British PM Calls Gaza 'Prison Camp'
ANKARA - British Prime Minister David Cameron Tuesday urged Israel to lift the blockade of the Gaza Strip, slamming the current state of the Palestinian enclave as a "prison camp."

British Prime Minister David Cameron has urged Israel to lift its blockade of the Gaza Strip, slamming the current state of the Palestinian enclave as a "prison camp." (AFP/File/Said Khatib) "Let me be clear that the situation in Gaza has to change . . . Gaza cannot and must not be allowed to remain a prison camp," he said in a speech to a business association during a visit to Turkey.
Speaking later after talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Cameron defended his description, saying that "even though some progress has been made we're still in a situation where it's very difficult to get in, it's very difficult to get out . . .
"We've long supported lifting the blockade of Gaza," he said.
Cameron however acknowledged Israel's security concerns, pointing to rocket attacks from Gaza, run by the radical Palestinian group Hamas, on Israel.
"We both share the view that direct talks (between Israel and the Palestinians) is the right answer," he said, referring to Erdogan.
Following international uproar over a deadly Israeli raid on Gaza-bound aid ships on May 31, the Jewish state said it would begin allowing all purely civilian goods into Gaza.
It said it would also allow building materials into the territory but only for internationally supervised projects and that its naval blockade would remain in place to keep Hamas from importing military-grade rockets and other weapons.
The Gazan economy is also being further stifled by an inability to export goods.
Cameron also called on Turkey to repair ties with Israel, which plunged into a deep crisis after the raid on the aid flotilla left nine Turkish activists.
"Turkey has been a good friend of Israel in the past. I very much hope Turkey can go on being a friend of Israel because . . . as a friend of Israel, Turkey will maximise her influence over what needs to happen in terms of those direct talks," he said.
Ankara has urged the Jewish state, once a close ally, to apologize over the bloodshed, compensate the families of the dead and lift the blockade of Gaza.
"Turkey's relationships in the region, both with Israel and with the Arab world, are of incalculable value," Cameron said.
"And I urge Turkey and Israel not to give up on their friendship," he added.

"Cameron also called on Turkey to repair ties with Israel, which plunged into a deep crisis after the raid on the aid flotilla left nine Turkish activists."
It is Israel that needs to do the repair work. Cameron's statement falsely casts Turkey as the offender in this situation.
I would love to have some major world leaders offer well deserved criticism of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians without subsequently falling all over themselves trying to spin their own comments.

"It is Israel that needs to do the repair work."
Absolutely correct. Still, at least Cameron used the words "prison camp" and can't unsay them.
That's it now.
He may say he misspoke later... Well see.
And, more to the point, he won't unsay them.
The Israeli hegemony over American policy keeps the American President from saying the same thing. We have become the United States of Israel.
U r so right! Isreal's arrogance is repulsive and everytime he speaks with usa prez goes back to israel and bombs the bejesus out of palestinians. Thank u David cameron for realising it was a concentration camp But I differ with u re Israel special circumstance. U saw it and israel has nukes, rockets into israel rarely hit anything, but israel bombs the Palestinans by air, incl drones, they come into palestinain homes and murder everybody, they perpetually lie. Also by the signs Judaism is not zionism and israel is apartheid state=racism!
Israels arrogance is is sickening they need to be put in their place by the world court.
I suppose it wouldn't have been very diplomatic (for a couple of reasons I can think of) to use a term that would have actually been more accurate: concentration camp.
Aye, and he could even have said it in the canonical (tho not the original) language: Konzentrationslager, though Straflager would also suit the reality.
Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great, and would suffice.
Cameron's a clorty pillock, tho Obastard's miles in front in the pillockry stakes.
How about putting those lines of verse inside quotation marks and giving Robert Frost his due credit?
q
I didn't (and don't) think I needed to. Surely you're not suggesting it's unfamiliar to people likely to be reading CD?
Familiarity is not the point. It's giving credit where it's due.
The style is so obviously Frost, that just using it is giving credit IMO.
Sorry, I don't know much aboutFrost beyond "good fences make good neighbors" and "the road less traveled" both of which world leaders need to read until they understand. Gaza a prison camp now? How they must long for the good old days, when they were a bantustan! UK conservatives are less dickish than our variety, unless you're thinking of Tony tone-deaf Hayward. Israel needs to see Palestinians as human beings; that might help the problem which leads to their image problem, which is their only real concern.
I thought it was lyrics from a Rage song I hadn't heard.
Interesting rhetoric from the head of Tories. A shift in the winds of change? Or classic Clintonian triangulation while austerity measures are put in place? On its face, a positive move.
David Cameron has still said what Gordon Brown and "New Labor" or fake Labor wouldn't ever say, but needed to say.
AD
Cameron is saying Turkey needs to help repair Israel's Prison Camp.
Wha???
The two state solution is now a Jewish State guarding a repaired Prison Camp.
Good for him. Too bad Obombya has no spine. Gaza is Israel's Warsaw Ghetto. What is Israel's "final solution" to their Palestinian problem?
Hail Brittania !
good for him, Now put the nuts back on the BBC that Blair took away. In Canada if a story makes Harper ( PM) look bad it is removed from web sites in hours
Control the media and you control the people.

Times are a changing.... I never imagined I would read such a thing in the New York Times. I actually hate Cohen less for writing this article... And i have been hating him for a very long time. Cameron is looking out for UKs future. He saw what sucking GWB off did for Blair and their country and decided to do the patriotic thing and do what is right. He isn't going to take it back. This wasn't about trying to pressure Israel. It was about cozying up to Turkey. Turkey is an up and coming power. Israel and the US are on the decline. If that isn't obvious to the CD readers just wait another 5 years.

I had never heard these lines... I thought, "be fair, probably posted off forgetting to use quotes".. but then I found that was not the case..
