Firing McChrystal Is Not Enough
It's not enough to fire General McChrystal for his latest public act of insubordination. It's time to fire the entire Afghanistan strategy. How can Congress possibly appropriate an additional $33 billion to a General who does not believe in the mission, the Commander-in-Chief or the administration officials he so obviously holds in contempt? The answer is obvious: it can't.
There are two possible explanations for this latest McChrystal rip at
the Obama administration in the soon-to-be-released issue of Rolling
Stone: either he is out of control, cracking under the pressure of
a failure with his name all over it, or he has decided he needs to
engage in a new round of media manipulation to weaken the hands of the
administration figures he disdains and blames for setbacks to his
strategy. Either way, the President needs to fire McChrystal now. But he
also needs to recognize that this latest debacle is further evidence
that it is time to fundamentally change course. If he is unwilling to do
so, Congress needs to say "no" to the administration's $33 billion
Supplemental Appropriation request when it hits the floor of the House
this week or next.
McChrystal's closest advisors speak openly in the article that they do not believe the war in Afghanistan is winnable. Here is how McChrystal's Chief of Operations told Rolling Stone's Michael Hastings that the war in Afghanistan is going to end: "'It's not going to look like a win, smell like a win or taste like a win' said Major General Bill Mayville, 'This is going to end in an argument.'"
As Hastings writes: "So far, counterinsurgency has succeeded only in creating a never-ending demand for the primary product supplied by the military: perpetual war." And that is what key figures in the military have in mind, notwithstanding the president's commitment to begin withdrawing US troops in July of next year. According to a senior military official in Kabul: "There is a possibility that we could ask for another surge of US forces next summer if we see success here."
Another surge? Without a clear exit strategy from Afghanistan - and 96 Members of Congress are demanding one by co-sponsoring legislation sponsored by Jim McGovern in the House - senior military leaders are conducting operations in Afghanistan as if escalation, not withdrawal, could very well be in the cards. And why not? McChrystal backed the administration down before, why not again?
McChrystal began his campaign of public pressure on the Obama administration by leaking his demand for 40,000 additional troops to Bob Woodward of the Washington Post when President Obama was reviewing his war policy. Then there was the public repudiation of Vice President Biden and his preferred strategy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. When asked if he could support a presidential decision to rely on a counterterrorism approach to defeating al Qaeda in Afghanistan, as Vice President Biden advocated, McChrystal replied "The short, glib answer is no."
McChrystal publicly threatened insubordination if the Obama administration did not toe the line and give him exactly what he was demanding. It worked: he not only kept his job, he got everything that he wanted.
Where has McChrystal's strategy led us? What he once described as a "model" operation in Marja, General McChrystal now describes as "a bleeding ulcer." The Pentagon's latest quarterly report to Congress on the war confirms that the insurgency in Afghanistan is expanding its operations and increasing in sophistication. Efforts to strengthen the Afghan National Army have been stymied by "high attrition and low retention" of recruits. Meanwhile, according to the Pentagon report, the insurgency has a steady and growing supply of fighters: "A ready supply of recruits is drawn from a frustrated population where insurgents exploit poverty, tribal friction and a lack of governance to grow their ranks."
McChrystal has become increasingly worried about the consequences of Americans paying attention to the failing war. A Senior Advisor to McChrystal told Rolling Stone, "If Americans pulled back and started paying attention to this war, it would become even less popular."
Exactly.
Congress needs to pay attention. They can start by heeding the advice of Andrew Wilder of Tufts University, who told Hastings that handing over the cash McChrystal wants for his failing operation in Afghanistan will only make things worse: "Throwing money at the problem only exacerbates the problem."
It's time to stop the manipulation, the insubordination and the military dreams of endless war in Afghanistan. Fire McChrystal and then fire the strategy.Comments

Show AllFire the general and impeach Obama and his staff for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Right on.... DO IT !
Bahahahahah... Yesterday we talked about Pass-Out Petraeus, and today we have To-Hell-With-This McChrystal.
Awesome!
And the nuts in the White House / Pentagon insane asylums want to attack Iran... Real smart, boys, real smart.
Jack Kane--You may be closer than you think. An Iranian news source reported that a US aircraft Carrier along with a large number of US navy ships AND ISRAELI ships passed through the Suez Canal a couple days ago. I personally think the Russians have warned the Israelis and also the US not to attack Iran, and I can only hope this is more of the usual psychological pressure against Iran. Stupid accidents can happen that blow up into a shooting war. Luckily we don't have that idiot Cheney trying to precipitate a war any more. If a decision is made to attack Iran, the tip off will be that all the e-mail systems will be shut down on the Navy ships. A potential attack can't be kept secret from the crews and they wouldn't want anyone back home to hear about it in advance. One other tip off would be that the price of oil stock suddenly shoots out of sight because all the insiders will be buying. That was one of the reasons that crude went out of sight in summer,2008. It dropped when Bush told the Israelis we wouldn't attack Iran or help them. One of the few smart things that war criminal did right.
This is a very serious story and it sounds like your on top of it. The only thing I can't figure out is why it has't already happened.
Can you say the Gulf of Tonkin?
Yep I heard about the ships. Gulf of Tonkin was the first thought on my mind, too (the next one was 'Remember Da Maine!'). I doubt the US army in its current condition can take another front. The nuts may end up using nukes. From there on we can only extrapolate.
May cool heads prevail.
The strategy is to "project military power to every corner of the earth and using American capital and markets to force global economic integration on its own terms." Read BLOWBACK by Chambers Johnson.
Be careful what you hope for. If we pull out of Afghanistan, look for chaos in the Caucuses, as they are the only other route for the pipelines to the Caspian oil/gas deposits that don't go thru Russia or Iran. That, of course, is why we're in Af/Pak, for the TAPI pipeline. I mean, despite the talk about "Al Qaeada" (possibly 1 or 2 hundred in the N.E. province, Wasiristan) our "surge" troops went to Helmund province in the south to guard the pipeline route... Of course, if we developed domestic, green energy none of this would a be concern.
Yes, fire McChrystal, end the illegal occupation, and ban the Clintons from politic office.
"... the war in Afghanistan is going to end: "'It's not going to look like a win, smell like a win or taste like a win"
That's the good news.
Read the RS piece. McChrystal's prior insubordination was frankly, worse than this, and it wasn't the first time, but he skated anyway. Obama fire a general? That would take balls.
Obama was "good" at campaigning. He's completely adrift as a President. Seemingly without a clue. Maybe that's what we get now: campaign antics every 4 years, while back in DC a permanent government establishment runs everything. That would make Obama what I have been calling him for awhile now - a lawn jockey on the White House lawn.
McChrystal just resigned. Good riddance, torturer!
He offered his resignation. I don't believe it has been accepted yet. We'll see if Obama looks for a compromise or if he can convincingly and effectively deal with face to face conflict and insubordination...
Tom Andrews takes the rolling stones article out of context. Each and every quote cited here is misquoted from the original meaning, and is geared to a predisposed slant on the War, Obama, and the Military.
Read the Article, its posted right here on Common Dreams in the left column under "Runaway General".
I don't want the war, or any war. But this is inflammatory, and not a good use of journalism or CD.
I also find it interesting that Obama's name is still red-lined as misspelled by Spell-Check.
No, firing is not enough; court-martial might come close. He takes a paycheck doesn't he, people salute him right? If he doesn't agree with his employer, his commander, or his role in his job, LIKE EVERYONE ALL OF THE REST OF US WORKING SLOBS, he needs to go, but this is a bit more serious.
If the new funding request is approved, there should be a tax on gas to pay for it. Let people pay for the war and programs for returning service members on that installment plan instead of just putting a magnet on their SUV or the financial monkey on the backs of the next generation, and then they can truly say they "support" our troops.
Then, if people feel like paying $2 per gallon extra instead of $1 per gallon, then that would pay for a "surge" (oh, I mean escalation...)
Right on. Actually, the main point of the continuing US occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq is to provide cover for the transfer of millions of taxpayer dollars into the pockets of private corporations, such as Halliburton and Blackwater.
We cant stand the thought of giving this country back to the people who were running it, the Taliban.
But , when we were supporting the Taliban while they were fighting Russia, it was just fine that they won their country back from the occupying nation.
Wow, were going broke, just like Russia did, fighting the Taliban.
I cant say anything but, bring our soldiers home and let the Taliban have their country back, they earned it.
They will clean house, get rid of the drug lords and war lords, and the terrorists.
I think they learned their lesson, and so did we.
Obama, like Bush before him, is fatally addicted to the "concept" of victory. Victory, of course, is impossible but the "concept" of victory, like the "concept" for a really lousy Hollywood movie, is not. What Obama will eventually be looking for (though he is not looking for it right now) are enough fiery gasoline explosions, fast cuts and high speed car chases that will bamboozle the gleefully uninformed American public into believing that we achieved victory in Afghanistan. During Vietnam this was called "the decent interval". What this new, updated flim flam will be called under Obama is not clear. Never fear, however, an army of PR MoFo's under Obama's direct command is looking for a euphemism right now. Obama, like George Wanker Bush, still desperately wants to be a hero. Thousands will die for that narcissistic dream. What a bunch of effing killer klowns all these people are!
Anything that mc chrystal has said about obama's lack of stature and inexperience is absolutely correct. while I hate the concept of endless war that is mcchrystal's mantra, i think his forthrightness and candor are admirable. he knows that obama is out of his league as president; he probably lost respect for obama when he was able to leak with impunity the documents that refuted biden's viewpoint on the war.
mcchrystal's war crimes and various intigues are legion; after all, he was rumsfeld's and cheney's boy. naive obama knew his whole history of lying, torturing, and murdering, and despite that (or, maybe, because of that) made mcchrystal his chief his warrior in chief in the middle east. obama's a loser. any good democrat could give him a run for his money in the 2012 primaries. they all ought to be headed to new hampshire right now.
They did not call McChrystal - the Assasin for nothing.
Firing McChrystal, or McChrystal's resignation isn't enough. It's Obama's own damned fault for appointing him to head up our whole Afghanistan "mission" in the first place. Obama was playing with fire, and he knew it.
Erroll writes

To good to be true..
But Emmanual resigning, the generals in a shakeup,
something is happening here, what it is ain't exactely
clear, better stop clildren ,what's that sound.....
I is too unreal to believe that Obama is sobering up,
so I would more assume it has something to do with
the Persian Gulf, remember, Augest deadline for
Iraq reclaiming their aerospace.
Oh, come on.
Why should McChrystal want to take the fall for 0bama's scam?
If a country enters a war for fraudulent reasons, it cannot get the results it expects. Obviously, then, neither 0 nor McC nor the next uniformed suit 0 sends down to run PR for murder will bring home the victory 0 promised.
0 having it out with his generals over military matters? Theatre. 0 does not really have a military goal. He wants it to be a general's fault in 2010 and 2012

McC's "plan" is/has been obviously NG.
How was it sold to him?
This is no defense.
In this time of failure on all levels,it's obvious:....
The US military, executive, congress, senate, judiciary,
and treasury(Financial) barracudas are eating their own.
This is good.
It means the post WWII "Star Trek" star-timers are finished.
Start a new life yesterday... your last July 4th is 12 daze away.
This is pure, unadulterated parody.
The US is a parody.
Many US citizens walk and talk with confidence.
It is pure unadulterated parody.
Even a child would understand that they should be ashamed of themselves.
But these deaths?
God, it is all such an ugly joke!
It is time to fire the USA.
Truly; one war criminal/ mass murderer, pardons, or comes down on another....means NOTHING! Fascist amerika continues continues on its slide into the abyss of failed empires !
Does anybody really think Obama is going to fire this guy?
I have a hard time even taking the idea seriously.
Obama has a very limited set of tools in his leadership box, and we've seen them all. I'd bet $1000 all that happens is they have their private meeting, and in the end Obama magnanimously chooses the "higher road" and keeps the general right where he is, saying all is forgiven and that we need to move "forward" (Familiar, anyone?)
We need to remove the smell of BO from the Oval Office.
If McChrystal keeps his job, it means that a military coup has overtaken our country. This is also why we are still in Afghanistan -- because the military wants us there, the military and its weapons building military industrial complex. It has finally happened here. Serious dissent will not be allowed. Try it and see.
This was done long ago.
Clearly so.
What is not clear is why this is not recognised even on this site.
My guess is the US citizenry is decadent.
The late Joseph Stalin knew what to do with generals who even thought about insubordination.
Historians and others have accused Stalin of allowing his paranoia to push him into destroying the command structure of Soviet Armed Forces, and this when war was obviously coming. There is much truth in this.
But you have to agree that Stalin was very clear on the principle of civilian control of the military. he did not hesitate to punish any form of insubordiantion, often with a death sentence.
A death sentence or a sentence of penal servitude in the Alaskan North for Mccrystal is not a solution open to Obama. But he should impose the most severe punishment he has at his disposal -- immediate dismissal and reduction in rank -- on McCrystal. And he must do it right away.
If Obama fails to assert his authority, he is complicit in undermining the most basic principle of the American Constitution, and will thus be betraying his oath of office.
...or he's volunteering to take the fall.
He'll be fine - like Colin Powell - a few months' vacation somewhere quiet, a small confession, and a career as consultant in the arms industry or diplomacy. Maybe even a death-bed epiphany, like Al Haig. What could go wrong?
It's just a career move, people. SOP.
Bring America Back !!!!
**The Commander In Chief's Afghan strategem, and his victorious political campaign is and was based upon "W" Bush' not going after the right caves in order to wipe out the Evil Dragon Osama bin Laden !! Ergo, we now have
Obama's Drone Crusade to Tora Bora !!
**This strategem is based on Team Obama's hook, line, and
sinker acceptance that the cave-dwelling dragon and 19
airline pilot school flunkouts pulled off the technical
genius which was 9/11 !! At least they are good at pretending they fell for the Neocon party line, and
meanwhile, several Detainee Patsies at Gitmo--waterboarded
several hundred times each, are now claiming to have masterminded 9/11, and demand their reward of eternal salvation and their 70 virgins in Islam heaven !
**Obama can always pull an "LBJ" and admit he was lied to
by his Generals, and by the five sided puzzle palace (Pentagon). Grand Osama is a figment of the imagination of the Fox TV war cheerleaders, and their Neocon Zionist backers who just itch for the power to get into Iran !!
Get out of Iraq; Get out of Afghan'; Stay out of Iran !!!!
This is all theatre! Do not believe what you hear/read...
McChrystal has been in charge of Afghanistan for over a year -
WikiLeaks will soon post the classified film of the bombing of Granai village in Afghanistan, May 2009 that killed ~140 civilians, including ~92 children, when the US Military dropped 500lb and 1,000lb bombs on them.

Speaking truth to power is too important to be left to such outdated methods. We are all complicit in the actions of our democratically mandated government and as Ghandi once observed, "coercive power, legitimate or otherwise, depends on the co-operation, on the obedience and support, on the assent or at least passive tolerance of many people"
Constitutional US lawyer Glenn Greenwald outlined recently how "the Obama administration's assault on whistleblowers is more extreme than any prior administration, including the Bush administration". Greenwald pointed out that the US security establishment is deeply concerned with how the release of footage highlighting civilian casualties damages people's trust in their government's prosecution of the war.

We shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free - from the hands of the warmongering bastards who would have the US spend a trillion dollars a year on the military industrial complex. For many years, they have been using lies, violence, fear & intimidation to keep the war machine alive. It's time for truth, diplomacy, and peace. The Pentagon is falling. Soon, all the pentagon's horses and all of their men won't be able to get them in power again. The corrupt world economic system that treats some like royalty while pissing on billions of people is ending now too. Don't worry, we'll build a good economic system that works for everyone, except for those who are too greedy.
