Obama Urges Climate Change Action
An Arctic fox hunts in Svalbard close to Ny-Aalesund in April 2009. Polar bear cubs, the arctic fox and caribou herds are among the victims of dramatic changes in the Arctic due to climate change, a study published Thursday found. (AFP/File/Gregory Tervel) Barack Obama, the US president, has said the world must address climate change now or suffer an "irreversible catastrophe", at a high-level conference on climate change at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, on Tuesday opened a climate summit of about 100 leaders saying that failure to reach a new treaty this year on fighting global warming would be "morally inexcusable".
Obama, in what was his first speech at the UN, said that the United States was "determined" to act on global warming, but offered no new proposals that could
jumpstart stalled talks on a UN climate pact.
"Though many of our nations have taken bold actions and share in this determination, we did not come here today to celebrate progress. We came because there is so much more progress to be made.
"We came because there is so much more work to be done.
"Our generation's response to this challenge will be judged by history, for if we fail to meet it - boldly, swiftly, and together - we risk consigning future generations to an irreversible catastrophe," he said.
"The time we have to reverse this tide is running out."
Ban called on presidents, prime ministers and other leaders "to accelerate the pace of negotations and to strengthen the ambition of what is on offer" for a deal at Copenhagen, Denmark, in December.
"Failure to reach broad agreement in Copenhagen would be morally inexcusable, economically short-sighted and politically unwise," he said.
"The science demands it. The world economy needs it."
China pledge
Hu Jintao, China's president, announced significant carbon emissions cuts for the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases.
The Chinese leader said carbon dioxide emissions would be cut by a "notable margin" by 2020 from their 2005 levels.
Obama and Hu are scheduled to meet one-on-one after the summit.
Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Commission president, said talks were "dangerously close to deadlock" and in danger of an "acrimonious collapse", earlier on Tuesday.
But the UN summit and the G20 summit in Pittsburgh later this week seek to add pressure on rich nations to commit to greenhouse gas cuts and to pay for poorer nations to burn less coal and preserve their forests.
Heatwaves, droughts, melting glaciers, loss of the Greenland ice sheet and other dangers are fast approaching, Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), said earlier this week.
Obama's legislative initiatives to reduce carbon emissions in the US have recently been overshadowed by his push for healthcare reform.
But in his speech on Tuesday, he said that the United States had done more over the past eight months to reduce carbon pollution than at any time in history.
"We understand the gravity of the climate threat," the US president said. "We are determined to act. And we will meet our responsibility to future generations."

Show AllBarack Obama, the US president, has said "the world must address climate change now or suffer an irreversible catastrophe", at a high-level conference on climate change at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
How can BO(and his foot print does stink)say he is concerned about climate change when he is creating huge amounts of global warming through all his wasteful war efforts--not only does war, injure, and destroy men, women, children, and property--it causes a great deal of heat and many other earth injuring consequences--he is a fucking hypocrite besides being a war criminal. Let's stop these murderers in their tracks by assembling in DC, and using our wallets to strike against all involved during the first week of October--what do you say?
Well, he did say that "the world must address climate change." He didn't say anything about the United States, did he?
I applaud Obama's use of strong language on this issue, which is very simply one of life and death for hundreds of millions of people.
The problem is, however, will strong action and measures follow the strong language?
Or is this the usual Obama talk with no action or action so diluted by the desire to placate corporate interests that it amounts, well, to something approaching no action at all?
I just read that there is a new study from the Environmental Law Institute and the Woodrow Wilson Int'l Center for Scholars that shows the US gave $72 billion in subsidies to fossil fuels from 2002 - 2008. During that same timeframe only $29 billion was given to renewables, of which approx $16 billion was for corn based ethanol. The largest subsidies for fossil fuels are attributed to tax breaks that aid foreign oil production. How messed up is this? This doesn't even include the costs of the negative externalities that result from fossil fuels such as pollution and war. Maybe Obama could eliminate these subsidies as a good first step to reducing our carbon impact but I doubt that's going to happen.
Obama mewls soporiphic soliloquies as the US machine rapes the world and US citizens too. Unless they are the filthy rich. His mewlings facilitate the rape; "there there, just hold still, it won't hurt if you do what I say."
He has not kept one promise.
It is as though the day he was inaugurated some spooks sat him down, showed him how he was blackmailed and owned, how his orders would come from the Pentagon, Tel-Aviv, and Wall Street.
He promised more Drones in Pakistan.
Quite so, pardon. Nifty too their vastly escalated deployment as the ISI directly assists the Taliban.
Further nifty, 200 nuclear weapons beholden to Allah and the ISI is unacceptable. Will we try to grab them?
There is a lot of talk about how "expensive" carbon targets will be. They are only expensive if you try to meet them and keep the private auto as well. Fortunately, most people want free public transit, which will lead to the abolition of the private auto.

Obama is a complete sellout. We have a financial crisis, we have a health care crisis, we have globalization and manufacturing crisis and all of these are more important than some misguided ecological adventures. Obama made the former worse, now is the time to use the environment as a source of profits for his masters.
Ecologists are hypocrites. They never propose any real solution to ecological problems. China is the world's biggest polluter (INCLUDING CO2) but they are exempt from control, so is India and other large countries. The result is that business moves there and the pollution continues. Talk about hypocrisy.
The so cold ecology movement is a bunch of leeches who do everything to derail any solution to the environmental problems. It's greedy self interest on their part - if the problems were resolved, there would be no need or funding for ecology pundits.
Physicists have shown that fast breeders and fusion are the only solution for CO2-free energy production. The eco-terrorist come up with ridiculous and false scaremongering to derail these solutions and waste all the money on non-solutions. Can you imagine, if we had no eco problems, the eco-terrorists would not get payed for munching the same old fertilizer over and over again.
Disgusting, greedy, selfish environmentalists posing as our "friends". They are much worse than even Obama. I dare you, ecology "leaders" and "pundits" - give up you government funding, give up your NGO grants and your rich daddy inheritance then get off our cars and go live without energy. Call me to take pictures. Can you imagine Gore and the environmentalists in Congress/government living that way? Can you imagine the NGO's rich sponsors living that way? Stinky hypocrites all of them.
I suppose you're in a library somewhere, using a public computer that was already turned on, so you're not really part of the problem. I suppose you walk to your unheated cave and eat roots and berries raw. Well, good for you.
I'm an inventor, and I don't like climate change. I propose to develop prototypes of my inventions. My inventions inexpensively heat buildings, grow algae for biodiesel at competitive prices, move people around at least as well as cars, and create cheaper solar electricity.
The Obama Administration has been useless to me and has just wasted my time. Those who work for the administration need to wake up.
You, Arktig, are apparently a boiler room blogger hired by Exxon's ad agency to hate environmental advocates every chance you get. Real jobs are pretty hard to find, aren't they, Arktig?
Stupid comment. Mean spirited and full of sweeping allegations like...
"Physicists have shown that fast breeders and fusion are the only solution for CO2-free energy production".
Only solution? Sounds like an ad for nuclear energy.
Joe
How can physicists have "shown" that energy can be created in no other way? You can't even phrase such a statement to *sound* scientific.
What environmentalists in Congress? Surely you don't mean the Congress of the United States?
What does what Gore would or wouldn't live with have anything to do with most of the rest of us?
At least you have 0 pegged.
God you are such an idiot.
Wonder what's up here with obama pounding out once forbidden rhetoric about the DIRE consequences of human interference with the 'climate'(really the environment)but now either his handlers have allowed an outburst of obviousness that just doesn't match what the oligarchy is for, and I hardly believe that the two worlds that the countries of this plant live under are coming together as one in a huge kumbaya moment, and from obama's previous complicit oligarchial beneficial actions, I just don't think he has the temerity to break away from his puppet masters.
The elites are banking on the the people going back to sleep soon after hearing the crash and the siren. They know something would be amiss if they didn't hear the siren. Never mind that it's only a foley sound effect. You may go back to sleep now. Leave that needle in your arm so the elites may continue to dispense your material opiates.
You might be right about going back to sleep, as a matter of fact, even if this were posted in the MSM venues, I doubt very many of those dunderheaded vegetables comprehended the story much less read it as I am sure there were much more interesting celebrity stories or sports shows to keep that needle in their arm.
This article asserting Obama gives a shit about climate change is nothing more than double speak.
Apparently Obama has a vested interest in saying one thing out one side of his mouth while watering down policy which actually might make a difference. This is nothing more than propoganda.
Now read what Obama is doing out the other side of his mouth via action from another CD article:
http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2009/09/15-9
Ending war is one simple way to stop wasting fuel and resources and stop ruining land, animals, plants and people.
Joe
I second that wholeheartedly.
insane hypocrisy.... If they were actually serious about dealing with climate issues, they would stop by ending the massive war effort in Afghanistan etc.
Ohh Boy!
What convoluted ideas are they thinking up now.
Good point about the subsidies to Big Oil. Big subsidies to dirty nukes too. Renewables?
We need a lifestyle change if we are going to reverse the trend.
Power generation by nuclear fusion sounds like the most promising long term solution. Power from the sun sounds like the most practical. Both deserve the subsidies that fossil and dirty nukes get!
I am curious about China's proposal! What will they do to reduce emissions.
It's not only emissions that's threatening our future, it's our consumption on the earth's resources and poisoning the oceans!
Instead of promoting birth control, the intelligent and humane solution to the global overpopulation that is causing global warming, conservatives resort to the most profitable one, killing people off.
While the religious right keeps churning out 5+ kids/family
"The Chinese leader said carbon dioxide emissions would be cut by a "notable margin" by 2020 from their 2005 levels."
A "notable margin" , in 11 years? Very precise. Today, China is building at least one coal plant per week, how does that square with their pledge? Unless they retrofit the stations with Martian anti-pollution-ators given to them by visiting aliens...(kinda haven't been invented yet)
So the science that says were are already screwed, will face mass exodus, starvation, skin cancer, draught, just doesn't square with these pledges of "notable" actions, some time in the future.
I think it really will take Americans and Chinese people seeing for themselves the environmental changes. Maybe our brains are not geared towards making such sacrifices until we see for ourselves, on a human scale, the ramifications of not altering our behaviour.
We'll all wait for Mr. Do-Nothing, aka Obama the POTUS, to put his money where his mouth is, figuratively of course. The guy is a useless politician, totally compromised and weak. So being a completely inept doer and shaker how does he do anything within the completely corrupt and unworkable joke government structure in the USA? He doesn't, but he does give endless sanctimonious speeches and he seems to enjoy being a parent. To bad being such a hapless leader he'll share in the responsibility of leaving his kids a potential hell. Now that's change, I don't believe in but I know will probably happen, eh.
'Ban called on presidents, prime ministers and other leaders "to accelerate the pace of negotiations and to strengthen the ambition of what is on offer"'
Huh? Never mind. Don't tell me. Nonsense can't be explained. Dear leaders are spewing nonsense to obscure what everyone understands intuitively that we need to do: All governments must implement a program now to reign in elite ambitions, manifest in various ways, with labels such as "laissez-faire capitalism", "great games", the "economic growth imperative", and the "freedom thing".
In the USA one of the key conceptual elements driving global warming and destruction of 2/3 of all species in less than fifty years is the "freedom thing", that thing they all hate us for, so we have to fight them over there so we don't have to fight them here. Freedom to pursue petro-fried luxuries and conveniences, cuz the all-powerful said we could, they said it cuz they want to scoop the cream off the top of the munny churn, and they have, and you see them build artificial islands in the shape of palm trees off the coast of Dubai, with US mercenaries buying in with their socialized military loot from the no-bid contracts.
They intend to create more funny munny out of thin air and hand it interest-free to those who will reliably create more petro-fried munny churns, and all the high-energy stuff like portland cement, virgin aluminum, and petro-corn. Stuff we don't need, but the godzilla monster needs to grow itself as a living entity, what all living entities do. Feed the monster. You'll prosper too.
I will boldly predict one thing:
while at the moment China is "busy" turning itself into the world's main industrial and economic power - it is ALREADY taking immense steps on a national scale to eventually replace dependence on polluting energy . notwithstanding its coal-production - which is a vestige of its having been "behind" - it is nonetheless ALREADY FAR AHEAD of the United States in retrofiting its economy towards better , more efficient and less polluting means.
so i predict that - in the end - it is CHINA that will have been well ahead of the United STates in this matter...and likely will end up "reserving" its oil holdings for other advanced technologies as its MASSIVE solar power projects go online to gradually replace over-dependence on oil. CHINA of all nations would know that it has to be done this way , if for no other reason than that its OWN OIL holdings and dependence gives it the PERFECT reason to "reserve" use of oil for OTHER future purposes that are more efficient and less polluting as its own technology and science increases pace - which is ALSO one of its massive projects.
in the meantime - the world's MAIN polluter - and whose citizens's LIFESTYLES consume at least 4 - 10 times MORE than a comparable CHINESE citizen -- the world's USA of 300 million - compared to china's 1.4 Billion - that produces 1/4th of the world's pollution
is WHERE EXACTLY in this position on global warming?........
OBAMA's promises AREN'T EVEN CLOSE to what the chinese president - HU JINTAO spoke of , CONSIDERING that it is the USA that has LED and MAINTAINS the POLLUTION of the world.
as of this year - China has already NATIONALLY MANDATED imported cars to BE highly fuel efficient or they can NOT be sold in China...unless the buyer is willing to pay VERY high taxes...it has already mandated DOMESTIC production of cars with much higher efficience in fuel AND hybridization and adaptability for future better technologies ....
what ARE AMERICANS DOING? oh -- wait -- they are QUARRELING about "personal choice" in brands and cars and "spending my money as I wish"!! to maintain their lifestyles........
no wonder obama is frightened to say anything for CHANGE!
americans shouldn't be complaining about "the chinese NOT offering ENOUGH offset"
they should FIRST LOOK AT THEIR OWN NEIGHBORHOODS with their INEFFICIENT CARS and their CHRISTMASY neons and lights in every town and corner and their own Lawnmowers and their Jacuzzis....and their own Yachts and Jet Planes...and their uncountable "private" diversions that ALL CONSUME FAR FAR MORE than several countries PUT TOGETHER doing their WORST to pollute!
'and we will meet our responsibility to future generations'
and with our current track record will more than likely be a generation of amoeba...............
(minus the 'e')

That's right. Production takes energy. China or US or whoever is producing/exporting WILL pollute unless we use better power generation technology. Exporting production to China only shifts the balance of power to our detriment and INCREASES pollution. Also note Juntao "pledged" !!! They are exempt from pollution and any such "pledge" is mud in the eyes.
@all those who tried to baselesly criticise me:
If you are en environmentalist and can't propose a working solution to the problem of energy production - you ARE a hypocrite. Go study the sciences and find a solution. Until that happens, you ARE hypocrites. I proposed one, it is available today and there are working power plants using it. The only reason it is not used more is because it's sidelined by selfish, power-hungry environmentalists who salivate at the prospect of becoming bureaucrats ruling over the rest of us. Yours is not a solution, it's extreme selfishness and corruption.
Again - what a fool.
The solution is to live WITHIN the Earth, not on top of her.
Your "solution" is yet more technological HUBRIS.
IT IS RIGHT FOR THE LEADERS TO SAY THE WORDS NOW.
AFTER THE FIRST MAJOR CLIMATE INCIDENT, THE WORDS WILL RING MIGHTY HOLLOW.
AND MOST PEOPLE WILL HAVE OTHER IMMEDIATE PRIORITIES...
A STUDY OF THE IPCC/GORE ICE CORE DATA CHART WILL REVEAL TO YOU HOW CLIMATE HAS CHANGED IN TIMES PAST, AND HOW IT IS LIKELY TO CHANGE THIS TIME.
A LOOK AT THE SCIENTIFIC OPINION OF DRURY, CHAPMAN and OTHERS IN "THE GREAT ICEAGE", WILL TELL YOU WHEN WE MAY EXPECT THAT CHANGE.
"UNDER A GREEN SKY" WILL SHOW YOU ARCHEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE OF THE TYPE OF CHANGE WE CAN EXPECT.
THE STATE/CORPORATE PROFITCIRCUS IS PLAYED OUT. THE GAME IS NEW. THE RULES ARE DIFFERENT.
MOST OF THE PEOPLE AT THE TOP OF THE EXISTING SYSTEM NEED TO BE CHANGED OUT. THEIR SKILLS AND PRIORITIES ARE INAPPROPRIATE TO THE TASKS WE FACE.
AND IT NEEDED TO HAPPEN YESTERDAY.
This kind of article should mention 0's actions relative to the issue in question. So we might read "0 urges climate change action or we're doomed, backs big coal and wars to continue burning hydrocarbons" - something like that.
It makes for a nice, crisp comparison.
Once again Obama talks the talk.
And once again, all he does is talk.
He was not put in the big chair to make things happen.
He is there to stage manage the collapse.
The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can get on with the business of staying alive.
Walk in peace.
Hilarious hypocrisy
