Rest Easy, Kansas City: Israel to the Rescue
Apologists for Israel's incursion into Gaza have submitted a number of arguments to defend this military action -- from the contention that the Jewish state has the indubitable right to secure its existence by whatever means necessary, to the "what-would-you-do" proposition -- e.g., if your country were under rocket attack from across its borders.
Judging by the world's reaction to Israel's Gaza operation, these efforts to convince the world have had little effect. Horrors such as hundreds of Palestinians killed, the bombing of UN schools, the devastation of an impoverished land not even a third the size of Rhode Island, have persuaded non-Israelis, even if they have sympathy for the Promised Land, that the Israeli Defense Forces' (IDF) measures have been disproportionate, if not unwarranted and inhumane. Many throughout the globe, no matter their religious beliefs, would agree with the Vatican's statement that Israel has turned Gaza into a place resembling a concentration camp.
While Israel's current hasbara (PR/public diplomacy/propaganda/ "explanation") campaign has been a failure throughout much of the world (but does maintain domestic support for the Gaza war), there is one country where Israel continues to enjoy approval: the United States. A poll conducted in December suggests that "US support for Israel at 5-yr high" (to cite a Jerusalem Post headline). In recent weeks, however, cheerleading for Israel appears to be on the wane in the U.S., at least on the editorial pages of American media and in commentaries in the blogosphere.
Faced with this public-perception crisis, US-based pro-Israel mainstream-media apologists have recently engaged in a specially-made-for-the-USA, full-court-press PR campaign. It is based on the talking point that Israel, by striking at Hamas on its turf, has done the United States a favor, the suggestion being that Israel is sacrificing itself for your average American. Rest easy, Kansas City: Israel has come to your rescue.
Neocon William Kristol, for example, in a January 4 New York Times piece, suggests that "[a]n Israeli success in Gaza would be a victory in the war on terror," this being helpful "to any nation, like the United States, that is a target of Islamic terror." He then goes on to say that by taking on Hamas, which he considers Iran's proxy, "Israel's willingness to fight makes it more possible that the United States may not have to" -- against Iran, that is.
The Wall Street Journal, evidently singing from the same sheet of music as Mr. Kristol, argues (January 4) that "[m]uch as Mr. Obama takes office in a stronger position thanks to the Iraq surge, his foreign policy would also benefit from Israeli success in Gaza" by weakening Iran.
Meanwhile Martin Peretz, editor of the New Republic who, having claimed that the "message" of the Gaza offensive was "do not fuck with the Jews," proclaims (January 7) that Israel has helped the United States: "The I.D.F. has presented [Obama] with an opportunity to help pacify the area in a way that will advance a modest peace rather than sustain a volatile, if sometimes low-level of continuous military ping-pong."
Finally, there is the statement by Alan M. Dershowitz in The Washington Times (January 16) that unless "[t]he Hamas strategy is exposed and rejected in the marketplace of morality" (as Israel is doing), "it's coming to a theater (or school or hospital) near you."
So Israel, by killing innocent women and children "collaterally" in Gaza, is making the United States safe. One does not have to be an expert on the Middle East, however, to realize that the opposite is in fact the case. At tremendous cost to the US taxpayer at a time of worldwide hostility to the United States and a near-depression in America, Israel (the largest recipient of American foreign aid), is inflaming global anti-Americanism -- the kind of anti-Americanism that led to 9/11 -- by a deadly and costly intervention. One Israeli soldier in Gaza said: "I don't know what we are doing here. Purification maybe." To this honest statement I add: America does not need, or indeed should approve, Israel's "purification" in Gaza. A just peace, which takes far more work than war, should be the goal of both countries. That is the best way to protect the United States.

Show AllIf Israel keeps this up, the next major terrorist attack will be on Israeli soil and not in the US.
There is absolutely no need for the USA to fight Iran, despite Darth Viper's frenetic attempts to make Iran into our worst enemy. Darth Viper and neocon friends such as Poor William Kristol are public enemy number one. Iran has no ambition to encroach on any of its neighbors, or anyone on the planet. Rather Iran has spent the past 60 years defending itself from the relentless aggression of the US/UK/Israeli axis of evil. Remember US puppet dictator Shah of Iran?
Poor William Kristol and his demon peers are beating a dead horse. The tables are turned. Iran, with a united world against the US/UK/Israeli axis of evil, has taken the moral high ground away from the axis. Poor defenders! Poor William, what makes you so poor?
rtdrury. Hello. Iran just seeks to survive, thrive if left alone. However the morally-insane Israeli's ARE gonna Bomb Natanz. Soon. After a False-Flag provocation on a U.S. Naval vessel 'escalates' into an attempted "attack on the Homeland of Israel" (look for an 'Iranian Bomber' or 'Missile' coming at Tel-Aviv to be intercepted, it's charred wreckage 'proof' -The Pentagon 9-11? PA.?- of "Iran's attack on Israel.")
At this time Israel will protect the U.S. And the World from MORE Islamo-Fascism and Terror. Personally, I am Grateful to be Protected from Evile Arabs & Persians.
azjoe.
But 'purification' works this time too doesn't it? Hamas = demons = Palestinians generally and anyway 'children will just grow up to be terrorists' (I heard this said on Amy Goodman last week, interview of Israeli women in NY City). 'Purification' sounds about right in this pathological rationalization for a full-throated assault on Gaza known as genocide-is-okay-when-it's-for-a-good-cause.
Way back when:Alan Dershowitz was arguing that torture might be a good thing:as in "ticking time bomb". That was before we knew the Bush Admin. was doing torture. Sigh. A the time, I'd hoped his view was an isolated idea, just academic talk....
There was a time Alan Dershowitz did good work, such as in the 1960s when I observed a civil rights lawyer call Dershowitz for advice on a case. Sigh.
I think Dershowitz was lulled into a really lucrative offer by AIPAC and the Likud-minded nuts or something. Up to 2000, I saw him fighting like a liberal for the most part but for the past 8 years, he really has become more like David Horowitz all too often. I never taught politics or history but I can see that it would be tougher taking on those kind of professors than those who just don't teach their science courses correctly.
why are people like Peretz and Dershowitz working to convince people that Jews are not to be trusted?
kloro:To make it "Jews..not to be trusted" because you list two Jews saying what they are saying, is something James Carroll finds the source of in his groundbreaking book, "Constantine's Sword". I am posting it again, under your comment which is anti-Jew and he'll explain why: www.jamescarroll.net/Constantine.html.

Well said ,needed to be said.
Liberty and Justice for Dershowitz and ilk only, the others are not as Human.
Again - US Jews form 1.7% of the American population.
How does such a miniscule proportion wield so much power?
How about a pr blitz for the concepts of "Justice" and "abiding the law" and maybe even "doing the RIGHT thing" that involved major international War Crimes trials and major domestic investigations and trials that resulted in many criminals in several governments going to jail for a long time?
White phosphorous in Gaza, in Fallujah, burning our childrens bones. On T.V. looks like fireworks on Independance Day, our celebration. We should be looking forward he told us, we should not be looking back.
Nothing new under the sun, the "purification" quote actually comes from an Israeli soldier in the 2002 WB rampage "Operation Desert Shield", not the current Gaza one.
I have not seen like polls of The Canadian Publics attitude towards Israels attack on Gaza.
I know CUPE and several Organizations lik eit have issued statements claiming they are appalled at Israels actions and Our Governments shameful stand in that regard.
Both the major Political parties (Liberals Conservatives) seem to have publicly taken Israels stand here and the NDP are being more Neutral then they should be.
Press Editorials tend to take israels side.
ALL that said there have been rallies both protesting Israeli actions and supporting Israeli actions and those condemning said actions tend to be in dramaticly larger numbers.
With the press so tightly controlled by The Asper Family (Open Zionists) it my suspicion they wish to downplay the attitude of the PEOPLE Of Canada who seem to be far more better informed on what happens then they would like.
I have no speken to a single person who supports Israels position in my conversations.
PK
This is the same as the people saying shame on you to a Palestinian doctor whose three children were killed.
Israel doesnt really talk about the need for people to be tolerant and understanding, it talks about never letting jews be killed by Nazis again.
You have heard stanch pro israel people talk about the Sudan, but I cant help but think for some of them this is about reinforcing the idea that Muslims and arabs are evil.
Israel said 911 was good for it--it doesnt want peace and understanding with the arab world. It doesnt want them to have democracy, it doesnt care. It didnt care about blasting the hell out of Lebanon, doesnt care about killing international workers.
Its deranged--and its supporters are too.
So, why were Five Israeli Mossad Agents celebrating on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River on 9/11/2001? Yes, they were there and citizens called the police and the five were turned over to the FBI and later returned to Israel, as the leader of their group disappeared. Why were Israeli Mossad Agents living two blocks from two of the alleged terrorists in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for weeks? (Andreas Von Bulow,a former German Minister, "La CIA y 11 de Septiembre")......
Was 9/11 an inside job or was it a "False Flag Attack"? According to William Cooper and his radio report on June 28, 2001, "CNN had an interview with Osama Bin Laden. Here you have CNN able to find Bin Laden, but, the CIA has no idea where he is. In that interview, Bin Laden claimed that there would be an attack in the U.S soon and that he would be blamed." William Cooper was killed by police, in a Waco type attack, shortly after 9/11....
Why, when there has been proof that World Trade Center #7 went down with preset explosives, has there been no Independent Investigation? Why do, even the critics
avoid demanding an Independent Investigation?
Is it so hard to believe, after the deaths of over 1 million Iraqis and the Israeli Attacks in Gaza, that 3,000 deaths on 9/11 would just be Collateral Damage for the planners of the attacks of 9/11 and that the benefits they would reap would be in the TRILLONS and a "War That Would Never End"?
and also remember that immediately AFTER 9/11 Osama said he had nothing to do with it!
Maybe that is because OBL had nothing to do with 9/11. The FBI has been unable to determine charges against OBL for 9/11. This is the reason why the Bush Administration is not interested in finding OBL, because he would not be tried for 9/11. If this were to happen, who then would America blame for 9/11?

Never criticize a man until you've walked a mile in their moccasins Native American proverb.
Dershowitz: unless "[t]he Hamas strategy is exposed and rejected in the marketplace of morality" (as Israel is doing), "it's coming to a theater (or school or hospital) near you."
Now we're also supposed to think about moral decisions in a market context, like everything else in the world. "Marketplace morality" really means PR, and Israel already has that market cornered, doesn't it?
What a complete asshole.
The Israeli historian Benny Morris (proponent of the "some ethnic cleansings are good" line of thinking), who writes frequent op-eds for the New York Times, has also bemoaned the 'lack of enthusiasm among Americans "for wars in the Islamic lands"'.
See Phyllis Bennis www.ips-dc.org
See Avi Shlaim www.democracynow.org transcript of interview last week, Jan. 14,2009 free, online
Absolutely! Ms. Bennis' work at IPS is outstanding scholarship and I would second NYCartist's recommendations. Bennis' "Understanding the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict: A Primer" (available via the Institute for Policy Studies website) and Shlaim's "The Iron Wall" are both MUST-READ works!
The corporate-military agenda becomes acutely obvious when you realize you never see or hear intelligent, articulate people like Shlaim or Bennis in the corporate press; you'll only hear their voices (and, thereby, MY voice and I think a lot of YOUR voices) on independent media like Democracy NOW! Another good reason to send that donation to Link TV or Free Speech TV or Pacifica.

kgarry:Thanks. Pacifica's 5 stations raise their own money. Mine is WBAI 99.5FM in NYC, where I listen to DemocracyNow every weekday morning. www.wbai.org All day today they are doing M.L.King Jr specials and tomorrow, inauguration - both days of special fundraising to keep WBAI able to pay bills: the community noncommercial station, which does not take any corporate funding. All shows are archived, free and live streaming at WBAI. Premiums include books and CDs/DVDs. Amy Goodman was fundraising for WBAI this morning; it was her home station, where she was in the News Dept.,the "WakeUp Call" in the morning, and where DemocracyNow began. (It's a Pacifica show now, but independent.)
www.pacifica.org and their fabulous radio archives: www.pacificaradioarchives.org
Phyllis Bennis is regularly on WBAI, as is Marjorie Cohn. Both were on "Talk Back" on Jan.5, 2009 on Hugh Hamilton's "Talk Back" show, which is still archived. www.wbai.org And Cohn has her own website, too www.marjoriecohn.com
