An Open Letter to God, From Michael Moore
Sunday, August 31st, 2008
Dear God,
The other night, the Rev. James Dobson's ministry asked all believers to pray for a storm on Thursday night so that the Obama acceptance speech outdoors in Denver would have to be cancelled.
I see that You have answered Rev. Dobson's prayers -- except the storm You have sent to earth is not over Denver, but on its way to New Orleans! In fact, You have scheduled it to hit Louisiana at exactly the moment that George W. Bush is to deliver his speech at the Republican National Convention.
Now, heavenly Father, we all know You have a great sense of humor and impeccable timing. To send a hurricane on the third anniversary of the Katrina disaster AND right at the beginning of the Republican Convention was, at first blush, a stroke of divine irony. I don't blame You, I know You're angry that the Republicans tried to blame YOU for Katrina by calling it an "Act of God" -- when the truth was that the hurricane itself caused few casualties in New Orleans. Over a thousand people died because of the mistakes and neglect caused by humans, not You.
Some of us tried to help after Katrina hit, while Bush ate cake with McCain and twiddled his thumbs. I closed my office in New York and sent my entire staff down to New Orleans to help. I asked people on my website to contribute to the relief effort I organized -- and I ended up sending over two million dollars in donations, food, water, and supplies (collected from thousands of fans) to New Orleans while Bush's FEMA ice trucks were still driving around Maine three weeks later.
But this past Thursday night, the Washington Post reported that the Republicans had begun making plans to possibly postpone the convention. The AP had reported that there were no shelters set up in New Orleans for this storm, and that the levee repairs have not been adequate. In other words, as the great Ronald Reagan would say, "There you go again!"
So the last thing John McCain and the Republicans needed was to have a split-screen on TVs across America: one side with Bush and McCain partying in St. Paul, and on the other side of the screen, live footage of their Republican administration screwing up once again while New Orleans drowns.
So, yes, You have scared the Jesus, Mary and Joseph out of them, and more than a few million of your followers tip their hats to You.
But now it appears that You haven't been having just a little fun with Bush & Co. It appears that Hurricane Gustav is truly heading to New Orleans and the Gulf coast. We hear You, O Lord, loud and clear, just as we did when Rev. Falwell said You made 9/11 happen because of all those gays and abortions. We beseech You, O Merciful One, not to punish us again as Pat Robertson said You did by giving us Katrina because of America's "wholesale slaughter of unborn children." His sentiments were echoed by other Republicans in 2005.
So this is my plea to you: Don't do this to Louisiana again. The Republicans got your message. They are scrambling and doing the best they can to get planes, trains and buses to New Orleans so that everyone can get out. They haven't sent the entire Louisiana National Guard to Iraq this time -- they are already patrolling the city streets. And, in a nod to I don't know what, Bush's head of FEMA has named a man to help manage the federal government's response. His name is W. Michael Moore. I kid you not, heavenly Father. They have sent a man with both my name AND W's to help save the Gulf Coast.
So please God, let the storm die out at sea. It's done enough damage already. If you do this one favor for me, I promise not to invoke your name again. I'll leave that to the followers of Rev. Dobson and to those gathering this week in St. Paul.
Your faithful servant and former seminarian,
Michael Moore

Show Allnice piece michael
although katrina has resonated through the country as an abject failure of government, inhumane and heartless, i have always felt that it was just an out and out act of pure racism
america watched black people stranded on rooftops with no chance of escape and america found the wherewithal to simply turn away
america watched black people die and couldn't find the simple decency to care
in new orleans the republican racists jumped at the chance to de-black the city
racist comments and commentary were so plentiful that i need not litanize them
only kanye west had the courage to speak up on this issue
fema couldn't even get a bottle of water to the disaster zone even as bush told his boy "yur doin' a great job brownie"
the vampire chertoff sent the toxic trailers - apparently the toxicity did not affect the un-dead
and of course, like everything else bushco - no one was responsible
michael lampoons the christian right in this piece but they are beyond humor
they are evil and hateful - their ignorance is beyond redemption
they are going straight to hell for all of this (where they will be able to touch base with their old friend fallwell) but in the meantime they try to create hell on earth, applauding death and murder all over the old world
the one idea that truly gets me though is the hale bop comet like belief that they must protect israel (and support the palestinian genocide) at any and all costs because, they say, we are in the end times, and the only way to get to heaven is to be physically be in israel, the chosen land, when god comes down
how freaky is that?
cheers, b
Try Naomi Klein''s "The Shock Doctrine". If youve read it, you know, that it supports most of your points and explains how it was NOT incompetence nor a lack of caring--it was, by all means, intentional.
KDelhi - i agree with the observations of the shock doctrine
but i am talking about the american public - the citizens who were so accepting of the whole event
cheers, b
I see--but alot of people were not. I was SHATTERED! II point to that as the one day that I decided that my govt would do ANYTHING FOr the pursuit of capitalism and money. It feels horrible. But, freedom tastes of reality! I DO see whqt youre saying--and some peopoel STILL blame the victims--of the mortgage scandal, of being ill, its the American way of life--to assauge their guilt.(if tehy have any) It sure wouldve ben nice to heazr Obama comment more/any? on the horrible poverty we see among all races, in this new gilded age.
This is rather sick. People in New Orleans are going to DIE if this storm hits the city, and here we have Michael Moore thanking god for the political points his side will score if this happens?
It's this little thing called humor, you should check into it. Sometimes it's a choice between laughing and crying. Humans use it as a resource to avoid going insane.
Humor about other peoples' death? Dont get it..Michael Moore is a sell--out. And guess what? There is no God.
What? How is he a sell-out? --------------lizard
See above! Helath care, the war, lobbying money,FISA, right to free speech, Patriot Act, tax cut reform(wil now take 10 yrs!!)--if morre supports Obama without question, and people follow like sheep--its called sellingout!
The Dems need to CHALLENGE Obama to live up to the standarse he put forth in the Primary-=-which STILL did not include alot of things people credit to him. Youare projecting your dreams on him, people--he asked you to do it! I've heard from people of such varying opinion as to be ridiculous--who ALL feel that Obama wil do/VERY disparate things! He cant do them all! He SHOULD do the things he no longer promises.
Without his undying support for the weasels of the democratic party, his films would never be released--at least in the mainstream venues. He helps create the turmoil, then sits back & benefits from the carnage he helps build.
He's a brilliant filmmaker. I own his DVDs & books. He's done some great work.
At the end of the day though, he's simply a player for the dems--and any dem will do. Its all a game.
Its a good living for MM.
I think he's a little more complicated than that. As a green, I too wish he wasn't a stooge for the Dems. I think he made a choice that it was a necessary thing to do after becoming mainstream. I don't think he did it in order to become mainstream, I think he did it to preserve a mainstream status that just happened to fall in his lap.
I remember fondly the "Elect Ficus" campaign from the "Awful Truth" days... awww Mike, what happened?
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"
it is you who are being rather sick. lizard
The abject poverty that exists in NO should not exist at all, OK! In this land of gazillionaires, even "Obama the One" is NOT calling for universal health care, NOT calling for an immediate end to the war. Moore, first had to vote for Obama "because his religion" wouldnt let him bote for anyone who voted for the war--BS! Obama changes--Moore doesnt--He makes alot of$$--Biden steps aboard--Moore is STILL there!Moore makes a movie abou the horrors of the HMO system--and Obama takes $$ from tehm and say as we cant have univ healh care bedause HMO sheeples "need the jobs"!@ I used to love Michale MOore--he sold out. He's rich.We have no health care and Obama dosent mention povdrty or the black ocmmunity in his acceptance speech--my bros and sis--we are screwed
You gotta love it. What do you expect from Michael Moore?
His sick personal PR and shilling for his republican look-a-likes called democrats by even going in this direction is beyond the pale.
Anything for to 'em elected. Doesn't matter who it is, as long as they've got a donkey stamped on their forehead.
-Democrats gave us NAFTA.
-Democrats gave us the WAR.
-Democrats (and now Obama) let ATT& Verizon and the other telcos off the hook for unlawful spying.
-Democrats with the help of republicans have entered us into an eternity of war and violence.
Thanks Mike!
Vote Nader. Vote McKinney.
I don't think he was really thanking God. I think he was using the type of rhetoric the religious right uses during natural disasters (It's Gods way of punishing the gays!) to try and make a darkly satirical point.
We should be able to laugh at tragedy. It makes it easier to manage. From Shakespeare to Vonnegut, the greats of history have tried to point this out.
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"
Michael,
How futile.
You know better!
God only listens to Republicans!!
And of course only Republicans listen to God as he only speaks to and through THEM.
Wherever the storm does it's err I mean HIS damage, we can expect to see McCain and
his running mate rush to the scene to help handout bottled water and ice. Because God told them to do it, not for any political advantage. Come on! Sheesh.
You Decide
I have not seen one example of the Republican party caring about anything besides themselves. Gustav is probably the answer to their prayers to keep Bush away from their convention.
When the people fear their government there is tyranny,
when the government fears the people there is liberty.
~ Thomas Jefferson
Good to see you here, Kathy!
Agreed re the Republican Party, but in reality, the Dems are on the same boat. The difference is that the Dems are reformable - the Reps are merely despicable.
Still, I'm supporting Obama as he will give us room to do some much needed work shoring up our constitution.

i had the same thoughts this morning..
prayers, maybe...
i actually believe the storms are generated by weather modification weapons positioned in space. this storm is perfectly timed to deflect attention away from the rnc - bush/cheney don't have to go and s palin gets a pass from the media as cooper anderson buckles up his waders along the gulf coast. mccain keeps the contest a tie.

The above statement is absolutely correct. Meaning, all combined wealth of Corporations, as a majority. Control the largest quantity, of power. Which ever existed ..

This statement is more factual. Than what is stated on the back of , U.S. Dollar bills.

Ever notice the "C" shape of the setting area at the U.N. Security Counsels chambers ? Just "WHAT !" do you think that "C" stands for ? """"""" "CORPORACRACY""""""""""!!!!!!
further proof there is no god: if there were, it would send the hurricane to the republican convention center, tear the roof off, send a lightening bolt up Cheesedick Cheney's ass, smite Bush, put a mark on McCain, and force thousands of minorities ,forced to flee the storm ,through its doors. Imagine, thousands of republican delegates, hunkering down with the recipients of their inhumane policies. Sharing bunks, overflowing the same toilets, each watching their ederly die from heat stroke and dehydration. We saw Christopher Hithchen's macho-man attitude towards the war on terror change after he underwent waterboarding (in which he lasted 3.5 seconds), so maybe some real life horror handed to conservatives might actually do a little good for our country. Or maybe the Rapture will come right as the storm hits
Could you guys stop shaming the Democratic Party--oh, that right--they did it themselves last wek!
It's a great movie! "No train leaves 'til morning"
I don't know what to say exactly. I assume this was a lame attempt at humor considering the dire possibilities involved. Lets just let it go at poor taste. I'm sure Mr. Moore didn't intend to make light of other peoples danger.
But I do suggest that any that feel the need to express their disbelief in God do it in private or face to face. I really don't see Christians commenting on Atheists and Agnostics all the time. Personally I'd appreciate less explanation of your religeous persausion or the lack thereof. Religion is a personal matter in my opinion.
Thanks for your consideration.
So, I'm sute you feel the same way about the quasi-religious fest that was the DNC Convention--I did not say I was an atheist--but i woudl have a right to--what is WRONG with you sheeples! By that I mean, that I deplore tthese actionary "atheist groups". I dont wan to belong to a group at all. If you wont let me speak--or criticize me when I do--dont claim to know me.
Speak up about anything you like of course, I would never tell anyone not to express an opinion. In fact I wasn't even thinking about you or anyone else in particular. I just notice constant comments about relegion and some derogotory remarks about people that believe in God, I'm just not for it.
Say anything you please, at anytime, not that you need my permission or anyone elses. If I disagree with you I;ll say so as I expect you will disagree with me and say so if you do.
I don't think religion is a personal matter. Spirituality may be. Personal philosophical ideas about the nature of existance may be. The choice whether or not to believe in some type of God/higher power/unifying force may be.
But when you say religion, to me that represents a social institution that, by nature, makes assumptions about the way that ALL people should be living their lives, and therefore is a threat to all those that aren't in agreement with it. Religion is a force for repression and stands in the way of societies becoming more reasonable.
As such, I think it is as far from a personal matter as could be.
So to restate: I don't care if one believes in God, or elves, or anything else for that matter. The world's pretty crazy, think what you want to make sense of it. But when you form a group of people that all think their way is the one right way to live, a group that constantly tries to convert others to their mindset... well be prepared for a fight.
And yes, I suppose such a group could also be atheistic in nature.
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"
Seems fairly reasonable to me, though I'd still say religion is a personal matter. Wouldn't you agree that all groups that think the same way try to convert you to their way of thinking? No matter what it is.
As to the prosletizing by Religious groups, I just don't listen and I don't approve of it myself.
The real split comes when any group trys to impose their religion on me or mine (or my country) by Fiat. If my kid wants to say a prayer at school, better leave him alone. If my kid doesn't believe in prayer and doesn't participate, better leave him alone. If your kid needs to wash his feet to pray 3 times a day, you better bring your own footbath. I'm sure you see what I'm saying.
The example of prayer in school I used just because it is so easy. To me I find removing it just as offensive as the Athiast that insisted on it. Its a question of freedom at that point, not religion. (well, I hope you see what I'm trying to say)
In case someone like Dave Zirin shows up with his idiot commentary about how even the dogs and cats of New Orleans were treated better than the black residents, let us remember many thousands-maybe 100 000 animals died-drowned in their cages in the University of New Orleans labs. The animals were stuck in their cages and sadly-were probably better off than what they were being subjected to in the name of $$ and scientific fraud.
Black residents who refused to abandon their pets witnessed them being shot.
I like Michael Moore's commentaries for gadfly humor.
Dear God,
I too have a prayer for you. Please give the over the top progressive bloggers at CD something constructive to do - they have way to much time on their hands. amen
paleomarc
Do you think you could possibly get past other peoples' religious or not beliefws in this "land of the free"? Talk about iem one your hands--is this really the otpic of the article? What are you so afraid of?
.
http://www.votenader.org/media/2008/08/29/minnealpolisrally/
Fresh from a 4000-person super rally in Denver, the Nader/Gonzalez Campaign team has hit the ground in Minneapolis and will be out in full force over the weekend to focus attention on the need for opening up the Presidential Debates for third party and independent candidates, working towards the crescendo: a star-studded open the debates super-rally on Thursday.
Ralph Nader, Matt Gonzalez, Jesse Ventura, Cindy Sheehan, Justin Jeffre, Nellie McKay, and other surprise guests to be named soon to be announced will all appear at the Nader/Gonzalez "Open the Debates" Super Rally September 4 at 7.30 p.m. at the Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
The Nader/Gonzalez independent presidential candidacy will be on the ballot in 45 states, is polling at 5-6 percent nationally, and a new Time/CNN poll shows Ralph Nader polling 8 percent in New Mexico, 7 percent in Colorado, 7 percent in Pennsylvania, and 6 percent in Nevada -- all key battleground states.
.
Now THAT is some change worth PRAYING for--if you believe in justice, frededom, and equality. If you dont--folow the crowd.
Thank GOD there is Nader and McKinney to vote for in Colorado.
New Orleans is a reminder of how deeply rooted this nation is in racism and classism. The world saw the suffering and the disregard for human life on part of the Bush Administration and the local officials. Makes me proud to be an American!
God is punishing Republicans for their hate of half of Americans, for their genocide of brown people in the Middle East so they can steal their oil and for the torture of prisoners in Guantanamo and other dungeons around the planet.
It's rewarding to see their hate fest in Minneapolis being spoiled like this. At least Bush found the perfect excuse not to attend, he'll be happy to stay behind and drink himself to a state of stupefaction.
PLEASE dont say God is killing people in NO , to help promote your political agenda--it makes you sound like Bush! I hear what you are saying--if we had our civil rights back, the many protestors might have been ablt to disrupt the Convention. That si why FISA, etc. was so important
My goodness how brainwashed can people be. First, you're not very good at understanding sarcasm, second, you're assuming that I think God exists.
Let's get down to your preschool level and assume for a minute that God exists. Isn't He the all mighty deity? If so, why is he allowing yet another tragedy to befall humanity? Isn't He the all powerful? Do you see now the absurdity of your idea of a supreme being?
I understand Moore's words. He's funny AND a great filmmaker. Its his personal PR--getting his press--at the expense of fostering more discourse within the citizenry that bothers me.
However, the fact that such an intelligent man could back such a party of fakes and warmongers only tells me he does it for the money... for we all know there is no difference in his business associate's party and the republicans.
With Mike, its all about the money.
Same/same

SITTING HERE WONDERING WHAT I CAN SAY TO OTHERS AND TO MYSELF ABOUT WHAT "KATRINA"HAS EXPOSED ABOUT US AS A COUNTRY AND A PEOPLE.I'M BEGINNING TO THINK THAT THE NEW DEAL UNDER FDR WAS AN ILLUSION AND THAT DEEDS DO NOT MATTER AS MUCH AS WORDS.HOW,I WONDER,CAN THIS COUNTRY BE A NATION OF ME'S,A COUNTRY THAT THINKS IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO HAVE THAN TO SHARE.
THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE STEPPING UP TO HELP AND HAVE DONE SO IN THE PAST.BUT AS SOON AS THE CRISIS IS OVER EVERYTHING REVERTS BACK TO THE ME.I'LL BET THAT THE REST OF THE WORLD IS HOPING THAT SOMEONE YANKS US OFF THE WORLD STAGE.OTHER PRIMA DONNA'S HAVE COME AND GONE AND I'LL BET MY ASS IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN.
THE WE LASTS AS LONG AS THE CRISIS DOES AND NO LONGER AND NO COUNTRY,NO HOMELAND (I HATE THAT WORD,IT SOUNDS SO NAZI)NO PEOPLE CAN LAST IF IT IS "ME" THE PEOPLE.
IF IT IS NOT WE THE PEOPLE THEN WHAT?
The death culture we live in will not change until the value of LIFE is raised. Wars, degradation of the environment, abortions, poverty, excess commercialism, and greed are all death tokens. Democrats cannot let go of abortion on demand, Republicans cannot let go of war and the war economy, yet each criticizes the other without seeing their own contradictions, so we continue down the road of planetary destabilization and death, each pointing the finger at the other. Each side is blind to the futility of this approach and neither side feels compelled to compromise or change. Both sides seem to be saying I am willing to destroy the Earth if I do not get my way, and they will.
Only a LIFE culture can eliminate the death culture. An organism cannot be partially alive, it is either alive or dead. The same is true for a culture, it is either living or dying. Our culture is clearly dying. Since change does not happen overnight, if we have any chance of survival we must change to a life culture now and that can only be done one person at a time.
There is no more time for political debate about life and death. You must choose now and you will get what you choose.
Hmm. Ok. What about the life being taken away by having children. You do not see the connection between the wars being waged and the lifestyle all the new humans being popped out will live. Or the species going extinct as we plow over their habitat to make way for the space necessary to support all of this wonderful life you speak of.
Abortions have been carried out throughout human history. Not, of course, so people can be irresponsible - abortion should never be used as a form of birth control, we have actual birth control for that - however, tribal peoples recognized when the tribe could not support further life, and would not sacrifice the life of the tribe for the life of one fetus. They knew how to induce abortions. I do not view this as negative, I view this as being realistic.
Today, we need to be realistic. The earth can not support any more human beings. We should practice birth control first and foremost, but we should recognize that bringing children into this fucked world is a torture far worse than any mere abortion.
It's silly to say that "Democrats can not let go of abortion on command"... what they can't let go of is the woman's right to make this choice for herself. There are folks that support a woman's right to choose but may not agree with abortion. They just realize that you can't make something like abortion illegal and expect it to go away... you need to go after the social situations that make people want to have abortions... mainly poverty and lack of community.
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"
I am pleased that someone noted the demographic problem in all this!
And I am one that does not like abortion, but would never, under any circumstances take away a womans or couples right to choose. Its not my right or any others to make this decision for other people.
Very well said Stone. You hit the nail on the head.
Well put, Stone, and I agree.
There are other ways to describe the two cultures: Elder & Younger, Leavers & Takers, etc. And yes, it can only be done one person at a time. However, I think what is necessary is that people start to understand the differences between the two cultures. Not that either culture is perfect or more noble, just that one works and one doesn't. Ours clearly doesn't.
The most difficult part of this for me is knowing that I must change my cultural perspective, yet still live in this culture and do the best I can to help change come in the best way possible. I don't advocate for the "perfect" way, because there is none (a fool's errand if ever there was one), but I vote for what I can get and work for the rest.
