Preventing Both an Iranian Nuclear Weapon and War
The risk of war with Iran has increased. The US rejection of the nuclear swap arranged by Brazil and Turkey, the recent arrival of Israeli and American nuclear armed submarines in the Persian Gulf, Obama's exclusion of Iran from previous agreements that nuclear states would not use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states, the impending doubling of US carrier task forces in the Gulf, and the upgrading of an U.S. airbase in Afghanistan 30 km from the Iranian border -- all signal or increase the likelihood of an intentional or unintentional clash.
In addition, Israeli officials have said that if there was no progress in stopping Iran's uranium enrichment by this summer or fall, they would consider an attack. Since hardly a single Iran expert expects sanctions to stop Iran from enriching uranium, this redline moment is bound to arrive unless cooler heads prevail. The failure of the President or Congress to back an impartial UN investigation of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla events, assures Israel that the US would likewise treat an attack on Iran as "self-defense".
There is almost no media discussion of the inevitability of US forces being involved in the aftermath of an Israeli attack, or the price in lives and treasure we would pay (this raises a seemingly taboo subject, that Israel's and the United States' interests are not necessarily always identical). Lastly, Congress may well pass legislation which would cut gasoline supplies to Iran -- hurting civilians, forcing reformist Iranians to unite with the hardliners, and further increasing tensions.
How did we arrive at this tinderbox moment? Whether the risk of a disastrous war is 10% or 40%, what can we do to de-escalate and still move toward the goal of preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon?
As in the run-up to the Iraq war, the American mainstream media persist in presenting one "common wisdom" view about Iran, regardless of the real facts and options. As a result, most Americans do not know:
- that Iran's per capita military spending is miniscule compared to that of the US, Israel, and Turkey;
- that US intelligence and even some prominent Israeli leaders do not believe Iran would launch a suicidal attack on Israel;
- that the nuclear swap agreement with Brazil and Turkey, while not stopping enrichment, could prevent Iran from enriching uranium to 20% for its medical reactor and could establish a precedent of Iran sending its enriched uranium outside the country for conversion to fuel rods under tight international inspection;
- that Iran has repeatedly expressed interest in an international or capped enrichment program within Iran in return for intrusive inspections, which arms control experts say is the best insurance against a nuclear weapons program. This option seems far better than more futile sanctions, war, deterrence, or acceptance of an Iranian nuclear weapon;
- that Iran backs a nuclear weapons-free Middle East, which would require intrusive inspections in all participating countries if it is to work;
- that Middle East experts repeatedly point out that Iran and the U.S. have strong common interests in stabilizing Iraq and Afghanistan, which could save American and civilian lives and reduce our expenditures, if only there could be a nuclear agreement as well, and
- that indirectly or directly, an Israeli attack on Iran would endanger American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, de-stabilize those countries still further, increase terrorism recruitment, hike gas and food prices, depress our economy, and suck money and attention away from desperate needs here at home.
Perhaps the most important lasting solution, which might well have other benefits in the realm of peace-building, would be the establishment of a nuclear weapons-free, indeed a weapons of mass destruction-free, zone in the Middle East. Israel's unacknowledged nuclear arsenal of at least 200 warheads will likely not be disposed in any other, less comprehensive fashion. While we advocate the global elimination of nuclear weapons, ridding one of the world's most troubled regions of the world's worst weapons should be an urgent, near-term priority. The consensus report from last month's Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference called for a conference on a Middle East Nuclear Weapons Free Zone to be held in 2012. The U.S. complained, and Israel was mum, as it is not a party to the treaty, but both countries should seize the opportunity presented by this call, rather than continue to block progress toward this long-sought goal.
Here's what we can do to prevent a disastrous war with Iran, and still respect the security interests of all parties:
- Get informed: See further background

Iran/index.html - Don't miss any opportunity to explain the better solutions to the Iranian nuclear issue than sanctions or war;
- Stay alert to mainstream reports that leave out critical information or provide misleading information (an almost daily occurrence), and respond with letters to the Editor or call in, as appropriate;
- Call or write a personal letter to your Senators and Congress people, to counter their cave-in to unbalanced media reports or pressure groups.

Show AllThe authors of this article persist in doing what the rest of the corporate media does and that it to claim that Iran is intent upon developing a nuclear weapon. Iran has continually stated that they have no desire to do that and that their nuclear program will be used to harness and develop a nuclear energy program. Why should Israel and the United States be automatically taken at their word while they also engage in fear mongering and hysteria at the expense of Iran?
I agree with you that the media always frames the argument that Iran intends to develop nuclear weapons. I also hear Iran's pleas that their intentions are non-militarization of nuclear power.
HOWEVER, many of those in power, both in the US and Iran, are well-known to be lying, self-serving scum. So while I would like to believe the Iranian leaders, they are politicians and from experience, should be viewed as possibly being lying, self-serving scum.
Trust no-one.
"The risk of war with Iran has increased."
Ah, the passive voice. Doesn't assign responsibility...
sort of like dismissing everything reality based and making up shit to sell the next war plan.
Just like iraq. We've got many of the the same people driving us over a cliff.
The US government, Wall St., the elites, and the MSM are flat out Zionists. Get used to it.
Israel and Israeli interests come first.
America and the American people are to be used as cannon fodder and ATM's
for the lunatic State of Israel.
"How did we arrive at this tinderbox moment?"
Well, it started when oil was discovered in Iran, and deteriorated when the CIA overthrew their democratically elected president on behaf of Standard Oil and British Petroleum, installing a brutal half-witted dictator called "The Shah"
Throw in the fact that the Jews hate Iranians for being muslims, and the USA is Israel's trained yapping dog, and you get to where we are today.
Throw in the hypocracy if Israel having an illegal nuke stockpile, and Iran being permitted to develop nuclear power under the non-proliferation treaty, and the conditions for the ongoing US/Israel extermination of muslims is a done deal.
The 4 suggestions in the article are based on experience combatting a tremedously well-organized campaign which in effect dominates mainstream media and letters to Congress in order to support hard-right Israeli and American policies. There are 4 suggestions for action, not just the last cited, and they all relate to the wider public, not just peace people. The call to "get informed" includes a link to critical information that will allow antiwar people to be more effective advocates to the wider community, by giving them a positive option that respects the security of all parties. The second suggestion is to use this information to reach out, for instance at meetings of broad political or religious organizations. The third is to use the information on call-ins and Letters to the Editor to counter the pro-sanction or war groups. And the 4th (contacting Congress) is based on the experience of talking with Ohio Congressional staff, who say their mail on Iran from antiwar advocates is small compared to that of the hardliners, and that this affects their votes.
Threatening War with Iran is all Israel has to offer now.
I don't think they are prepared for the reply that Iran and other forces in the world would offer.
I say let the assholes do it, and let them find out what the consequences are going to be.
I think a lot of it is also geographic reality.
just say:
IF there is indeed an attack on Iran by Israel/USA...iran WILL be devastated - so devastated that so many people will die and suffer...and a number of cities and towns will be destroyed.
HOWEVER - whatever the unimaginable horror - especially with the USsupplied "bunker busters" and "small nuclear arms" -
it will take only a FEW hits from Iran - even with just conventional missiles and bombs out of the potential hundreds or thousands they can throw as a last ditch , all-out retaliation - to devastate what AMOUNTS To JUST A FEW cities of israel which are the ENTIRE reality of israel.
out of hundreds of missiles - a FEW are bound to hit the ISreali nuclear sites , producing a nuclear holocaust IN israel itself, and a FEW are bound to hit jerusalem, tel aviv, and beer-sheba.
these basically amount to EVERYTHING israel has as "advanced" civilization.
leaving IRAN - with its far vaster geography - with greater chance at survival for its people - who also outnumber the israelis.
Iran can SAY to the israelis -- the same thing that MAO said to the americans when americans floated the idea of attacking China in the 1960's...:
"WE CAN AFFORD to lose a few million -- can israel afford to lose her 6 million?"
as a variation of Mao's retort to americans:
"WE can afford to lose 300 million...can the americans afford to lose 300 million?"
Ehud Barak has stated that Iran is not a threat to Israel - even if it had nuclear weapons.

Finally remember the USS Liberty - Israel tried to deliberately sink a US ship and murder the crew.
So, try harder, Hasbara troll. You've got your work cut out for you. Israel has become a murderous, racist apartheid state, and the world now sees that.
Look. If Israel wants war between the USA and Iran, there will be war between the USA and Iran. Mossad/AIPAC blackmail will ensure this.
An eminently reasonable article advocating actions that alone will have no effect on the rogue nations Israel and the USA. As such these actions are a sop.
Physical action is called for. Hardship in these circumstances is inevitable. Being a victim is apathetic. Citizens subject to these pirate governments must endure it on their terms in solidarity with the present and intended victims. The reactionaries are against the world. US and Israeli citizens must take the initiative; stop paying taxes; physically extract the members of governments from their positions of authority; physically block the military; overthrow the governments.
A hero dies in recognition that the alternative was killing him anyway.
We are not dealing with sane people.
The blame has to stop at Obama and the Congress. Even before the election he had on his knee pads and was groveling to IAPAC and he quickly issued Hillary a pair so she could also grovel. Until he is willing to get a pair and a backbone and stand up to the Israelis, nothing will change. Most people in the US don't realize that US airlines overfly Iran on a regular basis. We need to fire Hillary and the Iran desk at State and have some US airline executives talk to the Iranians. We could drastically improve relations within a month.
"Star Trek" star-timers talk BIG.
Sure US/IZ can destroy the planet....but:
Look at Iran's conduct in the "Iran-Iraq" war.
Confronted by Saddam's (remember him?)attack...
funded by US/IZ....
Iran took huge casualties... and kicked-ass.....
and never crossed it's historical borders.
Shock & Awe is so retro.
IZ dies... 200,000 US Dupes, & 20,000 NATO's die....
and the planet is poisoned.
WTF is wrong with this insane regime?
That insane regime is the US/IZ.
the thing with THAT "splendid little war" OF THE USA against Iran -- by way of its PROXY at that time - Saddam Hussein the "cooperative" ....is:
IF it was purely between Iraq's Hussein and the Iranians in that period -- Iraq would easily have been run aground by the iranians.
below -- an article about VIETNAM..."plans to have Nuclear Power BY 2030"....
supplied by Russia.
QUESTION:
WHAT IF Vietnam "covertly" intends to build nuclear weapons ..whatever its reasons..is the USA going to find a new "threat to world peace" following ITS LEAD in the arms and nuclear arms race?
of course everyone in the world, excepting perhaps many americans even as late as today, KNOWS that the USA invaded and "warred" in vietnam for REGIME CHANGE....to bow to the USA -- and after decades of it...was kicked out with tail in the behind...(though some americans STILL don't admit it...and therefore "continue" the "vietnam war" IN the middle east and Central asia...and goodness knows where ELSE..."until VICTORY"...)
so -- if vietnam declares it's "full steam ahead" -- what's the USA going to do? gather some "coalition of the willing?" ....

Vietnam plans eight nuclear power plants by 2030
HANOI — Energy-short Vietnam announced an expansion of its nuclear power programme on Tuesday, with eight plants planned for operation over the next 20 years.
Atomic power will become one of the nation's key energy sources, according to the decision posted on the government website.
Initial plans called for four reactors but the notice said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung had approved eight nuclear facilities, each with at least four reactors, by 2030.
The eight plants will generate a total of 15,000-16,000 megawatts of electricity, the document said.
The government previously announced that a Russian firm had won the contract for Vietnam's first nuclear power station, which is to begin operation in 2020.
Story continues below...
Experts estimated the cost of Vietnam's initial 4,000-megawatt facility at 11 billion to 18 billion dollars.
The government's plan calls for "efficient and safe exploitation of nuclear power plants" and aims to increase participation of domestic industries in the projects gradually, with a view to "self reliance in design, building, installation, operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants."
At an international conference in Hanoi last week, experts said Vietnam must now start to implement safety measures including public oversight for its first nuclear plant.
More than a third of the country's energy currently comes from hydropower.
Vietnam had a shortage of two billion kilowatt-hours in the first five months of the year, according to a state electricity body.
Foreign businesses have expressed concern about a lack of energy and other infrastructure in Vietnam.
"Consumption of electricity keeps on growing by 15 percent annually, thereby substantially surpassing the economic growth rates," the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam wrote last month.
Other Southeast Asian countries are exploring the possibility of nuclear power, despite what detractors say is the area's lack of experience with the technology, and safety concerns in a region prone to natural disasters.
We're all used to the near-daily threats from Israel and the US about all military options being on the table for use against Iran, covert war being authorized, etc - but what would the political and international retailiation on Israel actually look like? I can think of some military scenarios but am more interested in what the political and international results would be
If Israel launches a preemptive attack on Iran – would the world feel that an Iranian counterattack on Israel would be fully within it’s rights to undertake, under international law?
How could Israel not be viewed as the aggressor internationally - and what kind of meaningful international response and response at the UN would result – if any?
If an Iranian counterattack is apparently justified by these Israeli illegal acts of war – would the US intervene on behalf of Israel anyway?
Why is not the UN, EU, and concerned nations throughout the world not already loudly and publicly warning Israel she will be a pariah for carrying out such an attack at this point? - as reported we know this has already been happening privately. Why don't nations start publicly warning Israel about the consequences she will face if she belligerently attacks Iran?
Why not focus Israel on the 2012 Middle East Nuclear Free Zone and publically warn her any attack on Iran in the next two years will be an aggressive war crime that endangers world peace?
