BP: 'Top Kill' Has Failed to Stop Gulf Oil Leak
BP has abandoned its most recent "top kill" effort to contain its well, a company official announced Saturday evening.
"After three full days, we have been unable to overcome the flow," said the company's chief operating officer, Doug Suttles.
In its next effort to halt what its officials have called an "environmental catastrophe," BP will cut off the leaking riser at the top of the five-story blowout preventer atop the wellhead to get an even surface on the broken pipe.
Then the company will install what's called a lower marine riser package, a cap containment system that would be connected to a new riser from the Discoverer Enterprise drillship 5,000 feet above on the surface. The aim is to minimize the amount of oil reaching the shore until BP can drill relief wells, Suttles said.
He estimated that the procedure would take about four days to complete, but if it also fails, it could be several months before BP can finish drilling two relief wells to intersect the runaway well. During that time, millions more gallons of crude oil could contaminate the Gulf of Mexico, poison wildlife, destroy fragile marshlands, close fishing grounds and deprive fisherman, resort workers and many others of their livelihoods.
Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry said officials were disappointed that the top kill method failed, but added that the Coast Guard and BP are still fighting to keep the oil from reaching the shoreline.
"It's a little bit of a roller coaster ride for everyone," she said. "Obviously, we've said we've had to prepare for a worst-case scenario from day one, that this could fail totally and release a tremendous amount more than it is releasing now."
After three days in which BP said it pumped more than 30,000 barrels of drilling lubricant known as mud into the runaway wells blowout preventer, BP engineers determined that it was time to try something else, Suttles said.
He said the decision was made in consultation with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Energy Secrtary Steven Chu, a Nobel laureate in physics.
Engineers had hoped that the drilling mud pumped into the blowout preventer using the top kill method would block the crude oil and gas from spewing out of the damaged wellhead and blowout preventer.
However, from the beginning technicians said that most of the mud flowed right back out, along with the oil and natural gas. BP halted pumping the mud for an extended period within hours after it began on Wednesday, and in the ensuing days, it also pumped debris into the blowout preventer in hopes of blocking leaks and allowing the mud to accumulate. Those efforts apparently failed, too.

Whooopp, ooop, oopp, ooop...hey Moe, it ain't woikin??? Why you....(slap, bonk on the head) imbecile....even a knothead knows ya gotta stop the oil from leakin out before it pollutes the water. Hey Moe...I gotta idea!!!! Let's stop the oil before it pollutes the water!!! Why you numbskull...whattaya think we've been tryin to do? Gee Moe...I dunno....can I have a hint, nuk, nuk...slap, why you imbecile, stop thinking and try to figure out a way to stop the oil!!! RRRRuff rufff, gee Moe why didja do that? Bonk, that's why. Hey...I got an idea! Hey Larry! RIP!!! Let's try some of this hair!!! Hey Moe, hey Larry...it's woiking!!!! The oils ain't leakin no more!!!!......
BP's technical staff hard at work.
Excellent characterization, aussidawg! How uncanny that, at the same time you were writing that, my friends were discussing a photo taken from a jetliner over the gulf showing a seascape of reddish brown oil for as far as the eye can see: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=261585&l=7e717da6f1&id=100000233758256
What's uncanny is that they were discussing how to sop up all the oil with hair. There is actually an organization that facilitates this: http://www.matteroftrust.org/images207/matteroftrust_flyer.pdf
Maybe, another thing to consider, they posible know how to
cap this but were more interested in getting the oil because
our Military Industrial Complex needs it very badly to
prosecute all the wars they are involved in right now.
When this is over--if it ever is--BP should cease to exist and every cent of its assets should be turned over for use in rehabilitating the spill area.
In fact, why wait?
I posted this before but will do so again.
BP along with a number of other Oil companies wish to drill for oil in the Arctic in Canadas postion of the Beaufort Sea.
Canadian enviromental law demands that such wells only be drilled when a RELIEF well also drilled at the same time so as to help minimize the risk of such blowouts.
BP and all of the other Oil firms claim this too onerous and too expensive. This from a firm taht makes 10+ billion plus in profits every year.
It imperative that all such exploitation of resorces take "the worst case scenario" into account and in fact accept that the worst case scenario WILL HAPPEN.
The consequences of not doing so are simply inacceptable.
What is the worst case scenario of a "Wind farm generating plant" failing?
What is thw worst case scenario of an oil well suffering a blowout.?
What is the worst case scenario of a Nuclear power plant failing?
We have had Chernobyl, and now we have the BP disaster. Was it "worth it"? I think not.
""It's a little bit of a roller coaster ride for everyone," she said. "Obviously, we've said we've had to prepare for a worst-case scenario from day one, that this could fail totally and release a tremendous amount more than it is releasing now."
What does this mean? Why does it matter what they've said from day one? This statement, which looks like it's supposed to be meaningful, is just kind of floating out there. Is it supposed to be upbeat? Does it mean they are "prepared for a worst-case scenario" now? Said all their prayers and so on?
Worst-case scenario is that huge reservoir of hot oil under extreme pressure spewing it's poison for about 7 years!!!! This idiot is trying to say that from day 1, they've been prepared for that!? What a moron.
the figure i read was 9000!!! days...
if an actual "person" cut corners and engaged in known risky behavior that led to the deaths of 11 people and the environmental disaster that we have now that "person" would be firmly in JAIL!
but if it's a corporation "hey no problem....just promise us you'll try your hardest to fix it"!
we've lost this world to the vampires....maybe in another 300 million years there'll be "intelligent" life on earth.....
a photo for perspective http://dprogram.net/2010/05/29/bp-oil-volcano-3/#more-38498
This is excellent. Thank you! Along with reading David Michael Green's latest piece, it puts this is all into perspective. Wouldn't it be nice if Obama actually watched this. But I honestly don't believe that Obama would get it -- or respond -- any better than Bush. Like the man says: "He is incapable."
sorry, scroll up for photo
Let's not exaggerate.
This is just a convicted criminal corporation, drilling 1 mile deep into the ocean and drilling 5 miles below that into the earth (deeper than allowed by their permit), not having a clue what it's really doing, with shoddy, ill-kept equipment, a dead battery supposed to play a key role in disaster prevention, no blowout preventer considered essential by the MMS in 2000 before the Cheney/Bush/Dumsfeld criminal gang neutered the agency with Repug $$$ collectors and oil industry toadies...etc.
But hey, if capping the well fails completely, that humongous lake of hot crude under phenomenal pressure 5 miles under the ocean floor will only spew its poison for 7 years...
It has to be equally dangerous drilling 'relief' wells. What indeed if similar failure(s) result? That whole reservoir released into the Gulf? I believe that would be an extinction level event. 2012?
So in other words,
The "Top Kill" procedure failed three days ago, but the "wait and see" crap coming out of BP's mouth was designed just to buy the company time to get their financial assets off shore before we storm the company and smash it into a million pieces.
The "Drilling Mud" is not mud after all; I now I find out..... any more that a machine shop uses white "milk" for drilling metal. Unless I miss my guess, it's a highly toxic cutting lubricant fluid used to irrigate drill bits, and now these phucks have poured millions of gallons of this chit into the gulf along with the crude products still exploding out of the volcano.
This is why they were reluctant to try this in the first place (opting for the "top-hat" funnel of cement instead), Five ships of this chit pumped into the water is an environmental catastrophe all by itself. Now the big question is: is the sea floor so unstable that nothing will plug it?
Are we just going to sit around for for another two months and let BP kill us all, or is Obomber going to push the button?
We are in serious peril either way.
TJ
I wonder what the next BP/Obama Dog and Pony show will be?
I think it is long past time to issue the evacuation order for the entire Gulf Coast, post a pollution warning so no-one eats the soon-to-be contaminated shellfish, lobster, and fish from the East Coast, and get ready for the justifiable shitstorm of outrage when the oil reaches the Arctic and Europe.
Yes, I know it means the death of a huge industry, and the loss of tens of thousands of jobs, and the collapse of an entire sector of the economy.
Tough shit.
Your mess, you deal with it.
Where's FEMA? Has anyone heard anyone on any news network even mention FEMA?
What do you honestly think FEMA is going to do? Don't you remember how effective they were in New Orleans?
I don't think they can do anything of any significance, but why keep them on the shelf?
You and I know better, but their presence down on the beaches would certainly go a long way to pacify idiot nation. It seems that the powers that be actually want the markets to tank, agree?
The official FEMA plan is as follows: Wait for three weeks after a disaster, then herd the survivors away from the area. Bury/conceal the dead.
FEMA already has a plan in place for the *forcible* evacuation of Florida in the event the oil (and possibly oil and Corexit 9500 contaminated rains) reaches the Florida coastline.
http://www.sott.net/articles/show/209259-Florida-Gulf-oil-spill-Plans-to-evacuate-Tampa-Bay-area-are-in-place
Have fun now...
1) the markets tank
2) the banks buy up very cheap stocks with low interest government loans
3) later the well is sealed and stocks rise again
4) banks announce very good profits for the quarter
5) markets go even higher based on the good news from the banks
6) announcement comes that the banks are now very well capitalized
At the expense of killing all life in the gulf.
FEMA would right about now be implementing Continuance Of Government procedures, making sure that machine is well oiled and ready when it is time for the elite to bail out.
Why the FUCK should anyone be "pacified" in the face of this catastrophe??? Markets "tanking" is your primary concern? Why don't we just cut all news coverage, require every citizen to consume massive doses of Prozac and Xanax, and air only the most soporific cable networks?
Pacification?!?! We should be arming ourselves and marching on Washington, D-fucking-C!!
OK, I'm drunk and bitter, right here and now. I admit it.
Before a shift can take place from the old to new, the old must undergo enough disasters to open people's minds to change and something better. We are witnessing that shift as we view collapse and disasters. How bad will it have to get to open people's minds to change? It doesn't look good does it?
Well, I'm sober this morning and, no, it doesn't look good at all.
I know the feeling Eddie, but maybe mother earth decided it was time to give a wake up call that we needed. The best we can hope for is that there will be a silver lining to all this. Many of us here have been commenting that mankind has been making a beeline toward self-extinction. Unless the majority of us wake up and wrest the reigns of the world from the elite psychopaths, the future does indeed look bleak for mankind.
Now, hold on there!
The LEAST FEMA can do is to deploy their vast fleet of formaldehyde-contaminated trailers as "content" for the Junk Shot!
no can do - there are still people living in those trailers.
this is a fine opportunity to dump all that nuclear waste from the Manhattan Project etc.
(if it hasn't already been dropped elsewhere as DUMunitions.)
Didn't Barry Obamageddon say that the safety technology has never been better for oil drill in the ocean?
Guess Barry was wrong again.
No, actually, if that's what he said, he's right; the technology HAS never been better than this, it's ALWAYS been lousy .....
You know, this has gone on for so long, no relief in sight, all the rhetoric, hemming and hawing, blame here, blame there. It's kind of a 9-11 moment. Are we being lied to? Is this somehow a (false-flag) corporate empire thing to distroy the American people. I found 4 different spill-cams yesterday, which one is the real one? Will the real POTUS please speack up!!!! HELP!!! Stop the madness!!!!
I know a lot here are not super-fans of David Michael Green, and I've gotten frustrated with what seems to be an obtuse belief that Obama is at heart a good guy. But his latest that I just read is a good read. In any case, it pulls just about every report we've heard about here and there for the last few weeks and ties it up in a really nasty picture -- a picture of a treasonous Present that should be impeached, at the very least. I'm sure it will be posted on this site by tomorrow, but here's the advance.
http://www.regressiveantidote.net/Articles/I_Can%27t_Wait_For_Barack_Obama_To_Become_President.html
And if you haven't watched it yet, catch the video of Phillipe Cousteau, who went diving with an ABC reporter for GMA last week. It shows the muck under the ocean and, as Phillipe put it, what BP doesn't want the world to see. It is frightening. It might be for spectacle that ABC did this, but who cares? People need to see something that isn't tucked away on the net somewhere.
And as to this article, there is no surprise here, definitely not after watching Maddow's excellent piece on the rig that exploded in 1979, which pipe was only 200 feet below the surface. It didn't work then, why would it work now? My God, what did you expect these people to learn in 30 years?
It's not a roller coaster ride any longer. We're into the area that has been termed "unthinkable." Another two months of this hell zit and hurricanes on the way. The Sump of Mexico is gonna slime bubbaville, and we're gonne keep on drillin'! Yee ha!
Will the slimebubba's change their thinking? Nah!
!, There is no POTUS, just a darker hued lapdog for the Oligarchy.
2. This may well kill off the food chain from the bottom up. Remember the phytoplankton that is eaten my tiny mollusks, which are eaten by small fish, on up. Also, most of the Oxygen we breathe comes from them.
We may well have killed the planet, but what the hell, a $trillion is a $trillion, do what you have to to get it.
Sorry, Gaia, this was such a beautiful planet. Maybe, if You survive, You can come up with something better next time. Try to evolve something with real intelligence.
*Too Late*
Terrible words to hear, in so many situations.
I was listening to the radio, where a man was suggesting a 'balloon' type object be forced down into the 'hole' and when down at the calculated depth, the balloon be inflated... with air I take it!.. Well, it was just his suggeston.. thinking up things that might work.. cos nothing so far is.
America has indeed become a dirty word in the world... a fearsome and dangerous killer and despoiler, not only of the people of the world outside America, but for so many millions of American-S also.
What America's powerful elite (along with the powerful elite of other countries, of course) is doing is despoiling, destroying the world it wants to rule under a One World Goverment...
So the rational idea of reducing the population to stop the need for polluting Earth, and so producing a Garden of Eden on Earth (for the powerful elite OF Earth) whilst continuing the species - some of all breathing species - is now TOO LATE!
Hung with.. etc.
Barack Obama smiles better than Bush
Barack Obama has better speaking skills than Bush
And, that is it folks.
Obama is another empty suit and fraud as I have said for the well, since before he was elected.
Barack Obama is a corporate shill/whore with absolutely no standards and will say anything to remain popular with his continued lectures to the black community about taking "personal responsibility," even as he does not do such things himself.
Mr. Obama is a total failure already and yes, a war-mongering, war criminal to boot.
Obama has done absolutely nothing so far as president but continue the policies of "do nothing" just like Mr. Bush and his crooked cronies/pals.
Obama is simply the latest face on the American Corporate-Military Empire which is completely bankrupt and amoral.
And, this ain't no Joke, Jack!!!!

Excerpt of Tony Hayward's Speech at the Peterson Institute from this past March, 2010:
“… In the current environment, bankers and the financial sector may have bumped oil companies like BP off the front pages of the newspapers, but it's a fact that energy security remains at the top of the global political and economic agenda. We have a major role to play….James Schlesinger, who served as the first US energy secretary, once quipped that Americans have only two ways of thinking about energy: "complacency and panic." I agree with the sentiment but I'd substitute the word "Americans" for "people" because very few people ANYWHERE in the world think much about where their energy comes from. And the big swings in energy markets over the past couple of years illustrate Dr. Schlesinger's basic point….Our challenge today is how to balance energy security, employment and economic development, with the issue of climate change. I firmly believe we can do it, but not without first acknowledging that the real problem lies above ground rather than beneath it. Getting the POLICY mix right is the surest way to avoid the traps of complacency and panic. So what underpins energy security?....Take for example the US Gulf of Mexico. When BP went into the deepwater Gulf in the early 1990s, the area was known within the industry as "the dead sea." However, as a result of the technology we developed - primarily advanced seismic imaging techniques - it led to a series of extraordinary discoveries. Today, one in six barrels of oil produced in the US comes from the deepwater Gulf….Similarly, the US revolution in shale gas over the past three years has been made possible thanks to new drilling and fracturing technology. That is a real game-changer when it comes to energy security in this part of the world.”—BP’s Tony Hayward's Speech at the Peterson Institute from March 23, 2010
Sounds like the oil industry and the banks are fighting for the use of their news monopoly.
and now the end is here
and so we face the final curtain
of OIL......................
An alternative to MSM BP figures on the blowout.
They have punched a hole into a vast deep abiotic deposit of oil and gas under enormous pressure. Unless stopped the flow will continue for decades and poison all of the world's oceans.
Just how big is that gusher in the Gulf of Mexico?
http://pesn.com/2010/05/23/9501654_Gulf_gusher_size/
by Paul Noel
for Pure Energy Systems News
excerpt:
"The actual size of the gush coming out of the BOP is in the order of 2 to 3 times the Riser output. Everyone can argue any numbers but this is fudged down so far that it is probably wrong by a factor of 2 or 3 being too small for reality. The numbers suggest the possibility of a Million Barrels of Oil a day spill. (I am not willing to go that far out and prefer to suggest the 350,000 BPD rate)
As was first noted here (PESN Exclusive) the process of this spill is only bringing a small fraction of the oil to the surface. (Initially I suggested to Sterling Allan that it might be only 20% or so.) It probably is only 5%. Research ships have now found massive plumes of oil beneath the sea. The process of fractioning the oil is spreading out the oil separated by molecular weight in the saltwater column density anticlines. The exact volume of oil in these plumes as a percentage of their volume is not known at this time but even assuming a tiny fraction unbelievably large volumes of oil are escaping the well. The reported volume for one plume alone was 1.7 cubic miles. (Do your own math it was 10 miles by 3 miles by 300 feet thick) There were at least 5 similar plumes found.
It is entirely safe to say that this well has been releasing more oil every day than the Exxon Valdez wreck did. Nobody wants to believe the size of the spill. History will settle the matter beyond all question that my math was probably giving a very low estimate of the well output. "
and the latest from the bbc (sic)..........
Oil giant BP says its latest attempt to stop the leak in the Gulf of Mexico has failed, and it will try another technique.
you've just got to laugh really................
There has been media discussion of the lack of a backup acoustic switch to activate the blowout preventer, but this is the first article I have seen to the effect that the preventers in use are defective. These defects were known by the MMS and the oil industry.
Criminal charges should be filed against both BP and responsible Federal officials. There might even be a paper trail to the White House on the EIS exclusions granted.
It's more than outrageous that campaign donations could buy non-enforcement of essential environmental protections.
"BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
On top of that, the oil giant has spent millions each year on lobbying — including $15.9 million last year alone — as it has tried to influence energy policy."

Gulf oil spill: The technology oil executives don't want to talk about
Craig Medred May 28, 2010, Alaska Dispatch
excerpt:
"A mini-study done for the MMS in 2002 and a lengthy "Shear Ram Capabilities Study" completed two years later had concluded that some of the new higher-grade steel being used in drill pipe couldn't be cut and sealed by existing rams. The study also noted the inability of existing rams to cut and seal pipe if there were tools inside, or slice through welded joints where sections of pipe were joined.
These inherent weaknesses in existing blowout preventers were the reason many Arctic nations -- although not the U.S. -- required oil companies to keep a second drill rig on location when drilling in case a relief well was needed to seal a blowout. BP, it should be noted, did not have a second rig on site in the Gulf of Mexico."
The water pressure at the deep leak is very high.
The pressure of the source reservoir causing the flow of escaping oil is mind boggling high, a giant pimple being squeezed by the weight of earth and water. No wonder the Deepwater Horizon exploded. It has paid the price of sticking its probiscus into something that no human engineering has yet been created to contain, and we are all going to pay the price.
As the top kill has failed and been abandoned, we have yet another "never been tried before" attempt at containment and siphoning at another part of the pipe. That siphoning will be still necessary implies the pressure of the leak is essentially uncontainable, and the major aim of BP operations is to funnel the unstoppable leak into some sort of economically exploitable resource that can keep up with the flow.
The only difference between the current leaks and the new risky solution is that BP gets to choose how to make the new leak. The only consolation is hopefully they will not make the leak much worse.
The immense pressure and flow problem is just the same. As the new proposed leak intercepts the flow to the failed top kill, the new leak may allow the current leak site to be properly buried.
Arguably the lesson which is to be painfully learnt by all, is that no one should be drilling at these depths and locations, because the engineering know how and capability does not exist, and the scale of the disaster is immense. The human race is out of its depth here.
It's time to demand that President Obama give the American people an accurate scientifically based estimate of the actual amount of oil and dispersant that has flown into the gulf and how much continues to flow each day. We have the right to know.
We need accurate daily scientific measurement of the air quality by location from the government and a definitive answer on whether or not respirators need to be used by clean-up workers. We need a baseline on the blood of clean-up workers and then continued monitoring for toxicity. We need government scientific testing on all sea food still leaving the area.
Getting any information from the government is like dealing with the Soviet Politburo. The media and BP are just as bad. They all seem to be working for BP, the money, and not the American people. Obama does not seem to be working for us either. What are we to do? Elections don't seem to do any good. Once we finally got our votes counted, we voted in 2006 and 2008 to bring home the troops and for single payer health care. Why do we even have elections? Why do we think of this country as a democracy?
I want some straight answers from Obama. I hope we get more than the hype we've been getting. All that shuck and jive worked on us during the campaign, but the time for shuck and jive a big smile and eloquent speeches is over. Obama, the time to lead is now. There is no tomorrow for your presidency. You only have now.
Amen. I agree, we should measure scientifically and be told the truth. However, our government rarely tells the truth. The seriousness of any situation stays hidden until it explodes. Think Enron, or the financial meltdown, or the abject failure of our campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq (not that we should be there in the first place), etc. etc. The EPA didn't tell the truth about how dangerous the air was around Ground Zero. They lie and minimize. This catastrophe may be far greater than any of us can imagine.
