Obama Takes Bush’s Secrecy Games One Step Further
The ACLU is suing the Obama administration under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), seeking to force disclosure of the guidelines used by Obama officials to select which human beings (both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals) will have their lives ended by the CIA’s drone attacks (“In particular,” the group explains, the FOIA request “seeks to find out when, where and against whom drone strikes can be authorized, and how the United States ensures compliance with international laws relating to extrajudicial killing”). The Obama administration has not only refused to provide any of that information, but worse, the CIA is insisting to federal courts that it cannot even confirm or deny the existence of a drone program at all without seriously damaging national security; from the CIA’s brief in response to the ACLU lawsuit:
. . .
What makes this so appalling is not merely that the Obama administration demands the right to kill whomever it wants without having to account to anyone for its actions, choices or even claimed legal authorities, though that’s obviously bad enough (as I wrote when the ACLU lawsuit was commenced: “from a certain perspective, there’s really only one point worth making about all of this: if you think about it, it is warped beyond belief that the ACLU has to sue the U.S. Government in order to force it to disclose its claimed legal and factual bases for assassinating U.S. citizens without charges, trial or due process of any kind”). What makes it so much worse is how blatantly, insultingly false is its claim that it cannot confirm or deny the CIA drone program without damaging national security.
Numerous Obama officials — including the President himself and the CIA Director — have repeatedly boasted in public about this very program. Obama recently hailed the CIA drone program by claiming that “we are very careful in terms of how it’s been applied,” and added that it is “a targeted, focused effort at people who are on a list of active terrorists, who are trying to go in and harm Americans, hit American facilities, American bases and so on.” Obama has told playful jokes about the same drone program. Former CIA Director and current Defense Secretary Leon Panetta also likes to tell cute little jokes about CIA Predator drones, and then proclaimed in December that the drone program has “been very effective at undermining al Qaeda and their ability to plan those kinds of attacks.” Just two weeks ago, Attorney General Eric Holder gave a speech purporting to legally justify these same drone attacks.

Show AllNot that it matters much in the grand scheme of things, but the Bush-Obama tag team presidency has convinced me there is no point in voting for president, and in more cases than not, in voting for member of congress too. The system is now so corrupt by the cowardly scum that use the corporation as a shield for the crimes that there is no sense in me wasting my time voting.
Plus my county uses electronic voting machines so the vote can be easily manipulated. They do have a paper trail but as far as I have read and audit is only done when the vote is very close, around 1%. So if you are going to rig an election just be sure to keep the difference between the winner and the looser to at least around 4% or 5% just to be safe, and your crime will go undected.
Yes, democracy only exists at the local, and to some extent the state level now. We can forget the federal level. As someone wiser than me put it regarding the USA: "Already it has ceased to be a Republic and has become an Empire. The power of the electorate is fictional. Votes are worthless. Until the secrecy ends, the United States is in its death throes."
Great quote! Who said it?
I was curious about the quote, too. Per Google, here's the answer:

Go figure.
If you waste your vote on Corporate Dimocrat or GOP candidates, or you don't vote, you are complicit in the corrupt electeds' regressive and evil actions.
Your failing to vote for progressive candidates means the corporations and their puppet candidates will be there forever.
In "top two primary" races, or whenever there are no progressive candidates in a race you need to write in a candidate to prevent a fraudster from marking your ballot after you have turned it in.
I went a step further. I left the f***king country for good eight years ago after 25 years of watching it descend into Fascism, not even realizing the descent would accelerate under the next president. Best decision I ever made.
The point of this article is that you are not safe anywhere on earth from the actions of Obama, Panetta and their ilk.
It's possible Obomber fancies himself as a Clint Eastwood--or maybe its Cleavon Little (Blazing Saddles).
"...the Bush-Obama tag team presidency has convinced me there is no point in voting for president..."
NO! WRONG! This lets the 1% dominate OUR elections with THEIR corporate candidates! It plays right into their hands as they try to discourage voting by citizens.
The Green Party is the progressive alternative. The Green Party doesn't accept corporate money and represents the 99%.
5% of the vote will get the Green Party matching Federal funds.
Your Green vote sends a message to the corporate parties that selling us out to the 1% will cost them votes.
And this message is sent even if the Green you vote for loses.
VOTE GREEN!
Q: If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around, did it make a sound?
A: Yes
Q: If the tree makes a sound in the forest, but no one hears (or is allowed in the forest), did the sound make a difference?
A: No
Point is, you're fooling yourself if you think the "sound" of the Green party getting a few votes will be allowed to be heard by anyone other than the selfsame Green Party voters.
You're wrong for the following reasons:
1. As a race between a Democrat and a Republican gets closer and closer, our power grows out of proportion to our numbers. A few percentage points for the Green Party can swing a close race.
Obviously our goal isn't to make the Republican win -- It's the THREAT to the Democrats that they MAY lose in future elections if they keep selling us out. As in chess, the threat is often stronger than its execution.
2. A mere 5% of the vote will get the Green Party matching Federal funds, and a guaranteed place on the ballot.
3. Green votes make it harder to exclude the Green Party from the Presidential Debates and regional debates for Congressional elections. In debates and press interviews, Green candidates can raise issues the corporate politicians would prefer not to talk about, like single-payer health care and corporate personhood.
4. Support for the Green Party encourages others to vote Green in future elections. It builds momentum.
5. The corporatist parties must see some resistance to their bipartisan fascist assaults on the Constitution, assaults on working people with "free-trade" agreements and no single-payer health care, assaults on the environment, and assaults on consumers. YOUR GREEN VOTE EMBODIES THIS RESISTANCE.
6. Not voting would allow the corporate media to claim the Democrats didn't get support because they were "too left-wing". Your Green vote blows away this lie.
'
It's time to take OUR country back from the wealthy and their corporations!
VOTE GREEN!
I agree - If the democrats weren't Complicit in the rightward surge they would have passed Instant Runoff Voting. (IRV)
That would Expand the electorate - probably by many lefties and the other disenfranchised - thereby increasing the lefts power and the dems power. (But it would undermine the DLC)
But of course the dems fight IRV at every chance proving to be equal partners in the duopoly scam and rightward lurch for the 1%.
Besides why vote for what you don't want and Get it. aka e debs.
Why not make a tiny protest and vote for the Greens - who probably are much closer to our beliefs than either the rethugs or the demonrats.
You raise another important point: If the Democrats won't give us IRV, let's use it against them!
Look for Democratic support for IRV when they're in danger of losing elections due to the growing Green vote and winner-take-all elections!
VOTE GREEN!
I agree with everything you said except to vote Green. Caught in the rigged electoral system, everyone has his or her price. Even Greens can be bought, threatened or coopted. It is testament to effective oligarchy propaganda that we progressives should continue to believe politicians and representative government can save us.
Representative government is obviously a very effective system for funneling money to the top 1%. It was perfected and polished for hundreds of years by an all rich, all powerful global oligarchy, dedicated 24/7 to staying rich and powerful on the backs of the 99% that work for it and whom it keeps under an iron fist or velvet glove. It keeps people entertained with repetitive commercial laden sports and not so subtle teevee and film propaganda. It lets the public think that invading other countries to steal their resources and test MIC weaponry is the only thing that keeps terrsts from scaring us. That keeps people on the couch parroting the virtues of leadership (dictatorship), patriotism and religion (superstition and jingoism to kill and die for) instead of in the streets taking the world back from their puppetmasters.
When much of the country buys into FOX, organized religion and uses WS banks and corporations, it is hard enough for poor libs and progs to get a word in and harder still to bring their brothers back into the fold. So why not work within the system as well as outside of it? The Greens and maybe Libertarians could offer to coalition with the few remaining liberal Democrats to possibly swing the election to democrats and get some relief in return such as ending wars, drug wars, cut MIC funding, etc. Working within their system increases the chances of positive change, not that we should expect much from the best government money can buy and its millionaire politicians.
Direct democracy
Send them a message? Like spending a trillion dollars or two on a failed War on Drugs to send a message?
The Greens are the best in everything but strategy.
Direct democracy
Yeah, don't vote and let the Republicans win. It will feel so good to get back at Obomba that I don't even care if we lose Medicare, Social Security, Roe vs Wade, that we get more SCOTUS conservatives, that we nuke Iran and that oil goes skyward, that Republicans eliminate the EPA and the Dept. of Education, that the Pentagon gets all our taxes, that they drill baby drill on the Arctic refuge, that they crank up the WOD/Private Prisons complex, that they kill and imprison protesters, that they build more nukes, that they deregulate WS and banks like Bush did, that they take over the Internet, that they give eggs and sperm personhood, that they teach creationism to our kids, that they would legally discriminate against minorities and women, that they arrest or drone people posting here... brilliant!
I will give you that voting matters in the area of women's reproductive rights, but I think you may want to spend some time comparing your belief in Obama and the Dems with the reality of their actions.
He and the Dems finally lost me on their recent shredding of the constitution. Sorry but I just cant vote for people that come right out and say that they are quite willing to kill me or lock me up indefinitely without a trial if they don't like me, or something I said or did.
But you are of course free to endorse and legitimize these actions by voting for them, but I choose not to.
The fascists win. The system works.
Whatever Ryan proposes today will become Obama's agenda in two years...there is no difference between the parties other than the speed at which they turn the world more fascist.
The GOP is running us into a brick wall at 90 mph while the Dims are running us into a brick wall at 80 mph. Take your pick !
In Republican's war on women the lesser evil is less evil. It is the difference between fascism and conservatism. Granted its not much, but a little difference can go a long way.
I think its apparent that most of the woes that you discuss are already suffered by the subjects of the corporate imperium. It's why you need to write of the Repub threat to "CRANK UP the WOD Private Prisons complex" "build MORE nukes."
as to your other points:
Obama has already put Medicare, Social Security on the table
It looks like that whoever wins will bomb Iran after the elections. Oil is already skyward.
Obama's record on environmental issues stinks. (The Romnoid would be worse - but so would the fight about it).
The Penatgon gets more of our taxes under Obama than it has under any other President.
Clinton de-regulated Wall St also. Obama scurried back to DC from the campaign trail to vote FOR TARP, and continues to lavish zombie banks with greenbacks.
Obama has approved more nukes.
Obama's DHS co-ordinated the carckdown on Occupy and jails whistleblowers.
Nobody's giving sperm or eggs personhood. That's just more hyperbole.
In fact your post is hysterical. It amounts to this.
Yeah don't vote and the meaner fascist will win, and then the fascism will be all your fault because you didn't support the fascists who were more cultured and well spoken.
I don't know if I'll vote but I am under NO delusion that voting in the presidential elections this year is going to rein in the militarists, the empire, the banks or fascist surveillance police state. Do you really believe otherwise? I mean did you live through the past three years??!!
I really hate the Democrats & the Republicans. I'd never vote for a candidate that espouses more imperial war and more defense spending. t's why I voted Green in 2008.
Well put! While the dupes continue to vote for these fascists, they have no incentive to change
Let's give them that incentive!
VOTE GREEN! (And not just for president!)
"It's why you need to write of the Repub threat to "CRANK UP the WOD Private Prisons complex" "build MORE nukes."
How about vaginal probes then?
No thank you.
But that's the best you got?
Vote Democrat because they oppose vaginal probes.
I haven't heard the Repub prez candidates positions on vaginal probes, but I'll bet there against, or at least will be once the primary's over.
Well, I guess you'll go missing one of these days Glenn Greenwald thanks to your diligent and fearless reporting about our tricky, two faced, traitor president.
What I was thinking as I read along this article is I guess those who have been close to the targets of the Drone assassinations, whether by physical logistics or familial relations, probably have a thing or two to say about their validity or not.
I'm leaning more and more toward what NC-Tom is saying. Why vote? The whole damn thing is rigged. And even worse, it seems like no matter who ends up becoming President, the guy morphs into a merciless, war happy, heartless tyrant.
Glenn Greenwald, watch your back. You're one of the best journalists out there today. Unfortunately that probably puts you on some clandestine list, along with Chris Hedges and a few others, and soon we'll be reading about your prosecutions; that is if they don't keep it a secret. Be careful!
I don't think that Glenn is saying don't vote.
He is saying the political parties are factions that hide the real issues.
Look what he is doing? Holding people's feet to the fire. That is why you tell him to watch his back.
We are called to resist. To protest. To be super activists.
Also, Glenn travels to strange places when people agree on some of the issues. There is no group that is where he is, so he goes to Cato for a piece on drug decriminalization in Portugal. This is a REALLY important issue which the USA must face to get out of the slide to a failed empire.
And we will need to learn how to talk to others even if they are dumb, or have a different psychology that leads them to their positions.
There are things right around the corner, for example, the environment, which will drastically change the game. That is why the state is getting ready for repression. Need to act while can still post here.
And I assume that I am being tracked.
I have been tracked ever since I protested the Viet Nam occupation 45 years ago. A retired FBI agent recently told me how the government wastes billions of dollars each year tracking folks who pose absolutely no threat to the safety of Americans and very little threat to corporate profit growth.
Those billions of public treasury dollars 'wasted' on useless surveillance ARE corporate profit growth.
Good point.
Most of the security state has been privatized to assure that a % the no bid contract money finds its way in to Congressional campaign war chests.
And to make it harder to track the Company's dirty tricks. When asked about being outed as a CIA asset, Gloria Steinem, who headed a Company front group that organized US youth particiaption the Vienna Youth Conference in the early sixties, she stated that the problem was that the CIA hadn't learned the art of privatizing back then, and If it had been properly privatized, her role would still be a secret as would the CIA's role in the conference.
"tricky, two faced, traitor president," I like that. Referring to voting I am not voting ever again. All a persons vote does now is to keep the fantasy going and they keep digging the hole deeper, and deeper. No I will not support this political system any more.
Not voting is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Instead why not vote for the Greens who are next viable alternate to the Dims and the Repigs? If a green is not running in a particular race, vote against the incumbent and spoil his re-election.
Ok, you slimy little Obama-bots. Let's hear your cute little defenses of this evil, fascist dictator of a President who claims the right to murder at will without any due process of law. Let's hear you explain how he is somehow "better than Bush," or "better than a Republican." Go. I'm waiting.
No Shit - democrats are the worst bunch of lying Hypocrites to grace the political stage for quite some time.
Day after day we get story after story after story about how Obama is Worse than Bush (who would have thought that possible?)
Ad still they trot in here and defend that POS creep Obama.
If the Democratic Party didn't have Obama, they would pull in some other photogenic corporate money magnet who strings populist platitudes from here to eternity.
The Party's sole mission is to get more corporate money than the GOP.
What you don't seem to allow is a third posibility. And that's that no person occupying the office of POTUS has the ability to do anything other than what they are allowed to do by the true powers that be. I'm not saying Obama is some kind of great guy, and I personally won't get fooled again. But I do think it's a definite possibility that anyone entering the office of POTUS, whether it'd be a Kucinich or a Santorum, on their first day is "paid a visit". And during that visit they're given the old "offer they can't refuse". Let's be honest, we know there are groups in this world who think nothing of killing thousands of people for some End they feel is justified. It'd be a small step for them to basically hold the POTUS hostage as I've described.
This is one reason I'm tempted to vote for Santorum. On the face of it he's as conservative as Obama professed to be progressive. The test of my little theory would be for Santorum to assume the office and see if he sticks to his radical right agenda. OR does he steer in the same exact direction as Bush and Obama.
That may well be true, but can hardly be applied to Obama. Just a little research turns up evidence that Obama is a CIA/MIC creation. His mother was Company and so was her father. His bio-father met his mom while he was attending a CIA front sponsored educational program. His step father was a military liason to the CIA sponsored government of Surharto in Indonesia while a million leftists were being killed.
Seems like murder and assassination runs in the family. So yeah, Obama is far from a great guy. I think all this killing and secrecy come quite easily to him.
Obamas 1st job was at Business International - a purported CIA front company - where he made a multiple six figure salary - before becoming a "community organizer" for a ten times pay cut.
Wasn't Obama a community organizer infiltrator on the CIA payroll at the time ?
If Obama had a populist bone in his body he could have (even after being visited by the godfather) applied the DO NO HARM adage and spent four years fumbling, not getting anything done (being president IS a government job) which would have been light years better than the boatloads of regressive and in some cases downright evil legislation Obama has worked zealously to promote and push through.
Anybody who has worked in any large organizatiion, public or private soon realizes that in many cases that no action is the best action.
Obama is all about image and not substance. He is a corrupt true believer in the American Empire and will do anything to advance its imperialistic design ob the rest of the world. He is Bush's soul brother.
And he's been running for re-election since his inauguration. He knows what he's doing and he's been doing head fakes to fool most of the Obamabots and he's succeeded!
Elizabeth Tjader makes a chilling point--Glenn and Chris are already heavily harassed. Listen to Demonstorm: Still think the lesser evil is really so lesser?
We have an electorally facilitated tyranny--rule of law is out, except for your parking ticket, and your "unlawful" occupation/protest.
BUT, Chris, Glenn and others are still crying out. AND, we can vote for Jill Stein. If enough of us do, the LEAST it might do is upset the balance--and the Overlords do seem to still care which of their stooges wins. The BEST might be to vote Stein AND declare at every opportunity that you will never vote Rep/Dem again, ever.
If we put Jill Stein (or Rocky Anderson, or Eugene Debs) in the White House by a write-in landslide, the Congress would still be Republican and Democrat, and the federal judiciary would still be on the bench, and the difference would be that a few more Reps or Dems would have to cross party lines to override her veto (assuming all legislation doesn't come to her already veto-proof), and the Motion to Impeach her (probably for ordering the federal troops not to fire on Occupy-Whatever) would pass on first reading, and the Senate trial to convict her might take up the better part of an afternoon.
The rather likelier effect of your vote will be that you will be accused (by REALISTS) of having elected either Obama or Romney. Your hertfelt protestations that you voted against both of them will carry no weight. You did it, QED!
Keep admonishing US voters to stop wasting their votes on Democratic Party and GOP candidates until those voters agree that they are wasting their votes.
Only that as an ivy Leaguer he is Better and Smarter and Superior to everyone else.
Brings to mind a quote from a buddy who said the most dangerous person on the planet was usually an MBA graduate from an Ivy league school.
Taught Laws don't apply to them, making an extra nickle is worth any cost - as long as the cost Is borne by We the People and the profits flow to the other "superior" saviors from the ivy league.
I wonder if he had Dershowitz for any classes.
Dersh is on the right wing now, but started off pretending to bat for the left.
There have been some good lefties and liberals on the Harvard Law Faculty:
1 Duncan Kennedy who wrote Legal Education and the Reproduction of Hierarchy
2. Abe Chayes who was counsel to the Sandinista government in Nicaragua when they brought suit in the World Court against US mining of Managua harbor.
3. Mort Horowitz who pioneered ways of using tort law to benefit the masses.
There are others.
Obama pretended to be part of the more progressive faction at HLS but was also a "consensus builder" in that he could reach out to the right, but of course now we see that's because he is a rightie in leftie fur.
In retrospect, it appears likely that his company connections got Obama into Columbia & HLS, and maybe thet palyed a role in making editor of the Harvard Law Review.
He learned how to dupe silly pwogs at HLS
In the face of what Greenwald has presented, the fact that Obama can be considered by the American people to be a legitimate candidate for President is the saddest and deepest cut of all. And of course his Republican candidate, whomever that turns out to be, can fully be expected to continue the same practice, leaves us with no expectation of relief. The New America.
I'm glad those of us with a conscience, an abhorence of Obomber-ism and Bush-ism, can feel free to vote for good people. Unfortunately, dreaming that even half the repugnants and dimwits would vote that way also is just a cheap shot at your intelligence. The majority of dims and pugs will still do the goody goody dance for their candidate and vote accordingly. To dream is nice, to expect is unreal.
I can think of one animal that represents the whole lot of them, admin, Congress, corpwhoreps...hyenas. Stinky, greedy, violent, ugly damned hyenas.
The following executive order has not received much attention, but has far reaching implications. Due to the length I will do two posts. This article has not been published but the author has granted permission for use.
Big Brother gets bigger
Obama’s Executive Order an Orwellian nightmare
By George Ochenski 3-19-12
Tradition holds that politicians who wish to make an announcement -- but don’t want the press to blast it out in bold headlines -- issue their press releases late on a Friday afternoon. Following that model, the White House issued President Obama’s new Executive Order on National Defense Resources Preparedness last Friday, March 16th. Given the content and stunning breadth of the Order, it’s no surprise Obama hoped the press would overlook, underestimate and hopefully not report on his move to basically hand the nation’s private and public resources over to the political appointees heading the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, and a host of other federal agencies.
The Executive Order, which carries the weight of law, can be found online at http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/03/16/executive-order-national-defense-resources-preparedness . Although complicated, it’s not long and well worth the read since it can and at some point will undoubtedly affect the life of every American, especially in a resource-rich state like Montana.
Issued by Obama, as “Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States,” the stated purpose “delegates authorities and addresses national defense resource policies and programs under the Defense Production Act of 1950, as amended.”
It’s worth noting that 1950 was the height of the national hysteria over Communism with its main hit men being Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. In fact, it’s the year in which the term “McCarthyism” was coined to describe the radical paranoia that resulted in a national inquisition to drag anyone suspected of being a communist sympathizer into court, before Congressional committees, and even to prison, whether or not the accusations were merited.
With that background in mind, Obama has now used the legal authority from that outdated and shameful period in our nation’s history to grant new, bigger, and more intrusive powers to the president, the unelected heads of federal agencies, and a yet-to-be-formed committee to commandeer virtually any resources – natural, human, and financial – if and when they decide a “national emergency” warrants such action.
One might reasonably question what constitutes a “national emergency” that would unleash the Draconian authorities contained in the Order, but that remains amorphous. Instead, those federal agencies “responsible for plans and programs relating to national defense” are charged to “identify requirements for the full spectrum of emergencies, including essential military and civilian demand.” This same cabal of non-elected government officials would then assess “the capability of the domestic industrial and technological base to satisfy requirements in peacetime and times of national emergency” including availability of critical resource and production sources, materials, skilled labor and professional and technical personnel.
From there, things go downhill fast. Basically, the political appointees heading federal agencies are then delegated the same powers as the president “to allocate materials,
services, and facilities as deemed necessary or appropriate to promote the national defense.”
More specifically, Secretary of Energy gets control over “all forms of energy,” which “means all forms of energy including petroleum, gas (both natural and manufactured), electricity, solid fuels (including all forms of coal, coke, coal chemicals, coal liquification, and coal gasification), solar, wind, other types of renewable energy, atomic energy, and the production, conservation, use, control, and distribution (including pipelines) of all of these forms of energy.”
Secretary of Health and Human Services gets control over “health resources,” which “means drugs, biological products, medical devices, materials, facilities, health supplies, services and equipment required to diagnose, mitigate or prevent the impairment of, improve, treat, cure, or restore the physical or mental health conditions of the population.”
Secretary of Transportation will have authority over “all forms of civil transportation,” meaning "direction, control, and coordination of civil transportation capacity regardless of ownership.”
The Secretary of Defense, besides the military, also gets control over “water resources” which “means all usable water, from all sources, within the jurisdiction of the United States, that can be managed, controlled, and allocated to meet emergency requirements.”
The Secretary of Commerce will control “all other materials, services, and facilities, including construction materials.”
