Saul Alinsky, Who?
And now, a word about a good American being demonized, despite being long dead. Saul Alinsky is not around to defend himself, but that hasn’t kept Newt Gingrich from using his name to whip up the froth and frenzy of his followers, whose ignorance of the man is no deterrence to their eagerness, at Gingrich’s behest, to tar and feather him posthumously.
In his speeches, Gingrich pounds away at variations on the theme like the piano player in a cheap Western saloon. He declares, “The centerpiece of this campaign, I believe, is American exceptionalism versus the radicalism of Saul Alinsky,” or, “I believe in the Constitution, I believe in the Federalist Papers. Obama believes in Saul Alinsky and secular European socialist bureaucracy.”
It’s all quite clever and insidious, a classic lesson in how to slander someone who cannot answer from the grave, reminiscent of the tactics Gingrich used in those GOPAC memos back in 1996, when he suggested buzz words and phrases to demonize opponents: corrupt, decay, pathetic, permissive attitude, self-serving, and, of course, radical.
In the case of Saul Alinsky, most of the crowd knows nothing about the target except that they’re supposed to hate him. And why not? There’s the strange foreign name – obviously an alien. One of them. And a socialist at that. What’s a socialist? Don’t know — but Obama’s one, isn’t he? Barack Hussein Obama, Saul Alinsky – bingo! Two peas in a pod, and a sinister, subversive pod at that.
But just who was Alinsky, really? Born in 1909, in the ghetto of Chicago’s South Side, he saw the worst of poverty and felt the ethnic prejudices that fester, then blast into violence when people are crowded into tenements and have too little to eat. He came to believe that working people, poor people, put down and stepped upon, had to organize if they were going to clean up the slums, fight the corruption that exploited them, and get a handhold on the first rung of the ladder up and out.
He became a protégé of labor leader John L. Lewis and took the principles of organizing into the streets, first in his hometown of Chicago, then across the country, showing citizens how to band together and non-violently fight for their rights, then training others to follow in his shoes. Along the way, Alinsky faced down the hatred of establishment politicians, attacks both verbal and physical, and jail time.
He was a gutsy guy. Outspoken, confrontational, profane with a caustic wit, one journalist said he looked like an accountant and talked like a stevedore. He had a flair for the dramatic, once sending a neighborhood to dump its trash on the front step of an alderman who was allowing the garbage to pile up. Or immobilizing city hall, a department store or a stockholders meeting with a flood of demonstrators demanding justice.
One thing Newt has right — Saul Alinsky was a proud, self-professed radical. Just look at the titles of two of his books – Reveille for Radicals and Rules for Radicals. But a communist or socialist he was not. He worked with them on behalf of social justice, just as he worked alongside the Catholic archdiocese in Chicago. When he went to Rochester, NY, to help organize the African American community there after a fatal race riot, he was first invited by the local Council of Churches. It was conscience they all had in common, not ideology.
As far as his connection with Barack Obama, the president was just a kid in Hawaii when Alinsky died, something you would expect a good historian, as Gingrich claims to be, to know. The two men never met, although when Obama arrived on the South Side of Chicago as a community organizer, some of his grass roots work with the poor was with an Alinsky-affiliated organization.
But that’s how it goes in the fight for basic human rights. Alinsky’s influence crops up all across the spectrum, even in the Tea Party. Get this: according to The Wall Street Journal, the conservative holy of holies, the one-time Republican majority leader in the House of Representatives, Dick Armey, whose FreedomWorks organization helps bankroll the Tea Party, gives copies of Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals” to Tea Party leaders.
Watch out Dick – you could be next on Newt’s list, although, curiously, in his fight against the wealthy Mitt Romney, Gingrich himself has stolen a page from Alinsky’s populist playbook. After Romney beat him in the Florida primary, Newt insisted he would continue the fight for the nomination and shouted, “We’re going to have people power defeat money power,” a sentiment that was Saul Alinsky through and through.
Alinsky died, suddenly, in1972. At the time, he was planning to mount a campaign to organize white, middle class Americans into a national movement for progressive change, a movement he vowed to take into the halls of Congress and – his words — “the boardrooms of the mega-corporations.”
Maybe that’s why Newt Gingrich has been slandering Alinsky’s name. Maybe he’s afraid, afraid that the very white folks he’s been rousing to frenzy will discover who Saul Alinsky was – a patriot in a long line of patriots, who scorned the malignant narcissism of duplicitous politicians and taught everyday Americans to think for themselves and fight together for a better life. That’s the American way, and any good historian would know it.

Show AllSomeone should make a movie about this man!
It is really astonishing how viciously ignorant a segment of the population is, and how vigorously they wallow in their prejudices, hatred of progress, the other, Europe, etc., often inspired by their religion and petty bourgeois confinement. No wonder over 90% of Americans do not own a passport!
And I cannot figure out what history Gingrich read! He is the quintessential American anti-intellectual Richard Hofstadter wrote about!
As I have said here before, Newt Gingrich needs to buy good quality knee pads, then crawl to Tulane University in order to return his History PhD. He is an embarrassment to their faculty.

Any person worth his salt with a PhD in history knows that history is all about abuse of power.
The question posed to Willy Horton: Why do you rob banks? Answ: Because thats where the money is.
Though I can understand the deconstructive value of suggesting a film be made about men like Gingrich, I feel that we're 'right on the verge of a new lexicon that inextricably speaks to the danger and opportunity of the moment in which we live. The sheer revulsion of the present perversions calls up everything that life is about - this happens as the mind formulates the words to express the pressurized containment and perversion of life.
Poets and prophets, folks so attuned to the moment of emerging elegance and depth of one's unfolding life are our soul allies in manifesting what seek to live in life.
I would deeply urge folks to listen to an interview with the late Irish poet John O'Donohue:

"The question posed to Willy Horton: Why do you rob banks? Answ: Because thats where the money is."
I suspect that you meant the famous bank robber Willie Sutton instead of Willy Horton.
LOL History meets pop culture.
Saul Alinksy, Live !!

There was a movie made about 10 years ago called "Saul Alinsky"
I'm sure you could google it.
I attended Saul Alinsky Community Organization classes in the early 70's and was not surprised that Gingrich doesn't know what he is talking about, once again! God, I love it, he just keeps proving his inability to ever lead this country! Go Newt!!!!
To people who know nothing about history, Newt Gingrich's self-styled confidence game and the examples it makes use of are considered impressive! Once again, paraphrasing what another poster offered to this forum, "Newt Gingrich is the ignorant person's version of a smart man... and politician."
More evidence that the plan is to unravel what is left of a safety net, all the sacrifices made for the upliftment of this horrible society and steal the language of the radicals to do it: May Day, May 1 be in Chicago.
I think Saul Alinsky has become a "dog whistle" word enshrined by the tea-partiers. I had never heard the man's name until he showed up on a list of (by implication) bad men who influenced Barack Obama written by our local mouthpiece of the tea party in the local paper. The list included his father and KS grown grandparents. But also Mr. Alinsky and a host of others who I had to google and wikipedia to entirely appreciate their "badness".
And of course, how could I out-document Bill Moyers, but I had pretty much the same path of discovery.
And of course I was left thinking, we would WISH this guy had influenced Barack Obama.
"And of course I was left thinking, we would WISH this guy had influenced Barack Obama."
Yes we should. To bad he has demonstrated any of that influence.
Gingrich didn't just invent the idea of using Alinsky as a scare tactic. He's basically just covering Glenn Beck's song here. The reason Gingrich is doing this is because he knows the Beck fans out there will start tapping their feet and singing along with him.
From the article: Barack Hussein Obama, Saul Alinsky – bingo! Two peas in a pod, and a sinister, subversive pod at that.
Huh? A "socialist Kenyan Muslim" and a Jew? That an odd pea-pod...
Gingrich and his VP pick Sarah join the legions who ended up in the ash heap of history and not in the text books. We survived. What's next for Mr. Big Ideas? A book deal that won't sell. I know. A reality show where camera men follow Newt who tells US about his latest greatest big ideas that we mere mortals could never come up with on our own. Newt must have big ideas that even he would be afraid to express publicly for fear of being misunderstood. A reality show titled Newt Knows Best. Better yet, Newt Knows All.
Newt already has his reality show. It is called the primary campaign.
And like most reality shows, it's unreal.
---"Saul Alinsky was a proud, self-professed radical. Just look at the titles of two of his books – Reveille for Radicals and Rules for Radicals. But a communist or socialist he was not. He worked with them on behalf of social justice"---
Heveans forbid no, Mr. Moyers and Mr. Winslip, that Alinsky was one of those socialists!. You would never defend an evil socialist!
I guess we will never hear Moyers say anything favorable about Eugene Debs then, or maybe he will suggest that Debs was not really a socialist, just a "worker for justice".
Will you two old washed-up PBS liberals please go away?
pjd412
Well said. Unfortunately instead of the Republicans we now have have liberals like these two inferring that there is something wrong with being a socialist.
I didn't get that from this article at all.
They wrote: "But a communist or socialist he was not."
Note the practice of putting the verb at the end to make the point more strongly.
I have read before that he wasn't so much inspired by anything Marx wrote. He found it too "abstract", I believe. I don't think these two are bad-mouthing socialism either. They tend to associate with Chomsky often.
Debs is a personal hero of mine - it is interesting to read how he went from just making an insurance brotherhood for workers to a full fledged socialist!
"secular European socialist bureaucracy"
Wow, could they come up with a more loaded focus-group despised phrase? Too funny.
To Mr. Moyers & Mr. Winslip, Thanks guys, it's nice to see that occasionally, someone gets it right.
Dave Alinsky
I discovered Saul Alinsky in a Playboy Interview back in 1974 while I was serving in the Peace Corps on a remote and very tiny island, populated by only 24 people, in the Pacific. I was the first Peace Corps volunteer there (and certainly the last) when discovered an old Playboy magazine someone had left there (from time to time, some Americans had ventured there, mostly civilians or in the Navy). The interview introduced me to a man I found absolutely fascinating. I don't know what year he gave the interview but I was impressed, being a political radical in the 1970s as a protestor at the 1972 Republican Convention and a Zippee (having been an anti-war protestor since 1969). I returned to the U.S., read Rules for Radicals and became an activist during the 1980s while serving as a ghetto teacher in L.A. I organized many events during a twelve year period and Saul was always on the back of my mined. Great human being. I remember one of his stories during the Depression where he said something like the following: My right to eat takes precedence over the rights of others to make money. Something like that. It's called Justice, something VERY foreign to most Americans in this day and age.
Why does the ghost of Alinsky,a dead man, scare the hell out of the powerbrokers?
"Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition." -- From the publisher's comments on Saul Alinksy's "Rules for Radicals:"
Saul Alinsky was an advocate of community organizing, from a middle-class radical and anti-socialist perspective, who died in 1972, when Obama was ten years old. The only connection, if it can be called that, is that both worked in the city of Chicago as community organizers, although separated by a quarter century. Gingrich is recycling an old McCarthy-style smear from the 1990s, when he and other Republicans vilified Hillary Clinton for writing her college undergraduate thesis on Alinsky.
The repeated references to a man who died 40 years ago might appear bizarre. However, invoking the name of a Jew whose father fled Tsarist Russia gives Gingrich the opportunity to appeal to anti-Semitism, anti-communism and anti-immigrant prejudice, as well as to revive the traditional Southern bogeyman of the “outside agitator.” (Alinsky was a prominent supporter of the civil rights movement).

__________________________________________________________________
To me it is amazing how much they enjoy being viciously ignorant as you so correctly put it.
How they seem to enjoy trashing things they know nothing about and will not spend a single minute trying to learn. They are the result of a society based on mindless consumerism, and debt accumulation.

Saul Alinsky "terrible!" Probably just another "Communist" like that Thomas Jefferson. Yeah, that's it. The John Birch Society says so.
Mr. Gingrich is a killer clown
[another fog machine on a busy interstate]
ISMS of all kinds (communism, socialism, fashism, nazism, islamism, capitalism) when they start claiming the monopoly on truth became dangerous to an open society where ideas are discussed for their values.
Marx was wrong when claiming the inane idea that "dictatorship of proletariat" will somehow bring justice and prosperity to human beings and that march of socialism is "inevitable". His Marxism that looked upon the history as if it were exact science and can be tested, was based on equally absurd Hegelianism that individual can be sacrificed in the name of the greater good for many..
Stalinism was a disaster as was Chinese communism, until it modified into capitalism to be able to feed its people and make their lives better. Nazism and fascism led to Holocaust, just as Islamism would since they are based on supremacist Jew-hating ideology that promotes murder in the name of an ideas or Allahu Akbar.
European type socialism in some ways for health care and education but capitalism and FREE markets for ideas and projects works for Europe although their liberal immigration policies had brought them 44 millions of Muslims who want to bring in sharia, which is incompatible with their constitution or the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Obama is right to bring back truly FREE markets where ALL can compete, but he is terribly wrong in negotiating with islamists of ANY kind, since Islamism is WORSE than any other ISM so far tried. The claim of Islam to be the most perfect religion of peace, as CAIR and OIC want us to believe, is absurd if one reads Koran and Hadith and the history and current behaviors of Islamists around the world.

umm...do you realize your comment has essentially NOTHING whatever to do with the article, with Saul Alinsky or with Newt Gingrich? What are you going on about? Obama brought back "truly free markets" Huh? How? By means of a $780 bil bailout or the 3 tril in Fed loan guarantees that came after? The GM bailout that put 1000s of employees on the street and but didn't require GM to do anything to change its idiot structure or its crappy cars?
And negotiating with Islamists? When did that happen and how, if it happened does it relate to the subject at hand? Could you at least pretend to pay attention?
Obama and Hillary Clinton are ready to negotiate with Islamists of Muslim Brothrehood and Taliban, who are adherents to Nazi like Jew hating supremacist ideology of hate, which led to 9/11. They are also yielding to CAIR whitewashing of Islam as a "peceful" religion, as demonstrated during memorial service for 9/11 victims all over US, where 9/11 was treated as "tragedy" caused by a natural disaster rather then by Islamists.
Saul Alynsky promoted egalitarianism and community action, just as Obama did when he was a community organizer, but he baught the Harvard's and Wallstreet "to big to fail" ideas and let socialism for suprer rich take hold. He is trying to correct it by giving speaches about not allowing "you are on your own" for middle class and poor to take hold, as promted by the proponents of catch as catch catch capitalism gurus, such as Romney (vulture capitalist) and Newt (higly paid consultant for subprime mortgage boondoggle of Fanie and Freddy ;-)!).
Thus Obama should listen to Geroge Soros who understand markets and who could help fix what is broken and bring reasonable regualtions that will disolve companies that are too big to fail and have TRUE FREE MARKET in which the playing field is leveled rather then rigged for the big guys.
Nice of Moyers and Winship to unpack this but they are working too hard. This is just plain old Georgia cracker racism; anti-Semitism with barely a nod to political correctness. Saul, like Saul of Tarsus = the greedy Jewish business man, who converted to Paul the apostle after an epiphany on the road to Damascus. And Alinsky - sounds Russiand suspicious. Both names loaded with race codes.
Superficially odd for a militant pro-Likudnik like Gingrich but ultimately congruent. Most rightwing crackers who claim to support Israel want 2 things - money from rich reactionary Jewish people like Gingrich bankroller Sheldon Adelson and support from crazed medieval absolutists who think that the return of the Jews to Israel signals the "end times" (and the ultimate destruction of the Jews). Basically, they're still anti-Semites and still perfectly happy to use anti-Semitism to stir things up. You want to get crackers out to vote, anti-Semitism is a good hole card.
Moyers and Winship rightly reveal the multiple ironies in all this, but, hey, America is an irony-free zone.
Saul Alinsky a great man in there with Thomas Jefferson, another agitator! But today in the Stir Tribune, the neo cons' newspaper of greater Minneapolis and St Paul came this 'really scary" story in an op ed about Alinsky being "dangerous," because he "wanted individuals" to "serve" others just what Jefferson said he dedicated himself to and encouraged others to do same. But with our right wing, echo chamber for insantiy media, it's hard to get at the facts with all the silly propaganda and fiction which these types pass off for facts. The better to "manufacture consent" as Edward S Herman and Noam Chomsky might put it! Oh, manufacture it they do. But as Paul Lazarsfield and Elihu Katz would say going through a "two step flow process" where opinions get filtered through those people defer to in forming opinions, with this varying from one person to another and even with the same individual deferriing to different people on different matters. This going on a bit. Sorry about that! Ecoomy of e xplanation and all that! Sometimes it's best to be a tenured professor in evolutionary psychology at the University of St Andrews or live on a Pacific Island untouched and uncolonized by Europeans.
The attack on Alinsky though wouldn't have really been complete without its attack on Alinsky's belief in egalitarianism as David Erdal and Andrew Whiten put it as a Machiavellian status escalator for people in going about "vigilant sharing" as both Erdal and Whiten refer to it in their evolutionary reference to it in human behavior. This Alinsky before Whiten and Erdal ever published this fine treatise in evolutionary psychology at the University of St Andrews.
Cracker has nothing to do with anything except some white people being from the US Southeast. Stop looking for something important in nothing. Jimmy Carter was a cracker. Big deal! He wasn't my absotue favorite, but he did a good job and should have got reelected over the Gipper. We got a non cracker. How'd that work out for the 99%?
Amazing how peole wouldn't think of saying such silly things about people regarding almost any other category except maybe Arabs! Norman Solomon documentary, "
War Made Easy" points this one out on in one segment with Hollywood bashing the Arabs big time. We could use some real progressive analysis free such hot air.
What it all boils down to is we all came originally from sub Saharan Africa.
Alinsky great man that he was a someone who illustrated what those two British evolutionary psychologists were writing about in that treatise before they wrote about it!
Of course, black people in sub Saharan Africa illustrated it from the start of their time on this planet as some there being studied by these two British academics still do or did last I checked. "Vigilant sharing" is about having a better way of life for all.
We are seeing along with Right-Wing Conservatives, the narrow and avaricious focus of Gingrich’s fight against basic human rights. Alinsky’s entire objective was to counteract the anti-democratic and exploitation of the American workers. Actually it is, ironically, a good thing that Alinsky’s name has come up. This generation will now get to know who he was and what he stood for and what he almost single-handedly did to shape a better life for working Americans. If only there were such a man in our society today.
I'm old enough to have been around when Saul Alinsy was doing his "thing". His sage advice was to fight your battles to win and if you cannot win them, don't fight them unless you win something in losing.
Thank you Bill and Michael. I only wish this kind of insight and information was promoted by the mainstream media - you know - those socialist, left-leaning scions of truth justice and... oh they aren't, are they.
Over the past centuries, there have been 'leaders and organizers' to take many of us to great places by leaps and bounds, but thru this same time , a few have stood over that top shelf and showed us some perspective from over the horror And hate that falls away from lack of oxygen at those altitudes.. Mr. Moyers I have read your work on 4 or 5 continents over the last few decades and salute you sir for your continued sharp edge. Mr. Wind and Mr. East I do not know as well but seem they are keeping reasonable company if rummaging with you.
Good snippet here, it's concealed as a calculus crash course who's content should be studied in intimate detail when your personal brain power will cherish a boost to most... Thank you the great trinkets of food and wine you placed in my path, but more from the extra pece of wisdom emparted that allows my perspective to keep growing... Thank you..
I think it is significant that both Barack Obama and Hilliary Clinton both wrote papers in college on Saul Alinsky. Hilliary actually interviewed him. But they came to opposite conclusions as to Alinsky's tactics. Barack liked them and worked as a community organizer for awhile before going off to law school. Hilliary didn't think his ideas had much efficacy, but the Industrial Areas Foundation that Alinsky started tried to recruit her as an organizer. It can be argued that Barack Obama's first campaign for President was a combination of Alinsky tactics and the Web. I am also a fan of Alinsky. I wrote a paper on him also while an undergraduate and have all of his books on my bookshelf to this day. Alinsky has much to teach us and to learn from. Alinsky didn't think much of the New Left. He said the only movement that they could organize was a bowel movement. He didn't suffer fools lightly.
