Nuclear Hero’s 'Crime' Was Making Us Safer
Mordechai Vanunu — my friend, my hero, my brother — has again been arrested in Israel on "suspicion" of the "crime" of "meeting with foreigners." I myself have been complicit in this offense, traveling twice to Israel for the express purpose of meeting with him, openly, and expressing support for the actions for which he was imprisoned for over eighteen years. His offense has been to defy openly and repeatedly ,conditions put on his freedom of movement and associations and speech after he had served his full sentence, restrictions on his human rights which were a direct carry-over from the British Mandate, colonial regulations in clear violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Such restrictions have no place in a nation evincing respect for a rule of law and fundamental human rights. His arrest and confinement are outrages and should be ended immediately.
My perspective on Mordechai and his behavior was expressed as well as I could do it today in the following op-ed published in 2004 on the day of his release from prison. I can only say that I would be proud to be known as the American Vanunu: though my own possible sentence of 115 years for revealing state secrets was averted by disclosure of government misconduct against me which pales next to the Israeli misconduct in assaulting, drugging and kidnapping Vanunu in the process of bringing him to trial, let alone the eleven years of solitary confinement he was forced to endure.

[Published 4/21/04 in the Los Angeles Times]
Mordechai Vanunu is the preeminent hero of the nuclear era. He consciously risked all he had in life to warn his own country and the world of the true extent of the nuclear danger facing us. And he paid the full price, a burden in many ways worse than death, for his heroic act — for doing exactly what he should have done and what others should be doing.
Vanunu's "crime" was committed in 1986, when he gave the London Sunday Times a series of photos he had taken within the Israeli nuclear weapons facility at Dimona, where he had worked as a technician.
For that act — revealing that his country's program and stockpile were much larger than the CIA or others had estimated — Vanunu was kidnapped from the Rome airport by agents of the Israeli Mossad and secretly transported back for a closed trial in which he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
He spent the first 11 1/2 years in solitary confinement in a 6-by-9-foot cell, an unprecedented term of solitary under conditions that Amnesty International called "cruel, inhuman and degrading."
Now, after serving his full term, he is due to be released today. But his "unfreedom" is to be continued by restrictions on his movements and his contacts: He cannot leave Israel, he will be confined to a single town, he cannot communicate with foreigners face to face or by phone, fax or e-mail (purely punitive conditions because any classified information that he may have possessed is by now nearly two decades old).
The irony of all this is that no country in the world has a stronger stake than Israel in preventing nuclear proliferation, above all in the Middle East. Yet Israel's secret nuclear policies — to this day it does not acknowledge that it possesses such weapons — are shortsighted and self-destructive. They promote rather than block proliferation by encouraging the country's neighbors to develop their own, comparable weapons.
This will not change without public mobilization and democratic pressure, which in turn demand public awareness and discussion. It was precisely this that Vanunu sought to stimulate.
Not in Israel or in any other case — not that of the U.S., Russia, England, France, China, India or Pakistan — has the decision to become a nuclear weapons state ever been made democratically or even with the knowledge of the full Cabinet. It is likely that in an open discussion not one of these states could convince its own people or the rest of the world that it had a legitimate reason for possessing as many warheads as the several hundred that Israel allegedly has (far beyond any plausible requirement for deterrence).
More Vanunus are urgently needed. That is true not only in Israel but in every nuclear weapons state, declared and undeclared. Can anyone fail to recognize the value to world security of a heroic Pakistani, Indian, Iraqi, Iranian or North Korean Vanunu making comparable revelations?
And the world's need for such secret-telling is not limited to citizens of what nuclear weapons states presumptuously call rogue nations. Every nuclear weapons state has secret policies, aims, programs and plans that contradict its obligations under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and the 1995 Declaration of Principles agreed to at the NPT Renewal Conference. Every official with knowledge of these violations could and should consider doing what Vanunu did.
That is what I should have done in the early '60s based on what I knew about the secret nuclear planning and practices of the United States when I consulted at the Defense Department, on loan from the Rand Corp., on problems of nuclear command and control. I drafted the Secretary of Defense Guidance to the Joint Chiefs of Staff for the general nuclear war plans, and the extreme dangers of our practices and plan were apparent to me.
I now feel derelict for wrongfully keeping secret the documents in my safe revealing this catastrophically reckless posture. But I did not then have Vanunu's example to guide me.
When I finally did have an example in front of me — that of young Americans who were choosing to go to prison rather than participate in what I too knew was a hopeless, immoral war — I was inspired in 1971 to turn over a top-secret history of presidential lies about the war in Vietnam to 19 newspapers. I regret only that I didn't do it earlier, before the bombs started falling.
Vanunu should long since have been released from solitary and from prison, not because he has "suffered enough" but because what he did was the correct and courageous thing to do in the face of the foreseeable efforts to silence and punish him.
The outrageous and illegal restrictions proposed to be inflicted on him when he finally steps out of prison after 18 years should be widely protested and rejected, not only because they violate his fundamental human rights but because the world needs to hear this man's voice.
The cult and culture of secrecy in every nuclear weapons state have endangered humanity and continues to threaten its survival. Vanunu's challenge to that wrongful and dangerous secrecy must be joined worldwide.

Show AllWorld in a grave or whistleblow? Hmmm ... ?
The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.
~Albert Einstein
That is a lot of the problem. If the people who are apathetic and do not vote in America joined a third party we could have some real change in America.
I agree not voting at all is just what the ruling elite want. Which is why they put so much effort into supressing the vote.
Not once in my life has the person that I have voted for acually won but so what. One thing that angers me to no end is those who vote for some one solely because they think that the candidate can win.As if it is some kind of sporting event.
I have been told over and over again that I waste my vote by supporting some one who can't win. In my view there are two ways to waste your vote the first is by voting for a candidate or party that has repeatedly shown not to represent you interests once elected and the other is by not voting at all

One can be living and in a grave by not whistleblowing. Sometimes it is harder to live with a heavy conscience. Is it better to sacrifice one for the many? Ellsberg and Mordechai are true champions. See www.rightlivelihood.org for others...the alternative nobel.
FREE VANUNU!
Vanunu blew that whisle and paid a heavy price. How many would have the courage, and if they did would MSM report it?
Probably not.

A nuclear Israel inspires Iran et al. to go nuclear. The mid-east and the rest of the world must become nuke free lest we ultimately blow ourselves up.

jfk told ben gurion in 1963 that israel needed to allow u.s. scientists to inspect dimona, the israeli nuclear plant that was even then churning out materials for manufacturing atomic bombs. kennedy stayed on task. you can find his 1963 letter to israel on the internet, in which he warned the vaunted ben gurion to not even think about making weapons of mass destruction. after kennedy's death, the israelis simply put a "textile manufacturing" sign to cover for the presence of high grade uranium in the department where atomic bomb development occurred. good article by ellsberg, as he, too, risked a lot to get the truth out about vietnam. kudos to scott ritter as well for his accounts on iraq's weapons of mass destruction. happy new year!
merely an expensive public relations stunt.
Until the voters have a real choice, voting counts for nothing. How to make that happen? Revolution, my friend, revolution.
Call for a revolution, George Markley, and it will be you who loses all. The U.S. military is far more powerful than any civilian "army" could hope to resist. They will then let us kill each other while continuing their own agenda in comfort. Best to build and take care of our own communities, and build our own individual governments outside the shadow of the U.S. government. There are over 300 million people in this country. Impossible to organize, but we could at least try on a local level.
"It takes two to speak truth -- one to speak and another to hear." H. Thoreau
I am glad for courageous people like Ellsberg, and the many others who write and publish important facts/truths here on CD and other similar websites.
My hope for 2010 and the near future is that more and more courageous folks will step up and speak their truths so that we the people may continue to hear, know and then act.
Power to you Mordechai Vanunu and to you too, Daniel Ellsberg!

I get the same response,The Mad Loon gets, about wasting my vote on a candidate that cannot win..
I voted for Nadar this time around. I tell them that I voted for who I thought would do the most for the country. I voted my conscious. How can that be a wasted vote?
I tell them that they are wagon jumpers and allow the elites to pick their presidents for them, falling for slogans like "change we can believe in". A PR slogan, Edward Barnays would be proud of.
For Godsake wake-up! That what they are doing is the very definition of insanity.
If are you trying to get real change, you can't vote for the candidates the money interests present to you. You have to look for an alternative.
Vote for a 3rd party candidate.
Voting ones conscience is the only way out of this mess and IMO the only way not to waste your vote.
I wish to express a heartfelt thank you Mordechai Vanunu and Daniel Ellsberg and all the other brave souls who have risked much in order to shine a light on the dark forces within our governments and the coporations that control them.
Thank you so very much
I am a nuclear veteran. I have watched the H-Bombs go off. I had radiation sickness and recovered. I know first hand what the various governments are playing with. There are not many of us left with first hand knowledge. To the new crop of bureaucrats and generals, an H-Bomb is just a bigger firecracker.
I've spent most of my adult life working for peace and nuclear disarmament. I have pointed out the incredible parallels between what is happening now and what happened in 1930's Germany, with the power of the Junkers and the Wehrmacht being used to subvert the nation and its people. The SS burned the Reichstag, paving the way for the Enabling Act (Hitler's Patriot Act) to remove the constitutional rights of the German people. The rest is history, but now we are reliving that history, here in the "Bastion of Freedom."
Sadly, it is no different today, except worse as the weapons of war are even more destructive and impersonal.
The world is essentially controlled by military and the Military Industrial Congressional Complex. War is the ultimate bottom line for the MICC. They supply arms to all sides of any conflict, then sit back and let the profits roll in. They mark off a certain amount as business expenses, the millions that are used to buy the politicians and judges that make their actions "legal."
We the People of the World are nothing but slaves or indentured servants, working for the global MICC or being sent as cannon fodder into far off places.
Right now, we are in (amongst other places) Afghanistan, a country that has a thousand year or more history of repelling invaders. Alexander gave up. The British Raj finally gave up. Russia tried and failed, and now we, with our weapons of remote controlled slaughter, have taken up the cudgel.
A couple of facts. It takes approximately a million dollars a year to keep a soldier in Afghanistan. It costs close to that to kill an Afghan "terrorist" i.e., a patriot or freedom fighter if the roles were reversed. Their deaths simply recruit more to the cause.
Afghans make most of their weapons in caves, cost negligible.
It takes one or two bullets to kill an enemy, cost negligible.
You do the math.
Yes. The U.S. military thinks Vietnam was bad. Afghans are going to teach our military a lesson I hope it remember for more than a few decades this time. Maybe they can come over here and teach us to make weapons in caves. Actually, with the internet, they just might do that. It's about time us little roaches started taking back the world. Making weapons in caves--that sounds about right.
Very typical; the hypocrisy that a so-called democracy can imprison upstanding, moral people who have harmed no one, while mass murderers and war criminals are lauded as heroes.
British nuclear expert's 17th floor UN death plunge 'was not suicide."
Nov 1, 2009 ... Timothy Hampton, 47, a scientist involved in monitoring nuclear activity, ... from the 17th floor of a United Nations building did not commit suicide ... nuclear testing in Iran. The UN has strongly denied the claims. ...

"Trained in Britain as a bio-chemist, Mr Hampton worked in a bio-lab before moving into construction.
He then worked on nuclear test-ban projects before joining the UN in 1998, said the CTBTO.
The IAEA, an independent and separate organisation, inspects nuclear plants worldwide and is based in the building next to the CTBTO in Vienna.
Under a year ago, an American died at the IAEA in strikingly similar circumstances, his body being found at the bottom of a stairwell.
A UN spokeswoman said an investigation into that case continues, though Austrian police have concluded it was suicide."

Only in the United States, Britain, and Israel do scientists: get muzzled by their governments, arrested by their governments, and murdered by their governments without investigation......Whether it was: the anthrax case, 9/11 attacks, fabricated evidence on the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, treason by Department of Defense Officials, Washington D.C. prostitution case, the election frauds of 2000 and 2004, or the movement of nuclear weapons from Minot Air Force Base to Biloxi Air Force Base, many: scientists, airmen, or people in the know have died from: mystrerious heart attacks, suicides with no notes, single car accidents, plane crashes, and mysterious uninvestigated murders.
The CIA ran a murder lab at Fort Detrick, Maryland, the same place the anthrax came from in the 2001 cases......Sydney Gottlieb, known as "Doctor Death", experimented with all kinds of chemicals, including drugs like LSD, to perfect a method of killing targets without being discovered.....
Whether we want to admit it or not, the CIA went "Off Book" after the Church Committee hearings in the 70's.....There isn't a terrorist out there that has not been trained by the CIA or a CIA Trainee. (Operation Cyclone helped to create terrorist cells in 43 Islamic Nations).....The protection that Blacwater has received from the U.S. Justice Department is evidence that their people are functioning as an "Off Book" operation.
The CIA had infiltrated the FBI and other governmental agencies in the 1960's according to Jsmes W. Douglass in "JFK, The Unspeakable"......Why would presidents be afraid to cross the CIA? Presidents have known that they can be murdered in front of millions of people by that very same agency and that agency has a network of "Off Book Personnel".......
>>There isn't a terrorist out there that has not been trained by the CIA or a CIA Trainee. (Operation Cyclone helped to create terrorist cells in 43 Islamic Nations).....<<
Interesting statement. Got any evidence that'll stabd the spagetti test -- when it hits the wall will it stick?

Obomba just signed a bill, sending Israel Billions of dollars
to buy more weapons from the usa.
You know what mind can't do? So did I, once upon a time.
To wit that, since 2004 I have been being given, in dreams and while awake, names, as well as other kinds of information, of people, who are or were involved in one way or another, often unknowingly, in certain nefarious and surreptitious activities dating from and originating out of the Second World War in the European Theatre.
Numerous Europeans, who lived through the horrors and devastation of this war, relocated to the United States subsequently and initiated a plan, the ultimate goal of which is the obliteration of human life on this planet through thermonuclear holocaust.
On their way to this end, they have caused to be built gargantuan chambers of death disguised as convention centers, which, in the near future, will come into their true use, after, I presume, "terrorist" attacks here in the United States, Martial Law, etc., etc., for the most massive kill-off of humanity in history.
Experience has taught me repeatedly that for Americans this is supremely unthinkable. However, I suspect that there are Europeans alive in 1945, who will be able to take me seriously.
Did you know what war can do to people? If not, now you do.
If there be but one in all this world, who is with me in this understanding,...
Dear Friends:
Voting no longer works in this country. There is only one other way for people to have their own government.
However, if it is not just and fair, I will not support the changes. It is either, "One for all, and all for one", or nothing.
Why didn't Ellsberg include the US in the list of countries that should come clean about their nuclear arsenals? If ever there was a rogue state it was the one that used nuclear bombs against he civilian populations of two cities in Japan in August of 1945.
Hey Daniel,
Just where the F' have you been-and WHAT have you done for Vanunu since 2004?
I TRIED contacting you many times since you wrote your 2004 article, but you-as well as Amy Goodman-whose 2004 interview with Vanunu was major testimony against him in his FREEDOM OF SPEECH Trial which began January 25, 2006-have ALL been MIA since 2004!
IS a recycle of what you wrote in 2004 really the best you can offer him and US?
Are you so stuck on yourself and clueless as to this US Citizen Journalist's 2005, 2006, 2008 video interviews with Vanunu and text reports from DAY ONE about Vanunu's FREEDOM OF SPEECH trial ever since it began in Januray 25, 2006!?!

From Ellsberg's 2004 article (which I remember reading then):
"Vanunu's "crime" was committed in 1986, when he gave the London Sunday Times a series of photos he had taken within the Israeli nuclear weapons facility at Dimona, where he had worked as a technician.
"For that act — revealing that his country's program and stockpile were much larger than the CIA or others had estimated — Vanunu was kidnapped from the Rome airport by agents of the Israeli Mossad and secretly transported back for a closed trial in which he was sentenced to 18 years in prison."
Notice that the world knew Israel had the bomb, just not how many and how sophisticated. (After all, as other have recently noted, Britain and France and others had secretly aided Israel's acquisition probably for strategic Cold War purposes.)
The Zionists believe that possession of nuclear weapons grants Israel immortality---try to destroy Israel and we will take out the world. (What Mordechai Vanunu evidently exposed was that this was not an idle threat.)
This conceit is then projected onto the Iranian Mullahs, who, it is "feared," might build a bomb of their own and thus immortalize Iran (as though it needs that...another Zionist resentment).
If Iran manages to obtain a single nuclear weapon it would be for defensive reasons (while it still credibly claims only seeking peaceful use). Meanwhile, if we accept Vanunu's expose, the Israeli arsenal already exists as an offensive existential threat to the Planet. Has Vanunu's claim ever been verified?
Iran signed on to the (N)NPT, Israel did not. Iran's nuclear facilities have been subjected to IAEA inspections interminably; Israel denies access to international inspectors.
One real solution to this Mexican standoff would be for Pakistan to ship about a third of its nuclear arsenal over to Iran, along with AQ Kahn Consulting, Inc, LLC. Passage protected by the Pirates of the Straits...
In closing, what does it mean when more than half a nation's Gross Domestic Product is taken up or expressed as REMEDIAL ECONOMICS? We spend taxpayer funds to stock polluted lakes with fish that otherwise could not survive there, so that sportsmen can fish.
Perhaps I just digressed, not sure.
The Copenhagen thing was an exercise in Remedial Economics. For the CO2 emitting countries---the industrialized countries---the proposal is that they reverse CO2 emissions. An Exercise in Utility! Can't be done and everyone knows it!
Before anything like Copenhagen can be reconvened, we humans are gonna have to reconcile this nuclear monster. It must be confronted honestly and aggressively, and the people who have any hidden agenda must be brought to the table and asked, WHY? Science has known for a century that this is damned dangerous stuff. I mean back around the time of Roentgen and Madame Curie a research assistant's arm sort of decayed and fell off after being exposed to, oh, you know, X-RAYS! Give me a half-life, Please!

From the 2004 Ellsberg article:
"Not in Israel or in any other case — not that of the U.S., Russia, England, France, China, India or Pakistan — has the decision to become a nuclear weapons state ever been made democratically or even with the knowledge of the full Cabinet."
I had missed that.
How do we confer immortality on the undemocratic state? Is that the goal of humanity? Oppressed forever?

In closing, Happy New Year to all at CD. Your collective writings have kept me sane (I hope!) in these very difficult times. I hope I have made some small contribution with my localist tendencies.
To Scott Ritter and others of like ilk, my many hats are off to you all. The Loyal Opposition now needs the proverbial Shadow Government.

President Obama proclaimed his intent to lead the world to nuclear disarmament. A WONDERFUL GOAL. Now earn your Nobel Peace Prize. If not we will sooner or later blow ourselves up.
A spiteful, vindictive Israeli government, just like their g*d. Having Mordechai Vanunu released from his predicament should be a priority for the president of the US.
U R an IDIOT!
ALL Vanunu has been asking is to LEAVE the state.
Israel has denied Vanunu a Passport.
He has NO 'dual citizenship' with US.
In April 1999, thirty-six members of the House of Representatives signed a letter calling for Vanunu's release from prison because they believed "we have a duty to stand up for men and women like Mordechai Vanunu who dare to articulate a brighter vision for humanity."
President Clinton responded with a public statement expressing concern for Vanunu and the need for Israel and other non-parties to the Non-Proliferation Treaty to adhere to it and accept IAEA safeguards, and ever since the silence has been deafening from US Government.
On March 26, 2006, just prior to our taping "30 Minutes with Vanunu" he told me:
“Many journalists come here to the American Colony, from CNN and NY Times. They all want to cover my story, but their EDITORS say no...CNN wants to interview me; but they say they can't do it because they don't want problems with the Israeli censor. BBC is doing the same thing.
"Sixty Minutes from the United States from the beginning they wanted to do a program, but because of the censor situation they decide not to do it. Also big media from Germany, France, Italy, Japan. None of them wants problems with the Israelis."
Little sister did it on WeAreWideAwake:

Israel wants PEACE. A PIECE of Egypt, A PIECE of JORDAN, A PIECE of Lebanon, A PIECE of Syria, and A PIECE of ANYTHING it Can get it's HANDS on.
Perhaps we should expend as much effort on Irael as we do on Iran and North Korea!
