US Running on Myths, Lies, Deceptions and Distractions
Republican Hypocrisy; Democratic Complicity; The Press’s Malfeasance; and Why You Don’t Have a Job and if You Do, Why it Doesn’t Pay Squat
The United States is headed for a plutocratic dystopia where a few gated communities sit like islands amidst a sea of bitterness, misery, and want.
Why?
Because the country is running on lies, myths, deceptions and distractions. Not surprisingly, they aren’t working very well for us.
Let’s run through a few of the most destructive lies and myths.
- Corporations and the uber rich are the job creators: Uh, no. Corporations are sitting on over $2 trillion dollars in un-invested profits. What jobs they are creating are in China and other countries – which, by the way, engaged in huge government funded stimulus programs when the Great Recession first hit. Which brings us to our next myth...
- Government can’t create jobs: This particular whopper is just plain counterfactual. Obama’s much maligned stimulus program created some 3 million jobs and would have created more if he hadn’t caved to Republicans and limited its size and agreed to put 40% of it into unproductive tax cuts. In short, government does create jobs – no one else can or will when there’s not enough consumer demand to justify corporate expansion. And as long as the middle class’s wealth is getting siphoned off by the 1%, there will not be enough demand.
- The deficit is our main problem, therefore we need an austerity budget: The story line from deficit hawks is that a deficit will spook bond markets and make it difficult for the US to borrow. But that hasn’t happened. In fact, demand is so high for our bonds, we’re able to borrow at record low interest rates. And while folks are practically lining up to buy our debt instruments, they’re eschewing investments in countries which instituted austerity plans. Yet the Obama Administration continues to join with the Republicans in insane hand wringing over deficits. Yes, we must bring down the deficit eventually, but not in the midst of a jobs crisis. In the long term, there are two ways to cut the deficit: grow our way out of it, or cut spending to the bone, and face a stagnating economy for the foreseeable future. If we’re to avoid the latter, right now we need government investment to stimulate growth.
- Republicans actually care about deficits: Let’s put a stake in the heart of this one right now. Reagan and the two Bushes created more than 66% of the country's debt -- an amount equal to more than twice as much as all other President's combined (including Obama). Did you hear any complaints while this record breaking debt was being wracked up? Not a word. Clinton, it’s worth remembering, had a surplus.
- Republicans favor small government: In fact, the size of government exploded under Reagan and Bush II, and we didn’t hear a peep out of Republicans. In the last thirty years, only Clinton reduced the size of government significantly, and he did so while declaring “the era of big government” to be over. What they really favor is weak government, which brings us to …
- Regulations stifle the economy; deregulation unleashes economic growth: The fact is, laissez-faire, free market policies have failed miserably every time they’ve been tried. They have a nasty habit of causing grotesque income inequalities, huge market volatility and severe financial collapses. In fact, the Great Recession we are now climbing out of should have been strike 3 for the Free Marketeers. Strike 1 was the Panic of 1893 and the depression which followed it. Strike 2 was the Great Depression of the 30’s. In all three cases, these collapses were preceded by conservative, laissez-faire policies featuring deregulation, low taxes and weak governments.
Three tries – each resulting in severe income inequality and the catastrophic economic meltdowns they inevitably cause. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out this strategy doesn’t work.
- Climate Change is “just a theory” and we can’t afford to address it: Leaving aside the fact that in the pantheon of science, “theories” are reserved for issues that are about as certain as the scientific method allows, the scientific consensus on global warming is as strong as it gets. And we know that the costs of not acting to prevent it are going to be far more than the cost of taking action, and it goes up with each year we delay. Thanks to Republican denial, Democratic complicity and press malfeasance, we’re literally sleepwalking into the worst catastrophe the human race has ever faced.
- Republicans want to protect your freedom. Except when they want to tell you who you can sleep with, who you can marry, whether or not you can use birth control; when and whether you can choose to die; or when they want to tap your phone or detain you without due process, of course.
So why is it that these myths and lies – so easily disproven – persist. Indeed, why have they become conventional wisdom for many Americans, and why do they shape the national debate?
Here’s where the Democrats, distractions and the press’s malfeasance comes in.
Republicans throw up a lot of flack to keep people from focusing on the fact that they’re basically getting screwed by the 1%. Red meat issues like gay marriage, abortion and contraception, family values, and immigration do their part. Bald-faced lies like “Obama apologizes for America,” or he was born in Kenya contribute as well. But it only works because Democrats are too wimpy – or too complicit – to confront this bait-and-switch bullshit.
It doesn’t help that Democrats are feeding at the same corporate trough. No doubt that explains why they act like the class cowards and cringe in the last stall in the bathroom every time one of these faux issues get raised.
But the real culprit is the press – they’ve simply abrogated their responsibility to give people accurate, truthful information. Several weeks ago, New York Times “reader’s representative” Andy Brisbane actually asked readers whether reporters should be concerned with the truth. Honestly. He did.
We are now stuck with a media that puts “balance” or “objectivity” before truth. As Eric Sevareid said:
“Our rigid formulae of so-called objectivity … have given the lie the same prominence and impact that truth is given; they have elevated the influence of fools to that of wise men; the ignorant to the level of the learned; the evil to the level of the good.”
This is more true today than it was then. And without a press devoted to honesty and accuracy, our ship of state runs on yarns, myths and the modern day equivalent of “bread and circuses,” and we are at the mercy of the evil, the foolish and the ignorant.
As long as that’s the case, the whims of the 1% will rule and your pay will continue to erode, or your job will exported to China or India or Honduras or anywhere the plutocrats are free to exploit workers and the environment. Or to places like Germany, where they don’t buy into the myths, and an active government role assures high-wage jobs and general prosperity.
At the end of the day, trying to run a country according to the rules of fantasy island isn’t a recipe for success. But it does serve the interests of the 1%.

Show AllI imagine the US will be a cross between "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Metropolis" a few years from now.
"a few years from now" ?
Substitute MONTHS. Obama is a one term wonder, a sop thrown to the masses by the Elite. It's going to be Romney or Santorum next November.
And then the Tea Bag Taliban will really get going.
This seems unlikely. Nobody much likes Mr. Moneybags and with Santorum calling for cuts to SS immediately and bad-mouthing birth control, this character is way too out of touch to lead the nation.
So was Bush II. Your point?
As I recall, in 2000, Bush II campaigned as a moderate and his platform was actually to the left of Gore on some issues.
If Gore were allowed to be president, we would not have gone to war - right there we would have saved 1 trillion.
HE LIED!
AS YOU RECALL??? increase your intake of B vitamins!!!!
Any number of potential black swans could undo the Obama admin - a spike in layoffs and people will vote for the 'other guy' no matter wacky he is....
$5 gas a gal would also sink Obama in my opinion......
Maybe a nice scandal popping up at the right time......
Obama has a good chance of being reelected but it's not a given by any means......
mtdon -
I agree with you on the potential black swans. Getting sucked into another war (this time against Iran) will give you your $5 per gallon gas instantly, probably near $10 a gallon courtesy of Persian Gulf production disruption and the international petro price speculators by the time the ballots get counted in November, 2012. And remember, roughly one half of the states now have Republican-controlled executive branch flacks legally charged with doing the vote tabulating. Lotsa pond water there for the swans to paddle around in.
A nice scandal? How about a really evil, really, really vile, and totally manufactured scandal - an orchestrated Swift Boat-style smear campaign blowing completely unexpected out of right field some time in late October, hammered incessantly on the mainstream US media by some of those faceless, billionaire-funded SuperPACs vigorously exercising their Citizens United corporate free speech rights.
What sort of a scandal might that be? The more explosive, outrageously false and socially divisive, the better.
So I bet on sex. Barack the first family family man, suddenly saddled with accusations of multiple deviant marital infidelities that would make Tiger Woods blush.
We just report. You decide. Trick or treat.
Bill from Saginaw
Sorry, mtdon, I have to agree with all the disagreers......Obama is the PERFECT president for both teams. His democratic friends in Washington and the surprisingly large number of seemingly reluctant Obama-ship mutineers will return for more hope and vote for him, again. There are a lot of folks on all sides of the game that will benefit from another Obama term, so they'll also do what they can to keep him in....even as they pretend to hate him.
The republicans, despite their loud moaning, blaming, attacks and calls for Obama's head, have to be loving him. THEY can get just about EVERYTHING they have ever wanted AND repeat their lies enough about the mess being his fault, not theirs, that it is actually believed by the TV-misinformed masses. What a deal! They can be as evil, oppressive, elitist, warmongering and hateful as they want...blame it on Obama's failed policy or action. An almost perfect win-win......for ALL of them. Even the president (and temporary scapegoat) being blamed and castigated from all sides. And know that I am in no way excluding the democrats or other parties from equal responsibility in the ruination of our country...and a good chunk of the rest of the world.
They ALL get pretty much what they want. The man (or woman) who aspires to be president gets one or two terms in the spotlight, wining and dining, living in absolute luxury with their every need and want being catered to, being adored and hated....almost a decade for a two-term presidential family living like and actually mingling with kings and queens and heads-of-state around the globe, solicited by schools, clubs, TV show hosts and other adoring groups who want a camera moment with the American royals. They have access to one of the grandest private jets in existence, food lovingly prepared by the best chefs in the world (don't be fooled by the down-to-earth prez who makes the good-for-the-image show of going to a BBQ place for take-out or pops in for a beer with the locals), the children attend the best private schools money buys.....the list could go on of perks the president and first lady, our king and queen, revel in during their stay in The Washington Palace.
Now, I'm sure the trials, tribulations and actual presidential business that has to at least visibly be taking place and the daily stress of pulling off the charade that you actually ARE the top dog of the free world, Commander-in-Chief of the Slightly-Divided Empire of America, with enormous responsibilities for securing and preserving freedom for ALL (that are properly connected) take their toll. I mean, have you ever seen a president that didn't have almost totally while hair by the time he reaches his library-building, lecture-circuit days...no matter what color it was just before entering office?
And each president must come into his faux power knowing that there are those out there (maybe even or especially from within one's own circle of cronies) who would toss him out, ANY way they could if he is not keeping the right people happy and prosperous...which could be one of the biggest contributors to the graying that takes place literally before our eyes. That and the constant lying.
As far as the vultures on the other side of the aisle? They totally get what they want, as I said....and somehow manage to look less bad in their evil.
And the real movers and shakers behind the scenes? They are the ones really making out like bandits...also, literally. While the political theater is in full dysfunction and the masses are diverted by the manufactured follies coming out of both Washington and Hollywood and the complicit media outlets the first two mostly own, they are sitting back watching the show and smugly, arrogantly, deviously plotting their next oppressive, wealth-shifting domestic and foreign policies that their president, just returned from golf and other get-away stress relief, will poignantly and authoritatively strive to accomplish. The Washington theater will go into full production and present the usual fanfare, the bantering and bickering, the bartering and rewriting...the show they are so well-paid to present to us will be on. And the hidden agendas with be fulfilled
And everyone is happy.
Well.....not everyone.
Fed Up: I think you painted an accurate portait. Good post.
Thanks, Siouxrose....I'd like to think none of the more distressing future scenerios thoughtfully considered and talked about here are accurate. On a brighter note, while on another thread I was clued in on how to easily access your e-books...at a crazily affordable price that is well within my budget! I'm looking forward to reading the more in-depth thoughts you have on things.
Obama may be the perfect republican president but that doesn't mean the corporate predators won't donate to the rethug candidate - in fact I argue that they willl give More to the republican -
That way if a Black Swan event occurs Obama loses and the monied elite get to elect their rethug candidate -
But they will also play Obama by saying 'what have you done for me today' 'how bad do you want campaign funds?' - further driving Obama to the right.....
Besides the House very likely will stay rethug and there's a dang good chance the senate goes rethug -
So the 1% play both Sides off each other winning, whether the dems win or lose - nothing surprising there....
My mainpont is Obama is NOT guaranteed victory no matter how much he does the bidding of the oligarchs.
Time will tell.
Total agreement.
WHY........NOT.........!!!!!!! some DIM with wattage to challenge the Dear Leader in a primary............AHM only a dreamer who once fantasized.......where was the etheral Russ Feingold .....when we thought we needed him!!!..........now, also a SELLOUT!!!!!
The O could possibly be the last, "nominally" elected prez of the USA. Be looking for federally appointed "Emergency Managers" of the North American Continental Districts in future.
I can definitely see either of those scenarios unfolding...:-(
I disagree. Obama's service to the 1% has been invaluable.
.
He's loaded his administration with wall street and corporate execs, he's reinforced and increased the powers of the imperial presidency, continued the ongoing rape of the bill of rights, kept us engaged in wars of aggression and empire abroad, while overseeing the growing militarization of the police/surveillance state here in the "homeland."
.
He's given huge tax cuts to the rich ... and followed that up a few weeks later by pushing a budget that cut over a trillion dollars, mostly from programs that assist the poor and middle classes. He's even made real inroads towards destroying social security and medicare .. something that no republican has come close to achieving. He has stated that we should be ready to sacrifice our own sacred cows if we expect the rich to pay just a few meager percentage points more in taxes. He said that would be a "fair and balanced" deal.
.
Heck, he has even moved the supreme court to the political right of where it was when he took office!
.
The 1% are going to give him a billion dollars to run in 2012 ... Obama will not lose.
Good summation. I believe the Republican race, covered to death by the mainstream media, is just an irrelevant sideshow, deliberately staged to distract us from just the points you mention.
And the same 1% will also give a billion to whoever Obama's Republican opponent is, hedging their bets. Heads they win, tails we lose.
Bill from Saginaw
Obama might lose because he's an inept politican. Joe Lieberman stabbed him in the back by campaigning for John McCain and did not suffer at all for his treachery. Lieberman should have been stripped of all his seniority and his desk should have been moved to the Capitol lawn. Whenever there is a conflict or battle with the Republicans he surrenders with nary a fight. What Obama has going for him is incredible luck which trumps ability every time. The 1% gets 95% of what it wants from Obama. A Republican administration would deliver 100%. Is 5% worth voting for Obama?. Vote third party!
Eagle Bill-
"Obama might lose because he's an inept politican". Two things that History will record and it will be History's job to reveal it. Mr. Obama will be recognized as a politician without peer. Mr. Obama will be saluted for having a "steady hand".
Has any politician in modern times so completely nullified his opposition? The Republicans have no issues upon which to run. National Defense? Nope, Taxes? Nope, Big Government? Nope and so they scurry around and scurry around, aimlessly.
Give Mr. Obama a little time, If he lives, he might surprise you by being the President he promised you.
"The repubs have no issues upon which to run."
.
I remember listening to Thom Hartmann a few years ago talking about O's policy that would allow oil drilling along parts of the east coast where it had been banned ....This took place three weeks before the BP blowout in the Gulf ... O claimed that ocean based oil drilling was a safe technology that would allow us to become more energy independent.
.
Hartmann's analysis of O's policy was something to the effect of; "well good, this is a brilliant political move that will undermine the republicans position."
.
Undermine the republican's position by adopting it.... brilliant! Can't let Sarah Paylun have a monopoly on "drill baby drill!"
Franciszek2
If you don't like politics, you just don't like politics. Politics is the heart of a Democracy. Politics replaces guns.
"Politics is the heart of a democracy. Politics replaces guns."
.
Gee, that's a nice platitude. Someone should let Obama the political mastermind know that he doesn't need men with guns to project American power around the world anymore... and he doesn't need men with guns to suppress citizens here in the "homeland" who have the audacity to actually use their 1st amendment rights. After all ... since Obama is a political mastermind, he doesn't need men with guns.
.
But you are right about one thing ... O does have a very steady hand. He's hardly deviated from the Bush II playbook and status quo at all.
.
So Barack adopts and expands Jr Bush's and Sarah Paylun's policies, pretty much across the board - from foreign policy, to "homeland" security, from tax cuts for the rich, to the destruction of the middle claas .... and you applaud him for his "steady hand" and celebrate his status as a politician without peer? Have I characterized that accurately?
Franciszek2
Yes, you have and consider the results, against all the odds. The wars are winding down, Israel is put into check against Iran, the economy is heading in the right direction, at last. And another thing, the economy, he took office with the financial system in shambles, and the economic infrastructure gutted. Manufacturing sectors are growing, Walmart's cutting prices at the sacrifice of profits, (ain't that something), the goals of OWS have been rhetorically accomodated and yes Hope still lives, No guns, yet. Platitudes are what they are because they hold within them, abiding Truth.
"the wars are winding down" ... or not. Violence was up in A-stan by 40% in 2011 despite (or probably because of) Obama's 2009 "surge." Just last week Nato blew up eight Afghan children, some as young as six, who were herding sheep and collecting wood ... Nato apologized later in the week .. but said that they thought the children were "adult sized Afghans, atheletic and strong"" who posed an imminent threat to nearby troops ... recently Obama has been trying to soften his own 2014 deadline for withdrawing troops from A-stan.
.
O wanted to leave 10's of thousands of troops in Iraq .. but couldn't reach an agreement with the Iraqi's on immunity for the troops .. and he was forced to pull them all out. However, at least a division sized contingent of private "contractors" will remain to protect the US embassy in Iraq and maintain a permanent American "security presence" there.
.
As for the economy ... I agree, things are great.... on Wall Street. The Street obviously has major confidence in O. In fact, the dow just crossed 13,000 today for the first time in 4 years. Good for O ... pumping up the Street's tires like that. I'm sure a little quid quo pro is in order. There's no way that O's campaign will ever rake in a billion dollars without the Street having his back his back.
.
Ask the average working man how the economy is doing for him .... my guess would be "not too well."
You've hit the nail on the head. I believe it has already been decided by the 1% that O will have a second term. During his second they may get a law change that removes presidential term limits.
He is their man and they plan to keep him. A republican president with a democratic house and senate would not have gotten the Bush tax cuts extended. O did so with a flare. The democratic house and senate would never have passed ObumerCare with a republican president. A republican president would never have gotten away with the establishment of a Super Committee whose whole intention was to end Social Security and Medicare. You can thank Occupy for the rescue of the two programs but without a huge change in governance (meaning We the People arise and assert our power), those two programs will not survive a second Obumer term.
He is the 1% man and his re-election was decided some time ago. He is just too damn good to set aside. Everything listed above is always blamed upon republican obstructionism and the Obama faithful swallow it hook-line-and-sinker.
I was really angry with Ralph Nader in 2000 and 2004 as he was telling us to be careful of what you vote for. You just might get it. I got what I voted for in 2008 and by 2009 I knew that Nader had, once again, been ahead of his time.
Galen,
"Obama is a one term wonder.."
I strongly disagree. He will be a two term wonder.....The current President has been the gift that just keeps giving....Best right winger the corporate elites have owned in years..
Thomas Gilbert-
Christian fundamentalists, when they get enough power, behave very much like their Muslim counterparts. Rick Santorum is honest enough to admit that he wants to outlaw contraception (because the Catholic Church opposes it). All the Republican candidates are "anti-abortion". Being "pro-life" is something entirely different. Being "pro-life" means supporting human life from birth to death, or from womb to tomb if you will. That means supporting national health insurance for all. You won't find any Republican willing to support that. They are all "pro-death" in their attitude that if you can't afford health care, then you should die just as soon as possible...
You forget, it will be a brokered convention this year and there is a real possibility (probability?) that Jeb Bush will be the nominee. Then we will have our dynasty that the Elite and the Tea Bag Taliban really want.
Good article, but there are now so many lies being pedaled that Mr Atcheson could have written an article ten time longer than this one and probably not be able to touch on them all.
Here is my favorite new one that is being pedaled. Manufactures have lots of openings, but cant find qualified candidates for those positions. Really? Seriously? Lets see, Apple builds some of the most high tech devices out there, and they do it in China using unskilled peasants that migrate into the cities from the rural country side.
These companies supposedly have a demand for their product, and they will not bother to spend a few bucks to train people who have lost jobs in other areas of manufacturing who have lost their jobs through outsourcing. Seriously? Sorry but I am NOT buying that they can't find people when there are TENS of MILLIONS of people out of work, and desperate for a job.
My only question is where the 1% REALLY want to take this country? Is there some overall plan, or is this just the result of greed unleashed? Tom Hartman was saying TPTB want to take the country to Neo-feudalisic system. Im not how a modern economy can function under that type of system, but then maybe TPTB simply don't give a shit if it can or not.
tom - don't get me started on apple
we look at the rockefellers and carnegies and fords of the past and we recognize they were robber barons who treated their workers like chattel but we don't see the modern day slimeballs - like steve jobs - who are in fact a lot more offensive when it comes to treating their employees like disposable trash
suicide nets ring their factories because a lot of their workers kill themselves by throwing themselves off the roof of factories
"The main point of performer Mike Daisey’s powerful one-man show about Apple and its Chinese factories is that in China, it’s cheaper to have people make products rather than have machines make those products. As a result, people are treated like machines. They perform the same tasks, day in, day out. They work excessively long hours and if they break down, they are discarded. Most tellingly, if they try to commit suicide, the factory puts up big nets around its buildings to catch them. Nothing about the work or the workplace is changed."
http://www.cultofmac.com/81964/apple-touts-suicide-nets-in-supplier-responsibility-report-but-changes-little/
they use child labor
"Child slave labor is mostly considered being used for the production of clothes, toys, and athletic equipment. Apple, one of the largest brands of electronics today, produces the popular iPhone, iPod, and numerous types of computers. In its production however, Apple admits to using child slave labor to support the popular demands of the company’s products. "

a lot of workers are killed in their factories because safety is not a concern
"In China, Human Costs Are Built Into an iPad
By CHARLES DUHIGG and DAVID BARBOZA
The explosion ripped through Building A5 on a Friday evening last May, an eruption of fire and noise that twisted metal pipes as if they were discarded straws.
When workers in the cafeteria ran outside, they saw black smoke pouring from shattered windows. It came from the area where employees polished thousands of iPad cases a day.
Two people were killed immediately, and over a dozen others hurt. As the injured were rushed into ambulances, one in particular stood out. His features had been smeared by the blast, scrubbed by heat and violence until a mat of red and black had replaced his mouth and nose. "

more deaths
"Wintek, who supplies touchscreen components to Apple for the iPhone and iPod touch, just got "exposed" for "hazardous work conditions." One of the most severe conditions? N-hexane poisoning, which the company illegally used instead of alcohol to clean screens.
In August of 2009, 49 people were treated for N-hexane poisoning, with one dead. The BoingBoing post says that the worker died this weekend, so it seems like Wintek continued to use N-hexane even after they were punished from last year"
http://gizmodo.com/5477506/worker-dies-from-n+hexane-poisoning-at-touchscreen-factory-that-also-makes-apples-screens
steve jobs and apple would leave the worst of the robber barons shaking their heads in disbelief
last year they earned 13 bucks a share but they still do not pay dividends
that's what i call a commitment to the community boy
Yes it is cheaper to use people then machines to build many products in places like China.
At the same time this cost saving is at risk if the people are not OBEDIENT and refuse to take direction. A Machine will always follow orders.
Thus in the infinite wisdom of the "Owner Class" the problem with the Western Nations is the people have too many freedoms and will not take orders like those in China will.
The solution is erosion of Civil Liberties (using some fabricated war on terror), the cutting of support for Social Programs (That allow a degree of freedom and independence from the necessity of labor) , the lowering of wages (Making a person ever more reliant on his or her job to earn the barest necessities of life), the privatization of the commons (to ensure there absolutely NO sources of sustenance all must be paid for with ones labor) and laws passed to prohibit or limit the workers ability to resist (Anti Union legislation and the meme that it UNIONS that are causing the nations ills).
The goal is what some that follow the nonsense of a Ayn Rand claim a "free" choice offerred to the people. Yoo will either LABOR for as on terms WE dictate or you will die.
Here here GwNorth!!!! I concur with your post.
Why are people not boycotting Apple products?
"Why are people not boycotting Apple products?"

Because they're just too damn COOL!*
* Disclaimer: not in my personal opinion, though.
I'm not much for bumper stickers, but I do have one that says, "Boycott Cool".
Cool is a great, adamantine barrier to radical action, a wall constructed by the smug bourgeoisie to protect its position in society without the honesty to say so.
Cool could kill us...literally.
Thanks for the great idea. I just ordered a custom "Boycott Cool" button from makepins.com, 5 bucks. I spend time each week walking around a college campus, and those are hotbeds of cool.
That's a good question. But I should tell you what my friend told me after he was issued an iPad from his employer: "They give us these things to keep us from rioting!"
The herd has spoken: the whole IT industry is promoted by the state because it keeps us on our fannies, convinced we are doing something 'important'.
I can vaguely remember once doing stuff unmediated by gadgets, though-- and I do remember liking it.
Tuscany,
I am not in a position to answer because I am responding to your comment/question on an ipad.

The United States is so wrapped up in its own religious imbecility and its gigantic military force fighting racist wars agianst the third world that makes them feel so superior they haven't noticed that they are going under.
With regard to the role of the media, in addition to quoting Eric Sevareid, he might have mentioned a comment Edward R. Murrow once made: "To the media, the opinions of Judas and Jesus are of equal value."
Not so simple. The fair and balanced explanation does not always hold. The claims of Chavez vs the US and the Iran comments vs US comments are not treated equally at all. The media is also a team player and it does not fail the public because it is incompetent or fearful, but because it is complicit, owned, and used to manipulate public opinion.
Some stuff is just disseminated to create plausible deniability.
elm
Actually, these are the top myths, lies, deceptions and distractions running the USA:
1. "America" is superior to every other nation.
2. Christianity is superior to every other religion.
3. "White" is the superior "race".
4. Capitalism is the superior political ideology.
5. Men are superior to women.
6. Homo sapiens is superior to every other species.
The rest is ugly details.
That is a damn good list. These are the big messages from our propaganda. Of course it does not cover motives or means. It is so good you get the feeling that it is orthogonal and axiomatic. Perhaps if you distil the propaganda on any issue and boil and distil it some more, this is what you end out with, and hence your claim "The rest is ugly details.".
I am still not yet 100% sure, though. I am going to pin this list up, and see if it holds true over time. Perhaps there are a few more big ones.
Bigotry and discrimination can take just about any form. If you think of any other big ones, please post them. Thanks for your thoughts, braithwa842 :)
My list includes the beginning.
0. The United States of America still exists - it did not
die in December 2008, and all democracy die with it.
