How Many Americans are Targeted for Assassination?
When The Washington Post's Dana Priest first revealed (in passing) back in January that the Obama administration had compiled a hit list of American citizens targeted for assassination, she wrote that "as of several months ago, the CIA list included three U.S. citizens." In April, both the Post and the NYT confirmed that the administration had specifically authorized the assassination of Anwar al-Awlaki. Today, The Washington Times' Eli Lake has an interview with Obama's top Terrorism adviser John Brennan in which Brennan strongly suggests that the number of U.S. citizens targeted for assassination could actually be "dozens":
Dozens of Americans have joined terrorist groups and are posing a threat to the United States and its interests abroad, the president's most senior adviser on counterterrorism and homeland security said Thursday. . . . "There are, in my mind, dozens of U.S. persons who are in different parts of the world, and they are very concerning to us," said John O. Brennan, deputy White House national security adviser for homeland security and counterterrorism. . . .
"If a person is a U.S. citizen, and he is on the battlefield in Afghanistan or Iraq trying to attack our troops, he will face the full brunt of the U.S. military response," Mr. Brennan said. "If an American person or citizen is in a Yemen or in a Pakistan or in Somalia or another place, and they are trying to carry out attacks against U.S. interests, they also will face the full brunt of a U.S. response. And it can take many forms."
Nobody -- or at least not me -- disputes the right of the U.S. or any other country to kill someone on an actual battlefield during war without due process. That's just obvious, but that's not remotely what Brennan is talking about, and it's not remotely what this assassination program is about. Indeed, Brennan explicitly identified two indistinguishable groups of American citizens who "will face the full brunt of a U.S. response": (1) those "on the battlefield in Afghanistan or Iraq"; and (2) those "in a Yemen or in a Pakistan or in Somalia or another place." In other words, the entire world is a "battlefield" -- countries where there is a war and countries where there isn't -- and the President's "battlefield" powers, which are unlimited, extend everywhere. That theory -- the whole world is a battlefield, even the U.S. -- was the core premise that spawned 8 years of Bush/Cheney radicalism, and it has been adopted in full by the Obama administration (indeed, it was that "whole-world-is-a-battlefield" theory which Elena Kagan explicitly endorsed during her confirmation hearing for Solicitor General).
Anyone who doubts that the Obama administration has adopted the core Terrorism policies of Bush/Cheney should listen to the concession -- or boast -- which Brennan himself made in his interview with Lake:
Mr. Brennan toward the end of the interview acknowledged that, despite some differences, there is considerable continuity between the counterterrorism policies of President Bush and President Obama.
"There has been a lot of continuity of effort here from the previous administration to this one," he said. "There are some important distinctions, but sometimes there is too much made of those distinctions. We are building upon some of the good foundational work that has been done."
I would really like never to hear again the complaint that comparing Bush and Obama's Terrorism and civil liberties policies is unfair, invalid or hyperbolic given that Obama's top Terrorism adviser himself touts that comparison. And that's anything but a surprise, given that Brennan was a Bush-era CIA official who defended many of the most controversial Bush/Cheney Terrorism policies.
I've written
at length about the
reasons why targeting American citizens for assassination who are
far away from a "battlefield" is so odious
and tyrannical, and I won't repeat those arguments here. Suffice
to say -- and I'm asking this literally -- if you're someone who
believes, or are at least willing to acquiesce to the claim, that
the U.S. President has the power to target your fellow citizens for
assassination without a whiff of due process, what unchecked
presidential powers wouldn't you support or acquiesce to? I'd really
like to hear an answer to that. That's the question Al Gore asked about
George Bush in a 2006
speech condemning Bush's claimed powers merely to eavesdrop
on and imprison American citizens without charges, let alone
assassinate them: "If the answer is yes, then under the theory by which
these acts are committed, are there any acts that can on their
face be prohibited? . . . If the president has th[is] inherent
authority. . . . then what can't he do?" Can anyone
defending this Obama policy answer that question?

Show All"...he will face the full brunt of the U.S. military response,"
It's official. We've become them. Cool.
It is time to remove all the bastards from power!
Last week there was an article about American citizens serving in the IDF and somebody suggested stripping them of their US citizenship. Here's another case where that can be applied.
The drones are already in place.
How outrageous!
[begin sarcasm mode]
I suggest a letter writing campaign or write your congressman.
Or join the military or politics and change things from the inside.
Or perhaps organise group hopes & prayers.
All of them have been proven to work......right?
[end sarcasm mode]
Don't forget. If that doesn't work, we can mourn!
Old news, i'm afraid. Many have known for decades that a government for, of and by the people was a sham while empowering the corporate citizens of the country like Monsanto, Enron, etc. As hard as we try, capitalism and democracy mix about as well as, well, oil and water.
We knew, yes, but the audacity of hope has just made it official.
How is Mr. Hope doing now?
Government policy like this above gives anyone freedom to target any government official with assassination, too.
Under the theory that the people are the sovereign, anyone can make a list of who ever in government service they want to murder for whatever reason.
In other words, the law as the rule over citizens is over. It is now official policy that men rule over laws.
It should spiral down pretty quickly from here.
The Constitution is finished. Now it is the emperor who will control. In away this is an interesting time. In away, it is frightening.
In support of Glenn's contention both the Bush and Obama administration supporting the theory that the entire planet is claimed by the United States as a battlefield and something we defend because it is ours, I refer you to the 9/11 Commission report saying as much.
" . . . the American homeland is the planet."
That is a pretty blatent statement of extending sovereignty on page 362. I suppose it is old news to the other 95 percent of humanity on the receiving end of this presumption, but it is fascinating that they would actually say it so blatently, although it is entirely consistent with the 2002 NSS, Bush at West Point, Obama today, etc.
Here is the context:
"National security used to be considered by studying foreign frontiers, weighing opposing groups of states, and measuring industrial might. To be dangerous, an enemy had to muster large armies. Threats emerged slowly, often visibly, as weapons were forged, armies conscripted, and units trained and moved into place. Because large states were more powerful, they also had more to lose. They could be deterred.
"Now threats can emerge quickly. An organization like al Qaeda, headquartered in a country on the other side of the earth, in a region so poor that electricity or telephones were scarce, could nonetheless scheme to wield weapons of unprecedented destructive power in the largest cities of the United States.
"In this sense, 9/11 has taught us that terrorism against American interests "over there" should be regarded just as we regard terrorism against America "over here." In this same sense, the American homeland is the planet."
p. 362
The 9/11 Commission Report: Final Report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States. W.W. Norton and Company, Inc. New York. 2004.
I'm sickened by this. We're screwed, really screwed.
"...she wrote that "as of several months ago, the CIA list included three U.S. citizens.""
Hmmm...I dunno why but something tells me that those three names on the hit list ain't Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. Or as some of us lovingly refer to them "Rummy, Dummy and Scummy."
The top is never where change originates.
Real change always comes from the bottom.
A tree grows from its roots, not its top..
But it looks as if this time, globally, the different tops -- and our supposed super top -- are busy destroying the planet we live on.
They think they have until the end of the century.
They're wrong.
And after, the Meek shall inherit the world.
Well, if continue as we are, the cockroaches shall inherit the earth.

Please Mr. Obama,
Put me on your list.
It would be an honor,
To be on your list.
It will not make me cower
And try to run away
I intend to keep my power
I intend to have my say.
We are not afraid!

And Mr. Obama please, me too.!!!!!
A great honor.!!!
And Mr. Obama please, me too.!!!!!
A great honor.!!!
Remember when Bush assassinated a US citizen in Yemen. Condo Rice said it was legal - authorized by an Executive Order. The assassination was carried out by a drone. They think that the entire planet is a "battlefield".
Yep, we are all really screwed.... and to think, you could have voted for Nader and avoided all of this.
Sorry - that is facile thinking. If we had organized sufficiently so that someone like Nader could have won, we would have avoided all of this.
Joe
Wasn't that a whole carful of terrorists (sic) including the standard basic helping of collateral (sic) damage?
And don't forget that as of June 1, drones are now flying over the border and US cities for "law enforcement."
How long did the French underclass go hungry before the 'class war' broke out?
How long did the Russian peasants work themselves into an early grave with a broken back before they had enough?
We were not perfect but we were doing OK until Ronald Reagan the Great showed up. How long will we beg them to please not put all their weight on the heel we are under before we say "ENOUGH"?
"We" don't have to worry. The government will only shoot down ill eagles!
About seventy years ago, it used to be a little Charlie Chaplinesque guy shouting "Deutchland uber alles!" "Ein volk, ein Fuhrer, ein vaterland!" Today Germany, tomorrow the world! We lost an entire generation shutting that guy down.
Now, the only thing to have changed is some of the names, and the language. The Nazi philosophy lives, here in the "United(?)" States of America. Not only that, but it seems to be flourishing.
Now, it is US that are sending our young men (and women) out to destroy and occupy far away lands to rape them of their resources.
Those Americans who disagree with the Corporate Fuhrer are defined as terrorists or enemies of the state. The hit list grows.
See the Hellfire Missile, coming soon from a Drone near you!
I think the only thing that may save the world from US is the volcano in the Gulf and, unfortunately, that may well be the end. As I said in another post, we may have stabbed our Mother Earth too deeply in her vitals and she is bleeding to death.
Fascist amerika rules by fear; thankfully the empire IS collapsing !
Wrong! As Americans watched its soccer team win, its military was moving ten warships, including an aircraft carrier, through the Suez Canal and under the protection of 4,000 Egyptian soldiers...It is time for Iran to be occupied or blown away.....Zbigniew Brzezinski and Henry Kissinger have had their New World Order in place for years.....I can only assume that the assassinations will continue as planned! The Rule of Law is now The Rule of Power and Greed!!!
If you are followed for three years 24/7 , gang stalking torture, I consider that a slow assassination, and I know that our Department of Justice is fully aware of community watch vigilante gang stalking and they do nothing about.
Do you have any idea how many Americans die every year due to gang stalking torture.
Assassinations are the norm , nothing new , welcome to the United Stazi of America.
Yawn, just another day in the European's modern day Roman Babylon. Hail Caesar. Hail the Senate. Hail Rome.
Bill's come in and need to be paid now that the Europeans built their buy it and sell it world where all they ever do is buy it and sell it.
Same commercials and commercialized people over and over again. Their same boring rerun world over and over again. Oh, my who will win the next election in Rome? Who will be the next Caesar? A Republican or Democrat?
And only around 115 years after rounding up the last of the Tribes their world becomes more and more of a festering hell on earth. Who could have ever predicted the modern day Roman Babylon would do nothing but become more and more a festering hell on earth?
Myself, and mine had a wonderful day upon Creator's earth. Thought you might have all the problems of your modern day Roman Babylon solved by now, and the earth saved by now but we wouldn't exactly lay and bets in Vegas on that happening.
So just sit our old bones upon the earth back and enjoy life.
Life is good. What an experience! It's always best to forgive.
"How Many Americans are Targeted for Assassination?"
- "Dozens," said John O. Brennan, deputy White House national security adviser for homeland security and counterterrorism.
Civil war - perhaps globally - is the only measure to stop the ruling fascism now. All the checks have been taken out of the balancing, when the rulers can call anyone "terrorist" at will anywhere and murder them for it - without any chance of "due process", trial or "redress of grievances".
"It is [the] duty [of one People], to throw off such Government, and to Provide new Guards for their future Security." (The Declaration of Independence).
(Btw, this is not an advocacy of civil war, merely a technical observation. Civil war globally can take on ingenious, novel forms to recoup the power of the people over the social systems ruling our lives.)
We are living in a violent world, hang on to your peace.
Peace, or pieces?
That is something for you to decide.

How's this big overbearing Federal Government working out for you?
Sounds like the wheels are coming off most of their lies and they are trying to scare everybody to maintain control. They've been sniffing our emails and phone conversations and are probably of the consensus that this Boogieman Ponzi scheme can't go on much longer. Most people can smell that there is something rotten in Washington.
Sounds suspiciously like forces are massing for a Caspian Sea invasion of Iran. I mean, that's where all the oil is right? Obummer's probably going to declare world war, then kill off the internet and put in martial law.
What's to prevent King Obama from targeting his rival political opponents in the next elections? Do you see out out of control this tyrant already is? He cannot just decree he has the power of a God and life and death over everybody everywhere. No passage in the constitution grants him this Authority.
I just wouldn't feel safe living near the border right now patrolled by military predator drones. It's probably not safe to sit in your back yard there anymore. The only thing worse than being patrolled on by a kid with a machine gun, is being watched by a kid with a flying machine gun.
My advice: Cash out and move to a poor country with few natural resources and a strong local democracy. Make it one in the tropics with poor weather and mountains most of the year. Airborne eyes don't do so hot in low visibility and rain. Police cameras don't last long where the wattage jumps all over the place all day long. I don't have any of those nuisances out here because I just refuse to live under a government that does not trust the people.

"A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defense against foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home. Among the Romans it was a standing maxim to excite a war, whenever a revolt was apprehended.
Throughout all Europe, the armies kept up under the pretense of defending, have enslaved the people." - James Madison, speech at the Constitutional Convention, June 29, 1787
"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people.
The same malignant aspect in republicanism may be traced in the inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and in the degeneracy of manners and of morals, engendered by both. No nation
could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare."

General Reinhard Gehlen head of German military intelligence on the Eastern front and his network of spies and terrorists were brought over to the USA after World War 2 in the now well known Operation Paperclip. From these advisers and functionaries, Allen Dulles, copying many of the methods utilized by the likes of Herr Gehlen, shaped what we now know to be the CIA.

Read it somewhere..just defund the political parties. Stop the donation.. since the parties do not represent the public interest. Don't pay for more war or bad policy. We need policy that returns our money to services for and the interests of our people, desperately in need of help. Enough phoney "deficit" talk too-when its convenient. Just more transgression into the public domain and welfare.
The idea that Obama is weak- most likely- unless he is representing his true constituency. He was certainly weak at allowing a good deal to American citizens with reduced imported drug costs. Strong though at denying a public option and mandating corporate control of health care.
Bring America Back !!!!
**No offense, Michigan woman, but with your Supreme Court allowing corporations to become persons who can make unlimited campaign donations and funding, how do you
imagine to "defund the political parties" as you say ???
Not sure.
It has to begin- we have to stop the flow of money which is what they need and want. The parties, without citizen contribution will look different. They may appear to be just what they are.. corporate skeletons and the leftovers of democracy that we need to re-claim.
The Dem/Repug Parties do get some money from individual plutocrats or "believers" (and dupes). However, to a large extent, those parties are independent of the public. They are corporate-funded parties and reflect corporate interests, not the public interest.
If you cut off individual monetary support to the Dem/Repug Parties, it wouldn't change the behavior of the duopoly. What has to happen is that people just need to stop voting Dem/Repug and vote third party.
If the people who don't vote (about 50 percent of the electorate) were to vote third party, the public could regain political control. The two parties are happy if you don't vote. Unfortunately, those who do vote are inspired to do so by the staged Dem-Repug tension we see each election. That tension is fake. You can see it everyday if you look. Why are Obama's policies the same as Bush's? They have the same corporate agenda of endless wars, privatized healthcare funding and bankster bailouts. But people seem to be easily fooled - every time - by stump speeches laced with emotionally potent keywords.
I've argued this point a lot, but even people responding in these threads just don't seem to get it. Until they do, I'll have zero representation.

Thoughts_Into_Action,
I think you're 100 percent correct. I've copied your post because it's succinct and well written. I encourage others to do the same thing. If you see any post you particularly agree with, or admire it's content, save it as a PDF so you can refer to it later when arguing the case for a third party revolution.
I look at the Bloggasphere like a brain organ. Each of us is just a cell in that brain, which could be assassinated at any time. But the ideas we represent can't be killed off because they are held by others. It is our duty to each carry forward progressive ideas to the next generation.
Copy each others text like you are a scribe trying to preserve Christian gospels from the Early Roman Empire. Don't regard it as plagiarism. I encourage anyone to copy my stuff and use it on the Neocon boards.
We are all in this together, tying to save our little blue marble from tyranny and destruction.

Wake up folks Barakus Obombus has become W. He is a bad dream come true. But in 2012 we can vote for Colin Powell for peace and put an end to this horse hockey. The GOP hierarchy seeing a sure thing is likely to stack the deck in favor of Powell's selection to make sure the Republicans get another Dwight D Eisenhower. A black Ike doens't seem like such a terrible idea right now.
Hit list is the right word to for Obombus gangster crowd. He's the change we can't believe in.

Obama is Bush#3 on steroids. He's even worse than W.
Before Obama most all presidends had their hit list. Prescott Bush was only a senator, but helped form the CIA, and his son George once was head of, as was Robert Gates, the family friend , who was also with George Jr.-and now Obama. Do research and find out how many assassinations that were accomplished by other presidents?
