And the Catholic Bishops Endorse! A Special Thank-You To Planned Parenthood and NARAL
There's a shit storm going down on TV right now on CSPAN as the health care bill hits the floor of the House.
Thank you Democrats, for making women take a punch in the throat from a bunch of old men who have spent the better part of the last century avoiding their own problems. So Rahm and Obama (who did nothing to stop it) can have their "w":
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops delivered a critical endorsement to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Saturday by signing off on late-night agreement to grant a vote on an amendment barring insurance companies that participate in the exchange from covering abortions.
"Passing this amendment allows the House to meet our criteria of preserving the existing protections against abortion funding in the new legislation," the Bishops wrote in a letter to individual members. "Most importantly, it will ensure that no government funds will be used for abortion or health plans which include abortion."
Well, you have to give the culture warriors something, so they can go around cheering about the big victory that they got in this bill. So happy to have the chance to line it all up for you all.
Thank you, Planned Parenthood and NARAL, from the bottom of my heart, for sitting on your hands and enabling this shit. Hope you have fun at all those Common Purpose meetings, those cocktail parties at the Pelosi's.
You own this one.
It's not like they haven't been perfecting this act for a long time. Helping the Democrats stay in power by giving them the Official Good Gyno Seal of Approval even when they do things like - oh, I don't know, voting for Samuel Alito and tell rape victims to take a cab to another hospital if they want to get Plan B contraception.
Could they whip the pro-choice women to block the rule if they want to? Of course they could. Yank their endorsements and they could cause havoc in the Democratic party. But they won't, because Nancy Keenan and Cecile Richards value their own personal position in the veal pen pecking order WAY too much for that.
One of the things that made a fight for a public option possible was because there were no "veal pen" validators occupying the health care space. Nobody knows who HCAN is. The White House tried to press the unions and other veal pen groups into service but progressives standing there ready to shoot on sight made everyone else back away for fear of losing their own credibility.
People think the "veal pen" phenomenon is insignificant, but it's not. The abortion fight - like the environmental fight - is extremely difficult to wage online, because you can't activate those who care about the issue if the "brand names," the issue validators, are telling them everything is fine either by action or inaction. And that's exactly what the Democrats - from the White House on down to Nancy Pelosi and the House leadership - want right now.
But let's be clear about this. The only reason that we are in the position where the price of passing health care reform is allowing even liberal Marcy Kaptur to sneeringly dismiss choice activists as narrow class warriors who don't care about working women is because Planned Parenthood and NARAL have allowed it to happen. They collect millions of dollars in revenue each year. They've exacted no price from the Marcy Kapturs of the world, who actually have to care what liberals think of them, and focused instead on anti-choice Republicans who are only empowered by their ire. They have no scalps. There is no price for bucking Planned Parenthood and NARAL. It isn't a fight that the Democrats want to spend "political capital" on, and these groups insure that they don't have to.
Forget about the fact that more Americans are now anti-choice than pro-choice for the first time since Gallup has been polling the issue. More and more Democrats in Congress each year are anti-choice, despite the fact that the party is pro-choice. It's acceptable now. These groups have the lobbyists, the money, the access, and their leadership uses it for their own personal advancement while the cause they purport to defend withers on the vine.
The national Planned Parenthood organization listed $126 million in assets in 2007. Cecile Richards made $385,163 (PDF). The state chapters whose employees put their lives on the line so women can have the right to choose deserve support and protection within the Democratic party that she is not providing.
NARAL paid Nancy Keenan $145,538 from the Foundation (PDF) in 2007, which listed total assets of $4,119,329. But the NARAL PAC reports $87,125 cash on hand as of September 30, 2009.
They knew this was coming since at least July 1 - and they didn't even raise money for the fight.

Show AllWhy are these guys making the rules? I think that the criteria for a voice in congress about abortion is that the person must first be a women and second have been pregnant at least once. Otherwise direct your pro-life toward peace and an end to war. Peace
It seems to me that we need a new political party, devoted to ensuring human rights and in particular women's rights in the USA and the rest of the undeveloped world.
Yes folks, this House bill is a poison pill.
By the single device of forbidding MediCare type payments to providers, Pelosi's bill requires that the 'public option' pays all the country's providers through contract negotiations. She has doomed true competition against the insurance giants, for the following reasons:
(1) Pelosi prohibits MediCare computers from paying providers as it has done successfully for decades. Instead, with the 'public option' bureaucrats must negotiate contracts with hundreds of thousands of providers, large and small, in thousands of locales, for varying rates and terms. This is a function only a private contractor can perform, not Medicare bureaucrats in Washington. So we are likely looking at costly private contracting, and a very slow start.
(2) A slow start means low customer count for providers. So why should providers lower their rates for the 'public option', as compared with what they charge Aetna, for example? Another potential competitive advantage is eliminated.
(3) The insurance giants often pay providers a set amount each month for every insured person, sick or not. This means that providers can profit greatly if they don't have to perform many services. Pelosi's 'public option' cannot pay providers this way, which means fewer providers would be interested in contracting with it.
(4) For the same reason as (1), (2) and (3), it will take longer, if ever, to establish a full provider network for every corner of the country. This means less incentive for you and I to pick the 'public option', as opposed to, say, Wellpoint.
Yes, by the simple device of prohibiting Medicare type payments, Pelosi has doomed the 'public option' from the start.
This, while poll after poll shows that Americans, by 2 to 1, want a 'Medicare type' public option. Pelosi's bill is night and day from 'Medicare type'. She is either very naive, or thinks we are.
It is always of interest to me when women are directly employed or co-opted in the maintenance of Gender Slavery with corollary support for Male Supremacy and Authoritarian Patriarchy as a consequence.
The battle of course is not just with abortion per se though that is a critical piece, a sine qua non. The battle is with contraception in any form. A woman, any woman cannot be allowed to say no to pregnancy or they are on their way to autonomy. Cannot be allowed if Males are to reign supreme.
Political freedom is built on Economic Freedom which cannot exist without Biological Freedom. Had your RDIF chip installed yet? Anyone, male or female who does not have economic and biological self-determination - is a slave. Is that complicated?
6000 years of Gender Slavery has been more than enough. You'd think they'd get bored after a while and try something else. Well, we'll see. Shortly coming to a time when humans will chose the past and die as a species, or choose the future and start living like humans...not quite yet, but soon. You will know when.
Piece.
Bring America Back !!!!
***This article is true enough, factual, but the underlying issue(s) cannot be over-emphasized.
***The Catholic Vote is a Humongus Vote and will, without
fail, hang all of its cookies on the Pro Lifer Candidate(s)!
***The prime example of recent history is John Kerry==a Catholic who admitted to being "personally pro-choice ! Then, after the Vatican publicly said they would not ex=
communicate Kerry, that Catholic Vote went to King George.
****Never mind that Bush had an ongoing war which he Lied the US into. killed millions of innocent Iraquis with His
shock & awe immoral, illegal, and war crimed Invasion.
Never mind that over 4000 US Troops are dead with tens of thousands more troops seriously wounded and injured.
***Never mind that King George adopts silence over our little sister ally Israel earning the title..BUtchers of Beirut--and 1500 dead Gazans in an overt Genocide.
All of this disappears from the Catholic Mindset when the
words "pro-life" ! are concerned. All John Kerry had to do was wnat all polititians do==LIE==He should've told the media he was a "Pro Life Catholic", and Bingo==KIng George was ripe for the picking and wold've lost the Re:Election.
Remember the headlines after the Presidential Debates??:::
======Kerry More Presidential Than The President==== !!
It was the first time in US televised history that the candidate who actually won the Pres Debates, then lost the election==Kerry to Bush !!!! Amazing, and it was not the Veteran Boatlifting that did it, it was the Catholic Vote!
Thanks, again, Jane for telling the truth.
This newly passed health insurance reform bill is a farce, and will NOT solve any of the problems we face. First of all, it won't be enacted until 2013. Personally, I think our Misreprentatives (I stole this term from one of the ealier posts) are purposely avoiding what might turn into repercussions effecting the 2012 election.
The fact that the Catholic Church is back in charge of women's bodies is quite disturbing -- and the fact that Planned Parenthood and NARAL sat by and said nothing, and did nothing, is disgusting!
I agree with EastCoastLefty101 that the Democratic Leadership Committee runs the Democratic Party, and they are interested in nothing but their own self-aggrandizement. I try to vote 3rd Party whenever I can.
"Roe v Wade lost its control after Casey vs Planned Parenthood in 1992 but generally what has been perceived as restrictions on abortion such as parental involvement and mandatory waiting periods doesn't look anti-abortion to me. The biased counseling I can see as intimidation against women. If men and women would get together and work out the safety issues, the issue wouldn't look as complicated." -- Martian Bachelor
Bob Casey is now a Senator from Pennsylvania, promoted by the DLC.
It all boils down to -- I, as a woman, do NOT want anyone to be in control of, or make decisions about MY body except me! Intimidation -- the word is too mild!
"Early in the struggle for legal abortion in Vermont(1972) a legislator here said to me: “If you women get abortion on demand, how do we know we'll have enough men to fight the next war?” This is what women are for; brood mares for cannon fodder to the idiot men who don't have to raise children." -- Artemix
The Vermont legislator said it all, didn't he? The same was true during slavery -- Some African American women, slaves, were used, specifically, by white men as breeders! They were forced to give birth after being raped. These women had NO say in what happened to them, and they had NO power over their lives, or over their bodies.
"Even if Roe v Wade were overturned, abortion would not be technically illegal even in states outlawing it. Coat hanger abortions existed long before Roe v Wade became the law of the land in 1973." -- Martian Bachelor
As for "coat-hanger" abortions -- Do you think unsafe, unsanitary abortions are OK, that women should have to subject themselves to possible loss of life because they don't choose to give birth to a child?
When I worked in a major hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, during the late 1960s, I worked on a gynecology floor and I saw, first-hand, the effects of back-alley abortions. Many women died --I only came in contact with the women whose lives were saved in the emergency room. I don't want to go back to those times -- ever! If you could see the wide, frightened eyes of the women for whom I cared, and if you could experience their silence or the grip of their hand -- well, tears still fill my eyes from those two years on that gynecology floor. And, I remain haunted by those experiences.
Kay, I do not want to see unsafe abortions either. One of my aunts nearly died of having a coat hanger abortion in the 1950s long before I was born which my mother later told me about when she warned me about dating girls in high school. I can understand exactly what you witnessed and I completely stand with you there. I'm just stating the technical facts about abortion and the types but I'm no guru either.
The right to choose what you do for, with or to your body extends far beyond abortion. By using a narrow definition we cede too much to gov't. What about drugs used? What about choice of types of health care? Shouldn't choice be about all of it.
If these pro-choice groups have millions, why not just fund raise to pay for the abortions? One of the many problems with nat'l health insurance is gov't controlling your body and your life. You can point out how that is different all over the world but it doesn't matter, we have here what we have here. How about requiring doctors to violate confidentially and report all stated drug use by their patients, legal and illegal. Is that OK as long as you have the Holy Grail?
In December, 2009 Europe is scheduled to adopt upper limits on vitamins and minerals available over the counter. Whether it can be stopped is unknown. The limits are miniscule, RDA only. Some of us will take many 1000 mg time release vitamin C for assorted problems. The limit for C is less than 100mg. We are being devoured and the only concern seems to be to get someone else to pay the bills for mostly useless, high cost treatments.
The problem with health care is cost and cost is related to gov't subsidies, direct (refusing to negotiate drug prices, doing the drug industry research at the NIH) and indirect (removing competitive, low cost alternatives to drugs from the market). It is also related to the AMA which intimidates doctors who would like to try alternatives.
Nothing gets fixed until that is fixed.
In the REAL world we may have gotten a health care bill in the House that covers 36 million uninsured and restrains greedy insurers from denying coverage because of preexisting conditions or other rationales. Yes I would have preferred medicare for all and coverage for abortions. BUT the votes were not there.
Hey, women deserve the rights they've enjoyed since.....when were men not in power, slavery, war, rape and death not savored, fought for, but against?
Is no glass ceiling, but the confines of a cage. Invisible my daughter? No, touch these bars. From men in their postpubescent rage; Cowards. Afraid of the light of day.
viva la femme
(of course, pelosi is not an actual, real woman, nor rice. anomolies, non life forms)
Oh how the corporate misogynists must love this bailout of Big Insurance. I see that women, who are always paid less, are charged more to make up for it. It's no wonder that the Patriarchal Church is delighted with this healthcare catastrophy.
Dear Jane,
Thanks for not being an apologist for the Democratic Party or the Obama administration as so many liberal bloggers are. It is refreshing that FireDogLake is not an Obama/Democratic Party Gatekeeper like the:
Daily Kos - Obama/Democratic Party Gatekeeper's
Huffington Post - Obama/Democratic Party Gatekeeper's
Crooks and Liars - Obama/Democratic Party Gatekeeper's
Democratic Underground (DU) - Obama/Democratic Party Gatekeeper's
So, again Jane, it is great that you try to tell the truth unlike the aforementioned sites which are Obama/Democratic Party suck-ups!!!!
It is the Democratic Leadership Council Runs the Dem Party's Agenda, and not the "liberal-progressive" base. It is time that you all understand this. The Democratic Party has diminished the values and voices of its "liberal-progressive" base ever since it formed the Democratic Leadership Council.
And, yes, women have fell victim to the male-inspired Democratic Leadership Council. The sooner you all understand these realities and deal with it after confronting the facts, then you see why being a "liberal/progressive" Democrats now means very little.
The "liberal-progressive" rhetoric the Democratic Party uses on the talk shows and even that is less frequent that you all realize should tell you things which you are all intelligent enough to figure out.
The country has moved so far to the right that too many "liberals-progressives" think that conservative to moderate Democrats who oppose the far right Fascists of the GOP believe in liberalism or progressivism. NOT!!!!
I am an unabashedly Leftist Here and DO NOT LIKE THE DEMOCRATS appeasement, equivocation and sellout of leftist/progressive policies to the right wing Repukes.
From Gay Rights to Wage Earning/Jobs to Women’s Reproductive Health Issues, the Democrats now look to maintain their grip on power while compromising the core values of its leftist/progressive base.
The Democratic Party takes it leftist/progressive base for granted and when push comes to shove, goes with the Democratic Leadership Council agenda which is GOP-Lite, corporate centered, and favors a militarized foreign policy agenda built on “bipartisanship.”
Barack Obama will soon be sending over 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, yet, the leftist/progressive base still fail to see the president as a center-right corporate-militarist leader of which he has proven to be. Obama will not be looking into signing any real international agreements to curb emissions. Obama is turning into a failure on environmental issues as well.
Obama and the Democratic Party today are closer to the Catholic Church and Christian Fundamentalists on issues of:
1. Women’s right to choose –Yes a WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHAT SHE DOES WITH HER OWN BODY!!!!!!
2. Gay Rights – DADT, Gay Marriage – which Obama and the Democratic National Committee did nothing about in Maine last week, and supports the Defense of Marriage Act.
3. Democrats continue the big Spending on Defense Budgets and endless war funding.
OBAMA ia a CORPORATE WHORE!!!!
The DEMOCRATS are CORPORATE WHORES TOO!!!
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? (Who will guard the guardians, watch the watchers, etc?)
Hello EastCoastLefty101
See Senator Sanders, Congressman Alan Grayson and Congressman Dennis Kucinich and a few others that are worthy of being called Democrats. The others are usually found in the bent over position with their arms holding on to their ankles.
Can someone explain this to me? Is the new "Health Reform" really going to ban insurers paying for abortions? I don't understand if this amendment has passed, or is just going to be voted on.
Also, Weiner withdrew his single-payer amendment, he said, because Pelosi didn't want to have to debate this anti-choice amendment, too. But now we're getting the anti-choice but not the vote on single-payer??
And finally, the majority of Americans in three polls linked in Hamsher say they are "pro-life"?? How did this happen? WTF is going on?
I would give the Bishops a big five o! if I could believe for just one second that they actually believed in human rights that included a right to health care. But in reality all they were trying to do with the abortion issue was give cover to those who were looking for an excuse to vote against any health care bill. I have seen too much hypocrisy from the American bishops since I was ordained some 42 years ago. Every time they meddled in politics it has been to protect wealth, either owned by the Church or by very rich Catholics.I have just enough faith to believe that each of them will have to answer to a higher judge--and that judge has made very clear what the standards will be.
I don't know how many times I've quit the RCC. I do know that I and my cousins have saved at least 12 children from growing up under the iron fist of a bunch of nasty old men! As for NARAL and PP --- they have simply ceased to have any meaning.
Thanks Jane for telling the truth about our national organizations. I had hoped Cecile Richards would bring some fire in the belly back to this issue but like so many she confuses her organization's access with actual power. Unfortunately the only real cure here is a real and active women's movement. And not just online. We got abortion rights by fighting for them in our legislatures, sometimes by going door to door, by having coffees with women in suburban neighborhoods.
Too many women think they can take these rights for granted like so many though we would always have democracy in America. Too many just vote for the Dems no matter how many slaps in the face we get from them. Time to stop being battered women and empower ourselves. Power never conceded anything without a struggle Obama and Rahma and Pelosi and Richards don't feel they have to do a damn thing for women because we are not making waves anymore. So we have more rape than ever horrendous video games about killing prostititutes and raping girls and endless money for war somehow war is not on the pro life agenda.
Early in the struggle for legal abortion in Vermont(1972) a legislator here said to me: “If you women get abortion on demand, how do we know we'll have enough men to fight the next war?” This is what women are for; brood mares for cannon fodder to the idiot men who don't have to raise children.
We should go on the offensive find someone to introduce a bill to keep government fundning from corporations like KBR and Xxe that are known to support rape and in the case of Blackwater/Xxe accused of murder. Lets count the lives of the already hatched chickens not just the eggs.
IF THERE ARE CONSCIENTIOUS EXEMPTIONS FOR ABORTIONS THEN WHY NOT FOR WAR TAXES AND RAPIST/MURDERER MERCENARIES.
"I had hoped Cecile Richards would bring some fire in the belly back to this issue but like so many she confuses her organization's access with actual power."
She is part of the feminist organizations who play party loyalty. Where was she when Ralph Nader and Cynthia Mckinney were running?
"We got abortion rights by fighting for them in our legislatures, sometimes by going door to door, by having coffees with women in suburban neighborhoods."
Abortions were never illegal technically. You are referring to safe abortions which came after Roe v Wade in 1973. Abortion was available ever since ancient times. The legality of some or all of abortion varied from place to place and at different times.
"Too many women think they can take these rights for granted like so many though we would always have democracy in America. Too many just vote for the Dems no matter how many slaps in the face we get from them."
Bingo. I'm no feminist but I voted for Nader who wasn't picky about gender. He was for women's rights but at least he would make his support general without offending us guys.
"We should go on the offensive find someone to introduce a bill to keep government fundning from corporations like KBR and Xxe that are known to support rape and in the case of Blackwater/Xxe accused of murder."
That is a powerful statement worth telling the proponents against funding abortion clinics. Congress won't listen until feminist groups switch their endorsements from Democrat and Republican to Green and mobilize their supporters.
"Abortions were never illegal technically. You are referring to safe abortions which came after Roe v Wade in 1973. Abortion was available ever since ancient times. The legality of some or all of abortion varied from place to place and at different times."
This is freaking ridiculous.
Then please tell that to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion
Even if Roe v Wade were overturned, abortion would not be technically illegal even in states outlawing it. Coat hanger abortions existed long before Roe v Wade became the law of the land in 1973.
While abortions have been available for centuries, they have not always been legal. Read this: http://www.prochoice.org/about_abortion/history_abortion.html.
Remember what Wikipedia is. It's not the last word on anything.
Wikipedia is editable but usually on general information, it can be a credible source. The link you gave I credit for being more specific but I have some doubts about its independence. I did not see them giving credit to the men who made legalization possible but they did confirm what I said about coat hanger abortions still going on even where abortion was outlawed.
Roe v Wade lost its control after Casey vs Planned Parenthood in 1992 but generally what has been perceived as restrictions on abortion such as parental involvement and mandatory waiting periods doesn't look anti-abortion to me. The biased counseling I can see as intimidation against women. If men and women would get together and work out the safety issues, the issue wouldn't look as complicated.
Instead of Afghanistan becoming a democracy, America is becoming a theocracy like Afghanistan. There is little difference between the Taliban and the Catholic Pope and Bishops. I am a woman who grew up, a mindless cult member, who almost died three times due to my obedience to the Catholic Church leaders who insisted they were infallible and if I disobeyed them I would seriously sin against God. Yes I was brain washed from birth. Believe me reproduction is a serious health care issue for millions of women like me who suffer permanent medical problems and hardship, and some die, leaving behind a grieving husband and little children, because the Catholics refuse to accept the fact that it is health care. They will not listen to the cry of the people who suffer from the Pope's ignorance. There was a time,, when I was young that Catholics could not get elected to office due to the fear that the Pope would control legislation now there are many Catholics in congress and on the supreme court. We are enslaved in a theocratic catholic cult.
Hmmm, I got eMail from PP and NARAL urging resistance to the Catholic operation, a Petition, a phone-in campaign. Surprising what Hamsher is saying.
Since I will never be in the position to have an abortion, I don't focus on it as my central issue. Like Gay Marriage, it's more of an indicator of a suite of issues, so I don't dispute what she's saying, just surprised.
SINGLE-TERM abort the DEMS!
As the No Insurer Left Behind debacle enters birth throes evoking mythological tales of the cosmological birth of monsters and demons, there are ever more horrific glimpses, extrusions, silhouettes of writhing tentacles, barbed appendages, fangs, claws, chancred wattles.
Women faint. Strong men weep.
For all the cynicism I can muster-- which is a lot, arguably more than one individual should even possess-- even I'm shocked by the raw and naked steamrollering of the political elite over the will and weal of ordinary unprivileged citizens.
Our Elected Misrepresentatives, a professionalized cadre of technocratic executives, managers, brokers-- businesspersons-- convene in secret to conduct business in a specialized and supreme mercantile exchange.
This is essentially a closed, exclusive, and private process-- equivalent to a private and very exclusive high-stakes poker marathon with players from the top percentile of professional gamblers. We the People drove them there, but are reduced to the status of children, serfs, or slaves assembled in the courtyard to await their Masters' public proclamations of the laws that govern their lives.
But how can that BE, when the overall process of legislation is open, public, and accessible to any interested party? I'm sort of channeling an inner Barney Frank, witheringly pointing out that after lengthy public and permeable procedures, legislation is PUBLISHED-- how "secret" can it be? Oh, it be.
Omnibus legislation expressed in thousand-plus pages of single-spaced text is just the bluff of transparency that is least likely to be called. The pros, the sharps, the shysters, the pimps, the ten-percenters, the bean-counters, the horse-traders and wheeler-dealers don't just accidently produce masterpieces of mystification and obfuscation like the Patriot Act and the palpably devolving No Insurer Left Behind abomination.
Our political leaders hurl telephone books of self-serving gibberish from the metaphorical balcony that are as lethal as buckets of molten lead. Even if one isn't destroyed by a direct hit, it's a time-bomb with a message: OK, unpack THIS! And THEN get back to us with your thoughts. Keep those cards and letters coming in!
So, hell yes! There's natural inclination to harvest incumbents on principle! Damn straight!
Tragically, the Founders overestimated the polity's capacity to evolve and self-correct emergent defects in the political process. Given their wise, if not entirely sensible, intention to exclude or discourage "party" and "faction" as a necessity of government, and their distrust and ambivalence of the common citizen wielding or retaining too much power, the Founders didn't develop "no confidence" or "recall" mechanisms that would more readily allow the population to exert political will and checks upon their ministers.
Single-term mania is one of the ways a trapped and terminally disempowered Amerikan public can express righteous outrage and negative feedback.
· Yr Obd't Servant
Personally, I don't believe in abortions but I don't support taking away a woman's right to it for whatever reason she has to do it. For politicians to mix up abortion with health care legislation is totally barbaric and has no place in health care whatsoever. I am truly prolife, from birth to death, and I want to see this bill defeated and HR 676 in the House and S 703 in the Senate to be passed unaltered. I request nothing more from the politicians.
Ah, so many phrases from Sixties political counterculture have come roaring back to relevance. Remember "co-opted"?
NARAL and Planned Parenthood are bending over like altar boys for the Democratic bosses and the bishops!
But at least it's consensual, so I guess it's OK.
· Yr Obd't Servant
I wish Pigasus, the '68 Hog Farm Party candidate, would come roaring back to relevance.
I miss his honesty, his straightforward nature and the fact that, though he had the right to, he never shit on stage while squealing a speech. If only Norman "no more bullshit" Mailer had agreed to be his running mate they'd have won and changed the world.
