We Arm the World
The United States once again leads the world in exporting weapons
A $7 billion missile-defense system for the United Arab Emirates. An estimated $15 billion potential sale of Lockheed Martin’s brand-new fighter plane to Israel. Billions of dollars in weaponry for Taiwan and Turkey. These and other recent deals helped make the United States the world’s leading arms-exporting nation.
In 2007, U.S. foreign military sales agreements totaled more than $32 billion — nearly triple the amount during President Bush’s first full year in office.
The Pentagon routinely justifies weapons sales as “promoting regional stability,” but many of these arms end up in the world’s war zones. In 2006 and 2007, the five biggest recipients of U.S. weapons were Pakistan ($3.5 billion), Iraq ($2.2 billion), Israel ($2.2 billion), Afghanistan ($1.9 billion) and Colombia ($580 million) — all countries where conflict rages.
In Pakistan, the fighting ranges from communal violence and state repression, to attacks against India, to deadly battles between Pakistani military and al Qaeda forces in the northwest provinces. Israel has used U.S.-supplied weapons in the West Bank and Gaza, as well as in the 2006 invasion of Lebanon. Colombia uses U.S. weaponry to fight the drug war. Of the 27 major conflicts during 2006 and 2007, 19 of them involved U.S-supplied weapons.
While full data is not yet available for 2008, the United States continues to flood warzones with more destabilizing weapons. In 2008, the Pentagon brokered more than $12.5 billion in possible foreign military sales to Iraq, including guns, ammunition, tanks and attack helicopters.
Raed Jarrar, an Iraqi analyst with American Friends Service Committee, notes the chance that this weaponry will promote peace and democracy in Iraq is slim.
“The current Iraqi armed forces are the same forces and militias that have been committing ethnic and sectarian cleansing during the last years and they have a violent record full of human rights violations, torture and assassinations,” says Jarrar.
What’s more, the United States cannot successfully track its weapons. Hundreds of thousands of U.S.-supplied pistols and automatic weapons destined for Iraqi security forces between 2004 and 2005 remain lost, according to the Government Accountability Office.
The Pentagon has “no idea where they are,” Rachel Stohl, a senior analyst at the Center for Defense Information, a national-security think tank, told the Washington Post in 2007. “It likely means that the United States is unintentionally providing weapons to bad actors.”
U.S. law curbs weapons sales to countries engaged in a “gross and consistent” pattern of human rights abuses or to countries using U.S. weapons for aggressive purposes. But these requirements are often set aside in favor of short-term objectives.
Michael Klare, director of the Amherst, Mass.-based Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies, has followed the arms trade for decades. He discounts official claims that the delivery of arms can help promote stability.
“The more we help one side, the more that regime’s opponents are driven to seek arms from another supplier, leading to an inevitable spiral of arms buying, provocation and conflict,” Klare says.
According to Stohl, “The Bush administration has demonstrated a willingness to provide weapons and military training to weak and failing states and countries that have been repeatedly criticized by the U.S. State Department for human rights violations, lack of democracy and even support of terrorism.”
The Obama administration could mark a new era in arms trade. On the campaign trail, Obama expressed openness to signing the global cluster munitions ban, but he has yet to speak about a global Arms Trade Treaty — which would establish more rigorous conditions for weapons exports — or about curbing weapons sales, in general.
“The arms trade is never a panacea for instability,” Klare says. “It can only enflame regional tensions and heighten the risk of war.”

Show AllThis is why I get so angry when people vote within the two-party system! Do you honestly think had you voted for Nader or McKinney we would be spending this kind of money? You say: go slow, you just can't win. But look what you have won with your support: complicity in the deaths of others all over the world.
I still recall the day the United States intercepted a North Korean Vessel, boarded it and seized its cargo.
It had missiles aboard. The hypocrisy of the United States Government was mind boggling.
They stated that North Korea was irresponsible and one of the largest weapons proliferators in the world.
The spokesman , the media , were absolutely clueless as to how idiotic the United States of America appeared.
While we agree that the US should not be exporting these arms, lets not forget all the other arms dealer countries. The aggregate total is mind boggling.
One country arms one side, another country arms the other side....how do we stop that?
The Chinese are furnishing the arms for the genocide in Darfur, how do we stop them?
We arm South Korea against North Korea, Israel against the Arab and Muslim nations Russia, China, North Korea arm them. It makes your head spin.
The real question is, can we stop us?
"The Chinese are furnishing the arms for the genocide in Darfur, how do we stop them?"
Simple. Cancel that China PNTR scam Clinton/Gore supported in 2000. Without free trade, China wouldn't be generating as much WMDs. If it weren't for that free trade deal, our jobs wouldn't be going to China and we wouldn't be importing their cheap trash.

Works for me. Though I cdon't think it would slow down the Chinese arms industry at all.
Hmmm, you know? Maybe cancelling China PNTR wouldn't quite stop them from manufacturing more WMDs unless their metal production peaked out. They've been funelling not only the Darfur genocide but also the militants in Pakistan who are suppressing their own people and carrying out their terrorist attacks in Afghanistan, India, and even in metropolitan areas in Pakistan itself. Maybe the Chinese are getting more desperate and trying to outdo the arms race.

double post
to one and all; there can be no more denial, that our government the u.s.a, is bought and paid for by the zionists. their ground assault on GULAG GAZA has begun.
All ways the Jews fault huh? Maybe we should put all the "Zionists" in camps too I suppose?
What's wrong with holding the zionists accountable since they are the ones killing innocent civilians? Quit mixing up Jews with zionists. Not all Jews are zionist NAZIs.
Terrance Mitchell
Redfield, South Dakota
Well that all depends on what you consider a Zionist is. I consider Zionist being those Jews who support the Israel as a nation, is that what you consider Zionist?
That's only the dictionary definition. You sounded as if you were lumping zionists and jews together. Not all Jews are zionists FYI and they are sick and tired of having to live in constant terror and insecurity thanks to the zionists running the country. Besides, like Saudi Arabia there's no middle class in Israel and I doubt you'd be proud of it. As far as I'm concerned, both the zionists and Hamas are destructive to the Palestinians. As far as the Jews are concerned, I don't see how you can be so proud of the zionists giving the Jews a bad rap.

There are also many Christian Zionists, especially here in America....like, tens of millions probably. Far more than there are Jews in the world.
zmann,
Exactly. There are plenty in my state no doubt although I got to admit they weren't quite as active this past 2008 election. Zionists lose control of their minds to the point of making strange bedfellows with terrorist organizations they loudly proclaim to be against. As I see it, both the Jews and Palestinians are in for long term defeat. I also notice that "dagger" lives in a rightwing bubble and will often defend the conservative corporatists. He only shows up when issues such as weapons get posted on this site. He's probably some rich snob. Even I learned that guns don't solve problems. If it weren't for obstructionists such as "dagger", our nation would be number one in single payer healthcare and not exporting WMDs to the point of unilateral disarmament. Even Nixon and Reagan knew where to draw the line on exporting arms.

I live pay chech to pay check pal, I can not afford to go to the doctor, I think universal health care is way over due and we need anther TR to bust up these corporations, I am still waiting for some one to tell me what a Zionist is, no seems to know on these post. It is one of those arbitrary words people through out like facist or Nazie when describing some one whom they disagree with. Yes I am right wing in spite of my left views on health care and corporations. The left seem to think goverment is going to be there when you need help but the plan fact is they are not, better learn to take care of yourself and your family. Only those who can fend for them self will servive when the world goes to hell. I feel sory for those who live in large cities or gated comunitys, when colamity comes they are going to be in trouble.
the right to share arms.
The American government has always maintained the right of its citizens to ship arms to belligerents. President Washington, through his Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, and his Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, took this position when France protested against the sale of arms to England in 1793, the answer being that "the exporting from the United States of warlike instruments and military stores is not to be interfered with." - Theodore Roosevelt's "Fear God..."p.160
gun runners from the get-go.
What arms was the US selling to England? Sure was not Muskets, the US did not start producing thier own untill 1795. I can not thing of what England would need from the US unless is was cannon or powder. If it were not for the US suppling arms to England before the US became involved in WWII, England would have fallen to the Germans and your telling me that would have been a good thing? I belive Theodore Roosevelt was refering to the German U-boats destroying US vessals exsporting products to England which I think was the reason the US entered WWI.
"If it were not for the US suppling arms to England before the US became involved in WWII, England would have fallen to the Germans and your telling me that would have been a good thing?"
That's a complete lie. England already fell to the Germans because it had too many dirty business ties to them and they were sitting silent just like they do today. You sound like you're a paid spokesman of the Military Industrial Complex. For the US to ship arms to rogue nations everyday shows that it is becoming more of a unilateral disarmament nation, something Reagan was against back in the 1980s. You conservatives never learned the correct lessons from Reagan and then you wonder why folks like myself left you bastards.

the cache of ammo on the Lusitania, long denied by peaceloving Americans, has recently been verified.

I'll bet "dagger" will invent another "right to defend oneself" argument against what you posted. Thanks for sharing that insightful info. Most Americans to begin with don't know that. If they did, at least half of us with a brain would know where to draw the line. Load a boat with too much explosive ammo and the boat's far more likely to be an accident casualty than it is to defend itself.

I'm sure thats a great comfort to the men, women and children that died there. They sunk the Lusitania without notice. Did you miss that?
They bombed Hiroshima without any notice. Did YOU miss that?
We manufactured the best rifles in the world and sold them to England. Cannon and Caisons too. Complete batteries as a matter of fact.
Nice to know we can still export something more tangible than bullshit.
Excellent comment!
We get enough of that from those who post on this site.
Yeah, from zionist NAZIs such as bligh4, goose4, letto, etc ...

The Glue That Holds Chaos Together
It is no secret that the Pentagon has been playing a shell game with our money. If we could cut all funding to the Pentagon, and our armed forces, then perhaps they would have incentive to provide a complete account of our money that is being pissed away, and possibly provide a comprehensive budget.
The real issue here is, why are we allowing the Congress and Senate to give themselves cost of living wages when they can't tell us what they can't keep track of the money that they have stolen from us. Also, I don't think that I should have to pay a dime for a military that does not protect us. To the contrary, we are paying for a military that has done everything to undermine our civil rights and has made the world less safe for all of us. It is obvious hat the real threat are organizations like Blackwater... and the Army, Navy, and Airforce don't have the balls to take them down.
To carry the author's title reference to Michael Jackson's anthem "We Are the World" just a bit further:

We arm the world
We arm the children
We make it hard for people everywhere to just keep livin'
This is war we're making
We're taking many lives
It's true, we devastate the world, you and me

Wonder if we can get an all-star cast to sing along, do a fundraiser for medical relief to war zones?
We're Number one!!

The older I get, the more I wonder what ever happened to the Party of Eisenhauer.
sorry double post
Well keep in mind that Ike only metioned the Miltary Industrial Congressional Complex on his way OUT THE DOOR! Not to discredit him;rather the point is it was impossible to be president and even nominally controll the MICC as JFK found out.
On that note and in answer to your question EVERYONE MUST READ THE NEW RUSS BAKER BOOK, FAMILY OF SECRETS. THIS LOOKS LIKE JUST ONE MORE BUSH BOOK.
ITS NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUY IS IT NOT. Russ Baker founded the Real News Network that is listed on the sidebar here. YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THE NEW STUFF ON H.W. BUSHS ROLE IN THE JFK ASSASSINATION AND WATERGATE IN THIS BOOK.
They cannot flying saucer this dude; hes credentialed up the kazoodles including editor of Columbia Journalism Review. I cannot believe all the new stuff I learned even though I have read twenty books on JFK and six on Watergate. Wait till you see what he has on the relationship btw. John Dean and the "historian" Stanley Kutler!

Thank you Frida for covering it all. The more America exports weapons, the poorer it gets. Let's all team up and pressure Obama and Congress to stop this WMD exporting madness. Additionally, any country that's also shipping WMDs must be revoked from our list of trading partners. No more "free trade". In fact, there is no such thing as "free trade". It's just an oxymoronic term designed to delude us all. We can cut down our national debt big time by cutting down our exportation of arms.
Terrance Mitchell

Methinks the manufactories producing weapons are the only part of the US economy left which is profitable -- I've yet to read of a company churning out new bombs, airplanes or armored vehicles begging the State for a bailout!
For some years now, the number one US manufacturing export has been military armaments. Check out the Global Network site for many details, and plans for CONVERSION from a war to a peace economy:

"I've yet to read of a company churning out new bombs, airplanes or armored vehicles begging the State for a bailout!"
I recall reading an article on this site which pointed out your quote and confirmed it too. But I do think that they're already getting what I'd call pre-bailouts as "free insurance" so that we will never rise up and take on the arms industries.
Terrance Mitchell
Redfield, South Dakota
True, but consider a "bailout" as comparable to a "blood transfusion"-- the government donating several hundred millions of gallons of blood to financial institutions.
The military/industrial complex is EMBEDDED in the government, like a tumor, insofar as the Pentagon is a mega-customer and symbiotic partner of arms manufacturers. So there's really no need for EXTERNAL procedures like a bailout/blood transfusion.
There's a vast corps or taxonomy of military contractors, military officers and civilian officials, lobbyists, legislative staff, legislators, etc. pumping the lifeblood of revenue into this organism. The valves are welded or rusted wide open; the government has an obsessive-compulsive greed for the instruments of war, and demand may accordingly be adjusted, but never critically reduced.
Thus, revenue supply is regulated internally-- and the prevailing sociopolitical metabolism prioritizes the existence of a secure and profitable armaments market.

I fear that the human race may very well be too primitive to avoid blowing up the planet.
The problem is this... technology is amoral. That fact, combined with our maniacal capitalist 'bigger, better, faster' team motto, I don't see us choosing a future that can last. Instead we appear to be rushing at the cliffs edge of fearsome and devastating super weapons. As soon as these things come to fruition... nuclear weapons will either be a less destructive footnote in comparison, or the final concluding response to the future.
Peace be with every man.

THE INTERNET IS NOT WORKING.
ONLY THE LEFT READ THIS STUFF. IT TAKES PRESSURE OFF CNN SO THEY CAN LIE MORE WITH FAKE LEFT ALTERNATIVES.
The only thing that can be done is to post stuff that attacks the corporate media where EVERYONE CAN SEE IT ACCROSSS THE POLITICAL SPECTRUM.
Alternative media doesnt work because it only creates alternative nich markets divided into a thousand splinters. Im not agains it but it HAS TO GO ON THE OFFENSIVE AGAINS THE CORPORATE SCUM. TO JUST BE AN "ALTERNATIVE" ONL TAKES PRESSURE OFF THEM AND COULDPARTADOXICALLY HELP THE CORPORATE MEDIA.
Please read JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters, or people will remain thinking that the Presidents Chosen by Wolf Blitzer will change everything, and we-- as a species will devlove into quivering lime Jello, and not even cold quiverin
Anyone have specific ideas for how to get messages outside of our "alternative media" sub-communities into the "mainstream" consciousness?
That said, i don't actually believe all our work is simply "not working" or just "paradoxically helping" the corporate media. Amy Goodman reaches millions of people in the US every week, and her tireless work continues to grow her audience year-by-year.
Use sites like CD to get your facts straight, then strike out at and challenge the mainstream media.
I wrote a harsh email to an AP White House correspondent who had published an article attempting to gloss over and white wash the missile defense program, within 12 hours he amended his article to acknowledge at least some level of controversy.
His article aimed to link missile defense solely to the risk of Iranian nukes. I ripped on him... reminding that Iran possessed 0 nukes while Russia has 10,000+ and China several hundred and growing. I also enumerated the additional missile defense sites under development that he avoided drawing attention to- including Great Britain, Alaska, California, and very likely Iraq and especially Afghanistan located right on Russia and China's border. And I railed on how the missile defense program is in fact not a novel idea, but instead was understood during the Cold War to be at odds with nuclear detente and disarmament, and both sides had agreed not to pursue it further as it was actually defined as a first strike weapon, not purely defensive.
Anger is good. Let your voice be heard. These military industrial complex salesmen deserve no politeness or etiquette. They pull the rightwing strings that tear apart the messages of leftist progressives. They must be met with an better informed, angrier and louder voice of dissent to send them back under the rock from which they came.
and while the white house, congress, corporations, media are already beating the war drums against "the greatest threat to world peace and security" IRAN - remind them that IRAN has NEVER invaded or made war against a neighboring country for the LAST TWO HUNDRED YEARS - and mainly went to war in DEFENSE against invasions -- SUCH AS the invasion by Saddam Hussein who was THEN a CLIENT of the CIA , NSA, US MILITARY and US government and corporations.
but then which country has instigated WARS abroad for the last 150 years -0- MORE than ANY other country or countries COMBINED?
the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA -- all based on "threats and enemies" to National security --
over THERE -- thousdans or hundreds of miles away where the USA has NO BUSINESS poking its nose in the internal affairs of other nations .
there is No question -- the USA is the most MEDDLESOME nation EVER seen on the face of the planet. and has caused - with its ENDLESS meddling MORE disastrous consequences than necessary.
and ALWAYS , ALWAYS shouting about "the reds are going to invade us and destroy our way of life" __-- while ENCIRCLING russia and china for THEIR oil, gas, natrual resources, cheap labor and geopolitical positions!
ALWAYS shouting about how the "EVIL VIETCONG are going to INVADE US and destroy our freedoms" while going THOUSANDS of miles AWAY , INVADING a region it does not belong to and which is NOT interested in "changing america" but just wanted to be left alone to make their own history and decisions...to "protect america" .
ALWAYS shouting about the "NEXT HITLER" - whether it was the Iranian Ayatollahs after the CIA Supported TORTURE REGIME of the SHAH of Iran - or "evil ahmedinejad" - or the "theocratic Iran that doesn't give *freedom to women*" (even if 30 percent of doctors in iran ARE women...and who HAVE the absolute right to DEMAND divorce AND support..AND freely can use contraception UNLIKE in the USA...lol, and actually mostly have NO problem with wearing the veil as THEIR culture dictates -- ) while THREATENING iran with invasion ...
ALWAYS shouting about "foreign spies meddling in our affairs" ....while having toppled governments and economies with theCIA and NSA and other unknown US entities - and bush actually spending 500 million dollars to foment a "revolution in iran".......
i mean -- my gosh -- the HUBRIS and HYPOCRISY of the USA leadership , industries and intellectual leaders are BREATHTAKING in their UTTER corruption and mendacity!!
"Alternative media doesnt work because it only creates alternative nich markets divided into a thousand splinters."
Good point, though it seems to me that alternative media just doesn't reach enough people - certainly not the mainstream.
"TO JUST BE AN "ALTERNATIVE" ONL TAKES PRESSURE OFF THEM AND COULDPARTADOXICALLY HELP THE CORPORATE MEDIA."
This, I don't understand. I would rather have an informed minority than an ignorant totality. Plus, it doesn't necessarily take a majority of people to change things, but a critical mass of people, which is often the minority.
However, I take your larger point that the media is the problem here. The ruling elites have always known that when you control the media, you control public opinion.
Those who create the news, create the present, past, and future (with apologies to George Orwell).
"All Nature's difference keeps all Nature's peace." Alexander Pope
With so many military weapons flooding the world, many untraceable, some percentage of them will osmose into civilian and criminal society. Will the world eventually reach a point of concentration in weaponry where it will be moot for any country to even mention arms control?
"IT IS WHAT GREAT SADNESS AND SHAME THAT I MUST SAY THAT THE GREATEST PURVEYOR OF VIOLENCE IN THE WORLD TODAY IS MY OWN GOVERNMENT AND COUNTRY ... THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA".......DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
basically - for saying THAT - he was killed. that is what it amounts to.
Have any of you seen the movie, "Lord of War"? I believe every American should be required to watch it.
Does anyone else remember that on September 10, 2001, the sneering VICE-president told us that the Pentagon could not account for over 2 TRILLION dollars? Of course, the events he directed the next day erased that factoid from American radar screens forever.
Does anyone remember when it was revealed that a couple of TONS of $100 bills sent to Iraq for wages and 'negotiating' had disappeared? How about the 2 plane loads of AK-47's and handguns that 'disappeared', too?
Wonder what the chances would be that if we sent the entire Bush Crime family to Iraq, they'd disappear, too? (of course, they're going to 'disappear' to their private country with their private army, which has already been absolved of any crimes they MIGHT do in the future by Paraguay) Crazy world we live in, huh???
Keep your mind clear, your body healthy, and your spirit strong. Tough times have just barely begun, my friends.
