‘Cage Bush, Not Sydney’
A giant banner saying “Cage Bush. Not Sydney” could be slung from the top of Town Hall, under a proposal to be voted on by the City of Sydney tonight.
The Deputy Lord Mayor, Chris Harris, from the Greens, has called on councillors to support his motion calling for such a banner, to take a stand against crackdowns on protest at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum next month.
“As a city councillor, I am appalled that we are allowing our government to gate off our city from the people who live, work and pay rates here,” he said.
“That we would spend $600,000 on a water cannon to be used against our citizens should they exercise their democratic right to demonstrate.
“That we have converted 31 State Transit buses into mobile holding cells, and that during the APEC summit it will cost the city of Sydney hundreds of millions of dollars in lost economic activity that we will never recover.
“While I agree that we should do all we can to protect visiting leaders, it should never be at the expense of the community’s democratic rights or the economic wellbeing of our businesses and workers.”
Erecting a cage around the US President, George Bush, would ensure his safety without disrupting Sydney, he said.
Cr Harris is asking council to “take a stand for its citizens by demonstrating its disapproval of the lockdown of Sydney and the loss of the democratic rights of its citizens by erecting a banner on the Town Hall of Sydney that says ‘Cage Bush. Not Sydney”‘.
The Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, would not say if she would support the motion.
“Sydney, as a global city, should be able to take meetings such as these in its stride,” a spokesman for Cr Moore said yesterday. “The City of Sydney is investigating ways to alleviate the impact on residents, and that’s what we’ll be concentrating on.”
Residents who find their parking spots have been turned into clearways during the summit may be able to park free in the Domain car park, the spokesman said. “We are certainly investigating it.”

Bush in a cage. Now there’s a happy thought….
mmmmm… justice… how sweet the word.
Peace to you and yours.
I love it! Too bad it didn’t happen in Montebello.
I can’t help thinking the reason the Apec crowd insist in disrupting cities is an arrogant show of power to let us know they are boss. A portable Nuremburg Rally.
Like the pope, in his little car… The Bushmobile.
It’s kinda cute when you think about it, and he might even like it if they’ll let him pretend to be Batman while riding around.
I think just getting Bush the Pope-mobile, or “Bush-Mobile” should solve the problem. Hearing and seeing the hate that his presense engenders, even through plexiglass, might enlighten him a bit as to the consequences of his policies.
Anyone else notice the keyword? The Deputy Lord Mayor who proposed the sign is a Green! He’s an example to us all.
Australia, what a terrible way to treat your new Emperor.
Better be careful or he will designate Oz as the new Gitmo.
If progressive Democrats stay in the party, we will be taken for granted, and lose… again. If they switched to Green, we would win! Nader knows the Dem side of the oligarchy holds the purse strings and will never let progressives gain power. Do Gravel, Kucinich and other progressive Dem leaders realize this?
It’s starting to shape up like Monkey Boy’s visit to Senegal in July ‘03. Oops, I forgot, Americans didn’t get to see much of that on the network news. What does it say about Bush that wherever he goes in the world there are record numbers of people in the street to protest him? Hmm, maybe if he was allowed to see those people…
Do you really think Bush is in THAT much danger???
Whats he really done?
(Please spare me the list. This is a feeble attempt at humor.)
If you were his child, what would you think of the old man?
Peace to you and yours.
If they make a Bushmobile, they need to protect against chemical or biological attack.
Make it an air tight enclosure!
Three cheers for Sydney! Give the bastards hell!
The world would be a much safer place if Bush, Cheney, their staff, the majority of the US congress & senate (who have supported the so called “war on terror”) were all locked up in cages.
They have the blood of millions on their filthy hands. They have no respect for other human beings or the Earth. They threaten all life on this planet. The criminals must be stopped & brought to justice.
If they use paper and pencil ballots, or have an open roll call, the sign will read____ CAGE BUSH, NOT SYDNEY.
A similar sign should appear on every city hall in the U.S.
Where will he be able to vacation when he isn’t president anymore? Will he be able to walk along the Great Wall and take pictures? Will he be able to stay at the Burj Al Arab, the best hotel in the world? Will he be able to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower? Will he be able to go to New Salem and walk through Lincoln’s old town? He sure won’t be able to vacation in Sydney and see the Opera House.
It’s sad. Sad that person’s world could become so small.

I’m hoping against hope that he’ll get a very long vacation - at a site like, say, Guantanamo.
What the article does not say (and what outrages all Australians other than our sycophantic Prime Minister, John Howard) is that the better parts of the Sydney Central Business District are having a 5 foot high wall erected around them to prevent Australians from getting into their city. People living and working in that area will need to go through security barriers and processes to enter and leave their homes and places of work - they will not be allowed to bring their vehicles to their homes or workplaces. They cannot have guests stay - even family members. Sydney is,in effect being caged and closed down so that John Howard can grovel and wag his tail to that pinheaded peanut Bush.
Now there’s an image I can get behind. Bush in a cage. But why stop there? Dick, Donald, Alberto and of course chubby little Karl all in cages in Guantanamo right next to those who have been held there without charges for six years.
have they heard of a tele- conference?what a waste of money, and people will get hurt. with any luck, it might be bush.
ascott
I keep hoping that the new President (a Dem) will use the Patriot Act one last time to declare a large number of former administration members, some senators and congress people and five supreme court justices as enemy combatants and lock them away forever. There are no limits in the act as to who can be named and enemy combatant.
Then do away with that unconstitutional evil forever.
Of course my new address (Next week) will be Gitmo, or some secret prison in eastern Europe.
We already have the GEO car, use that with a bull’s eyes on all sides. It is sort of thin and almost anybody can use anything from a squirt gun to a rubber band and take a pope ooops pop shot or poop shot. But make sure bush is in it and dickie with him. Then take him out to some outback and Dundee can be a done did.
Would that the Australians would vote out their government of Bush lackeys! Australia is one of the few countries anywhere that is led by real Bush sycophants.
Are you kidding that would make sense. This is the United States of America please. We spend billions on presidential travel, it helps the poor.
Besides the repukes need to keep up the terror and fear propaganda everywhere bush goes. The republicans know if it were not for greed and fear there would be no republican party.
A swine in charge of the most invasive country on the planet, It’s a wonder that more riots are not the order of the day. Us here who are responsible for the nit-wit just sleep on.

Beware of Agent Provocateurs!
Make sure all your protesters DO NOT wear masks!
“Land of the brave, home of the free.”Not a lot of either it would appear.
The Bush caravan also includes about 600 extras. They could avoid all this trouble by going to central casting and get a George look-a-like;the intellectual input would not be affected.Or maybe he could arrive incognito, wearing a funny nose and dark glasses.
Montebello, slowly my stomach turned.
I am sure we will see rowdy demostrators that look like they are a threat to Bush. They will probably be police undercover officers.
People are losing their freedom of speech because of a few rotten apples. It turns out the few rotten apples are police officers.
If we want peaceful, respectful demonstrations we should cage the police, as well as Bush.
It’s time the world was protected from Bush and the police.
cage the monster!!! contain the evil now!!
What a wonderful idea. How come our politicians don’t let the citizens decide who should be caged for protection - our own citizens or the so-called elected reps?
Cage Bush
Justin I agree
Land of the greed and home for the fearful
Would be a more descriptive term since the bush cabal took over in 1980
Great idea! Just plop him in something like the “pope-mobile” with bullet-proof glass and let the rest of us go on with our lives. I hope they do it.
There should be a banner drapped over Bush’s cage saying
“Mission Accomplished.”
Cages, indeed for the Chimp and the rest of the APEC in residence at the Sydney Monkey House.
“Would that the Australians would vote out their government of Bush lackeys! Australia is one of the few countries anywhere that is led by real Bush sycophants.”
Truer words were never spoken. While on the topic let’s not forget the biggest puppet master of ‘em all - Rupert Murdoch , an Aussie to the tips of his fingers.
Rarely has there ever been a more evil Svengali ,openly licking his chops , drooling over the awful spectacle of all he hath wrought.
Once you get him in the cage don’t let him out. Bush and his little Dick (Cheney) should be afforded all the same rights as the detainees at Guantanamo.
Why don’t you dear Australians keep Bush? Lock his ass up and throw away the key! Maybe you could keep any other representatives of the American empire that show up too.
Cage BUSH, it won’t happen!.
First 96% of the worlds population has to convince the other 4%, comprised of Amerikans. Amerika and Israel are the only 2 western countries not part of the International Criminal Court in the Hague.
As long as Amerika does not have to adhere to International Law, millions more will be murdered.

THANKS OZ!
Great folks, great country, setting an example.
We Americans should hope their idea passes the vote and the sign goes up _ if nothing else but to prove it can be done and help us flip off that Nazi pig that’s bullying the WHOLE WORLD in our name. You think Bush will be the only American who’s not welcome traveling in other countries? Guess what? We are now the most hated people on the face of the Earth. That will not help our kids travel _ or do business in an increasingly “globalized” reality. Further, it should humble us _ the Aussies have the balls to do something like this, and we don’t.
We should, in Liberal cities and towns, be passing local resolutions PUBLICLY DECLARING THAT WE NO LONGER RECOGNIZE BUSH’S AUTHORITY due to his obvious incompentence, corruption and disingenuous behavior, not to mention his contempt for courts and the Constitution. Shame on us all. We’ve done nothing except blab on blogs. Marching doesn’t help. Time to stand up to the Neoconservative overlords and “culture.” Loudly and angrily as possible.
It would be a good day to shake the hand of the nearest Australian. Thanks, Our Good Antipodean Friends.
Ya know, I don’t think Hitler had to put up with this nonsense when he marched into Paris. Who do those Aussies think they are?
A KODACK MOMENT, indeed!
John F. Butterfield: You are my new hero.
From normal police uniforms to robocop outfits. Swat teams and all the rest. There may come a day when WE THE PEOPLE…
The sign will go up but it will be hard to read - all those pigs flying past it will obscure the view.

They could use duct tape and plastic!
Cage Bush. Not Democracy.
To me it seems the POOP MOBILE is most appropriate. George W. Bush is a walking pile of CRAP!
GWBushes father must be the most miserable man in the country as he watches sonny boy ruin the world.
Why is Bush going to A-PEC anyway—as a lame duck prez he can’t have any clout. He should be staying home and saving us some US$, so we can spend more money sending cannon fodder to Iraq. I wonder if that nasty bastard even keeps track of the body count, as he should. It is a sad number - 53 US troops killed in two weeks. By the way, oregoncharles, the key word is that the Lord Mayor is “she”, even if the Deputy, Chris, is Green. Who holds the better hand…?
Cage Bush and Condom Dick.
The Land of the Free and the home of the Brave has become
The land of the Fee and the home of the Grave.
SO sad, so sad, we have gone so bad.
Please make sure there is plenty of Bananas for “The Chimp”.
Coffeelover,,,,,
Kernal come on man bushes old man has been running the country since 1980. remember his new world order speech on 9/11/1991..
this is brilliant! they should make him wear a funny dunce hat too.
He should be given as much protection as the Iraqi citizenry.
Put Bush in a cage? sounds like prison, hey this is a good idea! Then Bush will get an idea of what jail is like so he’ll be ready to go when he’s impeached and tried for war crimes…..
if the Democrats will ever grow a spine
