Hatred as a Political Strategy
Newt Gringrich hit a nerve. No, wait. He hit nerves no one wants to talk about.
In an interview this week with the Washington Post, the former speaker of the House who led the charge to slash social programs during the Clinton presidency, said President Obama and the Democrats would regret pushing to pass the health care bill. Gingrich called the bill "the most radical social experiment . . . in modern times,'' so radical that Obama and the Democrats "will have destroyed their party much as Lyndon Johnson shattered the Democratic Party for 40 years.''
The Post said the quote referred to civil rights bills enacted under Johnson. Gingrich said that was not what he meant. In a correction, the Post wrote, "Gingrich said he was referring not to the civil rights legislation but to Johnson overreaching on his management of the economy, the Vietnam War and the cultural divisions that emerged partly because of that war. Gingrich said Johnson erred on civil rights by supporting busing to integrate schools and by failing to take a firmer stance against racial violence in urban areas.''
By clarifying, Gingrich helps us get why health care became the most divisive social-program debate since Gingrich's successful attack on welfare in the 1990s, an attack that had racial overtones. Health care is breaking the backs of millions of families of all colors, but the Republicans chose to gin up the masses with unbridled fear, with House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio declaring the vote "Armageddon.''
It was Armageddon all right, a battle between selfishness and sharing. Some Americans who believe health care reform represents a heist of "their'' resources for the undeserving betrayed their underlying feelings as Democratic congressmen were either called the N word or spat upon, a Latino congressman was called a "wetback,'' and Massachusetts Representative Barney Frank, who is gay, was called the F word.
No Republican had the courage to remind the rabid that America, at other great crossroads, did put government into their lives. The wealth of countless white middle class families today stems from World War II veteran housing bills that too often, we conveniently forget, discriminated against black veterans along with housing segregation. Surely, more than one tea partier has Medicare or uses a VA hospital. Yet most Republicans do anything they can to deflect responsibility for the frenzy.
None is more representative than Gingrich who, after saying there was of course no place for such behavior, told the Journal-Constitution, "I think the Democratic leadership has to take some real responsibility (for choosing) to use corrupt tactics that bought votes, that bullied people and as a result has enraged much of the American people.''
Some things just add up. The vast majority of tea partiers, at least from all the photos, are white and the nearly all-white Republican congressional delegation stood as a brick wall against reform. The rage around health care, going back to the disruptions of Democratic legislator town halls last summer, continues to raise the temperature not just on health care, but on the dangerous debate on who is a "true blue'' American.
One cannot forget how, in a last gasp before Obama's election, Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said of Obama, "I am just so fearful that this is not a man who sees America as you and I do.'' One cannot forget the level of disrespect shown to Obama in the "You lie!'' outburst by South Carolina Republican Representative Joe Wilson. Wilson has been rewarded for his outburst with the most campaign contributions of anyone in the House, $3.4 million in the 2010 election cycle.
In the final stages of the health care debate, Palin and other Republican leaders resorted to telling their masses to "reload'' or get ready for the "firing line'' in November. Republican Congressman Randy Neugebauer had to apologize for shouting "baby killer'' when anti-abortion Democrat Bart Stupak of Michigan gave his support for the health care bill. The Republicans need to find someone with courage to disarm the rhetoric, before someone reloads for real.

Show AllThe hatred is born out of the fear that has been pounded into the American people for last 8 years. Fear will drive people to do things that they would not normally even consider.
While I agree with the general gist of the article, one aspect dismayed me. Whats with the use of the euphemisms"N word" and "F" word and "wetbacks". Whyis "wetback" allowed while N and F are used. Why not the W word.It sounds like we're a bunch of six year olds talking about wee wee and poo poo. The first use of euphemisms, as George Carlin observed, is to obscure or deceive. If you want to say it, say it. NIGGER FAGGOT Now shoot me!
I've often commented about a relative who returned to the US for a visit in the early '90s after moving to France, and was flabbergasted to hear a local radio report about a home being vandalized using "N-word" references to describe graffiti spray-painted on the premises.
He assumed that the newsreader was somehow flummoxed into feeling that he would be "blamed" if he used "nigger" descriptively.
I explained that sadly, this infantilization was no fluke, but now standard usage in dumbed-down Amerika-- an unintended toxic side-effect of identity politics.
Ironically, speaking of "infantilization", this "*-word" euphemism is exactly on a par with Amerika's neurotic nipplephobia. Whoops! There's another "n-word"!
just a bunch of a-holes!
This is clearly a fight to keep America white and to make sure the government only caters to them and the least possible to "blacks and minorities".
With the election of a black American for president many whites feel they're losing control of "their" country and are now doing anything possible to disrupt Obama's presidency.
This is plain and simple a racist war and as such is bound to get worse. Much worse.
As attacks increase in severity people at first might be shocked at them but sooner than later the teabaggers and their strategic allies will overcome any apprehension they might have about hurting "lesser' Americans and go all out for it.
Well if it's not good old Helter Skelter.
Don't you think your rhetoric is a bit extreme?
I think Charlie Manson liked to prattle on about a race war too.
Racism is part of the current US domestic political struggle but it is by no means all of it.
Calling it a "racist war" demonizes all Obama critics.
If the teabaggers are so violent, then why is no one dead or even seriously injured in this "racist war."
If you would like to see a racist war, why not go to Afghanistan, Iraq or Israel. There are real dead people there and there are real "racist wars."
Touché.
Nothing to see here, move along.....
I think you will find these groups are all "tea baggers" at heart. Possibly funded by the same people.
"They're back. Almost a decade after largely disappearing from public view, right-wing militias, ideologically driven tax defiers and sovereign citizens are appearing in large numbers around the country. "Paper terrorism" — the use of property liens and citizens' "courts" to harass enemies — is on the rise. And once-popular militia conspiracy theories are making the rounds again, this time accompanied by nativist theories about secret Mexican plans to "reconquer" the American Southwest. One law enforcement agency has found 50 new militia training groups — one of them made up of present and former police officers and soldiers. Authorities around the country are reporting a worrying uptick in Patriot activities and propaganda. "This is the most significant growth we've seen in 10 to 12 years," says one. "All it's lacking is a spark. I think it's only a matter of time before you see threats and violence."
A key difference this time is that the federal government — the entity that almost the entire radical right views as its primary enemy — is headed by a black man. That, coupled with high levels of non-white immigration and a decline in the percentage of whites overall in America, has helped to racialize the Patriot movement, which in the past was not primarily motivated by race hate. One result has been a remarkable rash of domestic terror incidents since the presidential campaign, most of them related to anger over the election of Barack Obama. At the same time, ostensibly mainstream politicians and media pundits have helped to spread Patriot and related propaganda, from conspiracy theories about a secret network of U.S. concentration camps to wholly unsubstantiated claims about the president's country of birth." The Southern Poverty Law Center has filed suit against the town of Homer, La., and two of its former police officers on behalf of the family of an elderly black man who was shot to death by one of the officers while standing harmlessly on his front porch.

Sorry, your examples still fall far short of "racist war."
Also, your post tends to cast President Obama as a besieged victim. Tell that to the next family whose kids are killed in a drone attack.
Let's face it; Obama's wars are killing a thousand times more brown people than any right wing Amerikans are.
Exactly, when are we going to try to save thousands of lives of people of color by starting to talk again about widespread non violent demonstrations against the MIC and endless wars which are Obummers responsibility now, since he choose not only not to end them but in fact escalated them? If this is what CD has offer then you are worse than even fucking Alex Jones who at least yelled his face off at CNN the other day about about their role in lying us into war with Iraq, which they properly deserve. Jones may be a nut case but at least he's not an arse licking nut case like CD is when it publishes articles like this. Republishing this article on the other hand is reaching out a hand towards the MSM staging incredibly destructive devisive political drama and saying "yes please may I have another?"
Fuck that!
http://www.infowars.com/alex-jones-inside-cnn-attack-piece/
Some of Jones conspiracy theories amy be questionable here, but his calling out corporate media for it's role in the run up to the Iraq war, pointing out that faux health reform was written by the insurance companies, and coming out strongly against inflaming the American people to hate each other is 100% admirable.
In this round Alex Jones 1 CD 0
Lets see if CD has the guts to not censor this or ban me, why do I have my doubts?
Well so far so good, at least CD seems to be having quite a bit more tolerance for diversity of opinion and free speech than in the past, kudos for that!
Dream on Joe Hill and poo poo to you, too! Stick with the subject of the Kristallnacht response to the passage of the healthcare bill. The continuation of war is another subject that I feel we may have more agreement that you would like to admit.
I forsee the corporations dropping their emplyoee based healthcare plans like snakes shed skin. They'd rather pay the fine than pay for coverage of their employees. (ala AT&T and Caterpillar....etc) So where are these dropped employees/retirees going to find their insurance? We'll get single payer sooner than we think.
poo poo yo you too?
Uhh, dude that's really not a very convincing argument.
I'd like to see some of the Obamabots looking in the mirror and perceiving the murderous violence that the US government is committing in all our names.
JJS, if you're going to spout off about racist war, you have to be able to square your support of Obama with his militarist policies and wars against brown people of Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Palestine and Iran.
Duh JOH-EEEE,
How does seeing that there are extreme racists gathering momentum (been down to a Tea party gathering or just the local corner Tavern?) and secessionist militias planning disruptions (read the headlines lately?) equate to being an "Obamabot"?
Do you call everyone who points out that you wrongfully associated Helter Skelter with the first comment of this sub-thread an..... OMG!!!! Obama lover. That was a tactic of the vast right wing conspirators during the Clinton years; "Clinton lover" they screamed if you questioned Newt or Rush or Reagan.
You certainly have the eyes to see what your fine neighbors are doing, ears to listen to what they are saying and the brain to comprehend what you see, hear and read. I certainly can't help ya if you just wanna turn it all off, my friend.
I can see racial tensions building, although it is not an IMMINENT race war. It is not like we are all one color-blind, Kumbaya community. Although we've made many strides at equality. Oh, don't forget the WOMEN-"DUDE"!
I do respect philistinethear...’s suggestion to watch and watch out for these hate groups. They are following precisely the path of the KKK as well as blazing their own paths in trying to win the hearts and minds of generally decent but scared uninformed or misinformed people. I mean who seriously can think Sarah Palin can explain what the hell is going on and listen to John McCain babble on and on. It is sad to see McCain clamoring just to keep his cushy Senate seat. He was once a worthy Republican opponent.
I am of the mind that self determination and incremental change is the essence of our governing system, or should be. I’d like to see the knee-jerk Obama slammers (not you Joey, oh no) realize that Obama ain’t no KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR coming to rescue us from the shit we’ve gotten ourselves into. Yes us, because we get the gov’t we deserve.
Obama can’t just wave his magic, semi-black, phallus wand and make it so. I would love to see a military withdraw (no pun intended) from the mid-east, love to see the Patriot act and the MCA rescinded. Hearings and trails for the torturers and war criminals of the previous Admin.
I’m encouraged that Hilary, the HAWK, is out there making friends, confronting heads of State and influencing people around the world. I hate that it promotes naked capitalism but it brings the world closer-WARTS AND ALL. Women have a way about them, just look at Nancy Pelosi. She's my hometown GIRL! I would love for it all to shake out MY WAY, but my ego ain’t that big. And I'm NOT the President, but even if I was, there are no guarantees.
Just keep pushing is all I can say.
There, now you have lots of my poo-poo to wallow in, go for it.
That's the first Pelosi supporter to see here. If you would ever learn to pay closer attention to the issues, you might realize just how starstruck you are. Your comment on Hillary and Pelosi shows your immaturity and bringing up race like that? Please read for a while here and then come back when you are ready to maturely discuss.
So you are the thought police? I follow the rules of this site and have every right to discuss and express my views even if they vary from yours.
Censoring me because I happen to be proud of a hometown politician who can herd the congressional cats into passing a difficult, albeit, imperfect bill? She is a master politician. Got it at her daddy's knee. Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro Pelosi, I suggest you read up on her family history. And why all this black and white? Just because I admire some aspects of a person does not mean I am a blind faith supporter.
Nancy did her job. You didn't expect to just wake up one day and have the sun shining, the birds singing and the butterflies fluttering did you? Now if we can only convince her that she should go to work on bank regulation, workers’ rights; get her to rescind the "impeachment off the table" stance-which I find personally abhorrent- then the window will open and some fresh air will begin to circulate. The political machine would have eaten her alive if she went that "liberal" route right out of the gate. She has a win under her belt and now she can begin to whip up some REAL change. She's been effective and you cannot deny that.
Hoping Hilary can build relationships and trust with other heads of states is immature? You want her to stay home and bake cookies? Stand by her man? HA! You have to build relationships before you can affect change (or is it 'effect change'?). Are you hoping she foments hatred and more distrust?
Bringing up RACE like what? When it is the core of our nation's soul (think Civil War 1860's, civil rights struggle 1960's), I'm not allowed to utter the term? When you hide racism under a rock, that's when it gets dangerous. Yes, I want to bring up racism, loud and clear. I want to shine the light of truth on its evil. Darn right I'll bring up race like THAT!
BTW, I read a lot, here and elsewhere. Stuff I agree with and stuff I don't. So please, I would ask you to refrain from your condescension.
I'm no thought police but your boss along with Pelosi and Hillary support such crock. You know, it's funny how even after showing their true colors you're so star struck by Obama, Hillary, and Pelosi that you sympathize with them just because they're Democrats. According to JJS, it's ok to commit a crime as a Democrat but not as a Republican. I condescend no one but I'm not a blithering fool like you.

Excuse us but she's the damn Speaker of the House and she has the power in her own hands to do it. If she's better than the Republicans, she shouldn't have to be made to do it. Obviously, she's corrupt beyond repair and should resign immediately ! And another thing. How come those corporate birds are singing and those corporate birds are fluttering thanks to her while we're rotting still thanks to her enabling the Republicans?
"Hoping Hilary can build relationships and trust with other heads of states is immature? You want her to stay home and bake cookies? Stand by her man?"
If she had done that and kept an eye on her hubby, Bush wouldn't have had a chance to steal that election. I'd rather she do that than make war against Afghanistan. Who's the racist now ?
"Bringing up RACE like what? When it is the core of our nation's soul (think Civil War 1860's, civil rights struggle 1960's), I'm not allowed to utter the term? I know racism exists and I see it out here in the Midwest but bringing it up in the middle of every issue is not how you solve it. That kind of a race baiting attitude is why rural MO stays deep red and blacks in St Louis and Kansas City are put through hell unfairly at the voting booths.
"BTW, I read a lot, here and elsewhere. Stuff I agree with and stuff I don't. So please, I would ask you to refrain from your condescension."
Well I'm sure you do. My lovely niece who loves Nader and proudly voted for him thrice would have this to say of you, OBAMABOTS !
"Excuse us but she's the damn Speaker of the House and she has the power in her own hands to do it.".....
The Speaker is not the Queen or a dictator, she needs the other members votes.
"If she had done that and kept an eye on her hubby, Bush wouldn't have had a chance to steal that election."...
So women should stay home and service their men? You're indicating you're a sexist and an historic revisionist with your Bush stealing the election was Clinton's fault. Clinton didn't even run against Bush. Gore disowned Clinton. Then he screwed up his challenge to the Florida recount. Just as important, the repubs had the voting machine "fix" in place. Diebold-remember?
"I know racism exists and I see it out here in the Midwest but bringing it up in the middle of every issue is not how you solve it."
Excuse ME, as I don't talk for everyone on this site like you apparently do, The article is about hatred as a political tool. What do you think rascim is? If the MO/KS folk were confronted more often, they may change at least in their public, civic lives. They are free to "think" what they want in their private lives. Instead they remain in their rural "ghettos" and get no pressure to change their attitudes. Talking about racism and instigating race baiting are quit different animals. Define your terms before you just through them out as code words for trying to suppress conversation.
Speaking of hatred, "blithering fool", "starstruck", "democrat sympathizer", "crimes", "OBAMABOT" might not be RACE baiting, but you're fishing for something. (my aside: what a prejudicial PUNK, "condescend no one" my a$$)
Oh, let your lovely niece speak for herself or maybe she should stay home, in the kitchen, pregnant and barefoot like you think Hilary should have.
Yeah anyone who opposes the Dims for committing the same crimes as the Repigs thinks " she should stay home, in the kitchen, pregnant and barefoot like you think Hilary should have" is just a pernicious smear and literally 100% untrue, it does show how simply black and white the Dim partty hack mind is though.
"Yeah anyone who opposes the Dims...... is just a pernicious smear and literally 100% untrue" (stereohead)
I think understand what you are trying to say. I'm sure you'll correct me if I misunderstood.
Recall it was Stanley1979 who said "If she (Hilary) had done that (stayed home and baked cookies-stood by her man) and kept an eye on her hubby,..." If Stan believes that it is a woman's responsibility when her husband commits adultery then it is REASONABLE to assume he feels all women should stay home, in the kitchen, pregnant, barefoot and servicing their men to keep them happy and from straying, including his lovely niece- the anti-OBAMABOT.
You paint a broad brush of assumptions with your preconceived notions. You should listen to some of Newt's old speeches, he did exactly the same thing. Or maybe that is where you learned your little "Straw Man" bugaboos.
When did anyone oppose holding dems (dims as you call them) accountable? I'll be the first to say "Let's start the hearings." The sooner the better. Just remember you have to have the votes in the House to begin the hearings. I would encourage anyone who lives in a state where any voter can vote in any primary regardless of affiliation to change that rule/law. Get out campaign and vote for the better primary candiate. When Sheehan gave Pelosi a run for her money it may have been a push that changed the undercurrent of things in congress. Who knows if Kucinich got some PEACE promises for his healthcare vote? Time will tell.
According to you, stereohead, anyone who opposes waiting for St. Ralph or Ron Paul, or Kucinich or whoever to be elected President and instead wants the congress to get up off it's ass and get something done is a sell out. That is 100% untrue and is like cutting off your nose dispite your face.
However incremental, even with the current BUMS in office, I'm not waiting for a savior, as I'm not waiting for Armageddon or the Rapture. If those things are coming, I certainly can't affect them. I'll try and get my voice/vote heard and get SOMETHING done. Our FU system is all I got to work with and if it is all just pissing in the wind, so be it.
In public discourse, I am always amazed at how you poo-poo pots are so quick to call the kettle black. For example: "....it does show how simply black and white the Dim partty hack mind is though."(stereohead)
Like, why a do you make such a similar statement to what I made earlier in the thread?: "And why all this black and white? Just because I admire some aspects of a person does not mean I am a blind faith supporter."(JJS)
Why do you play like like that? You think it's clever? "I am rubber you are glue anything you stay bounces off me and sticks to you?"
ps. I would never call you a pernicous smear.8^> Well, maybe, if I new a good one. Is poo-poo pot a smear?-))))
You naive liberals don't get it at all. The system is done, over the corporations burnt the democracy roast in the oven to a carbonized crisp. The best we can hope for from what I can see is electing Greens locally, taking care of our friends and neighbors of all races, ethnicities sexual orientations etc, and speaking out against classist smears by all "sides" by people who believe there is still hope in the system and hope to get their own particular rotten crew elevated by getting a larger group to hate a smaller group. In that regard you Dim fans are 100% the same as abjectly idiotic droolingly brain dead Sarah Palin followers.
What author said the second time as farce? IMO Chris Hedges isn't quite right, what we are looking at isn't fascism but more like slow steady decline of the Roman empire, and for a similar reason of the ruling class losing all touch with reality. Glenn Beck and friends aren't Hitler they are Caligula.
Isn't electing "Greens" locally or even nationally still working in the system?
And I encourage you to do so!
When did you get the monopoly for taking care of our brothers and sisters?
The crew that is elected is there, reality. They will be there for three more yrs, at least. Are you taking your ball and going home til the next election? 2010 is the interim vote. Are you going to the pols this Fall?
Why do use such terms as "Dims", "Repugs", "Obamabots" and "Palin Followers" "naive liberals".....? Aren't they your brothers and sisters?
Glenn Beck and Russ Limbo are money maker pawns for the MSM. If you can find it, I would suggest you explore for Prof. Mark Crispin Miller's research on media ownership and its history. Here is a graphic from about ten yrs ago. It's a good start http://www.thenation.com/special/bigten.html .
I must say I think you are most on target with your Roman Empire comparison. Instead of being poisoned by lead leeching from the water pipes the modern poison is greed. Are you familiar with Chalmers Johnson's "Blowback" trilogy?
"Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire"
"The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic"
"Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic."
"Glenn Beck and Russ Limbo are money maker pawns for the MSM."
So are Obama Rachel Maddow, and Keith Olberman, *both* Dims and Repigs serve at the behest of corporate power, that's why it was actually easier to get the first offshore drilling in 20 years under Obummer with little citizen outrage than it would have been been under the monstrous Bush. It takes a Dim to destroy a village. :( People like you who will forgive Obama things like endless escalated war, military tribunals, and increasing environmental destruction as long as done by your "team" are a huge part of the problem that keep the corporate duoply sock puppets in power IMO.
I read Sorrows of Empire but unlike you I actually understood what I was reading that U.S. societies increasing deference to the military, endless war, and overseas basing has been destructive under both Dems and Reps.
My brothers and sister are people who resist the suits in the suites, by those standards many Ron Paul supporters who oppose the empires wars and police state are better friends than any Obamabot who *suddenly* makes apologies for endless war and environmental destruction anointed by the saintly one. Of course I'd rather see Greens in power and co-ops across the land but given a choice between *only* Ron Paul or Obummer at this point I'd take Paul ad "the lesser of two evils" as you Dim supporters like to say.
Try again next time without leaving out the crimes of *also* corporate tool Dims just like Repigs.
Sigh!
"My brothers and sister are people who resist the suits in the suites, by those standards many Ron Paul supporters who oppose the empires wars and police state are better friends than any Obamabot who *suddenly* makes apologies for endless war and environmental destruction anointed by the saintly one."
WTF are you ranting about? Aren't the human race your brother and sister? Zenophobia comes in many forms, don't cha know? Watch out, it's gonna get you.
Obama is the president of the US-(GET OVER IT and get with the program), and of course that means many things and it means nothing (the paradox of existance and all that bologna-there is work to do GAWL-DAMMIT). Let's say Paul or Nader won the presidency last round. You actually think anything would get done in the house and senate where legislation actually happens? If you answer yes, you are smokin' t'at S**t.
Don't Bogart that joint, my friend-pass it over to meeeeeeee!!! Start from a green dog catcher and work it up from there.
If Obama is the president, he should lead, not tell people "make me do it" or say "let congress take care of it" where it suits him.
Clinton tried to "lead" the passage of healthcare legislation without the input of the congress. He and his healthcare czar, Hilary, failed miserably. It was said they "rammed it down our throats" and that is a true assessment. Obama averted that failure by letting the congress hash it out. He is still accused of ramming it down our throats, but because he let congress argue and debate, the ramming statement is false. If you don't like the results, then you need to find out how your representative argued, compromised and voted, then keep or change your vote for representation.
The three branches of Gov't Executive, Legislative, Judicial all have their co-equal roll to govern but it is by the consent of the govern where they are supposed to get their authority.
Your instant gratification mindset is anethema to the consensus building process needed to have effective policy implemented.
BTW haven't you ever heard the saying: "If the people lead the leaders will follow."?
I think you would be better off joining Fluffy Post and Dumdum Kos for you "intelligence".
Discouraging discourse again, are you? I mock your name calling and pat political labels, if you hadn't figured that out yet.
Right on this article is of about the same quality as Glenn' Beck's work and is nothing but part an ongoing campaign by the fawning corporate media to inflame hatred between Obama supporting neo- liberals and tea party members. The level of propaganda trying to inflame both sides has been so thick as to be obvious in my mind. What I don't understand is why? Does the establishment want to see more tension possibly leading to violence as an excuse for a crackdown?
Further the major premise of the article is flawed, sham health insurance reform is *nothing* like the G.I. bill which was public government assistance to help soldiers reintegrate into society, the Dim party/Obama health care is in fact privatization and creating a captive market that we the broke from outsourcing and financier malfeasance American people have to pay for out of our own pockets to the insurance companies that are part of the financier class that funded Obama's campaign. That is 100% the opposite of the effective positive public works socialism that was the G.I. bill. :(
Just when I thought CD was getting back on track with the Chomsky and environment articles about substantive issues we on the left can address in positive ways we get more this hate mongering.
Big thumbs down. Stop acting as a megaphone for corporate establishment hate mongering CD, you can do better than that.
Who's your sidekick, Joe?
To fix the hatred, let's start by fixing the Telecommunications Act of 1996 that Clinton signed which allowed for the growth of oligopolistic media corporations with political agendas to drowned out other media and fuel hatred. Crying foul all day to institutions dedicated to your destruction is not an effective strategy and neither is effective for Democrats to continue to appear on Fox and give it legitimacy. Any takers, Democrats? People with hatred is one thing, but having oligopolistic mass media streamline it into acceptability is another.
Great post.
Amen!
"The Republicans need to find someone with courage to disarm the rhetoric, before someone reloads for real."
First they have to want to and they don't. Republicans want fascism.
I don't like the pretense that something monumentally righteous happened with the passing of this bill.
Now we will be talking about the crazy people on the 'right', who have moved the whole government in their direction. And those poor democratic politcos who are needing body guards because they voted for not much of anything, just so they could win the big game.
And poor obama. We all know he has only the best of intentions - ethnicity and all that. He is no ordinary political operative. He just couldn't be!
Sorry. Racism is insipid and destructive whatever way you spin it.
Read the Bill Moyers piece today. And he is hardly a leftist. Although, i know that by the standards in certain circles, he is.
And why the heck do we care about newt. He was washed up years ago. But, the media, including this site, is making him relevant. So be it.
Well done, Jill!
Thanks Jill, i shall check it out!
When i was on the metro in DC last saturday, i sat next to a guy who had been in special forces as a medic for the past nine years. He was in the orignal invasion of iraq and in fallujah. He was stop lossed seven times. Four times to iraq and three times to afghanistan. He finally got shot in the back last month and wasn't sorry for it. He isn't paralyzed or anything, but needed to be at walter reed for the week. But now he won't be deployed again and he is out.
Anyway. He was intelligent and was supportive of the peace march (such as it was). He said he voted for obama, hoping that maybe something would change, but from his point of view, nothing has. Of course.
He was nearby at the time the CIA people were killed in afghanistan a couple of months ago. He said that i shouldn't think of a spy movie when i think of them. That they are people that just graduated with bachelors degrees in any random major. That is who is doing the job over there. He said all the experienced people are at langley.
I just thought i would throw this in. ;-)
Well said Jill!
It is a little hard to fight the Republicans. They have God on their side, plus the Flag, plus the NRA, plus the tea baggers, plus the giant corporations and billionaires that they pamper constantly. In addition, they have an enormous arsenal of guns including assault weapons to satisfy the 2nd amendment. Any tactic may be used to get their way, whether right or wrong. They control the worlds worst propaganda machine and blast us daily with it.
The Democrats have the ACLU and the gay community on their side. They had the blacks to help get Obama elected, but seem to be losing some of them now. The biggest budget deficit in history does not help either, (even though caused by the Republicans). This idea that there is no difference in the parties is nonsense and is not helpful. Listen to the outlandish rhetoric from the losers since the health care bill passed.
Outstanding!
I'm sure he'll ignore them.
The Obamabots are enthralled and mere words will not weaken their faith.
Both parties are merely overseers and we are the slaves.
The party that beats the slaves less is considered progressive.
Spot on, only I'd question if we are even being beat less by Obama considering the reverse Robin hood health insurance reform where we are forced to buy a shoddy product from an unaccountable rich insurance companies, and escalation of wars for oil and Israel, I'd say we are getting beaten just the same as under Bush, the only difference is the new master gives better speeches so the slaves complain less, that's all.
I agree. Ole Joe is hanging on to old ways of thinking that do not reflect the current reality. I had the same problem and gladly pulled the lever for Obama thinking in terms of 60's and 70's Democrat. The reality is, Clinton and Obama are beating the slaves as bad or worse than the Republicans. Clinton was a fool me once, Obama is a shame on me. Guys like RichM take great relish in realizing this trend before guys like me. He should take some mercy on our souls and guide us back to the track.
As for your Obama list, I'll add increased drone production and his suckling at the teats of wealthy bankers that have sealed the deal for me. This man is a corporate fascist puppet pure and simple.
You are mistaking neo-liberal corporate backed Democrats for actual leftists when you say "The Democrats have the ACLU and the gay community on their side. They had the blacks to help get Obama elected, but seem to be losing some of them now."
That would be Amy Goodman and Norman Finklestain and Arundhate Roy you are talking about who only have the support of the marginalized not Democrats at all. Obama was in fact mainly supported by the financier class like Goldman Sachs to get him elected so you are actually lying when you say the Dems only have the support of oppressed people.

(Same thing for the Dem party in general in the 2008 election.)
Read it and weep Dem fans just like Reps your party is a tool of elite financial interests and not a champion of gay rights and the ACLU as you disingenuously claim. In fact the ACLU is suing the Obama administration in multiple cases for continuing Bush's worst civil liberties abuses and not being transparent about it's actions

Try again, next time with more true telling Dem party hack. I thought the Bush supporters would be the worst most disingenuous supporters of oligarchy and malfeasance we'd ever see in America, but you guys and gals are running damn close I must say.
Very good article!
What was good about it? Be specific.
For me it is good 'cause it pissed you off and got you all riled up, poopie-pants.
that was a typo, Rich.
it should have read "between selfishness and shearing."
You tell them RichM, the Dim fans remind me more and more of the mindless "NASCAR dad" Bush supporters every day, the only difference is they drink fancier coffee and wear hipper clothes, there spinning and apologetics, for murderous war including brutal prisoner of war camps that grossly violate international law abroad, and for crony capitalism at home exactly mirrors the pro Bush tools. It's sad how pervasive group think is, and how easy it is to trigger. :( x 1000000
I swear many of these Dim fans would subject the tea partiers to mass arrest solely for their political views if they could get away with it. As someone who has been arrested for radical environmental activism ie my political views that is incredibly disheartening to see among so called "liberals." Suddenly they are beating the martial drum of "terrorist, domestic extremist" as loud as any vile neo-con. Hint Dim fans demonizing your fellow American citizens is no better than demonizing Muslims like the Bush people did and Sarah Palin does currently, it's the same sick broad brushing shit in fact, cut it out..
"The wealth of countless white middle class families today stems from World War II veteran housing bills that too often, we conveniently forget, discriminated against black veterans along with housing segregation."
What wealth Derrick?
Hmm. Maybe I'm not really white. I certainly missed the "white wealth" train. I guess I f'ed up somewhere, and I'm far from alone in that.
Anyway, identity politics aside, Jill makes a great point. The bill, which to my relief passed and will help people, is half-assed for the people and a boon to insurance companies. The Democrats certainly are not the shining knights.
And yeah we know why the Tea Party people are as they are. Their racism is painfully obvious, not to mention dangerous to all Americans since they are essentially supporting measures that would hurt workers and poor, the Teabaggers themselves included.
I got an email from Robert Greenwald urging his readers to petition the Republicans to stop spouting hateful rhetoric.
As if they're going to play fair and civil.
This might sound crazy, but I want the Republicans to keep saying outrageous, hateful, bigoted, paranoid things. You know why?
Because it makes them look bad and further alienates them from the rest of the country. It exposes them for what they are. They cannot defend it.
We all know why the Teabaggers don't want universal single payer. They don't want "others" getting free health care even if they'll get it too. It's sheer spite.
But you have to ask why the Democrats don't want universal single payer and gave us this compromised "fix."
Let the Republicans destroy themselves. Then we'll only have the Democrats to worry about.
