Statement: Weatherization Funding Takes Advantage of the 'Cleanest Energy'

Infrastructure funds for the Weatherization Assistance Program will improve household energy efficiency.

WASHINGTON

President Joe Biden and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced on Wednesday $3.16 billion in new funding through the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) for residential energy upgrades. The funds, passed as part of the bipartisan infrastructure package in November, are now available for states, Native American tribes and territories to apply for. The funds will help retrofit low-income homes with more energy efficient technologies, including insulation, efficient heating and air conditioning systems and electric household appliances, such as induction stoves.

In response, Environment America Research & Policy Center Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy Senior Director Johanna Neumann released the following statement:

"The cleanest energy is the energy we don't use in the first place. More funding through the Weatherization Assistance Program will enable states to take greater advantage of tried and true energy efficiency measures. With additional funding, this program can have a dramatic impact on household energy use and deliver real benefits for Americans, including cleaner air to breathe, a more livable climate and more manageable energy bills. With today's announcement, the Biden administration is taking a key step toward a cleaner, healthier future. We're excited to see the impact it will have on communities across the country."
