Love and Solidarity with the LGBT Community

MILWAUKEE

Following the horrific massacre of 49 people - many Latinx - at a gay bar in Orlando, Voces de la Frontera issued the following statement:

"Our hearts are broken by the incomprehensible violence, and we share all our love with the LGBT community that is hurting now," said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. "It is appalling that Donald Trump is using the massacre of queer, mostly Latinx young people to, in his words, 'suspend immigration from many countries.' He is opportunistically and cynically using the tragic loss of their lives in a hate crime to promote more hate.

"The young people in Pulse on Saturday night painted a beautiful picture of what our society could be: diverse, Brown, queer, liberated, dancing, a world defined by love, not borders. They are the opposite of all that Trump represents, and it is shameful that Trump has used this tragedy as a platform for Islamophobia, xenophobia and racism. If we want to honor their lives, we can start by challenging all types of anti-LGBT legislation now being introduced at an escalated pace, which contributes to a homophobic and transphobic environment. And we can stand up to bullies who hate people for who they are, whether it's for their sexual orientation, their religion, or their immigration status."
