Classified McChrystal Report: 500,000 Troops Will Be Required Over Five Years in Afghanistan
Congress Should Hold Hearings on Alternatives to Major Escalation
Embedded in General Stanley McChrystal's classified assessment of the war in Afghanistan is his conclusion that a successful counterinsurgency strategy will require 500,000 troops over five years.
This bombshell was dropped by NBC reporter Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC's Morning Joe on Wednesday:
"The numbers are really pretty horrifying. What they say, embedded in this report by McChrystal, is they would need 500,000 troops - boots on the ground - and five years to do the job. No one expects that the Afghan Army could step up to that. Are we gonna put even half that of U.S. troops there, and NATO forces? No way." [Morning Joe, September 23, 2000]
Mitchell got the figure from an independent source. It was not revealed in the redacted version of the once classified report released by the Pentagon earlier this week. McChrystal has warned the administration that without an infusion of more troops the eight-year war in Afghanistan "will likely result in failure".
There are perhaps only two people in America who think that this level of commitment is sustainable by the United States and its allies and they left office last January.
Thankfully, President Obama is re-thinking his Afghanistan strategy from top to bottom in light of McChrystal's report. In addition to the impossibility of sustaining the level of commitment this doomed-to-fail strategy would require are these stubborn facts:
- 2009 is already the deadliest year for U.S. forces since the war began eight years ago. Fifty-one of the seven hundred and thirty eight U.S. soldiers who have lost their lives in Afghanistan were killed last month alone.
• The national Afghanistan election that Ambassador Karl Eikenberry hoped would lead to a "renewal of trust of the Afghan people for their government" was a disaster and has had the opposite effect. The European Union election monitor has found that over 1 million votes for President Karzai, one third of his total, may be fraudulent. General McChrystal himself describes the Afghanistan government as "riddled with corruption". A government already mired in allegations of widespread fraud and corruption, now facing serious charges and compelling evidence that it has attempted to steal the national election, has no hope of regaining the support of the people of Afghanistan.
- A February 2009 ABC/BBC/ARD poll found that only 18 percent of Afghans support increasing the number of U.S. troops in their country. This should come as no surprise. Historically, Afghans have always forcefully resisted the presence of foreign military forces, be they British, Soviet or American.
- The presence of foreign forces strengthens the hand of Taliban recruiters. An independent analysis early this year by the Carnegie Institute concluded that the presence of foreign troops is probably the single most important factor in the resurgence of the Taliban.
Andrea Mitchell hit the nail on the head after revealing that 500,000 troops would be required over five years on MSNBC: "Would YOU like a president who doesn't shift strategy when you get that kind of report?"
Right question. And the answer is: NO!
Congress should immediately convene hearings to discuss alternatives to General McChrystal's proposal for such a massive escalation of the war in Afghanistan. It is time for the administration and Congress to demilitarize U.S. policy in Afghanistan and strike out in a new, sustainable, direction.

Show AllThere were 500,000 troops in Vietnam at the height of our criminal activities there and, as everyone knows, we were "victorious".
Blast! You stole my thunder! Wait, hold on! This one isn't your usual style? You usually put in more "inventive", can I say, language.
well, at least you wont be dumping helicopters off of aircraft carriers this time...Afganistan is landlocked.
Might be a looong walk back to Tajikistan though

even if they sent a million soldiers, even five million...
in the end -- the USA WILL be kicked out in ignominuous defeat.
period.
that is of course - IF the USA can sustain even one million MORE as A BANKRUPT NATION going abroad asking for LOANS ....
why should foreign countries FEED it when it will only become clearer that as soon as the USA decides it has "established" "stability" somewhere -- it moves ON , like a PARASITE
to the NEXT victim nation to invade and occupy. and MAYBE next time - the nations that LEND to the USA?.
it's imperial game is Sooooooooo transparent. good grief!
General McChrystal accused Pakistan's government, the ISI, of supporting directly the Taliban in Afghanistan. The Taliban are winning, so McChrystal will have to go after the ISI. Period. Or be defeated as he is being. Pakistan has 200 nuclear weapons, they support the Taliban according to the General, he wants more troops.
Target Pakistan. Occupiable? No. Could it be fractured along tribal lines? Maybe. An attempt to grab the nuclear weapons go down? Hell yes, that is the goal with the fractures made permanent.
He has also accused Iran of supporting the Taliban.
Cheneys 50 years of wars are coming to fruition.
That's such a joke. The Iranian government and the Taliban are theological enemies. Iran actually helped us in Afghanistan in 2001 and 2002 at least.
Plus...If the "government" forces of Pakistan weaken further, the local fighters along the Pakistan/India border may goad India into moving forward into Pakistan to try and prevent further terrorist attacks eminating from the unsupervised kashmir area.

Lets get out of Iraq and Af/Pak, bring our military home, and if they can't deal with not being at war somewhere, we can let them invade Canada. (accuse them of harboring terrorists or secretly planning to bomb Israel)
It doesn't matter if the reasons are true or not, We already know that we can lie and get away with it.
A war with Canada will be a lot cheaper and we both speak the same language, except for Quebec, but they will probably be on our side anyway.
Sure..Send your troops to Canada..we will have them smoking pot and playing peace songs in a drum circle in no time

Hey, no cutting in line, Canada. Venezuela's next.
Like the analogy I have posted before: The MIC is like Dracula, it needs blood to survive. Well, what the hell, we can start another wall to pacify the sheeple!
Dracula is right; for that matter our entire social, economic and politcal system is a Vampire, and of course the MIC is an integral part of the whole. One day the Parasite will kill the host it feeds on, or the host will rebel and expel the parasite
Ron Jacob's reading of this classified report reveals McChrystal's view that we can only turn around the failing Afghan effort when the Afghans change their "perception" of the NATO mission as one of "guests," not "occupiers." No matter the number of cups of tea drunk, this is not going to happen, especially if the number of those guests increases to a half million and soldiers continue to act like soldiers not guests when they bomb or break into your house.

What else is new? No worries, the Empire does not have enough troops to send anyway. Unless the draft is brought back.
Why is it always a small group of mostly old rich men decide to sacrifice the blood of young men and innocent civilians while they sit in luxury far away. And the corporate profiteers laugh all the way to the bank.
Same old BS, different decade, different century. This sort of thing has been happening for thousands of years and aint nothing changed except for the scale of destruction and death.
The USA is a death cult: we love to sacrifice our young, kill poverty stricken brown-skinned folks overseas, watch our own people die early and go bankrupt due ot lack of quality health care and insurance, and watch our own citizens drown in hurricanes and floods. We glorify war, death, weapons, violence... as long as we can watch as spectators and someone else does the dying. Kind of like ancient Romans at the Coloseum
Well they are Militarizing the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides as quickly as they can. What they need do now is sign a Contract with Blackwater to "Militarize" all the Elementary schools so as to get a good head start.
Teach them the benefits of "Service To The State" as soon as they pop from the womb and you wont have all this complaining.
Andrews sez: "General McChrystal himself describes the Afghanistan government as 'riddled with corruption'. "

What a surprise. Seeing as how it was put in place by the Cheneybush regime.
Thank goodness the U.S. Government isn't riddled with corruption!!
Thanks...you have put my mind at rest.
Courage to Resist - supporting those men and women in the military who have a change of heart and realize that they cannot support the military machine, are breaking with a most powerful brain washing mechanism.
If you are able to support - they are in need of $10,000 to keep legal battle going -

"Classified McChrystal Report: 500,000 Troops Will Be Required Over Five Years in Afghanistan"
Great report. Since it requires the impossible, that leaves one alternative: to leave.
My only comment is BULLSHIT! But please can anyone tell me where I can view the President of Iran's speech at the UN--I even tried to view it at ALjazera and they start with a brief summary then they lead you to O'bomber with his hypocrital BULLSHIT.WTF!
http://politicaltheatrics.org/2009/09/24/full-text-of-ahmadinejads-speech-to-the-un-general-assembly/
Thanks sneaker--it was a real and more honest speech than O'bomber's--he is consistently wise.
It's called censorship and it's alive and well in the good ole USA. I have been censored out of a number of posts because I dared comment about the important political significance of two stories from Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper. June 17
"Mossad:Iran Will Have Nuclear Bomb by 2014" and "Israel Can't Make up it's Mind about Iranian Nuclear Timetable". Those articles were censored from all news sources in Europe and the US.
I havn't seen it yet in the posts, but when General Westmoreland asked for less troops than that in Viet Nam, he was given a quick boot back to the US.
"What they say, embedded in this report by McChrystal, is they would need 500,000 troops - boots on the ground - and five years to do the job."
Well, that should be fairly simple; let's call the U.S. military "boot" manufacturers (wherever they happen to be located) and tell them we want 500,000 of them sent to Afghanistan.
Even the British and Russians, at the height of colonialism knew enough to keep out. Both were satisfied to have Afghanistan as a buffer between Russia and British India.
Interesting leak, eh?
They need 500,000 so 100,000 will look moderate.
For anyone who has bought a used car, this is the fail-proof technique.
Progressives refuse to incorporate this strategy in their own dealings with politicians.

I think they are McSnorting too much McCrystal McMeth over there at the McPentagon.
500,000 troops for a "sucessful counter-insurgency" ...
Is this REALLY an "insurgency"? I thought the Afganis were just trying to fight off another colonial invader...as they sucessfully did with Ghenghis Khan, Alexander the Great, the British Empire, The USSR etc, etc.
In order for it to be an "insurgency" the Karzi government would first have to be legitimate..and it has NEVER been that.
"The only means of strengthening one's intellect is to make up one's mind about nothing, to let the mind be a thoroughfare for all thoughts." - John Keats
sure....The Afganis will accept the US presence in no time, just like the Palistinians have embraced the Jewish occupation of THEIR country.

Obama knows if he puts in 500,000 troops over five years he will be a one-term president. That's going to be his main reason for opposing McCrystal's recommendations.
They fired Kiernan for not carrying the water and it looks like McCrystal will be next.
Out of Iraq and out of Afghanistan NOW!!!!!
Gail---
Good idea, but I'd hire the Afghans to manufacture the 500,000 boots in the sand. Have them stack them in one big pile to demonstrate the idiocy of the whole thing.
Oh, and I always wonder if a "leak" coming from NBC's Andrea Mitchell is truly a "leak," rather than part of a larger strategy; that's not her married name and she works for GE...

The general has a good idea, but it's clearly not enough. We should double his puny suggestion and send a million U.S. young men and women there to overwhelm the Taliban. That way we can be sure that the Afghan people will enjoy the freedoms we have here.
However, that may not be enough since the Taliban may get outside support. Based on this danger, it makes sense that we also simultaneously attack any evil foreign countries that may someday decide to help them. Places like Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, and Alaska. And what about the Vatican? The Holy See is constantly running off at the mouth about peace, so let's get them too! I hear Rome is nice this time of year. It would only be prudent to put a million men and women in each of these countries.
Any patriotic Americans who love their country should be proud to send all of their children to fight in these noble crusades.
how about that, eh ?
how about spread them nicely :
50 million americans to lord it over a billion africans
50 million americans to lord it over a billionsouth americans
50 million americans to lord it overa billionmiddleeasterners
50 million americans to lord it over a billion europeans
50 million americans to lord it over a billion southeastasian
50 million americans to lord it over 2 billion russians/chinese
that;'s about 300 million americans.....
then maybe the Native indians can FINALLY have their land BACK!!
as for what will HAPPEN to the 300 million americans spread OUT all over the globe trying to lord it over the globe -- well -- that's UP TO THE NATIVES in those regions....but it is likely that those 300 million americans trying to lord it over the natives elsewhere ....
will have either of TWO fates:
they will NEVER get out ALIVE
or they will find themselves shipped out for being Illegal Aliens on the oceans trying to "discover america"....
I have no sympathy for Native Americans. They have an excessive mount of good manners and an unwarranted expectation of reciprocity. Instead of showing hospitality when Columbus showed up the Arawak people should have had him for dinner. If they did, they wouldn't be extinct, and the entire hemisphere would still belong to the original occupants instead of a few crappy casinos. They didn't, they are extinct, and the handful of survivors spend their time oiling their slot machines. When invaded by Europeans and/or the criminals and/or religious nuts they exiled to the new world, the smart move for the natives is to do what the natives of the new world failed to do: kill them and eat them. Oh wait, I think that's what the Afghans are doing now.
We will need five hundred thousand men just to protect the Pipe-Line. Is Andrews in the dark about this project?
The Bush Iraq Project was for the largest oil find in the world, and we let the Chinese in on the deal. Was that to protect the American Corporations with investments in China?

Congress should immediately convene, and fire both General McChrystal and Adm. Mullen. The President needs a new Command Team, a radically new Plan "B", and a new military planning team (that understands the military HISTORY of this region}.
The President and the U.S. Military work for the U.S. Taxpayers; not the Major Global Oil Companies.

NO "HEARINGS"! Rather, Obama: unlipstick and order US forces' retreat from the Bush-hog sty of southcentral Asia's 'Nam! BE the change ... a true commander-in-chief.
Suppose General McChrystal and the rest of the 'volunteers' were required to remain within Afghanistan until 'victory' wes declared? I'll bet it won't take long then.
Why do insane people get to run things?
Individuals of Power like Sioux Rose, Golden Mean, all spiritual intellectuals, gravitate to the Arts, the Earth, to Love. Wherein lies power thus?
But the ilk of Hitler, Cheney, McChrystal, Exxon's CEO, Erik Prince; a tiny minority, they are Sociopaths that understand image projected vs, trueself, treachery, genocide, torture and subversion of freedom as their Manifest Moral Destiny.
Ergo the answer to your exlnt question is that they strive and work from a young age to reach positions of Power. Places real souls scoff to be but now we are, I fear, mortally disempowered.

We could put 5 million troops in Afghanistan (if we had them) and never achieve whatever the f--- it is were are supposed to achieve!
McChrystal is just doing what soldiers do. Giving a military perspective on his "mission" and what it will take to accomplish it. It's up to civilians to decide whether the mission makes sense, is on balance good for the country, serves any worthwhile goal, bankrupts the country, makes more enemies, etc. The answer to these are: No, no, no, yes, yes. Get to work.
great idea gail. and since those boots will all be made
in china the shipping charges will only be a quarter
of what it usually costs. if five hundred it is lets
start be sending everyone in dc's family first. obama's
kid too you young to carry a weapon? then bring them over
to the mess tent and teach them how to cook that will
take up some slack. any sen. rep or gen.s kid give them
a weapon and ship their asses over there. that would
stop that quick enough!sorry jr. no yale for you its
