GOP House Members Call for Investigation of Muslim Political Activity
A group of House Republicans is calling for an investigation into whether a leading American Muslim advocacy group tried to "spy" on congressional offices by placing interns on key security committees.
Rep. Sue Myrick, North Carolina Republican, cited an internal January 2007 memo in which the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) discussed placing Muslim interns on Capitol Hill to "focus on influencing congressmen responsible for policy that directly impacts the American Muslim community."
CAIR said it had a particular interest in influencing the judiciary, intelligence and homeland security committees. . . . Mrs. Myrick and Republican Reps. John Shadegg of Arizona, Paul Broun of Georgia and Trent Franks of Arizona called Wednesday for an investigation by the House sergeant-at-arms into whether CAIR was successful in planting congressional interns.
"If an organization that is connected to or supports terrorists is running influence operations or planting spies in key national security-related congressional offices, I think this needs to be made known," Mr. Broun said.
CAIR is a non-profit organization of American citizens who are Muslim and their "mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding." They stand accused of plotting to influence members of Congress and trying to help interns obtain positions in Congress in order to advance their political agenda. That's consistent with what virtually every political advocacy group in the nation does; it's normally called activism and democracy. But because, in this case, it's a group of Muslims who are doing this, these House Republicans are depicting it as some sort of nefarious espionage plot against the U.S. that demands a criminal investigation. The Fox News headline screams:
All that from an "internal memo" they uncovered which discusses how CAIR can help Muslim-Americans obtain internship positions with Congressional committees (click to enlarge):
"Muslim interns in Congressional offices" -- frightening! Look at this repulsive innuendo, from Rep. Franks:
While the Republicans said they did not know of specific legislation that CAIR had affected, Franks, a Judiciary Committee member, said he wouldn’t be surprised if it was trying to amend the Patriot Act.
“One of the target policies that they might be concerned about is the Patriot Act itself -- those things that give us the greatest tools to be able to surveil those conversations outside of this country . . . and I think organizations like CAIR would like to diminish that.”
Patriot Act reforms have long been advocated by what The New York Times called "an unlikely coalition of liberal civil-rights advocates, conservative libertarians, gun-rights supporters and medical privacy advocates." Several Senators -- including the Democrats' second-highest ranking member, Dick Durbin -- just voted (unsuccessfully) to impose new limits on that law. But when "America's largest Islamic civil liberties group" takes the same position, these crazed, blatantly bigoted House Republicans spit out McCarthyite smears trying to imply that they're working from within to help Terrorists attack America. It's nothing less than an attempt to criminalize organized political activity by and on behalf of American Muslims.
Just to underscore how extremist the House GOP caucus is, this hysteria is all based on a new book entitled "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America." That's the source which these House members are using. In fact, one of the GOP House members, Rep. Sue Myrick of North Carolina, wrote the foreword to the book. One of the two authors of that book, Dave Gaubatz, maintains this website, where he's hocking the book through Paypal. Here's his mission statement at the top of the page:
The donations will assist in exposing Islamic terrorist operations in America. The goal of the organizations: An Islamic Ummah (Nation) Worldwide, Under Islamic Sharia Law. These goals are widely distributed across America, yet ignored by most of our politicians and the Department of Homeland Security.
The entire site is filled with the most extreme and repugnant anti-Muslim paranoia imaginable, claiming that "CAIR represents the ideology of terrorist groups"; warning that "CAIR places 'insiders' into Congressional offices in order to push the CAIR and Islamic terrorist agendas"; displaying a photograph of Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim-American elected to Congress, with this caption: "One of your leading elected officials (supporter of CAIR) with researcher Chris Gaubatz. How much information do we have on Carson and Congressman Keith Ellison?; and warning that "Young Muslim children are being taught across America to engage in violence against non Muslims and Muslims who do not uphold Sharia law." It warns:
Unless we change the concerns I mentioned, our country will soon evolve into a Socialist country, Sharia law will continue to 'creep' into our society, Islamic based terrorist supporting organizations will continue the implementation of achieving the final objective of an Islamic Ummah in America and worldwide.
The website is filled with illiterate and unhinged rants like this:
Mr. Obama was a self admitted cocaine user, alcohol, and chose friends (Reverend Wright) who hated America and were terrorists (Bill Ayers). Note: More could be named. Based on this and this alone, this is not the role model we want our children to follow, nor to watch on TV at school. But why do leading media from the right and left never speak of Obama's drug days? Because many of them have had their own drug days. . . .
It is time leaders in our country begin speaking out and simply telling the American people the basic truth why Obama and his friends are not repeted [sic] and American parents do not consider him to be a role model for our children. His primary method of resolving national and internatonal [sic] disputes he as generated) is to invite offended parties to the White House to conume [sic] alcoholic beverages. Again, not the method most parents would use to resolve serious situations and not what we want our children to view as an appropriate method. Dave G.
He previously called Obama a "crack head" and wrote that "a vote for Hussein Obama is a vote for Sharia Law."
Gaubatz -- a civilian agent who worked for The U.S. Air Force's Office of Special Investigations -- was also the source for the "bombshell story" from supreme Muslim-hater Melanie Phillips, who wrote a 2007 piece for the British Spectator with this screaming headline, immediately promoted by leading right-wing blogs: "I found Saddam's WMD Bunker!" It details how Gaubatz personally found bunkers where Saddam's WMDs were kept in Iraq, but "the [Bush] administration failed to act on his information, ‘lost’ his classified reports and is now doing everything it can to prevent disclosure of the terrible fact that, through its own incompetence, it allowed Saddam’s WMD to end up in the hands of the very terrorist states against whom it is so controversially at war." As a result, Saddam's WMD are now in the hands of Syria, and the world has been fooled into believing that he had none.
In 2006, Gaubatz created a project called "Mapping Sharia in America", the purpose of which was to create a comprehensive map of every mosque and Islamic school in the U.S. This is what he wrote:
It is our task to conduct an extensive mapping of all the Islamic day schools, mosques, and other identifiable organizations in the US and to determine which ones teach or preach Islamic law, Sharib.
This investigation will also map the leadership of these Muslim organizations and their other affiliations. We will also attempt to uncover any related businesses used or run by the organizations as fronts for money laundering and other illicit activities.
Finally, we will examine and map any potential targets situated near these organizations, such as city, county, and federal government buildings, schools and universities, US military installations, major utility or infrastructure sites (i.e., nuclear installations, pipelines, water supply, etc.), and transportation hubs.
Back in 2007, the libertarian Jim Henley detailed more facts demonstrating that Gaubatz is a "paranoid, racist loon." Just read some of that. Or this.
This is the ranting, insane hatemonger who House Republicans are now using as their expert source to demand an investigation into CAIR's villainous plot to place interns on Congressional committees. It would be darkly humorous if it weren't so ugly and dangerous. These House members highlight CAIR's status as an unindicted co-conspirator in a Muslim charity case without noting that one of the most powerful groups in Congress has actually been directly involved in an espionage case against the U.S., while numerous other corporations which receive substantial largesse from Congress have been convicted of all sorts of serious wrongdoing.
This is the precise rank fear-mongering and compulsive need for an Internal Enemy that has driven American policy and political culture for the entire decade. Brave Congressional Democrats love to spend their time formally condemning people. If anything merits formal condemnation, it's this foul Republican witch hunt.
UPDATE: As sphodros notes in comments, here's a chart reflecting the religious affiliation of members of the current Congress:
89.3 percent of the members of Congress are Christian, 8.4% are Jewish, and a grand total of 2 members (.4%) are Muslim. Their representation on the chart (the green section) is so small they're practically invisible. Muslims comprise .6% of the American population. Yet these people are running around screaming about the imminent "Islamization of America" and imposition of Sharia law and calling for criminal investigations because a few interns on Congressional Committees -- American citizens -- might be Muslim and are therefore "spies." These are members of the U.S. House of Representatives doing that. And they're not alone:
In another conversation, [Joe Lieberman] told me that he was reading "America Alone," a book by the conservative commentator Mark Steyn, which argues that Europe is succumbing, demographically and culturally, to an onslaught by Islam, leaving America friendless in its confrontation with Islamic extremism [GG: that book also flirts with explicit advocacy of anti-Muslim genocide].
"The thing I quote most from it is the power of demographics, in Europe particularly," Lieberman said. "That’s what struck me the most. But the other part is a kind of confirmation of what I know and what I’ve read elsewhere, which is that Islamist extremism has an ideology, and it’s expansionist, it’s an aggressive ideology. And the title I took to mean that we Americans will have ultimate responsibility for stopping this expansionism."
They're breeding like rabbits, want to take over everything (through the power of interns on Congressional Committees), and we must stop them. It's the solemn challenge of our generation.

Show AllDear Lord, please, please forgive these wackos for they are completely off their rocker.
On a more serious note, I wonder if our Congress has the nerve or decency to censure these "representatives" of the people. Frankly, doesn't say much for the people these bigots represent. On the other, perhaps it says everything about the people they claim to represent.
why do progressives support Islam? Enemies of my enemies are my friends? Do progressives like how women are treated in Islam? Gays? Progressives bash Christianity at every chance. maybe the progressives fear Islam?
Muslim nations throughout the world are beset with religious extremism, much like that afflicting the US as documented in this article, but financed, organized, armed, and trained by American conservatives -- who then find in them an enemy threat requiring measures more draconian than martial law.
"Perhaps it is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged to provisions against danger real or pretended from abroad."
--James Madison in a letter to Thomas Jefferson in May 1798
Theowl:
So in your view, calling someone out for being a bigot is supporting Islam?
I take it your position is that Muslim organizations should just keep their noses out of Congress. I hope you also hold that position in the case of the Zionist lobby.
The US government massively oppresses Muslims at home and abroad.
Consequently, fighting oppression constitutes support for Muslims, though it does not constitute agreement with every idea that anyone anywhere happens to call a Muslim position.
Many progressives are Christian.
Of course, that would not necessarily involve agreeing with everything that anyone anywhere happens to put forth as a Christian position, now would it?
.
This seems as good a place as any to mention that the conservatively religious women I have met outside the US and Europe did not and do not generally envy the positions of women in Europe and the US.
In no instance that I encountered did their opinions involve thinking themselves worthless or inferior or naturally subordinate or desirous of masculine guidance - a notion they tended to find downright hilarious.
They thought American women had cut themselves a raw deal, and they supported the opinion pretty well. To synthesize a thread from snippets of discussion with various people, the argument runs about like this:
- American women are subjected to lots of violence
- Working for exploitative bosses does not liberate
- Working all day and THEN arriving home to housework sucks
- American women do not get to raise their children
- Serial monogamy leaves women the kids and diapers
- Loss of extended family leaves women without normal support
They do feel that they should vote, work when and where they find it convenient, own property, have autonomy, and receive respect for what they do.
But they don't seem to find American women or men particularly liberated or liberating even when we're not shooting at them or trying to purchase their means of livelihood.
They don't seem to think we know what we're talking about.
Do we?
"This seems as good a place as any to mention that the conservatively religious women I have met outside the US and Europe did not and do not generally envy the positions of women in Europe and the US. "
Did you talk to the women who were NOT conservatively religious? Why is the opinion of only the conservatively religious relevant?
"American women are subjected to lots of violence"
Compared to whom?
"
- Working for exploitative bosses does not liberate"
Maybe not. But again, compared to what?
"
- Serial monogamy leaves women the kids and diapers"
Did you ask these religious women their thoughts on serial polygamy that is only legal for men? Did you ask these conservatively religious women how many diapers their husbands changed?
As Lingum (October 15th, 2009 2:29 pm) indicated, Glenn Greenwald was supporting the rights of U.S. citizens to lobby Congress and condemning the representatives who would deny them that right. Equating that stance with support for Islam is like decrying critics of U.S. war policy for siding with the terrorists.
"Do progressives like how women are treated in Islam? Gays? Progressives bash Christianity at every chance. "
Progressives in the US, in the West, bash Christianity at every chance, because in the US, in the West, it is the saintly Christians who are the bigots, who would treat anyone other than non straight (white) men as chattel, who would treat women as child bearing maids to be kept barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, who would deprive anyone other than non straight (white) men as less than full citizens.
Since you appear to have it missed it, from the article,
"Muslims comprise .6% of the American population. "
It isn't the 0.6% of the American population that is trying to repress the rights of women, of LGBTs.
Progressives don't "support" Islam, whatever that means.
Progressives support the freedom to believe. Or, NOT, to believe.
Also, from the article,
"he libertarian Jim Henley detailed more facts demonstrating that Gaubatz is a "paranoid, racist loon." Just read some of that. Or this."
Notice the word "Libertarian"? Not "progressive". LIBERTARIAN. People who believe in liberty, including the liberty to believe in whatever they want to believe, or NOT to believe.
That is what scares authoritarian right wing believers.
Furthermore, are you conceding that right wingers such as you are racists? Just saying.
oh, but zionists are just fine and dandy--you just can't have enough of those shit-heads can we.
Muslim Mafia? The Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America?
–Godspeed! That can't come too soon. One only wishes it were true rather than the psychopathic hysteria, state terror and racist demagoguery sponsored by the baleful confluence of Christianity and a corrupted Judaism.
The introduction of various peoples with different religions into the United States is a much to wished for development if it undermines the dominant terror modality that is Anglo-Saxon Americanism.
Perhaps not so strangely, I have never met an American Muslim I did not like as a human being; quite the contrary is the case with Christian Americans–where even the allegedly 'progressive' ones, seem to lack an all inclusive humanism, separate from their religious convictions. Something always seems to spoil it.
Alternatives to what presently exists? Try anything. It can only be an improvement.
Any development which subverts the malign influence of Christianity and Zionist Judaism in America should be considered a 'blessing.'
Christianity and Zionism must be smashed! Then sift through the ashes. –(Jill Bains)
Instead of smashing Christianity, it would be helpful to get these crusading types to sit down and read about Jesus' life and teachings. I imagine they'd be deeply perplexed, but it might get them to change their minds or to at least stop calling themselves Christians. Either outcome would be welcome.
Its a Islamic Plot to deprive congressmen of Intern bumboys.
"The only means of strengthening one's intellect is to make up one's mind about nothing, to let the mind be a thoroughfare for all thoughts." - John Keats
If these Repubs are in a snit about imagined conspiracies and espionage subverting all things American, this is the perfect time to call for a thorough investigation of the Sible Edmonds allegations of nuclear espionage involving several members of Congress. Senators Leahy and Grassley, an investigator at DOJ, and members of the FBI have all found her extremely credible. Daniel Ellsberg calls her story more explosive than the Pentagon Papers. Just google Daniel Ellsberg Sibel Edmonds to get a leg up on all the info on this over at Bradblog. Let's raise a hew and cry!!!Let's pull another "Acorn" on these jokers and use their cries of "WOLF!!! as the starting point for demanding meaningful investigation and acountability for actual crimes that have been committed in the halls of Congress.

Mr. Greenwald is a meticulous researcher and helps readers connect the dots. However, I believe that due to his logic and interest in fair-minded debates, he is missing something that's become obvious to me (and others). It is the belief in "End Times," 45 million devotees "strong." Some of these "devout" fundamentalist Christians have been taught, and are now convinced that Islam really constitutes the enemy, that a war is prophesied for the Middle East. Their view of current events is utterly narrowed by these religious lenses that demonize Muslims and truly see them as the enemy. Worst of all is that these people, and keep in mind they are largely the ones who are pro-war and anti-abortion (calling THAT right to life), actually countenance the nonsensical idea that God created the world in a matter of days, and that the geological record is in error... believe this war is ORDAINED. They think by being on "the right side" they secure their seat (new version of the old church's selling of Indulgences) in heaven.
It is THAT mentality which is circulating this memo, ever interested in predation on "other." As if the Source that Created it all is, or could be, a God of exclusion... those that pushed for war and the destruction of others are going to have a lot of explaining to do when they leave their mortal shells behind.
A thought on you comment Sioux Rose--Many of those fervantly religous people also think of any battle against any Muslim nation as the New Crusade. When I told one of those home schooler moms that I worried about her two sons having joined the military and would be in harms way, her answer almost floored me, "We are Christians and if they get killed, they will go straight to Heaven". Those words could have come from a mother 800 years ago when she sent her children off on the Childrens Crusade. The Army recruiters snap these kids up so easily.

AArky: I am aware of this, and keep in mind Bush used the term "A crusades," early on, then he sent his brownshirts to arrest lots of Arabs, and the whole 911 fear frenzy got kicked into a higher gear, and next you know there's "The Patriot Act," and to kill the nebulous "Them" over there, so they don't come here, and close the borders, and build the great fence on the Southern front (another "Enclosure Movement"), as these "deciders" grant themselves impunity while they fabricate a set of torture camps for anyone caught in the awful driftnets that were mostly done as Hollywood style stage props to convince the IDIOTS at home who bought the whole bogus 911 pre-fab story, that "something" was being done to "preserve their freedoms."
If life today was on the same moral, spiritual, and economic track as the mode of the l970's, do you think if a writer penned an elaborate testament of actual events in the USA today that it would be placed under non-fiction? This is such a bad "movie" that's "featured" in our land of the no-longer free, that it does not seem POSSIBLE. Endless $ to bankers while over a million go homeless? Endless sums to wars based on LIES and the senseless slaughter of THOUSANDS, but no $ for health care? Schools falling behind, bridges collapsing, a city left in raw sewage... but make sure those bankers get the multi-million dollar bonuses, direct infusion from the treasury, i.e. WORKERS' money! And make sure those private army numbers get paid quadruple what the "poor soldier" earns.
The impossible has become U.S.!
That was my first reply.
If I recorded down the events of today and went back in time to the 1950s, my work would be cheap fiction in the USA or state propaganda in the Communist bloc.
Similarly, any archaeologist looking back on this era would likely see us the same way we viewed the Persian Empire; mighty and "tolerant" of vassal states, but only when the vassals acknowledged their vassalage.
Yes. A good many of these groups were posting reasons why they felt Saddam Hussein was the "Anti_Christ".
Now the problem is the Anti_christ is supposed to be some great power that will drag the entire world into warfare and ruin. It was quite obvious that after Iraq fell Hussein could not possibly be this great evil.
That is the strange thing about FAITH however when used instead of reason. While Saddam ruled they had FAITH he was the Anti Christ and to all the followers every read of the biblical prophecies "Fit" Saddam hussein as did the working of his birth date and other numbers. Their faith creates this all power MONSTER as it does this all powerful being...
When it all falls apart....
Rather then question their belief system...
They find another Anti Christ. Sort of like they do when they keep creating a new GOd. One that believes in free markets...
I dunno.
I don't view this as (misguided) belief in Christianity; rather it seems to me that this is the usual right wing fear mongering that has been going on for a long time, the deliberate stoking up of fear and hate of the Other. Whether the Other is the Communists, the blacks, women (who aren't barefoot and pregnant chattel), the Jews (much more so in the past, but there are still those on the right who can't conceal their anti-semitism), the Japanese (in the 80s when there was much fear mongering about Japanese buying up the whole world) the Chinese (now, and also in the past), the Gays, the Socialists Fascist Communists, and now the Muslims.
You have to understand that these members of Congress are merely doing what their Israei lobbyists tell them to do. It might also be enlightening to find out how many Jewish members of Congress have dual citizenship with Israel. Would these Republican Congressmen be willing to do a survey of how many members of Congress have Jewish staffers or how many lobbyists from the various Zionist groups visit each month to "educate" them. I think not! The Jews have a word to describe the actions of these members of Congress. "Chutzpah". The Israelis and their dangerous Zionist policies have infiltrated our Congress, government, and main stream media for the last 60 years. It's to the point that black is white, and up is down and the Israelis can do no wrong.
These neo cons are so off the wall it's pathetic!

Thanks for the expose, Glenn. Don't forget, until just recently GOP fundamentalist crazies like these were actually in charge of the DC beltway legislative asylum.
Maybe I should write my Congressional rep, and ask for the IRS to investigate the 501c(3) nonprofit status of the Federalist Society, while simultaneously having the House sergeant at arms investigate whether this shadowy outfit has been engaged in a long running conspiratorial plot "planting Congressional interns" to further their peculiar ideological agenda, particularly targeting members of the Judiciary Committee.
Bill from Saginaw
I think it is interesting that Muslim people are very much like Christian,Jew and any other religious group. They consist of conservatives and progressives but I believe, ironically mostly conservatives. Many of the Muslims supported George W. Bush's policies.Bush had many policies that were more like Iran's than like other developed nations such as the death penalty, laws against abortion, faith based charities,(although he connected many Islamic charities unjustly to terrorism) control of some of the media and torture, imprisoned without charges, surveillance of citizens, solving problems by using violence. The problem is that some Muslim men that had progressive views have been imprisoned by the Bush Administration through the courts. The President smeared them as connected to terrorist in the media giving the jury little choice except to convict the Muslim men to long prison terms.Congress should call for an investigation into that cruelty.
Let's see.
AIPAC sponsored and paid-for interns to influence Congressional members voting for Israel, the murderers of US Navy personnel - Of course.
Interns sponsored and paid for by corporate lobbyists to insert tax loopholes favorable to big business - Why not?
Interns wined and dined and provided by for-profit insurance companies to torpedo any health reforms - good business!
Muslims openly applying for intern positions to try to present a fairer depiction of Muslims to lawmakers - Kill'em!!!!!
Fortunately, a poll taken last month, comparing attitudes toward Muslims currently versus 6 years ago, show that more Americans think favorably of Muslims now than 6 years ago.
All this in spite of the rabid hate spewed from the mouths of these idiots.
The only conspiracy I know of is by the rabid dogs who call themselves Christians while not understanding one scintilla of what Jesus taught. These people would lynch Him for his message given half a chance.
Considering all the improprieties committed by the GOP in terms of voting fraud and illegal ties to corporations, I'm surprised the entire party apparatus aren't under investigation for unscrupulous political activity. Oh wait, that would expose most Democrats too.

Here is Addenda II by Glenn to the article in Salon
UPDATE II: Here's what Rep. Sue Myrick said in 2003 about the internal Terrorist threat:
In remarks about domestic security threats, Rep. Sue Myrick of Charlotte said, "Look at who runs all the convenience stores across the country". . .
Myrick’s comments came during a speech to the conservative Heritage Foundation last week about what she called Americans’ lack of readiness to deal with future terrorist attacks. During a question-and-answer session, she spoke about danger within the country.
"You know, and this can be misconstrued, but honest to goodness (husband) Ed and I for years, for 20 years, have been saying, 'You know, look at who runs all the convenience stores across the country.' Every little town you go into, you know?" . . .
But Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, said such comments are part of "a very disturbing trend" of bigotry.
“Now we’ve got people saying everybody who works at the 7-Eleven who has a swarthy complexion is a potential threat,” he said.
And now, Myrick is insisting that "CAIR [is] trying to infiltrate the offices of members of Congress by placing interns in the offices." Infiltrate -- she's talking about American citizens. The U.S. Congress and the country belong to CAIR members every bit as much as they belong to Myrick and her constituents. CAIR is going to impose Sharia law on the U.S. by activating its sleeper-interns on Congressional Committees. It's really hard to overstate how repugnant so many of the people in Congress are.
-- Glenn Greenwald
The really interesting piece of information hidden in this article is the elephant in the room. Seemingly Muslims make up .04% of the US population, Congress is .02% Muslim.
Whereas, Jews make up less than .02% of US population yet make up 8.4% of Congress; then there's AIPAC.
Israel has been caught out spying on the US on several occasions. Exactly who's kidding who?
Clearly this is all yah boo school playground politics, why don't these people grow up?
This is McCarthyism redux.
