McCain Surely Needs Lessons in Diplomacy
John McCain, the Republican nominee for president, ridicules as naive his rival Barack Obama's promise to talk to the leaders of the nation's adversaries -- among them Iran and North Korea.
So would McCain prefer to keep the U.S. in a state of permanent hostility, possibly leading to war? He falsely claims that Obama would enter a dialogue without preparation. No U.S. leader would come to any summit meeting with a designated enemy without an agenda -- but no responsible leader would fail to seek all possible roads to peace.
Would McCain prefer to start another war rather than discuss formidable issues with other nations? For those who prefer war, any such contacts are foolishly called "appeasement."
Not true.
War should be the last resort rather than at the top of the agenda as the neo-conservatives would have it. Those who prefer hostilities usually leave the fighting and dying to others. McCain and his followers want to impose conditions before any U.S. talks with Tehran and Pyongyang. Why would a sovereign nation submit to conditions imposed by an adversary simply to begin a dialogue? Iran and North Korea are under constant threat from U.S. policy makers. The result is not to scare those countries, but to bolster their belligerence.
We live in a dangerous and changing world and the first thing American leaders have to learn is that -- despite our military might -- we cannot call all the shots. Pax Americana no longer applies, especially with the economic train wreck we now face. So why not talk?
President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the World War II military commander, said at the beginning of the cold war that he would go anywhere, anytime, in pursuit of peace. No one dared to call Ike an "appeaser." At the outset of his administration he pushed for co-existence with the former Soviet Union.
Most leaders who followed Eisenhower to the White House understood the value of sounding out our adversaries and negotiating with them.
In his 1961 inaugural address, President John F. Kennedy said "we should never negotiate in fear or fear to negotiate." Kennedy met in Vienna with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev and was shocked at Khrushchev's ranting, but the U.S. and Soviet Union later set up a "hot line" to speed up communications in any crisis. It served both nuclear-armed superpowers well during the Cuban missile crisis.
President Richard M. Nixon also initiated arms reduction talks with Moscow and ushered in an era of detente. With the Helsinki Accords, President Gerald R. Ford paved the way to breaking down Soviet travel barriers in Eastern Europe. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan also took strong stands on the Cold War but stood ready to talk to Soviet leaders.
So the predecessors of President Bush understood the value of seeking rapprochements with antagonists. As part of the neo-con philosophy Bush invaded Iraq without giving the nation an honest reason for the war. America and Iraq have paid a heavy price for that war.
U.S. officials are hoping for "victory" in Iraq, but this is an impossible dream. With heavily armed American troops still in Baghdad, U.S. officials are speaking of winning the war. McCain says it is a "must" and while casualties are down, the war is far from over. And the neo-cons, whose philosophy of empire building is being repudiated, have fled to the safe houses, universities and Washington right-wing think tanks.
The administration has found a way to diminish the number of Iraqi fighters by paying 90,000 Iraqis not to fight us. When is the U.S. going to get its act together?
Let's hope the new leader we pick on Nov. 4 will opt for peace and arms negotiations instead of mindless war.

That would not be McCain or his kind…
"President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the World War II military commander, said at the beginning of the cold war that he would go anywhere, anytime, in pursuit of peace. No one dared to call Ike an "appeaser."
This is an excellent point. And applied to most before Bush as she points out. They all understood that it takes two to achieve peace, that a strong military is prerequisite for peace and military force should be your last resort.
As one poster rightly pointed out, Eisenhower was engaged in Viet Nam by Trumans policies and Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon were captive to that policy, other than that they adhered to Eisenhowers statement pretty much.
I'm berginning to worry that McCain may be more Bush than Eisenhower.
In his farewell address, Eisenhower gave some very good advice.
It would seem that neither our government, nor our citizenry, has followed his
advice.
Well maybe someone can tell me why the copied portion of his speach didn't post.
It can be found by Googling Dwight Eisenhower's farewell speach.
After the Reagen/Bush destruction of the United States what national leader would want to waste time talking to America?
Mccain is a party hack and a neocon puppet in one. He doesn't care about history. Then again, neither does Obama care about peace. Nader, Mckinney, Paul, and even Bob Barr do.
John McCain is a fearful little man. Afraid to talk with those he doesn't like. Is it any surprise he avoided eye contact with Obama? Tell the American people not to vote for such a gutless man who is afraid to talk to those he designates as our enemies.
He's fearful of having people look into his eyes because he's heard his boss talk too often of looking into someone's eyes and what he's seen there.
All the Republicans have to offer is fear.
Fear of terrorists. China. Russia.
Fear of failure in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Fear of economic collapse.
Fear of enemies at home and abroad.
The Republican dictionary has 13 pages about 'fear' but it does not include the word 'diplomacy'.
So would McCain prefer to keep the U.S. in a state of permanent hostility, possibly leading to war?
Yes. McCain is a Glory Seeker, a not very bright one, a belligerent one, an angry one, a contemptuous one, one who spent his adult life always thinking like a warrior. Unlike the punk George Wanker Bush, the roller rink Patton, McCain is the real thing. He wants war and like so many professional soldiers has absolutely no idea whatsoever that the paths of glory lead but to the grave.
I was wondering if anyone has heard about this article at the Nation Institute on John McCain's cover up of POW's left behind in Laos and Vietnam?
http://www.nationinstitute.org/p/schanberg09182008pt1
Is this old or new? Is it credible?
It is quite well known by those who dig for the truth in these matters, and I have seen YouTube interviews with fellow POWs who discuss this heavily covered-up (and never mentioned in the MSM) part of McCain's record.
It is taboo, and will not come to general light during this election season, that's certain.
Perhaps no one dared to call Ike an appeaser, but here's a little trip down Cold War Memory Lane:
Robert W. Welch Jr., founder of the John Birch Socity in 1958, called Eisenhower, "A conscious, card-carrying member of the Communist Party."
He's do quite well on radio today, no doubt.
A John Bircher would probably think that. Of course to them a Neocon would be a raving leftist radical.
Limbaugh might be looking for a job.
I wish intelligent journalists such as Helen Thomas would call the "war" what it now is--an occupation. No one has ever "won" an occupation.
As for John McCain, I wonder if he's ever been diagnosed and/or treated for post traumatic stress syndrome? He certainly must suffer from it (it's not like one can recover from it). I think that's where a lot of his anger and impatience comes from, not to mention his bitterness and lack of civility. The only explanation for his lies is ruthless ambition, for which there is, apparently, no cure, short of death.
I watched John McCain talking somewhere a few days ago, and he said that he'd returned to the states after being turned loose (or whatever it's called when one is a prisoner or war), and basically shook himself and got down to the business of one day becoming president (my words, not his). But from what he said he'd done, I got the distinct impression that seeking treatment for post traumatic stress syndrome would have been the last thing he'd have done because that would have made him appear weak.

Too bad your respect doesn't extend to a knowledge of the English language.
The best reason for making sure McCain never gets near the presidency was expressed by a former North Vietnamese POW Phillip Butler, who was in the Hanoi Hilton with McCain:
"I can verify that John [McCain] has an infamous reputation for being a hot head. He has a quick and explosive temper that many have experienced first hand. Folks, quite honestly, that is not the finger I want next to that red button."

McCain has never been that bright except in currying favor with the national media and constantly promoting himself and shamelessly pimping his 'war hero' record. He's been running for president since he entered the Senate, and, like Junior, has a compulsive need to outdo his more accomplished father.
Imagine if John Kerry had caved in and given info on his ship and squadron in return for medical treatment; if Kerry had taped broadcasts for Ho Chi Minh wherein he called himself an 'air pirate'; if he had admitted he broke under torture, as McCain has. 'Traitor' would be the mildest thing the wingnuts would call him.
RSJ,
That's all well and good. Where were you?
Thank you....beat me to it.
Chill Helen & Obama People. Your man Obama WILL be the next president of the United States. That was apparent when impeachment was stated as 'being off the table". The deal was struck then. McCain's feeble campaign -- from the lackluster convention staging, to the chromakey green screen that was allowed to just sit there (UGH) while he talked, proved there's no one home. McCain is a placeholder, just like Kerry and Gore were. He's taking one for the team just as they did.
Relish in the thought that Obama will win next month, but be assured, the killing and looting by the pentagon thugs will never cease.
But, I guess you'll all feel better.
moonpie,
"But, I guess you'll all feel better." Compared to the previous eight years? I hope so! Otherwise, I want every act passed since 1999 to be revoked. We can sort it out later. If the Dems or a party more progressive doesn't publish their winners The ones standing here today can carry the ball. Muchachos an Senoritas!
Moonbat
It ain't over till it's over.
It's obvious -- Barack should have picked Helen Thomas for VP. Better yet, Americans should just write her in for the #1 job!
Thanks, Helen!!
Am I supposed to be impressed?
I don't care that Obama would talk with them, because he still calls them adversaries, and they aren't.
This is a minuscule difference, high-level talks vs. low level talks.
"Let's hope the new leader we pick on Nov. 4 will opt for peace and arms negotiations instead of mindless war."
Read their campaign literature. Your hope is not based in reality.
I've noticed that all of the McCain-Palin ads are about creating fear and not one of them has been substantive, laying out an agenda or teaching us WHY his policies will be good for us. Of course, Obama's ads have only been filled with platitudes...
That is funny....I hear that McBush talked the ears of the North Vietnamese "nation's adversaries "..in fact he wouldn't shut the fuck up after a little "enhanced interrogation"

Never mind.
everyone’s worried about them forestalling or canceling the election. don’t you know there is no need for this? the electronic voting machines are and have been rigged from day one. there hasn’t been a real election ever since they came out with electronic voting machines. the cheney machine isn’t even worried about this. let’s just hope that american soldiers won’t shoot americans. but, remember, cheney has had foreign troops (mostly russians) training inside the usa for over three years now, and i don’t think they’ll think twice about killing us. this thing is deeper than we think, and has been planned ever since george h w bush became vice-president, that is AFTER he was DIRECTOR of the CIA. don't bother speculating on who will win this election. that was decided a long time ago, and not by the american voter. i've always had a lot of respect for helen hunt, but i don't know after reading this article. either she's too hopeful, naive, or she's just part of the bought and paid for media.
.I am not saying that the election isnt rigged, but I dont understand why it should be as both candidates serve the same folks as Bush has.

We see things, not as they are, but as we are.

hey ardee,
i know what you're saying. i feel the reason the nancy pelosi crowd pretends to be "liberal" and the boehner crowd pretends to be "conservative" is to put on a charade for the american sheeple so they might actually believe that their fake vote makes a difference. there are no more republicans or democrats in government, only corporate backed scumbags who lie to us to enrich their own bank accounts. government needs to put on a good show so that the sheeple can pretend they know something about politics and feel good about themselves. also, it's a distraction from the real truth of matters, and probably even prevents most sheeple from ever really trying to get to the bottom of any issues.
I wish someone would ask Senator McCain to define this elusive “victory” that he is after. In the established military lexicon (and he is a military man) victory means “defeating the enemy in battle or war”, or “subjugation” of another nation. Iraqis were defeated in war in April 2003, and the man in combat jacket declared that in May the same year... mission accomplished! And if Mr McCain is after subjugating the Iraqis they have already shown us that will never happen.
So, please Helen, next time you get a chance ask Senator McCain to define “victory” so that we all understand what he is after. Maybe this man who "understands" everything, can help all us ediots who "don't understand" and "don't get it" to become a little smarter, like his running mate.
Helen Thomas has been there, seen it, knows it and "calls" it. I think we might get lucky with a new President. Maybe not.
An unintended consequence of this terrible bill (bail out and "up"(as the House gives the American public the virtual finger), might be that the country will not have money to keep troops all over the world and occupying Iraq, Afghanistan. Hang on, a bumpy ride ahead and start looking for good, new politicians for Congress.
If Nixon hadn't negotiated with the enemy in Vietnam, McCain would have died in captivity.
Did you see McCain's war record, he downed more US planes than the Viet Cong Air Force?
