Ice Shelf About to Break Away From Antarctica
New rifts' appeared this week along Wilkins; shelf holds back ice on land
PARIS - A massive ice shelf anchored to the Antarctic coast by a narrow and quickly deteriorating ice bridge could break away soon, the European Space Agency warned Friday.
The Paris-based agency said satellite images show the bridge that connects the Wilkins Ice Shelf to Charcot and Latady Islands "looks set to collapse."
"The beginning of what appears to be the demise of the ice bridge began this week when new rifts" appeared and a large block of ice broke away, it said.
The Wilkins Ice Shelf - which like the rest of Antarctic's ice sheet "was formed by thousands of years of accumulated and compacted snow" - had been stable for most of the last century before it began retreating in the 1990s, the statement said.
The shelf, which was originally of Jamaica or the U.S. state of Connecticut, is located on the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula, which thrusts up from the continent toward the southern tip of South America.
Originally covering about 5,000 square miles, the ice shelf lost 14 percent of its mass last year alone, the statement quotes a scientist Angelika Humbert of Germany's Munster University as saying.
In two 2008 incidents, large chunks of the ice bridge fell away, shaving it down to just 985 yards across at its narrowest, the statement said.
As a result, "in the past months, we have observed the ice bridge deforming and its narrowest location acting as a kind of hinge," Humbert is quoted as saying.
Scientist are examining whether global warming is behind the shelf's breakup, the statement said. Average temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula have risen by 3.8 degrees Fahrenheit over the past half century, the statement said - higher than the average global rise.

Show AllPlease notice the quake in Italy this AM. Visit USGS.gov/earthquake etc once a week to keep up on it.
It's starting to cascade now. So let's try to figure what comes next.
Antarctica: when that ice bridge goes, as they point out, the glacier behind it will move more. added snow this winter will inc weight of it, could hasten movement.
Mid-Atlantic ridge: showing more activity recently (9 months). The story, BTW, of past climate change is in the magnetic striping along both sides of that ridge.
Seismic activity is already picking up in the US and Alaska, and there are rumblings in Utah, Wy and the NW in general. The prediction for that would be the risk, worse case of the Yellowstone caldera popping.
G'land will generate reports this summer of "melting even faster than experts previously expected". Some of its ice sheet will be reported as "beginning to de-stablize".
Rising sea level--only a few inches-- will be revealed to be higher at the equator than at the poles. That will affect the stability of the Cape Verde (?) island that is set to slide into the Atlantic, and the gov't will set up a tsunami warning system on the east coast. Beach property will be cheap. 6-8 months max.
There will be increased seismic activity in general in the Pacific.
In the next year or so, there will be at least two very messy natural events that will be hard to deny coming from the tipping point mechanics.
Methane levels will be released to the general public.
We've been kept in the dark for over a decade. This info, etc has been available to the elite (here we go---off the deep end) for some time.
Consider the timing of the financial meltdown, the concentration of wealth, the stolen elections, Gore's counter-move with the movie and book (for which he deserves the medal of something grand---oh, yeah, already got it), the bogus "bailouts", disappearing money, bad mortgages in CA and FL, public assumption of insurance (AIG), gov't and industry denial, on and on.
The real message is that the rich are being set up to survive. The rest of us? Hope your feelings aren't hurt.
Well you can't eat money. We've got 'em outnumbered, that's for sure.
Any comments? Or is this just too far gone?
Maybe the DARPA funded HAARP behind it? You know, the military causes some earth quakes, volcanoes to erupt, breaks up a couple of ice shelfs, destabilize some glaciers to convince us of AGW so we can pay a carbon tax and increase their defense budgets. Hmm. I had not considered that angle.
Sarcasm duly noted.
Check the USGS/earthquake page 8-30 days' activity and count the quakes along plate boundaries. Also compare the maps of US activity now with 6 and 12 months ago. A year ago there were none in Utah or Montana, and CA had only coastal activity. The level in AK has also increased over 6 mos.
Let's talk again in the fall.
"The shelf, which was originally of Jamaica or the U.S. state of Connecticut"
So in a previous NYT Israel article, we had a bushism of flaunting in place of flouting and here we have what should read as "originally the size of Jamaica" in the AP.
I heard that the Newspapers had fallen on hard times, but have they started to outsource the proof reading to a foreign countries now too?
hey theinitiate I have a suggestion for you.....
Why dont you start going to catholic mass, you'd get all the ceremony, pomp and religious thrill you seem to recieve believing all the self evident lies they are feeding you without having to throw us back to the stone age.
Its getting colder not warmer. Haven't you noticed they're no longer calling it "global warming" but "climate change" now? Look around even in the slavish lapdog media and you'll see a rapid "cooling" of enthusiasm for "global warming".
Here's the basic equation; 3rd world has 10 babies per couple per generation. Many of them immigrate to the 1st world and start having 10 babies per couple. THIS is the source of ALL the worlds problems (water, electricity, oil, food, heating, quality of life etc).
Dude you should be a missionary lol.....
Ok -lets all just continue as we have been - and see what happens. Which scenario whould you rather see in the future... Those who did not believe climate change was caused by humans saying I told you so when everything turns out to be ok and life is hunky dory... or those who fought to prevent climate change saying I TOLD YOU SO WHEN WE'RE ALL RUNNING FROM FLOOD WATERS, MAJOR CITIES FIGHTING INUNDATION, THE MIDWEST EXPERIANCING NOT SO MANY TORNADOES THAT NO ONE WANTS TO LIVE THEIR ANYMORE. HURRICANES WIPING OUT MAJOR CITIES EVERY YEAR... (OH WAIT WE PRETTY MUCH HAVE THAT NOW... )AND DROUGHT BRING AGRICULTURE AS WE TO A SCREAMING HALT...EVEN THOSE WITH THEIR OWN LITTLE GARDENS.
SO LET'S SIT AROUND AND TWITTLE OUR THUMBS...OH AND LIVE TO HILT...
Maybe instead of pretending that we can change climate, we should prepare for the change. Climate has always changed, with or without man.

Money is the root of ALL this evil . . . . . Bottom Line
You lot will believe any thing.

Right on! This is just what I've been trying to say. Austerity. Cut the emissions by going with out. Your ideas are great. This is the only way to reduce our energy consumption and to DRASTICALLY CUT OUR C02 EMISSIONS...
BUT HOW ARE WE GOING TO GET PEOPLE TO GO ALONG WITH THIS? LIKE THE ONE PERSON ABOVE WHO STILL THINKS THAT CLIMATE CHANGE IS A NATURAL CYCLE.
THe idea of rationing would mean it would have to be law. This is fine but it may also create problems in respect to those who don't believe we are creating the problem and who knows what could come of that situation.
Look at the Amish. Now, before anyone gets themselves tied up in a knot, I'm only trying to say that they seem to make out very well by not using electricity and automobiles. Maybe adopting some of their practices and the way they organize themselves for effectiveness and efficiency, would help us understand how to do the no or less electricity thing...
Mother erath magazines has many ways to lessen usage...
But the way we agre going about this supposed reduction of c02 output is LAUGHABLE. THERE IS NO WAY WE CAN REDUCE CO2 WITH TAKING DRASTIC MEASURES. LIKE I'VE SAID BEFORE DO WE NEED ALL THOSE LIGHTS ON IN LAS VAGAS- I MEAN COME ON WHAT A WASTE- I SAY ENOUGH LIGHTING TO KEEP THE STREETS SAFE. BUT ALL THAT WASTED NEON...PLEASE THAT SAME GOES FOR MANY OTHER CITIES... WE ARE NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH IF WE'RE STILL BLAZING UNECESSARY LIGHTING INTO THE SKIES ENOUGH TO OBLITERATE THE MOON AND STARS...
So if the Artic ice cap is dissappearing fast, no surprises that warming happens down south as well.
Just increasing the proportion of renewable electricity generation is not going to save the ice any more. Fossil fuel burning totals have to be cut fast, whether or not there is a carbon nuetral replacement. Cutting carbon emissions fast requires doing without a whole lot. It means bringing the economy to a near stand still, on minimum human life support. It means tightening the belts, reducing consumption to the minimum, and going hungry, and above all using less energy.
Turning off the lights for just 1 hour a year, as if this becomes the total we ever increasing consumers can do for the earth, is an grevious insult to Gaia. Why not turn off just about everything for a couple of days a week. How about 2 low energy sabbaths a week. Thou shalt rest and consume the least amount possible. Take a whole day out the working week, and one on the weekend. Leave everything off but the fridge. Communal meals only. People would go crazy without their computers and electronic entertainment, and might have to socialize and visit their outer world again. How else shall a world wide 40% quick reduction in emissions rate be achieved?
Limited real capacity for emissions means rationing of the activities that cause them. Get real. Get Austerity, as many times a week that it takes.
Why not replace electric and fuel powered work with people labour as much as possible. People used to do the work that machines now do. No matter that some of it was slavery and physically hard. In this time of great unemployment, and simultaneous replacement of people by machines and increasing emissions, and cheap corporate labour slaves overseas, why not solve both problems at once?
What was done with wasteful carbon emissions must now be done with something else, or not done at all.
Ok, I looked up rapid climate change on the NOAA site. I put in 30 yrss - what I got back was, yes there can be rapid abrupt climate changes, which are brought on by "a set of mechanisms crucial to the existance of abrupt climate change are positive feedbacks"
So there was more, it sounds like to me that there has to be a climate change process already in place, which comes to a tipping point, causing the triggering of rapid climate change.
THe point is, why help the process - if there is any slow moving climate change occureing -why add to it=why bring on the tipping point with ALL THAT CO2 IN THE AIR... THIS IS A PROVEN POINT THAT CO2 CAN BRING THIS ON...
don't beat yourself up j.c. we are screwed............it's only a matter of time.
(and lies and money.)
The truth is, the main Antarctic ice sheet is getting colder. The ice is not shrinking, it’s growing.
The shelf ice is really thin. In terms of total volume, it’s miniscule. It’s impressive because it has a broad area, but it is really thin. Since it is already in the water, it's breaking up does nothing to raise sea levels.
The warmer temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula are due to slightly warmer waters brought in from ocean currents, but on the mainland where most of the ice is, which is 2-3 miles thick, temperatures are getting colder.
Wow, I thought I edited that above response... too much going on here...
Speaking of people not understanding the climate change situation... someone just stopped by my house earlier. When we started talking about climate change, his response was, "yeah, you don't know. It could be just natural changes the way climate has changed before or it could be a little bit of the pollution, too.
So... of course I had to behave mysself... So I stated the response that I rarely hear someone use when confronted with this...
Yes, but when the climate changes naturally, it's a slow change, so that life can adapt with it... plant life and animal life. There's time for the environment to act on the different species to bring about genetic changes which allow that adaptation, allows for modifications over a very long period of time.
What's happening now is that the climate is changing so fast that life can not keep up with those environmental changes. So different species are not able to make the genetic changes which allow for coping with new climate possibilities...
So doesn't it look like humans are having a bit of an issue with adapting ?
What we are having trouble with, is letting go of money, being so caught up with the idea that survival has to do with having a lot of money. Those at the top of the money heap only see this as an economic issue... So many are worried about HOW MUCH THIS WILL COST... HOW MUCH IT WILL COST TO SAVE THE PLANET, HOW MUCH IT WILL COST TO STOP SPEWING CO2 INTO THE AIR... HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO GET OFF OIL- (ALL THE MONEY THEY'LL BE GIVING UP). hOW THEY CAN'T LET THE DISTRIBUTION OF ENERGY BECOME DECENTRALIZED-BECAUSE THEN THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO MAKE BIG BUCKS.
THOSE AT THE TOP DO NOT REALIZE THAT ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD WON'T SAVE THEM OR THEIR CHILDREN OR GRANDCHILDREN ONCE THE CLIMATE SHIT REALLY HITS THE FAN....
AND MOST PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE INTRICACIES OF LIFE ON THIS PLANET. LIKE HOW THE FLORA AND ALL THE REST OF THE TINY, TINY LIFE IN THE OCEAN HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH OUR SURVIVAL. THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT AT THIS VERY MOMENT MUCH OF THAT TINY LIFE IS IN JEOPARDY OF NOT FLOURISING THE WAY WE NEED IT TO FOR OUR VERY SURVIVAL.
tHERE IS MUCH THAT MANY PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW BECAUSE ALL THEY DO IS WATCH A LITTLE NEWS ON TV AND THEN THEY THINK THEY UNDERSTAND AND ARE INFORMED.
HELL I'M NOT INFORMED ENOUGH... I NNEED TO KNOW MORE, BUT I'VE READ ENOUGH TO KNOW WHO IS TELLING IT LIFE IT IS AND WHO ISN'T...
ANTHER EXAMPLE IS A PERSON WHO SAID TO ME WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE G-20 MEETINGS AND WHAT OBAMA WAS SAYING. THIS PERSON SAID "THEN THEY HAD TO GO AND PROTEST,MAKE TROUBLE... SO I SAID "WELL, THEY KNOW THEY HAVE TO HOLD THE LEADERS FEET TO THE FIRE OR NOTHING WILL GET DONE."
Information like this is what needs to be on the daily news reports for all to see and understand. Yes, most people do kind of get that climate change is real now, but and I say but, they do not understand that we have to move now and make drastic changes, now...
What I have noticed is that advertisements on tv are presented in a way to make one think, well, look, see "they're" onto it, "they're" on top of it. We are getting this undercontrol... in other words, it seems to smooth over the drastic situation we are in. So, everyone has a tendency to sit back and think everything will work out in a happy ending...like a fairy tale.
Oh, that's right, those people in Europe... they are NOT SITTING BACK ON THEIR CUSHY COUCHES AND LETTING "THEY" TAKE CAARE OF THE PROPLEM. THE PEOPLE IN EUROPE KNOW THAT WE HAVE TO HOLD "THEY'RE" FEET TO THE FIRE IN ORDER TO GET SOMETHING DONE NOW!!!!!!!
tHIS GOES FOR ME TOO. i WAS FRPTESTING... BUT BECAUSE OF MY JOB ROUTINE CHANGING, I CAN'T DO THE SAME THING ANYMORE.
I'm trying to teach my family... recycling, growing a garden but there are other things, I drive too far to work... but there is nothing around here that would pay my mortgage... But i do drive a 4 cylinder...
We've started a practice of constantly making sure the lights aare off... At night we even burn a candle while we relax in the living room or eat dinner. I use the dryer very little, hanging clothes out more and more as spring comes.
But if our culture doesn't change, if our lifestyles do not change, if our infrastucture doesn't change, then nothing of significance will change. This change has to deep deep lifestyle change. I wish the constant emphasis on "our growing deman for electricity" would
Spaceship earth is heading toward the sun.
ahhhhhhhhh yeah, that's it............bummer.
but isn't it supposed to be another 4 billion years away?????????? (according to carl sagan)
Perhaps, but well before the orbital period of Earth changes, the denial-induced catatonic spaceship passengers will run out of room to multiply, water to drink and defecate in, air to breathe and to spew garbage into, and little cheese snacks and tiny napkins. That is if the air conditioning problem on the spaceship does not kill them first. Wrap one's simplistic, yet glib, conservative mind around that.
