About the only lesson Barack Obama has learned from the Hillary and Bill health insurance debacle of 1993-1994 is to leave Michelle Obama out of his current drive to get something-anything-through the Congress labeled "reform".
Otherwise, he is making the same mistakes of blurring his proposal, catering to right-wing Democrats and corporatist Republicans, who want an even mushier "reform" scam, and cutting deals with the drug, hospital, and health insurance industries.
His political opponents become bolder with each day as they see his party base in Congress weakening, his polls dropping, and a confused public being saturated with unrebutted propaganda by the insatiable profiteering, subsidized health care giants.
Their campaign-money-greased minions on Capitol Hill and the corporatist Think Tanks and columnists are seizing on President Obama's aversion to conflict and repeated willingness to water down what he will fight for.
The loud and cruel baying pack comes in the form of William Kristol ("This is not time to pull punches. Go for the kill."), Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) ("If we're able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him."), and Charles Krauthammer yammering wildly about medical malpractice and tort law. Krauthammer does not substantiate his claims or mention the many victims of malpractice as he gleefully predicts "Obamacare sinking."
All these critics have gold-plated health insurance, of course.
Hillary tried to appease the drug and hospital companies. Obama invites them to the White House, where they presumably pledged to give up nearly $300 billion dollars over ten years without any specifics about how this complex assurance can be policed.
No matter, in return Obama and his aides agreed not to press Congress to authorize the federal government to negotiate drug prices with the drug industry. Don't worry: the taxpayers will pay the bill.
At a meeting on July 7 at the White House between drug company executives, Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, and Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT), the industry, according to The New York Times, was promised that the final legislative package would not allow the reimportation of cheaper medicines from Canada or other countries even if they meet our drug safety standards.
Since these industry meetings at the White House are private, no one knows how many other concessions were made. What is known is that Barack Obama knows better. A former supporter of single payer health insurance (often described as full Medicare for all with free choice of physician and hospital and the elimination of hundreds of billions of dollars of corporate administrative costs and billing fraud), then-Illinois state senator Barack Obama predicted, in 2003, that it would be enacted once Congress and the White House were controlled by Democrats. Well, that is now the situation, but, as President, he believes single payer is not "practical".
Single payer health insurance is supported by a majority of the American people, majority of physicians and nurses, and nearly ninety members of the House of Representatives. (See H.R. 676 and singlepayeraction.org.)
A clear replacement of the private health insurance companies with federal insurance, as Medicare for the elderly did in 1965, allows for clear language. Twenty thousand people die in America each year because they cannot afford health insurance, according to the Institute of Medicine. Hundreds of thousands more suffer because they have no insurance to treat their diseases or injuries.
Single payer means everyone is covered from birth, as is the case now in every western nation. Imagine no lives lost or suffering due to no health insurance.
Fuzzy proposals, regularly altered and over-complicated due to the hordes of avaricious corporate lobbyists, make politicians like Obama very susceptible to lurid descriptions and lies by his vocal, well-insured opponents. Finally, the Obama people are using "health insurance reform", rather than the misnomer "health care reform" which opened them up to charges that government would take over health care. All proposals, including single payer, are based on private delivery of health care.
Now enters the well-insured libertarian Cato Institute with full-page ads in the Washington Post and The New York Times charging Obama with pursuing government-run health care. A picture of Uncle Sam pointing under the headline "Your New Doctor." Nonsense. The well-insured people at Cato should know better than to declare that this "government takeover" would "reduce health care quality."
About 100,000 lives are lost from medical-hospital negligence per year, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. This vast tragedy is hardly going to get worse under universal government health insurance that assembles data patterns to reduce waste, enhances quality, and transparency. By contrast, the secretive big health insurers who make more money the more they deny claims, ignore their loss prevention duties.
In 1950, when President Truman sent a universal health insurance bill to Congress, the American Medical Association (AMA) launched what was then a massive counterattack. The AMA claimed that government health insurance would lead to rationing of health care, higher prices, diminished choices and more bureaucracy. The AMA beat both Truman and the unions that were backing the legislation, using the phrase "socialized medicine" to scare the people.
Fifty-nine years later, "corporatized medicine" has produced all these consequences, along with stripping away the medical profession's independence. Today, the irony is that the corporate supremacists are accusing reformers in Washington of what they themselves have produced throughout the country. Rationing, higher prices, less choice, and mounds of paperwork and corporate red tape. Plus, fifty million people without any health insurance at all.

Americans would wake up. He is trying to help us. Almost every other Politician could care less. It is just common sense to vote for someone who is going to make this country better. But, alas, with the lack of funds for education we are raising ignorant lunatics in this country. It makes one almost feel hopeless. Any way, Nader cares and so do I, so there must be other Americans that care. How did we vote Obama in? He says he is taking us out of Iraq, but the cost is renewed war in Afghanistan. And look at his South American and Columbia deals. Yeah, he is nicer than Bush Cheney but not much different. And what about the drug war? "Not at this time." Then When. When the Republicans were in for eight years, they took advantage of every second and turned the world around, for the worst. Now the Democrats rule and what do they do? NOTHING. I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT AGAIN.
Thanks, Koolbreeze....I hope that all those who say they will "never vote for a Democrat again" don't lose their nerve and buckle under to the "Lesser Evilism" syndrome. Too many have been cajoled, threatened or persuaded into giving the "Democratic" party just 'one more chance'.

Why is it that cowards and calculators like Pelosi and Reid are able to rise to positions of 'leadership' in Congress? Why is it that anyone who places top priority on up-holding "Principle" and serving the "Public Interest" is immediately marginalized?
When I place someone like Ralph Nader or Dennis Kucinich up against all the current political 'leaders' for the sake of comparison, I find that there is NO comparison as far as intelligence, dedication to duty, or ethical standards. I suppose those qualities are what account for their being marginalized by the political movers and shakers whose ONLY priority is their own careers.
Something is VERY wrong with such a picture....and if we don't fix it soon, this nation will continue to fail, at an increasingly high rate of speed. I heartily endorse the attitude expressed by 'Wantrealdemocracy' [above]. I only hope we can mobilize our forces before it's too late, and persuade the Public that we DESERVE something more than mediocrity.

Mr. Krugman of the New York Times along with Ralph Nader are the only sources on the Health Plan that I trust. But I want to focus on Mr. Nader because from the very beginning, with his book, "Unsafe at Any Speed," he has tried patiently and even valiantly to persuade us that we are the ones who should be running the country, not those who make their millions off us. And we can do it: with the dollar and the boycott. Two brief examples, try to get your neighbors to join you--if possible--don't buy a gas guzzler, don't shop at malls. Additionally, perhpas most effective, as shown by the French workers, is their success of mass demonstrations. Let us take to the streets for single-payer Health Care. If we can flood DC with banners, signs, people, we'll at least be acting democratically even if our government does not. Maybe, maybe, we'll change the minds of some politicians; perhaps also arouse a bit of fear in them to pay attention to who we are and what we need. For what WE the ordinary citizens need, as opposed to the high-paid lobbyists insisting--with contributions--that their corporation's needs come first. Is this democracy at work? Or are we, the ordinary citizens, the democracy? We need to decide, now.

There's been talk about curtailing drug prices, and yet there will be no negotiating for best prices, nor will there be any cheaper imports allowed. Interesting way to lower drug costs.
But, there is one other element in the high cost of pharmaceuticals - direct to customer marketing. All those TV ads and glossy magazine ads cost bundles of money, not to mention the costs of little bribes to physicians (high remuneration for speaking engagements, etc., dinners, "conferences" in exotic locales, etc.)
Not only does this cost, but it skews medical treatment by having patients insist on drugs they saw on TV (the priciest, of course), even if there's an adequate cheaper alternative.
Our "system" is 99% corruption and 1% vacuum.

As usual, Ralph is dead on accurate in his analysis. Single payer was taken off the table from the start. Obama didn't even invite a single advocate for single payer to his white house conference on healh care reform. Obama is, quite simply, a fraud. He is no leader, but a fork-tongued, equivocating triangulator, like Clinton--exactly what I expected, and why I voted for Cynthia McKinney, a genuine progressive who would be unabashedly pushing for single payer as President.
I am beginning to think that all this is just a big scam to get massive campaign contributions from giant corporations and their lobbyists.
That part is over. We're just witnessing the second half of the transaction.
I appreciate seeing Ralph's articles here at Common Dreams. In terms of consumer protection, he is invariably 100 percent on target.
I am extremely concerned that the "Single Payer" concept has been eliminated in the current congressional debate. It isn't reassuring to recognize the same old, same old motley crew of lobbyists all over legislators like predatory parasites that were around for the 2003 Medicare Drug Benefits Bill. That was advertised by the Republicans as assistance for the elderly and disabled, but it turned out to be corporate welfare. The corporations that sponsored those lobbyists are now raking in profits hand over fist.
So is this simply a second rount of the health care billionaire corporations ripping off our health care system to get rich?

What's more concerning is that the author of HR676, John Conyers, isn't even fighting to put this on the table at a time when his own party is a strong majority in the House. Win or lose, the least he could do is be a real hero like Kucinich but alas, the majority of Congress is soaked with cowards. :(
Actually, John Conyers is fighting very hard for this bill. He was at a single-payer seminar our group held at the end of May. Since he arrived the evening before, we had a chance to talk to him at length. He had just come from one speaking engagement on single payer, and left our seminar immediately after his speech to give another speech in New York. He feels that the grass roots efforts are the best hope.
We need to push harder, and above all, not fall for the phony "public option" (just what is it?)
We CAN do this, but it's going to take a gargantuan effort by a lot of people.
No real reform comes without effort.

I recently came into Medicare Part A, and more recently I came into Medicare Part B, which latter deducts $96.40 from my Social Security Check without itemizing it.
At age 66 I seem to be in good health, but I think my skin, exposed to 1950s radiation bomb testing, is in the process of becoming very complex.
What do we really mean by "health care"? In my own case I can go out into the great landscape of Indiana and gulp down handsful of wild black berries, while my compatriots in the nearby cities have nearly nothing but "fast food."
There is no separating "health" from "diet."

Medicare? Part A and Part B? I paid into Medicare all my life, and now they are taxing my Social Security at $96.40 a month, and what do I have to show for it? I am still paying into Medicare via my paycheck. See the Catch-22 here? It never stops. "Retirement" is a myth. You work til you drop, if you have a job at all.
I happen to be employed at a high-tech level, running computers for high-end printing, but it does not matter. I have been working at $10 an hour for a decade with no "health care."
Ironically, I have yet to miss a day of work for "sickness." Why? Worse, I smoke!

Even Obama said that the only way to cover everyone is with a single payer system. Here is my suggestion that I believe could be implemented in 60 days or less:
Use MasterCard and Visa for our National Health Care System. Have them set up a special code for all medical expenses. When you go to the doctor you use your MasterCard or Visa card and the special code sends the bill to the government instead of to you. I'm sure that these credit card companies would be happy to implement this plan for the 2%-3% that they currently charge for transactions. Medical only cards could be issued to people who don't qualify for a regular credit card. This way no one gets between you and your doctor and there is no government involvement except to pay the bills. I have read that a 5% income tax could pay for this system. The average family earns $50,000 a year, his tax would be $2500; much less than the typical $12,000 a year insurance policy with deductibles and co-pays.
I wouldn't trust the credit card corps on health care either. It's harder to discipline them than it is the government.

I'm not trusting them with health care any more than I'm trusting them with auto repairs. All they are to do is pass health care charges on to the government instead of to the customer for payment. They are not filtering the charges. For 2% of a trillion dollars, I am sure they will do it properly!

I would willingly allow the government to choose a doctor for me, since I have no access to care now. But why would they, and how could they? I have to admit that at first I thought Obama would give us something better than the Clintons did. Even if by some miracle his "public option" gets through Congress, it will not be better. I've seen and heard enough of it to know that Industry likes it, so by default, it's bad for us.
I haven't been prone to all-or-nothingism lately, but in this case, I am. This bill needs a stake in its heart and we need to send Obama and Congress their marching orders.
Problem is, the ballot box no longer works. It will take more to get something for us. Much more. MUCH more.

Remember that over 10 years the entire health care bill would be $27 trillion (w/o considering inflation). Just for round numbers, with 33% overhead for insurance and pharma that would be a haul of some $9 trillion. You give me $9 trillion, I'll be glad to give back $0.3 Trillion.

With 52 million w/o health care one might think that the crowd in DC might consider foregoing their vacations and doing their constitutional job, the one, remember, working for the people? When society chooses to be indifferent to what's affecting them, the pols and the monied elites controlling them like puppets are ready to cash in on our weakness. This morning, at a picnic which I went to with my friends, when someone at some rally for Obama was holding an poster cheering for his so-called "reform" package on health care, I went up there and asked one of them in the crowd what they really knew about Obama's deal and she said this "Well, it may not be perfect but we're getting there." I asked her about single payer health care and she said "Never heard of it." I tried to explain it to her but she wouldn't understand it and thought that I was a foreigner. Again, I was trying to explain when some unknown Obamabot creep came up from behind and punched me in the face and chest for questioning Obama's "reform" package ! If I didn't know any better, I'd say he was a coward in denial mode to admit that he was not happy with the way things were going in this administration so far so he had to find someone to scape goat. This had me thinking again that maybe society needs to give up their macho egotistical denial mode and acknowledge that yes we're not really happy and that no we really don't know what we're doing or supporting. It may appear to hurt at first but the sooner we overcome our denial and indifference, the better our chances that we'll elect the correct pols and turn to the correct solutions and maintain a flourishing society instead of the current languishing one. I'm sorry if I'm not making much sense today but wanted to share my thoughts with reference to what Nader said and the comments as well and perhaps make a connection of a solution as to what can be done about it. :=(

I didn't bother to hit him back since a couple of supporters in the crowd pulled him back plus I didn't want to risk getting into any more trouble lest I get beaten up even more or even arrested. I know I probably shouldn't have bothered even asking one of these supporters a simple question. I didn't even indicate who I voted for or that I despise a lot of what Obama was doing. I just tried to explain something plain and simple and I was non-political about it. That prick will have to learn his lesson the hard way should Obama's plan succeed in passing but I doubt it. If there's one thing I learned about these political rallies, it's that some of the people engaged in the rallies don't even know what the policy they're rallying for or against is really all about but instead repeat the lies and sound bites without even thinking about it. If thinking makes us criminals, then we shall be proud criminals and take our chances in the rain. Today was just an unlucky day. I'm not giving up finding people to discuss the issues with. It's our duty to inform and enlighten IMO if we're going to win our cause and no thoughtless coward shall stop us from marching forward.

You didn't see the video posted on here a couple weeks back about that single-payer supporter with a bullhorn in the crowd of union public-option supporters, and one grabbed him around the shoulders, and another demanded to his face he 'shut the f*** up'?
And there are never agitators in crowds either, right? It's pretty much taken for granted on this site that anytime a rally or protest gets violent, a 'government instigator' caused it.

I reminded a friend, who's a diehard Obama supporter refusing to criticize ANYthing about the man, that he supported single payer in 2003. I asked why, now that we had this ideal situation he described then, the president is not considering single payer. I said, "Democrats control the WH and Congress." "My friend said they don't have control-- the Blue Dogs and the Republicans are getting in the way. Obama is fighting for health care reform; he's met with many people." I reminded him that Obama has NOT invited single payer advocates to the meetings. You can't reason with these people. They see what they want to see.

Reid, Pelosi and Obama announced today that now that they have a super majority, in order to pass any progressive legislation, they now need a super-DUPER majority of 100% of the Senate. Otherwise, they'll be forced to stick to pro-corporate legislation.
So all readers here - reach into your pockets and donate to the Democrats so that we can get that super-duper majority.
And don't forget to re-elect Obama, who advocates "change you can believe in". And "the audacity of hope"!
It seems that it takes time to find out if they voted for Obama on the issues or just that same old "personality" factor just like those who voted for Raygun, Clinton, and Dubya. If there's one thing I notice between both sides that can't be reasoned with, it's that they invent lame-brained excuses to cover up for such bad behavior. It will be interesting to see how Obama tries to pull it off in 2012 when he runs as an incumbent for the first time unlike 2004 and 2008.
I thought I would post here one of those Obama-fest articles from HuffPo. You've got to read the comments of these people. It is very clear where the problems lie. It is a cult of personality. In many ways they are worse than Bushies, and there's so many more of them. As I read the comments I wonder if these people bother to follow any of the policies that he is implementing or supporting. Read what they do when anyone disagrees about Obama or the beloved Michelle.

Reading the comments, I couldn't tell the difference between the Joe the Plumber Republicans and the Obamabot Democrats. Trying to reason with those commenters is too many to tackle and would give me a migraine of a headache. I just read them lightly and shook my head and then laughed and giggled at those braindamaged zombies until I nearly wet myself. :)
Between the Obama cultists and the rightwing hicks, the former will stab you from behind while the latter you'll know they're coming.

Allow me to address your last sentence first: I disagree. People learn when they WANT to learn, when they are ready to learn. Most Americans simply don't want to learn. What we want is to be handed everything on a silver platter. And, by the way, we want it now. Many years of believing all that American exceptionalism crap has drummed that into our heads and now we believe we are entitled. Time for the American people to do some growing up and start stretching ourselves to learn.
As far as Obama being anything other than what he is...well, who knows. We can all go "coulda, shoulda, woulda," but Obama is Obama. I'd love for him to be the embodiment of everything I believe in, but he isn't. Only I am and I'm not interested in being president (now, emperor of the world...).

While we certainly need to get this under control, who knows how long it would take for capitalism to wile its way into a government run health insurance system before the insurance industries would be right back in it? He did not, and you are right. He should have and that alone has shown many that he never was for single payer. When this latest attempt to fix health insurance in the US fails (either way it goes, it will fail), the people need to rise up. Obama may be a politician, but he is smart and he is not evil (yeah, yeah, I know. No he's not.) This wall is thick and tough and we must keep hammering away at it. This one issue has the capacity to knock this country flat on its back, and Obama knows this. If he doesn't get it this time, we need to make him see it. If he won't see it, he will deserve to get his ass kicked out of office. (That will make some folks here happy).

The only reform Obama hopes to see is mandated coverage to incerase the coffers of his corporate masters in the insurance industry. True reform = SINGLE PAYER. Anything else is sheeple food.
I think we need to be careful in our language. There may be other options than single payer that would solve our health insurance dilemma other than single payer. What we really need is universal health coverage. Some countries have single payer, some don't, but civilized countries insure all without the need for employers to do it.
That's what we should be demanding!

I agree except for one thing. Universal health coverage better not be like the one in MA unless you want to be treated like cars in front of Big Insurance. In some states, you have to already have auto insurance or else you cannot register your vehicle. Imagine employers denying you employment simply because you didn't allow Big Insurance to rip you off. MA care is NOT universal health coverage despite their slick language to make it look like it is.
I'm not that familiar with the MA system, so can't really comment.
What I meant is that there may be options that work better in the US than in other countries, and we shouldn't close our minds to them. For instance, how about a 51 payer system with each state administering the coverage while the Fed oversees it. I have no idea whether that would work, but we should allow the possibility and latitude so that we can work something out. The Canadian system is what works in Canada. The UK system is what works in the UK. Etc. As long as our aim is to, A. cover every American equally, and B. not have health insurance coverage dependent on jobs, I don't care if it's administered by Bernie Madoff. Well, I jest, but really, there are options we can't foresee, so we shouldn't close our minds to them.
I like that idea of connecting the state and the federal levels together on universal coverage. I shall keep that idea in mind for future discussions. Thank you Ted. :)
What you have described about the states administering coverage while the Fed oversees it is, in fact similar to the Canadian system, which is provincial, not completely national.
We will never get ANY system to work in the United States because too many people don't want one that works, no matter what it might be. They want one that makes money for them.
Do some investigating of the Massachusetts plan - the state is foundering under the load, many people are losing access to health care, facilities for the poor are being closed because the governor needs the funds to feed to the uncontrolled insurance and drug companies.

How do we get information to the masses? News no longer informs. The only information out there is on shows like Bill Moyers Journal, which only a small fraction of people will ever see. There is zero information regarding what single payer is, what the public option is, or the demerits of private insurance (although many of us who have it already know its many shortcomings).
The process is happening in an information vacuum. And this rally will go unreported to the nation.

All of the countries of Europe which have national health care for all of their citizens have far lower teen pregnancy rates, far lower teen venereal disease rates, and far lower teen abortion rates than does the United States. Tell a "social conservative" this fact and you will get silence and a scowl.
When I hear the words "reform . . . the heath care system" on NPR, I think, "What health care system?"
Now that Obama and the rest of the Government has failed to produce a health care plan that will reduce costs or provide equal access, the biggest question becomes what price will be paid by society for this failure. The only reason why "health care reform" is being talked about at all by the ruling corporations and the Government is the apparent truths that the sky high cost of health care has (1) contributed to the current economic collapse and (2) might very well prevent an economic recovery.
Incidentally, when rich people on television talk about "economic recovery," they are talking about a recovery for rich people (through stock market gains and so forth) not about a true economic recovery that obviously would have to include a large number of jobs being created. But in fact, for the first time in history, the US Government has recently been dropping hints that there might be an economic recovery with few or no jobs created! Seriously though, any jobless recovery would be a recovery only in the fantasy world of very rich people.
So going forward, the relevant question becomes whether the failure to fix health will keep the economy from recovering and, specifically, will the failure prevent jobs from being created. If the number of US jobs does not rise anywhere near enough to cover the need for jobs (or continues to drop) for years and years, while the population continues to grow, (more slowly due to reduced immigration) then I for one don't see how the system as a whole can continue indefinitely.
This "doomsday" scenario would represent a systemic collapse on a scale seldom if ever seen in the world, and I assume that the relevant question would then become when a new political order would be established, not if. The US Constitution or at least some parts of it would probably be history in any doomsday scenario.
Although the new order could be less right wing than the existing one, I suppose it could be more obviously fascist than the current one, also. The US population appears to be too inherently right wing and too "dumbed down" for there ever to be Social Democracy" there, at least within the next 50 years or so. However, on the other hand, the virtually unprecedented scale of the very possibly developing systemic and essentially permanent economic collapse is a wild card factor that, to me as an economist anyway, makes possible almost any future political order, including a more progressive one.

It is indeed very upsetting and frustrating to see how indifferent our electorate has become. I used to often not know whether to laugh or cry at our dysfunctional electorate but like many others in my boat, I am trying to find a way to help break down the indifference. One thing I thought of was getting your friends, neighbors, family, etc ... to vote with their open minds and hearts on the issues rather than be so closed-minded and vote on the party and/or based on the corporate media trash talk and polls. Don't give up the fight and thank you for understanding Nader well. If only more people in your state and mine (MO) and others as well could do the same.
I have read a lot of blogs and seen many programs denigrating single payer national health care systems. They seem to come from people that have no personal experience with such systems or a vested interest in the current system. Numerous studies have established that single payer national health care systems cost about half of our system while providing better health care as measured by outcome such as infant mortality, longevity, hospital mistakes etc. My family has personal experience with health care systems in England, Germany, Norway and USA from living in those countries. I would not hesitate one moment to choose any of their systems over ours (USA). It is difficult to understand why systems demonstrated to be better than ours, no matter which criteria you use to compare them, are not seriously considered here in the USA. Are we that misinformed, brainwashed, uneducated, dogmatically tied to capitalist philosophy (that in this case is failing), not as smart as citizens in other countries, or is it that it was not invented by the self-proclaimed greatest nation on earth. Most likely it is that our politicians are bought off by the corporate beneficiaries of the current system.
A viable health care system must also be decoupled from ones place of work like the rest of the world. This will help make our industry more competitive, and encourage employee mobility into new economic activities to help spawn and expand new businesses.
The bottom line, born out by facts and not emotions or dogma, is that single payer national health care systems work better for more people at lower cost than our for profit system.

Our country has been taken over by the corporations. And they aren't our worst enemy. They are doing what corporations do. Maximizing profits with no other considerations. They're supposed to be regulated but that's become history. Our worst enemy is our own political class. They are supposed to represent the people who vote them into office, but they have betrayed us and represent the corporations instead. So now we have private corporations writing laws which Congress rubber stamnps without even reading them and corporations owned by Republicans counting our votes using secret (proprietary) codes. It's become a corporate country. We are rapidly being reduced to wage slaves and cannon fodder.
But I've been talking about starting a new political party, the Main Street Party, and everyone I meet loves it. Even a businessman and a farmer I spoke with want to get involved and are willing to work to make it happen. No social issues, just economic issues that 60% of Americans agree on. People know things are awry, but don't know what they can do about it. So they're excited when presented with concrete steps. We can take back our country one Congressional district at a time, running candidates who take no corporate money.

Ten years ago, I moved to Sweden, from Massachusetts. My mother in law, who by the way, had a quadruple by pass, and guess what, she's alive and we are not in debt. I don't lose sleep at night worrying about health care for me or any of my relatives. About three years ago I had a hernia operation, that cost me in, American terms about 200 bucks. Yes, we pay very high taxes, but, at least we get something from it and not just health care.
On the other hand, Americans pay fairly high taxes and get zilch and I mean ZILCH! Why don't you folks wake up and throw the bums out? Insurance companies should have no business being in health care. I have insurance for my house and car, but not for my health or my childrens health.
Americans seem to be dumber than doorknobs. Trillions for war and little for its people. Get a grip.
Americans are finally faced with the contradictions implicit in their social/economic system. You can't expect them to embrace collective action to solve social problems immediately. It will take twenty years or so, at least, to effect the kind of change most Europeans can understand.
I support Obama's public healthcare option because I feel it is the only choice that can possibly succeed in this conservative country. It will eventually outcompete the corporate model for healthcare and, through artificial selection, will come to dominate the field.

If you listen to ordinary blokes around you, you will hear the echoes of thirty years of persuasive manipulation: "No, I don't want government to play a greater role in healthcare or anything else."
