exposed to that poison from hell,so that they can die the same agonizing death as these innocent victims. And they should be forced to see live the pain and misery they caused with their unforgivable criminality. The other two are more of a technical nature, which gives the authenticity to the stories. From where I sit north of the border,I can euphemistically speaking, see the forest, because my view is not obstructed by the trees. And there seems to be a very bad disease in the forest I see.I hope the healthy trees can be saved by getting rid of the ones infected by a seemingly incurable disease.

3. The number of buildings turned to dust by 2 planes on 9/11/01.
2. The number of planes that vaporized on 9/11.
1. The number of times the above two things have ever happened in the history of the universe.
Actually, all four planes vaporized. It's also the first time two planes pierced through two steel-frame buildings like butter. Amazing! But whatever. Just keep bringing it up--the official story is absolute nonsense, and I'm more interested in getting that word out than dithering with the details.

We blew the shit right back up their own ass
And out their fucking ears.
It works.
We blew the shit out of them.
They suffocated in their own shit!
Hallelujah.
Praise the Lord for all good things.
We blew them into fucking shit.
They are eating it.
Praise the Lord for all good things.
We blew their balls into shards of dust,
Into shards of fucking dust.
We did it.
Now I want you to come over here and kiss me on the mouth.

Referring to Ghandighost below, you are thinking along the same lines as I have thought for 10 years now. The tear in the fabric of science and logic that 9/11 represents is, in my, quite informed opinion I should say, is the seminal event of the first part of the 21st century. Not the invasion of Iraq, but 9/11 itself.
I have realised that since I first saw it live on TV as it was happening: 250,000 tons of concrete and steel were disintegrating in their own footprint in a cloud of powdery dust. Every law of physics, from molecular bonding to gravitational energy and laws of resistance to free-fall per Newton's Laws, the tensile properties of steel beams nearly a foot thick disappearing into thin air, was being repealed in front of my very eyes by the fiat of humans. Nature had no part in it. Nature was NOT violating its own fundamental laws. Or I was witnessing a new order of laws that had not yet been announced to the world but were now being announced by this spectacular visual experiment.
Very few understand the visceral meaning and sense of the above paragraph, especially coming from a trained physicist and mathematician like myself. It seems that you may be one of them. The mass of "ordinary people", especially those who are literarily erudite but quite innumerate and anti-science, a consequence of a "liberal arts" education, including thousands of readers and commentators of CD, this ENORMOUS event is a footnote in the grand scheme of things. For them the, the poli-science jargon and political chase of the “grand chessboard”, Brzezinski, Kissinger, oil, greed and whatnot are the determinants of history. They think that physical events are simply things that happen by "chance" having no consequence for the course of that history. While they would protest belief in the supernatural, they implicitly accept super- naturalness as routine and dismiss the greatest televised violation of the laws of science in the history of humankind as “one of those things."
I am not using “supernatural” in its traditional hocus pocus sense of religion and spirituality. I mean it in the sense of the breaking fundamental, mathematical laws of science. Consequent to 9/11, I have been forced to conclude that large masses of humans are simply no good at being able to discern a completely new phenomenon taking place in front of their eyes from what they believe to be a “trick “. For example, if we were to assemble the average, mentally dull masses of America on a field and were to demonstrate a flying elephant, only some would realise that a fundamental law of science had been broken. Most would dismiss it, in their usual simplistic cocksure way that it is a "trick" or "mass hallucination" without giving any thought to the agency that was able to bring about the "trick". This is especially true of "practical", "hardnosed", "feet-on-the ground" people, such as business people and Republicans.
Having come to realize this aspect of human nature vis-a-vis the yet, logically unexplained, 9/11 violations of the laws of physics including the most fundamental law of conservation of mass/energy evinced by Building 7, which decided to fall by itself though no plane struck it, I explain the American masses’ ignorant, non-challant, cynical attitudes as simply coping methods in the face of overwhelming and frightening strangeness. It is the self-preservation mechanism of the human brain to escape reality when it terrorizes you or shakes your beliefs to the point of insanity. The mind envelopes the mystery in a cocoon of cynicism and sarcasm such as "conspiracy theory" as a soporific.
Unfortunately, one of the leaders of this innumerate and unscientific literati is Fisk himself, who, to preserve his own sanity or hide what he knows, coined the derogatory epithet of the "truthers" for those of us who were stunned by the unexplainable science of the phenomena on 9/11. Truthers have been relegated to the ranks of “conspiracy” cranks. Yet Fisk now wants us to be surprised and mournful at the devastation that has been wrought in Iraq and in Afghanistan par 9/11. He wants us to mourn the loss of order in Iraq resulting from the fall of a tyrant, who though vicious, was a capable administrator, and be upset with the Anglo-American hegemony that made Iraq into a mess that only a 100 year rule by Saddam could have accomplished. That is, the Anglo-American hegemony that made the most educated and secular Arab country in the ME into a sectarian hellhole is a tyranny whose arrogance, inhumanity and incompetence makes Caligula look like Santa Claus
Americans cannot wrap their mind around the notion that their tyranny is much more evil and cruel than that of Saddam Hussein because it is the same mindset that cannot wrap its mind around the phenomena of 9/11. Nevertheless, I have also come to realize that this is not an American condition alone. It is the human condition. The brain-minds of humans have not evolved to grasp such profound and gigantic events. In this milieu, I am sceptical of the mob democracy of America, since it is a reckless giant loose on the world with enormous destructive military and economic power that it finds pleasure in using to inflict pain on life on Earth like a particularly psychopathic child chopping a frog’s legs. Nor do I have much faith in the American "people." Therefore, the world is in for a decade of American destructiveness until it exhausts itself economically and in human capacity.
Still, I believe that if 9/11 were revisited with a focus by truthful scientists the world over, the human race may be weaned off its torpor and enter into the domain of the intellect and out of the domain of brute force.
Remember it was Sadaam Hussein who was telling the world and the American people about the WMD's in Iraq. It was the criminal Bush administration that lied. To this day the gullible, ignorant, intellectually lazy, mindlessness American population doesn't even consider these obvious truth's. To expect the same American to consider alternative thoughts about 9/11 and the USG involvement by allowing it to happen, at the very least, is patently ridiculous. The USA is a country of the mindlessness, the inability to discern or to know to discern, thoughts, including the thoughts of others, from fact or truth. Mindlessness is institutionalized by government propaganda, business ads, and pretend christians with false doctrines thereby giving mindlessness legitimacy. The evidence can be realized on TV, daily, hourly, by the minute.
The fact that Bush's brother held the insurance on all those buildings, the fact that building 7 was never attacked ,and that bulding 7 held all the pertenant criminal material against several big players ,that would have gone to jail had the cases been able to go to trial, and the way the buildings fell, tells anyone there is too much room for doubt,to not think something more than just the terrorist on the planes was going on, is a person closing their mind, so as to not see the reallity, that would bring them too much pain. It is allot like a Mother of a Molested child, doing nothing to stop it, and pretending nothing is going on, because it would be to painful to admit, your husband was a peice of garbage, and your childs life has been ruined.
I do believe our Country betrayed us all, in the worst way possible,by being involved in attacking us...that hurts...that is hard to swallow, but until we do, we will continue to lie to ourselves to feel better, yet like a boil festering ,eventually the pressure must be released.
I physically talked to the Coroner in Penn. and the reporter that was on the scene, and they both told me, to believe what my heart tells me, but that they were sworn to secrecy by the U.S. Goverment. and could not discuss the issue ever.
If the people could just realize that we are victoms of the corruption, then we could stop being part of the corruption.
reasonisreligion, thanks for this comment.
Thanks also to Elizabeth H [12:09 pm] for "... Amazing! But whatever. Just keep bringing it up--the official story is absolute nonsense, and I'm more interested in getting that word out than dithering with the details." And elsewhere, "... When it pleases him, even Chomsky will have you believe that the rich and powerful are just fumbling around making stupid mistakes. If you suggest maybe they're actually planning, you get called a conspiracy theorist."
It's a refreshing change of pace from the plodding, dogmatic Trutherphobes who gather like incontinent vultures over this question to bury intelligent skepticism under a dense and incessant "junk shot" of their credulous, tendentious intellectual excrement.
REASON: Thank you for the elaborate post. There are a few pro-establishment "types" who argue in favor of the "official story," and one or more of them makes claims to being an engineer. So it's good to see you here to deconstruct arguments from a similar background.
About a year ago CD published an article that led to the longest comment discussion I've ever noticed. It went to over 900 posts! The thread was a virtual war between those who questioned the official 911 story-line for any number of reasons, and took in an equal number of analytical angles; and those there to obfuscate, counter, or derail the discussion at every turn. The latter claimed the moral highground arguing that the rest of us were misinformed truthers or otherwise flawed in our thought processes.
As a writer, I look for the most likely storyline. If a government makes a fortune on killing, then it will cultivate a pretense to kill. Such a government is not one that I would find myself easily trusting. I also factor in the legacy of those heavy mysteries still suspended in our midst, such as the death of JFK and Martin. In such a nexus, I view the official storytellers as guilty (or at least suspect) until proven innocent.
Another relevant case in point is the actual content of the Gulf waters versus what the "authorities" are telling us about it... as if the unfortunate incident, all plugged up and handled is now of no consequence.
That Gulf thing will come back, and bite them in the ass...that oil is there, and it will show up, and keep killing the life in the Gulf, and Obama and his gang are going to keep loosing everyones faith in them. I doubt he see's a second term...
Hi Rose,
"There are a few pro-establishment "types" who argue in favor of the "official story," and one or more of them makes claims to being an engineer."
Thank God those "types" are here. I just cannot imagine any discussion of value where all participants were preaching to their own choir. ......
As to who they claim to be...(Physicians,Engineers,Lawyers,School Teachers, Combat Veterans, etc. etc.) I simply except that is who they are.(Or what they do) We had an individual who had the audacity to claim he was a carpenter!! lol This is the internet and we can never be sure who is offering an opinion (informed or otherwise) on these comment forums.But...everybody gets to dance.
As to the many opinions expressed concerning the horrible events of 9/11 I have chosen to remain largely silent except where issues concerning the victims of that horrible day in September were concerned. I have never attempted to articulate a coherent position as to the causes relative to the effects observed regarding the collapse of the buildings themselves. To articulate such a position (according to the standards required by many here at CD) would require what would amount to a mini dissertation. (At least for me)
But..At this time I will say (without the mini dissertation) that I have never accepted the official narrative of the events regarding the murder of thousands of innocent victims on that September day in New York City. Nor do I accept the official "authoritative" narrative on the catastrophic oil spill on the Gulf coast.I also do not except the official narratives regarding Iraq, Afghanistan, the Financial crises...etc. etc.(I here mean to be suggestive and certainly not exhaustive in the narratives I do not except.) Government and business are corrupted beyond repair.......Nothing they issue as "authoritative explanation" can be trusted at face value.
Great to see you are still writing here at CD Rose. I still read all your comments.
Thomas Gilbert
PS.. Great comment by Reason..
Excellent! This piece is for the achieves.
The following is perhaps the only sentence, in your otherwise luminous piece, I would quibble with:
"Nevertheless, I have also come to realize that this is not an American condition alone. It is the human condition." –(reasonisreligion)
While it is clearly unarguable that this condition is by no means uniquely American, please believe me that I can attest to the fact, that what you admirably describe is indeed, while not indigenous, disproportionately an affliction of Americans, and not a generalized axiom of the larger "human condition."
America is indeed unique in many ways, and in certain types of ignorance, it remains abundantly regnant, far ahead of the curve.
This almost conditional failure is not entirely attributable to their lack of scientific or mathematical acumen, but rather to their ignorant willingness to remain 'isolates' in a world that they have a difficult part imagining even exists– apart from their brutal, unrepentant solipsism. In fact, Americans insist on their ability to cognitively 'disjoin' reality, and with inordinate pride.
My point is moot and does not bear argument, but is only deduced from experiential factors. Having lived in many different countries and experienced at first hand the many variegations of the human condition, it is almost certain that a generalized, 'one size fits all' does not exist. Certainly, explicitly 'cognitive' proclivities of the brain to perceive– factor in with the equally critical cultural dispensations, to grasp 'reality.'
You would be selling Americans short when you suggest that in some things, their ignorance is not sui generis. It is in no way part of a fictive 'human condition' determined by a neurological determinism.
–Kim
Very good and very true. Unfortunately the only thing you couldn't provide us with is how to stop this mind-set of the American idiot. If you can, please do...
I feel the same, and am frustrated by the fact that our "Leaders" are so Stupid and violent in their ways, and the average guy is so polluted with what they are supposed to believe, that they seem unpenatrable, unable to see what is right in front of their faces. How can we show them ?
Good post, reasonisreligion. I'd like to add a bit of armchair analysis. You finish with "Still, I believe that if 9/11 were revisited with a focus by truthful scientists the world over, the human race may be weaned off its torpor and enter into the domain of the intellect and out of the domain of brute force."
You know, those exploding buildings and nonexistent planes and the rest don't look right to anybody, scientist or not, but those who will not believe their eyes are instead believing the scientists--not the ones who have spoken out against the official version, but that great majority who have remained silent or have actually defended the government's nonsense. People just can't fathom that untold numbers of trained scientists and mathematicians didn't make the impossiblilities of the official story abundantly clear. Scientists aren't liars, they can't be!
The scientific community failed us, by and large. They said 2+2=5. They turned out to be the same grubbers as the rest of us, willing to say whatever to keep their jobs. And notice, these days they don't have much sway. If you want to know if climate change is real, poll the populace. And boldly pronounce that nature has cleansed the Gulf of oil, why not? It's not what's real--because who's to say? It's what you decide you want to believe, and damn, doesn't that reduce us to brutes.
As for the rhetorical chicanery of the news media, I'll save my ire for another time. Or not. Lots has been written on that.
Reason,
Excellent Post. Thank you.
" it is the same mindset that cannot wrap its mind around the phenomena of 911 ". True. So many Americans cannot accept the logic of the truth of 911, because it is beyond their comprehension that the American Government would be capable of such an extraordinary evil act. There is just no way they can believe that our Government would murder almost 3,000 of its own citizens for nefarious reasons. It reminds me of my Grandfather after his wife passed away. He was flattered by a gold digger half his age. We tried to tell him she would wipe out his bank account ( which she did ) and only loved his money, but his response was: " I cannot think about her that way ". Perspicacious post, reasonisreligion.
As I keep saying over and over...wherever the US goes (or has been), shit is sure to follow. And Iraq is no exception.
Hidden somewhere in my library is a book by the engineer who oversaw the building of the Panama Canal describing this great feat.
He noted that with the USA guaranteeing Panama's independence, the only nation Panama needed to fear was - the USA.
"wherever the US goes (or has been), shit is sure to follow." –(Vera Gottlieb)
–Shit and blood, shit and blood.
First the blood, then the shit.
A censure of the entire human race.
The famous IPAT equation says amount of destruction is in proportion to population multiplied by affluance multipled by technology. This is true especially for the USA both locally, globally, and especially in all aspects of its wars, as the leader of industrial civilisation. Lets just call this Consuming Civilisation. (CC)
IPAT says that the most fortunate human beings in the history of CC are also the most destructive. The USA would of course claim they are the noblest and most democratic, but their waste tastes the same as everyone elses, and their is more of it. Our CC normal way of life eats up resources, and adds waste and carbon emissions to plague the globe for millenium.
With the glorification of war by the CC, IPAT adds the affluance and technology to war and has given us the great human wasters of herbicides, depleted Uranium, the cluster bomblets, drones, missiles and nuclear weapons. Great wealth is used to lay to waste all others with permanent effects. These are not just war crimes, they are the crimes of hell. Turning the earth into hell makes our CC the agency of evil, fully active and aware. There are no excuses other than total depravity.
Without using a single weapon, there are great environmental costs and corruption in fueling, feeding, housing and transporting the global military empire every day. Every day the great evil must patrol its territories, every foot, sea and air soldier fully packed and ready to inflict violence. Every day the generators must burn oil, keep the air conditioners going to avoid adaption to the climes of its conquests, and engines power the monstrous vehicles of the clones of the empire. Corporations fly their accolytes around the world in airplanes to supervise the processing of the environment.
In their homes the wealthy CC have become a consuming culture, to imbibe the rationales of continuing the empire for global production and consumption. Education for the next generation is a dangerous business, as ever more facts about the deteriorating environment and government corruption must be denied, and government lies must be upheld, so education itself must be denied to many. The mass media has become a mass of intellectual compost which buries the simple truths. The culture of CC is the beast of destruction.
The empire of CC will die as the flow of resources to consume must become less than that which can sustain it. The power and reach of CC, and its ability to re-source from anywhere, indicates that when the critical resources finally run out, and climate change is out of control, there will be very little of anything left. Then all the military and nuclear weapons in the world will not be enough to resurrect it, and their will be not enough left to fight over.
Entropy says we live in Humpty Dumpty world, and there is only one direction, and a very hard floor.
Many thanks to the commentators below (obedient Servant, Sioux Rose, VasHar Kim and others) who responded with pithy phrase and intellectual insight to my post. It is good to have thoughtfull discussion on a topic that the PTB have attempted to bury under a mountain of prevarication and totalitarian suppression of facts.
While the American mindset is,in the heartlands, peculiarly and virulently anti-intellectual and bellicose, perhaps from its puritanical Christian fundamentalism,my moniker of "reasonisreligion" comes from decades of observation of the human mind across cultures and from our fast emerging neuroscientific understanding of the brain and its evolutionary history, that human religions are deadly wasters of our innate Natural gift for communication and sharing. Agrarian religion, which degenerated from a closeness with Nature in ancient Egypt to elaborate supernatural myths enforced by priesthoods with the help of brute force, alienated humans from natural evolution to regimented societies obedient to authority without question and exploitative of Nature. 2500 years of such social conditioning, passed on from generation to generation by brainwashing children in their first five years establsihes certain brain architectures that are extremely difficult to change in later years, even with high levels of monodimensional education. What we have today throughout the world in varying degrees is the hegemony of male brute force, often supported by language crafts of religion and aristo-plutocacy.
A wise man observed nearly a century ago that it is difficult to reason with those who take authority as truth rather than truth as authority.
I don't know how to wean societies that are willing to kill others on the diktat of authority from such predilection. All I can say is that I see hope in the flowering of Nature consciousness among many young and old and rejection of authority that justifies wanton destruction of nature and other humans on religious, political and economic pretexts. Whether this flowering will proceed evolutionarily, which means a very slow process if we ever survive the coming war or wars where I fear nuclear weapons will be used, or whether there is sudden, revolutinary jump in human consciousness among a sufficiently large and coherent group of humans remains to be seen. The evolutionary history of brain that I have mulled over in the last several years tells me that human brain architectures have made sudden jumps. It is not the size of the brain. Argument on the basis of cranial size are moot, I believe because Neandertahls with larger cranial space were with Homo Sapiens very recently (30,000 years ago), but did not survive. HS did not kill them, which is itself a fact of great importance to understanding our innate nature.
Also, we now know that human language is a unique species capacity which is hardwired in that it is a syntax producing machine. But meaning (or semantics)comes from the concept, emotional, numerical and logical faculties which are separate. Consequently, after tens of thousands of years of only oral communication, writing emerged suddenly in human society for no genetic or evolutionary reasons.
Writing is that incredible leap into higher knowledge and generational transfer of knowledge. It occurred almost simultaneously in Mesopotamia and Egypt recently in eveolutionary time, about 4500 years ago. So it is possible that a large number of human psyche may get tired of permanent killing fields and jump to a shared humanity, as result of an internal or external massive shock. The Universe is huge and we are not masters of the universe.
Peace
p.s. Two and a half million Iraqis mostly Sunnis are displaced in Syria, Jordan etc. Two million more have been internally displaced. Baghdad, a mostly Sunni city is now mostly Shiite but for all of those who have been able to survive the Shia ethnic cleansing which we euphemistically called, "the Surge" there will be scores to settle. Yipee, "We won."
And the next war is around the corner, because the anit-terrorist military industrial complex trillion dollar gold rush is in full throttle.
As a victim of the United Stazi of America," or what I call the legal gang stalking nation wide spy network, that the 800000 private contractor analysts of fear mongering in Watchington preside over, for 3 years 24/7," I can tell you that our country has been hijacked by war mongering empirical thugs , and this gravy train will be protected if they have to kill , or institutionalize everyone that gets in the way.
There is no shortage of stupid , hero wannabe , 4th amendment stomping unconstitutional idiots in this country who think they are protecting our way of life by spying, following, stalking, and destroying innocent Americans who dare to use freedom of speech.
They are morons. And there puppet masters are criminals.
And apparently , it pays to spy on your neighbors, and create suspects from anti-war peace activists, anti-government tea party activists, gun owners, and anyone who talks poorly about America, because we are not creating any jobs.
Welcome to the United Stazi of America,,,,
I owe, I owe, its off to war we go.
Actually, AIPAC dictates our Middle East policy.
De-Countrify Israel Now and force Zionists to pay Reparations.

Bornfreemen ,,, I can only hope that the next round of Wkikleaks details how to build a stazi network of spys in Iraq modeled after the stazi spy network in American..
Then, and only then will the proverbial constitutional shit hit the fan, because if all of America knew what I know, there would be some very serous ass kicking of the United Stazi of America.
Because real patriotic constitutional loving Americans , will not let the Stazi have their spy torture network.
If you are a stazi torture spy prick , you need to get out , or start looking over YOUR shoulder, because constitutional justice is coming.
