Comments from National Nurses United Executive Director Bonnie Castillo, RN: Rules Committee Hearing a Step in the Right Direction for Medicare for All

WASHINGTON

Following today's hearing on the Medicare for All Act of 2019 in the House Rules Committee, National Nurses United (NNU) has issued the below statement:

"The Medicare for All Act of 2019 (H.R. 1384) is the right bill at the right time, but to make this legislation a reality will require the right action. We've seen families forced to choose between eating or paying prescription co-pays and we've seen patients forgo recommended procedures because their insurance won't cover them," said Bonnie Castillo, Executive Director of National Nurses United. "For those of us on the frontlines of health care, this first-ever full Committee hearing on Medicare for All legislation is an important first step forward that would not have happened without the mass Medicare for All movement and the leadership of the nurses nationally."

"We know that Medicare for All would eliminate these crippling expenses, and ensure that our patients - the people we took an oath to help - can receive the health care they need. Now that this legislation has been brought up in Committee, we urge Speaker Pelosi to introduce this bill on the House floor for a vote. The American people are demanding Medicare for All, and they won't be silenced. Not in their own communities, hospitals or clinics, and certainly not within the walls of Congress."

National Nurses United, with close to 185,000 members in every state, is the largest union and professional association of registered nurses in US history.
