Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Is a Danger to Muslim Members of Congress, Should Be Expelled

Today, Muslim Advocates called on the House of Representatives to expel Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. This call comes days after a Facebook post from Greene came to light in which she suggested House Speaker Nancy Pelosi receive “a bullet to the head” and said right before the presidential election that freedom is earned “with the price of blood.” She has also suggested that Muslims do not belong in government, tried to force Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib to re-swear their congressional oaths on a Bible and even posted a picture of herself holding a gun next to them. The following is a statement from Muslim Advocates Public Advocacy Director Scott Simpson:

“Marjorie Taylor Greene must be expelled from Congress. Every minute that she remains in office is a minute where André Carson, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, their colleagues and their staff in Congress are in danger. Each day, we learn more about Greene’s recent history of spreading dangerous conspiracy theories, encouraging violence against public officials and making bigoted statements about Muslims, Jews and other marginalized communities. This behavior is an embarrassment to the U.S. Congress and presents a real danger to the people of color who have to walk the same halls with Greene each day.

Just a few weeks ago, the U.S. Capitol was attacked by a violent mob inspired by a reckless conspiracy theory about the election that Greene gleefully encouraged. Greene has also repeatedly targeted Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib—at one point even trying to force them to re-swear their congressional oaths on a Christian Bible. The Muslim members of Congress have all received death threats. One man who came to DC two weeks ago was arrested with explosives, an arsenal of weapons and a handwritten hit list that singled out André Carson as a Muslim. Greene’s consistent anti-Muslim attacks and her embrace of false conspiracy theories will ensure that these threats will continue. For the safety of the Muslim and Jewish members and all people of color working in Congress, Marjorie Taylor Greene must be expelled before she inspires more threats and violence.”

Muslim Advocates is a national civil rights organization working in the courts, in the halls of power and in communities to halt bigotry in its tracks.
