WASHINGTON

Today, following the release of the latest IPCC report, which details ways to mitigate the climate crisis, Varshini Prakash, Executive Director of Sunrise Movement, released the following statement:

"We are at a crossroads right now. Do we continue to rely on fossil fuel corporations and petrostates who are fueling war and making record profits at the expense of working families, or do we begin a mass mobilization of our government and society to transition to a renewable energy future? The science of the IPCC report is clear: fossil fuels are to blame for the climate crisis, and our government's continued support for fossil fuels at home and abroad is killing us.

"This report, and the lobbying by fossil fuels and petrostates to weaken its findings, are a stark reminder of why we must end our dependence on fossil fuels and begin a just transition to a renewable energy economy -- one that supports workers over corporations, democracy and the futures of our communities. We need a Green New Deal now."

The third installment of the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report comes as working families face fossil fuel price gouging at the gas pump and sky high inflation. Sunrise is calling on President Biden to immediately pass a suite of climate executive actions and use the Defense Production Act to expedite our transition to renewable energy, and for Congress to follow through with bold investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, public transit and to put us on a path toward an energy-secure future.

Sunrise Movement is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
