Unseizing Gaza
Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister says Blockade of Gaza Was a “Mistake and Not Effective”
In an interview with National Public Radio aired on August 30, 2010, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said that the three-year blockade on most foodstuffs and other materials was "a mistake" and that "denying different items or products into Gaza was not effective."
For three years, Israel and Egypt, supported by the United States and the European Union, have restricted travel and trade and have allowed only the most basic humanitarian aid into Gaza as collective punishment for the Palestinians of Gaza electing Hamas as their government. The purpose of the siege, blockade, quarantine of Gaza is to put pressure on the people to overthrow the government of Hamas.
But, sieges and sanctions seldom effect the change that other governments want. Instead, the sanctions make life miserable for the average citizen while the political elite live their lives with little impact. The United States has had a 50 year blockade on Cuba to get the people of Cuba to revolt against Fidel Castro and the revolution-and it didn't work. The ten years of sanctions on the people of Iraq didn't result in their taking up arms against Saddam Hussein's regime. And the ever increasing sanctions on the people of Iran are doomed to fail in the same way-they are all "ineffective" for the purposes for which they were created-putting such economic, medical and daily food pressure on civilians that they will take up weapons against their own heavily armed military force.
I went to Gaza three times in 2009 and after each trip tried to get our United States government to respond to the extreme conditions caused by the blockade which were greatly deepened by the December 2008-January 2009 Israeli pounding of Gaza that killed 1440, wounded 5000 and left 50,000 homeless and most water and sewage infrastructure in rubble and most industries destroyed. Israel said its actions were to stop the thousands of homemade unguided rockets from Gaza that have killed 30 Israeli citizens in six years. However, the disproportionate use of force on Gaza by the most sophisticated, high-tech military in the region that receives $3 billion in military aid from the United States each year, elicited condemnation from human rights groups, but little from governments.
The partial lifting of the blockade came because of another Israeli disproportionate use of force, this time on the passengers of the May 2010 Gaza flotilla. It took the Israeli killing nine persons and wounding 50 others and the resulting outrage of citizens of the world that forced their governments finally to strongly condemn Israel's actions and demand that Israel to end its blockade.
Tragically, it was not the long history of deaths of Palestinians during the siege (particularly 1440 killed in 22 days) that brought pressure on the Israelis to change their policies, but the deaths of internationals on the flotilla.
Ayalon commented that the Gaza flotilla "expedited" the decision to ease the blockage but that he believes "the decision would have come up anyway," and added, "Action like a flotilla certainly is trying to put Israel in a no-win situation."
Tens of thousands of citizens from all over the world are funding ships for the second flotilla (www.freegaza.org), including a ship to represent the citizens of the United States (www.ustogaza.org).
As a survivor of the Gaza flotilla, I can assure Deputy Foreign Minister Ayalon that there will be a second flotilla to continue to pressure the Israeli government to totally end the blockade of Gaza and break down the walls to the open air prison called Gaza.
It will be a win for the people of Gaza and for us all.

Show AllAnn Wright and Elizabeth Warren for president - 2012, if not sooner!
Ann Wright is a global heroine. I wholeheartedly support her efforts.
For the past several years, the impoverished, innocent Palestinians have suffered under the building of luxurious resorts and well-stocked markets for the past several years, all under the harsh yoke of Jewish oppression. Fortunately, their equal-rights-loving leaders, Hamas, who respect women, homosexuals, other religions, and Democracy as much as the readers of this site, fortunately Hamas has poured everything into improving the lives of Palestinians. They never used the blockade as an opportunity to enrich themselves or entrench a totalitarian religious regime.
Hey, everybody! It's bikini party time in Gaza. Bring your rainbow flags.
Well, if it ain't our latest Israeli troll. I won't even try to comment on the diarrhea that you just posted. However, having read another one of your paid dribbles, I've picked up on a typical Israeli psychotic trait: you start off with what seems like a sympathetic comment towards the Palestinians and half way thru and without any warning, go fool fleshed into an offensive and one of the most idiotic ones that I've seen from a troll too. I most certainly hope that the Israeli Foreign Ministry is only paying you minimum wage, I'd hate to see my American tax dollars going to waste on someone as utterly incompetent at trolling as you.
Thank you, friend, for ignoring Hamas's evil ways. As long as we ignore the evils of Hamas, we can support them wholeheartedly. And with that in mind, I so admire the tremendous freedoms enjoyed by all under Hamas's rule. Allah akbar!
ZIONISM is the CURSE of the planet.
Jews have become what they once fought.
Thanks yachtie.
Short, sweet, to the point.
Whoa, Wayout... it is NOT short and sweet. It lumps ALL Jews into a single category. That's just? Fair? On the mark? Some great minds AND peacemakers happen to be Jews.
Just as you and I have slim to no impact on our nation's brutal policies, Jews of conscience have slim to none over Israel's.
There are many interests that fuel the make-war states. Placing all of them under the rubric of religion, ANY religion, is a false construct.
Today's fundamentalist Christians are being programmed to expect and anticipate another Crusades/holy war. Yet there are certainly Christians of conscience who follow (or try to follow) the peace-oriented teachings of Jesus.
A FEW Muslims resort to violence... but given the attacks on their nations, it's a wonder more are not acting out this way.
And yes, some Israeli Jews also advocate for violence and the senseless oppression of others, primarily in Palestine.
Let's get some balance and reason operating here, shall we?
It's pretty scary when intelligent voices on the left increasingly blame Israel for U.S. foreign policy. I see a pattern being established that will likely set Israel up to take the fall, or blame... when enough treaties are broken, lands ruined, human beings "liberated" to their untimely deaths.
.
The blocked is not a "mistake," it's a CRIME.
Ann Wright has never spoken about her awakening from her days in the military. I wonder how she feels knowing that she was an integral part of the imperial killing machine for so many years. I'd like to know how she came about her realization regarding the Palestinians too. I'm sure there's an interesting story in there.
Most reverends preach redemption. Are you a hypocrite, or a troll?
REVEREND: It would appear by her commitment to social justice today that she's faced that fearless moral reckoning. Now that she applies her time & energy to significant causes... I would say she's making up for any past sins. Wouldn't you? I would not be surprised if some courageous film-maker elected to do her story. I think we all would be LIFTED by it.
There's a parallel drawn from the lesson of The Prodigal Son in that there's something quite precious and holy about an individual who abandons a life based on harm (to self or others) to embrace an entirely new, more holistic vision. She is a modern "Exhibit A" of that very fact of spiritual evolution.
The Gazans had an election. They chose, of their own free will, to put the ultra-conservative Islamist Hamas organization in power.
The knew when they voted that Hamas is dedicated to the destruction of Israel and maintaining a state of constant war until that goal is achieved.
So what's the issue? The people of Gaza are getting just what they asked for.
Israel's defenders always assert that Hamas is "dedicated to the destruction" of Israel. Does it not occur to you that Israel has destroyed Palestine and continues this destruction day by day cutting farms and villages to pieces with concrete walls and jewish only roads.
Israel is destroying Palestine and the people of Palestine, once a small nation of farmers, Israeli's have stolen their farms and homes. They lock them in Israeli controlled ghettos where they deny them work by banning exports, bombing their factories. Witness the bulldozing of Palestinian homes and the theft of their water to build jewish only villages and tell us that Israel is not dedicated to the destruction of Palestine and the Palestinians.
