Rahm Emanuel's Think Tankers Enforce 'Message Discipline' Among 'Liberals'
The White House is ‘helping’ liberal groups to get their political messages in sync with the official line.
Over the past several weeks, independent journalists and anti-war activists have tried to shine a spotlight on how groups like the Center for American Progress and MoveOn, which portrayed themselves as anti-war during the Bush-era, are now supporting the escalation and continuation of wars because their guy is now commander-in-chief. CAP has been actively pounding the pavement in support of the escalation in Afghanistan, the rebranding of the Iraq occupation and, more recently, Obama's bloated military budget, which the group said was "on target." MoveOn has been silent on the escalation in Afghanistan and has devoted substantial resources to promoting a federal budget that includes a $21 billion increase in military spending from the Bush-era.
What is clear here is that CAP and MoveOn are now basically psuedo-official PR flaks targeting "liberals" to support the White House agenda. This, though, should not come as a shock to those who have closely monitored these groups. They were the primary force behind Americans Against Escalation in Iraq (AAEI), "a coalition that spent tens of millions of dollars using Iraq as a political bludgeon against Republican politicians, while refusing to pressure the Democratic Congress to actually cut off funding for the war." Now, according to John Stauber, executive director of the Center for Media and Democracy, the Center for American Progress is now running "Progressive Media which was begun by Tom Matzzie and David Brock in 2008 and now ‘represents a serious ratcheting up of efforts to present a united liberal front in the coming policy wars....' [These groups] are working hard to push Obama's policies, including rationalizlng or defending his escalation of the wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan as "sustainable security."
On Wednesday, Ben Smith at Politico reported on the latest development in this White House-coordinated campaign to use these think-tankers to whip up support for its agenda. It is a newly formed coalition, the Common Purpose Project, which blogger Jane Hamsher describes as "one of the many groups Rahm Emanuel has set up to coordinate messaging among liberal interest groups." This one includes the direct participation of White House officials, according to Smith:
The Common Purpose meeting every Tuesday afternoon at the Capitol Hilton brings together the top officials from a range of left-leaning organizations, from labor groups like Change to Win to activists like MoveOn.org, all in support of the White House's agenda. The group has an overlapping membership with a daily 8:45 a.m. call run by the Center for American Progress' and Media Matters' political arms; with the new field-oriented coalition Unity ‘09; and with the groups that allied to back the budget as the Campaign to Rebuild and Renew America Now.Unlike those other groups, however, the Common Purpose meeting has involved a White House official, communications director Ellen Moran, two sources familiar with the meeting said. It's aimed, said one, at "providing a way for the White House to manage its relationships with some of these independent groups."
Common Purpose was founded by Erik Smith, a former aide to Dick Gephardt. The group's political director is former Obama aide, Miti Sathe. "Common Purpose is formed as a 501(c)(4), which leaves it focused on policy, rather than electoral, work," notes Smith. "Part of the group's role is to enforce a kind of message discipline." He tells the story of how last month "some of the more liberal members of the coalition" were launching a campaign against conservative Democrats under the banner "Dog the Blue Dogs." The White House, Smith alleged, "was in the midst of discussions with members of the congressional Blue Dog caucus, and objected to the slogan, which was promptly changed, and the page describing the drive is gone from CAF [Campaign for America's Future, a participant in the Common Purposes calls]'s website."
Hamsher, who wrote an interesting response to the Politico report with a different spin on the above story, concluded:
There's a big problem right now with the traditional liberal interest groups sitting on the sidelines around major issues because they don't want to buck the White House for fear of getting cut out of the dialogue, or having their funding slashed. Someone picks up a phone, calls a big donor, and the next thing you know...the money is gone. It's already happened. Because that's the way Rahm plays.

Show AllSuch remarkable cynicism! For the first time on here, I am seeing Thomas Moore agreeing with people. No offense, Thomas, but you do take a stand far to the right of most of the participants, but such joy in knocking any left group or idea is too obvious.
I have frequently said that no president, either Democrat or Republican could have kept us out of Afghanistan When they refused to turn Osama Bin Laden over to our jurisprudence, it was a guarantee to war. And no president other than Bush would have invented this war in Iraq. So as an unashamedly politically active Democrat, I am encouraging Obama to get us out of Iraq even faster than he is doing now, and tolerating the continued presence in Afghanistan until Bin Laden can be brought to justice and the situation made relatively stable there. Our very presence destabilizes both countries, so perfect stability will not be achieved. Both wars are faulty in thinking and destructive in effect, but sometimes politics is more about the best possible compromise than the best possible outcome.
It's supposed to be illegal for the U.S. government to disseminate propaganda to the U.S. public.
This point came up when the Reagan administration ran an "Office of Public Diplomacy" (I think it was called) to spread anti-Sandinista propaganda to U.S. citizens. Reagan then reinforced those lies in his speeches, suggesting that Nicaragua was planning to invade the United States, etc.
The Common Purpose Project run by Obama's goon, which Scahill describes in this article, likely has the same effect as the more traditional propaganda that was practiced by Reagan. It also seems similarly focused on getting the public to accept war plans.
Hmmm, now we know what Obama meant when he said he admires Ronald Reagan.
This is an excellent article. However, I don't think that the targets of Obama's propaganda effort - mainstream loyalist Dems - are reading it.

What is happening today is the Demoks are evolving tough skins of thugs.
Isn't "devolving tough skins of thugs" more accurate?

Rahm Emanuel is Israel's man in Washington (his father was an Israeli terrorist, for crying out loud). Is it any surprise the U.S. is escalating in the Mideast?
"It is a newly formed coalition, the Common Purpose Project, which blogger Jane Hamsher describes as "one of the many groups Rahm Emanuel has set up to coordinate messaging among liberal interest groups." This one includes the direct participation of White House officials, according to Smith..."
So much for "grass-roots" organizing.
I always was suspicious of MoveOn...
As for Rahm's demand for "public service" it probably derives from his Israeli citizenship, where military service is required of virtually everyone.

The world of manufactured reality where all reality is manufactured for people including thought. In the river of time this is the way things had become upon the earth so things had always happened like this to lead to this day that is now while I am merely on my journey through this world of manufactured reality where more & more people write about this world being an insane asylum & becoming Hell on Earth.
Who could have ever predicted such things?
Life is good. What and experience! It's always best to forgive.
Mark Twain wrote the same stuff as America was going to enter WW1. He watched the parade of otherwise good people be whipped into a frenzy to get on message and kill the enemy.
Another insightful article by Scahill. It's good to see CD posting his writings.
I am so happy to not see any Obama-Bots post here on this subject.
I am glad to see people can See Rahm Emanuel as the Zionist he is.
Obama is a cruel HOAX that has been played on the hearts & minds of the good Americans of this country.
They are currently Embezzling all our money to the elite, to the banksters and wall st financiers.
Timothy Geithner the former president of the (not-so-federal) federal reserve is trying to do the complete takeover of our government and money into the federal reserves control.
Both Geithner and Summers are awful financial advisors and money managers who need to go.
I do hope people start to wake up to the Falsr Left/Right Paradigm in this country that is being used as a wedge to divide the good American citizens of this country.
We need to be on the side of Justice Liberty and Freedom - We need to strip the President of Executive Power and put the Power back in the hands of the Representatives of the PEOPLE, namely Congress.
We NEED to open our electoral process to a wider amount of parties, Third parties have to become the way of the future
We need to break the iron fisted grip of the democrat/republican strangle hold that they have on our country
like Mussolini rightfully said, a better name for fascism should be corporatism the combination of Government and Big Business (or in this case private Banks) that is exactly what America is - we need to change that!

The diabolically cynical orgainzation MoveOn was contemptable when they were founded to defend the globo-neoliberal, capitalist, oversexed, libertine scumbag Clinton and they are now equally contemptable defending the wall street robber barron ass-kissing, reverse robin-hooding, imperial war-mongering, totally phoney Obama.
And that's putting it Nicely
Leftist
While not agreeing with all the context, the conclusion is spot on.
Actually, I was just enjoying seeing how many derogatory ajectives (some of them neologisms like "robin-hooding") I could string toghther in a sentence.
LOL
Great!!
I'm glad to see at Scahill and some others, like those commenting here, are wide awake on this issue. And Obama, via Emanuel (I think it's fair to assume that Obama knew exactly what he was getting with Emanuel and that's precisely why he chose him) is apparently shaping the media message vis-a-vis "liberals" in exactly the way the Bush admin did. Once again, already, we're "outsiders"! As in today's AP story on Obama's request for $83 billion more for war: the request is "disappointing the most liberal, anti-war wing of his party."
I wonder if the guy who created the famous "Change" campaign posters of Obama with a face half-red, half-blue, is beginning to realize what he was picking up on is how two-faced Obama is??
Did you ever notice that when somebody says, "We have to speak with one voice on this issue," that it's always THEIR voice, never yours?
I've got one voice and it works just fine, thanks.
Yes I have. These guys have a doctorate in doubletalk. Rove used this a lot. They always accuse the "other" party of doing something they are doing or about to do. You can always tell when a person has something really important for the good of the people to try to get accross because the MSM sniffs at them or ridicules them or smears them personnaly instead of addressing the issue (see what they did and do to Nader and Kucinich).
Does anyone know why VoteVets is completely behind the buildup in Afghanistan and Pakistan? Of all people, they should know the cost--the cost to our soldiers and their civilians. Yet, they send a petition to let Obama know you're behind him. The hell I am.
Obama has at least three things helping him become, as Bruce Fine calls him, the Czar:
1. the many people who supported him, read the headlines and don't go any further. Mostly this happens because they are working so hard trying to survive and secondly, they thought everything would be O.K. once Bush left office. So notice the headlines our "press" feeds us: Obama to close Guantanamo. Detainees are no longer Enemy Combatants--it sounds right, it's just utterly misleading.
2. He has worshippers. These people wanted a strong man on the left to come in and "save" us. These people are the most difficult to reach because they invested everything in this strongman. They got their strongman, but will not recongnize that having one isn't a good thing, it's dangerous.
3. Then the oligarchy who does know exactly what is happening and will cynically say/do/write anything to put their policies in place.
This leaves a much smaller group of people that will honestly try to see what is being done and who will speak up when that something is wrong.

JILL: Good points. I would add # 4: Marketing, the power of "team affiliation," and the false sense that OTHER is now in power.
What is so amazing is the depth and influence of Orwellian like "name" changes. So many take the name for a thing for what that thing (or person) is. And so convinced in this two-party nation that the "better team" regained power, they don't look much further. If they should try, every media outlet plays into the illusion that there ARE two opposing political parties and since policies are defined by buzz words and slogans rather than depthful coverage, even somewhat intelligent persons remain CLUELESS. How many who use the MSM for their "news" recognize the many policy decisions Obama has taken that merely rubber stamp or continue those of Bush?
Food isn't food, it's filler. News isn't true, it's entertainment. The politics of the nation has become an exceedingly expensive theater of appearances where substance is hidden from the audience's view. Small wonder that more and more are taking anti-depressant drugs and/or sleep aids.
And I wanted to ask you to comment on the "fight" between Rove and Biden. How convenient is it to make the two parties growl at each other when they are both part of the same corrupt corporation oligarchy? These psyops people are working overtime to fool us. And what about the teenage girl getting a lashing by the Taliban just when Obama wants to send more troops to Afghanistan? Then when Obama requests 83 Billion more for wars, 1) Gates says he is "cutting pentagon spending" and 2) 5 of our soldiers get killed in Irak in the worst attack in months. These people have no conscience, shame, morals, principles or humanity. Our country is finished with these psychos in charge.
Precisely put. Thank you. And how many of the rubes know how many reporters have a second pay check from a "certain" Central government Agency that has something to do with intelligence?
I really do think that people are waking up though. However, our only recourse when our party with a platform to revoke corporation personhood is not allowed on the ballot is to NOT VOTE at all. If only two or three million voted in national elections, the gatekeepers would lose their entitlement. Furthermore, the fear of a fascist take over may be justified by the fact that a fascist government eventually destroys a country by getting itself in a war and getting bombed to ashes like Germany. The authoritarians don't get that if they shut off our democracy, they are going to be eventually destroyed. And then they'll wail like Hitler did at the end that "the German (insert American) people didn't deserve to be winners and should be destroyed".
For the first time in my seventy-plus years, up is most sickeningly feeling like down. A rabid Limbaugh supporter yesterday actually jumped in to defend Obama when I commented on what his administration was doing. And now this.
STOP THE WORLD! I WANT TO GET OFF!

Pockets
Here we have this Uncle Sam who used to be a generous sort to the less privileged and many pockets for the things of peace like the sick, infirm, the poor , the needy and to give all a chance to live a dream to the future.
Yet it has been for many years where this Uncle Sam has emptied his peace pockets and filled them with war implements, ideas, groups; not for the defense of the ideals set forth from our beginnings
The pockets are deep and giving to the privileged, the greedy who would not share and a war machine to help them acquire what they would from whoever they could with no thought to life or limb or others property or goods or any dream they may nurture.
This Uncle Sam is starting to look ratty and worn from being a practitioner of usury with the less privileged and loading up the “other class” and borrowing to and from the future, if any, from the pockets of peace. Peace has more pockets but empty ones and the war ones would keep it that way by hoping that we are nothing but lemmings
What are we? Tony 5/10/09
My desire to flee this country and start anew somewher else is stronger now than it was in '03 with bush's war coming down. My brother moved to Canada and I was seriously looking at Ireland.
But my poor brother has found out that, while it is great to be able to see a doctor without going bankrupt, and he was finally able to formally marry his longtime partner, Canada is hardly the social-democratic paradise that he thought it would be. Truth be told, Toronto, including it's politics are juat like any big US city - including the reactionary right-attitudes in the suburbs. But being as his partner is a Louisiana-Acadian, they will probably move to much more progressive (they speak French, after all) Montreal and get active in the Bloc Quebecois.
And now, me and my wife are both over 50 and unlikely to get a work permit in Ireland Their economy has tanked. The Celtic tiger has learned that 90 years after that kicked out the British imperialsits, that had become used-up vassals of Intel and Microsoft.
Leftist
Thanks for the real information about Canada and mentioning
Bloc Quebecois. I didn't know much about them so I looked it up.
I hope ya'll don't leave the US, but if you are really determined to keep looking...how about France? There have been a number of posters here that moved there and they say the medical system is the best.
But why not stick it out here just a bit longer, things may turn around?
wilmoor
I'm with you brother, I haven't seen anything like this before, not economically nor governmentally.
Lets not get off though, lets reject these Toads faster than we did Cheney and his Frogs.
You're right, Thomas. It isn't the time to get off. I'm also pushing hard on the concept of voting out members of the senate after one term and the house after three. Six years each is all it takes for them to become corrupted. If a president can only serve eight years tops, why should the congress get a free pass? And when they no longer have their golden goose, the two parties won't be so anxious to shut out the independent parties, and those truly interested in serving for the good of the people will have a chance to do so. Term limits ever passing is as likely as time going backwards, but that doesn't mean term limits can't be executed by we the people, does it.
I am with you. I can't wait till 2010 (if I make it) we'll show the bunch of them what term limits really are. There are some there I think should stay, but I can't vote for them anyway. Incumbents look out!
I have to admit I agree with you on this one.
-A rabid Limbaugh supporter yesterday actually jumped in to defend Obama when I commented on what his administration was doing. And now this.
yeah, that kinda gives the game away, doesn't it? But the US has been "inverted" for some time now, believe me.
And I get the distinct impression that you guys, "progressives" or "liberals" or whatever, you know, people who belive in peace and good healthcare and not bankrupting future generations with multi-trillion dollar give-aways to billionaires, why do I get the feeling that you guys are way unprepared to take on Obama and the military/media conplex?
jlocke
"why do I get the feeling that you guys are way unprepared to take on Obama and the military/media conplex?"
Because apparently we are unprepared? That could be it. The American worker and the American citizen betrayed on every side.....by every side....not something we are used to.
-Because apparently we are unprepared? That could be it
HaHa, yes, nice!
first - obama is not leftist
he is a fascist with charm
when his seven million man civil defense squad is kicking the shit out of you for wearing the wrong tee shirt you will know
also rahm e has been talking about forced government servitude - he thinks that everyone, including seniors, should donate three months every two years to government service - what the fuck is he talking about
this is how fascism started in both italy under el duce and germany under the nazis
their fascist movements were ground up not top down
as chomsky points out, referring to the united states, the republic of germany went from being the height of western culture to barbarian in less than 10 years
when the nazis took power in germany 60% of the membership was unemployed
rahm emmanuel comes across to me like another very famous propagandist-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Goebbels
both appear, after a quick glimpse - to be lifeless bloodless vampires
this is different from cheney and rumsfeld who, clearly appear to be reptilian
Get rid of the bloody minded zionists. Particularly the ones with dual citizenship.
Sophie Scholl-The Final Days
Now that's change we can believe in!
The people get the chump change, the corporate elite get the billions of dollars.
Democrat or republican, conservative or liberal, a whore is a whore.
q
People always said the first Black man in the White House would be a Republican. Who knew that we got one by voting for a Democrat.
Unless Obama starts showing American workers some job security damn fast he's going to be a one term president. He's also on track for completely removing the concept of political process as a positive force for change.
Obama, you're not between the bankers and the pitchforks; you're WITH the bankers, in front of the pitchforks.
Great analogy!
Democrat + Guilt = Republican
Republican – Diplomacy = Democrat
I would say
republican + diplomacy = democrat
And I would say,
republican=nazi
democrat=fascist
Message Discipline=Mind Control
Put lipstick on it, i.e."message discipline".
And a power monger is a power monger...
Real change in the US will happen when the people cast off the government entirely...regionalism is the way to go.
Real change will only come when people refuse to accept the narrative that the mainstream puts out, which is that there are only two viable parties.
A third party becomes viable when the voters make it viable (by voting outside of the 2 party system).
Unfortunately, marketing and lying works, and the people fall in line and don't challenge the status quo, yet expect a change. Now they have seen their last hope fade away.
“If there is no struggle, there is no progress,” declared Frederick Douglass in 1857, in response to those who suggested that the great abolitionist was pushing too hard for an end to human bondage. “Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”
