U.S. intelligence released a dramatic video last Thursday, supposedly taken by an Israeli spy, that purportedly showed North Korean technicians helping build a nuclear reactor in Syria.
The reactor was destroyed seven months ago by Israeli warplanes.
Until now Israel and the U.S. have remained silent about the attack. Syria claimed a warehouse was hit, but curiously said nothing more about what was an act of war. Washington offered no proof the reactor, if it was one, would have produced weapons rather than electric power. U.S. and Israeli intelligence have long stated Syria had no nuclear weapons capabilities.
Vice-President Dick Cheney and fellow neocons forced the CIA to release the James Bondish video in an effort to sabotage an impending six-nation agreement to end North Korea's nuclear program. They bitterly oppose the deal for being too soft on Pyongyang. Neocons long have worried the possibility of North Korea selling nuclear technology to Arab states posed a potential threat to Israel.
This mysterious imbroglio also is being used by Israel's rightwing Likud Party, a close ally of U.S. neocons, to attack political rival Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his Kadima Party.
BACK-CHANNEL TALKS
Olmert has been involved in Turkish-brokered, back-channel peace talks with Syria for years. Likud and its U.S. allies are determined to sabotage any deal with Damascus that would return the Golan Heights, which Israel conquered in the 1967 war, to Syria. The Likudniks also sought to derail efforts by former U.S. president Jimmy Carter to encourage the Israeli-Syrian talks, and get Israel and the militant Palestinian movement, Hamas, to talk.
Under the purported deal, Israel would return the Golan Heights in exchange for Damascus' agreement to sever its close links with Iran, Lebanon's Hezbollah, and Hamas. Syria also would grant Israel important water rights. The fate of up to 250,000 Syrian inhabitants driven from Golan remains uncertain.
Israel, backed by the Bush administration, certainly has been using the carrot of a return of Golan to entice Syria away from Iran. But there is also a big stick: Ever-stronger threats of a U.S.-Israeli attack on Syria. Israel's September attack on Syria was a clear warning.
Cheney and fellow militarists are pushing hard for attacks on Syria, Lebanon and Iran before President George W. Bush leaves office. Neocons have flocked to Sen. John McCain's banner -- in spite of Hillary Clinton's vow to "obliterate" Iran if it attacked Israel with nuclear weapons. They believe U.S. attacks on Arab states and/or Iran would prove decisive in winning the presidency for McCain this November. A U.S. attack on Syria could well be the first step of a broader air war against Lebanon and Iran.
SYRIAN REACTOR
Meanwhile, Cheney and allies in Congress and the media are also using the Syrian reactor hubbub to undermine efforts by the U.S. state department, a primary hate object for neocons, to implement the nuclear weapons freeze with North Korea. State department boss Condoleezza Rice has run for cover, leaving her chief negotiator with North Korea to twist in the wind.
As the latest furor builds over the nefarious North Korean, we should remember that this scare story comes from the same Washington fib factory that manufactured all the alarms and "evidence" about Saddam Hussein's non-existent weapons of mass destruction and links to al-Qaida.
North Koreans are pretty scary, but their nuclear capabilities and the threat they supposedly pose have been exaggerated. South Korea and European intelligence agencies, for example, are cautious about Washington's claims about North Korea and Syria.
The New York Times revealed last week what this column has long said: The Pentagon has duped Americans and Canadians by organizing a bunch of retired U.S. generals -- mislabelled "independent military experts" -- to shill for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Watch these rent-a-generals again prostitute themselves on TV by promoting the administration's party line about the great Syrian nuclear menace.

As a virulent anti-Zionist, I have become more sympathetic with peace-seeking Israelis over the years as I see what our own government does daily in our name.
Prior to the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq, the world witnessed the largest anti-war demonstrations in history. Our government (and media) feigned deafness.
Now we sit here helplessly wondering if this same criminal administration will decimate yet another Muslim country for Israeli hegemony and oil.

A week from today, May Day, on the 1st, the ILWU (longshoreman's union) are shuting down all 26 ports on the west coast for one day, from the Mexican to the Canadian border as a workers' protest against this illegal occupation of Iraq. All working people are cordially invited to take that day off from work in solidarity. I'm taking off and going to the San Francisco rally next Friday. Without effort, nothing changes. The Republican/Democrat Crime Family loves the anti-war protesters that stay on the computer rather than take to the streets.
WE THE PEOPLE, the working class, have the POWER to create positive change by withholding our labor. It's that simple!

Absolutely right, Unchained, and a record number of officers have quit the Israeli military in protest of the Ohmert government's aggressive neocon policies, particularly in Lebanon and against the Gaza Strip Palestinians. They know, as many here in the US do as well, that the blowback from an angry Arab Street united in hatred for Israel and the US is going to cause more violent attacks against both. It will also inflate the ranks of terrorist groups -- a convenient self-fulfilling prophecy for the demented neocon finger-waggers who want to nuke Iran to supposedly keep Israel safe.

Could the two be related? Think about it in context of article and the ongoing sabotage by the war hawks/neocons/AIPAC of any attempt of Syria/Hezbollah/Hamas dialogue.

A cursory glance will show the absurdity of this assertion -- James Schlesinger and Henry Kissinger have dual citizenship? You must be joking...
If the Repubs actually think attacking Syria, Iran or Lebanon would win the election for McCain, maybe the Dems should get one or two national polling companies to do a poll. I think it would be an eye opener - I think the vast majority of Americans would be opposed to that and a poll would clearly show it. It's one way to prevent an attack on Iran or Syria.

Dangerous Crossroads: US Sponsored War Games

US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) has announced the conduct of major war games under Vigilant Shield 2008 (VS-08).
Vigilant Shield 2008 (15 to 20 October, 2007) is designed to deal with a "terrorist" or "natural disaster" scenario in the United States. The operation will be coordinated in a joint endeavor by the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security.
Yet, VS-08, which includes a massive deployment of the US Air Force resembles a war-time air scenario rather than an anti-terrorist drill. The VS-08 war games extend over the entire North American shelf. Canadian territory is also involved through Canada's participation in NORAD. (See Nazemroaya, October 2007)
These war games are being conducted at an important historical crossroads, amidst mounting US pressures and threats to actually declare a "real war" on Iran.
VS-08 is predicated on the doctrine of preemptive warfare, with a vie to protecting the Homeland. The war games are coordinated with anti-terrorist drills directed against presumed Islamic terrorists.
Moreover, the announcement by NORTHCOM of the VS-08 war games-anti-terror drills coincided with a declaration by the Bush administration in early September that military action against Iran is being contemplated at the highest echelons of the US government and Military:
"President George W Bush and his inner circle are taking steps to place America on the path to war with Iran, .. Pentagon planners have developed a list of up to 2,000 bombing targets in Iran, ... Pentagon and CIA officers say they believe that the White House has begun a carefully calibrated programme of escalation that could lead to a military showdown with Iran. (Quoted in The Sunday Telegraph, 16 September 2007).
VS-08 is a large scale military exercise to be conducted over North America and the Northern Pacific Ocean, extending westwards towards the Far East borders of Russia and China:
"USNORTHCOM's primary exercise venues for VS-08 include locations in Oregon, Arizona and a cooperative venue with USPACOM in the Territory of Guam. NORAD's aerospace detection and defense events will take place across all the exercise venues, to exercise the ability to mobilize resources for aerospace defense, aerospace control, maritime warning, and coordination of air operations in a disaster area." (PNC, October 2007)
Both the war games under VS-08 as well as the domestic antiterrorist drills involve the participation of Canada, Britain and Australia:
"VS-08 and National Level Exercise 1-08 will provide local, state, tribal, interagency, Department of Defense, and non-governmental organizations and agencies involved in homeland security and homeland defense the opportunity to participate in a full range of exercise scenarios that will better prepare participants to prevent and respond to national crises. The week before Gen. Petreaus spoke to Congress, Gen. Odem spoke to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He once again presents a very well informed assessment of the situation in Iraq with a clear imperative for the US to get out asap. There are few people better qualified to do this.
His other articles are well worth reading : "Victory is not an Option" and "Cut and Run? - You Bet! Why American Must Get Out of Iraq Now". (I love the way he cuts to the chase. Gen. Fallon is even more blunt. He called Gen. Petreaus "an ass-kissing little chicken shit". Maybe we should send Fallon a thank you note.)
One wonders where our Congress people get their information. Wouldn't it be satisfying to make the Senators sit down, read this, and then publically answer for their actions?

He testified on April 2, 2008, before Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Iraq. His statements are devastating to Bush's failed war policy and the arguments for prolonging the war.

About Hillary & "obliterate" -- I'm surprised that Hillary supporters haven't begun using the argument that she was only using this kind of language to "preempt" McCain. In other words, her dumbass supporters could claim she's really a "pragmatic peace candidate" who knows that Bush may well attack Iran in October, and & that this could "prove decisive in winning the presidency for McCain this November." Therefore (by this twisted logic), Hillary is simply trying to position herself in a way that would yield little advantage to McCain, should events move in that direction.
So you see, Hillary is truly an "antiwar" candidate who's only being forced to talk tough, in the cause of peace(!!) // This kind of argument is a natural for those who always try to dismiss Dem Party collaboration with Republicans as merely doing what's pragmatically necessary to win elections.
In the larger view, though, it's a succinct illustration of the mechanics used to justify the Dem Party's continuing movement towards the right.

That's right boys and girls. Bush fires the Admiral who actually opposed him on attacking Iran, and replaces him with his yes man and pr prop from Iraq. And Obama just fawns all over him. Doesn't even signal that there are 'tough questions' to ask. Just acts like the team player him and all the leading Dems are and ok's this step to the next war.
Judge them by their actions. When the US has high public officials that put the security of another nation as high or higher than their own, then the US has a problem.
Israeli is a big boy now. It doesn't need $5 billion a year of our tax money, nor the 4000 dead Americans and $3 trillion that the Iraq war has cost us, to be spent on them. In fact, peace in the middle east would be more likely if the Israelis had to stand on their own.

About this "dual citizenship" - i did some web searching, and found that this claim is based on the fact that Israel grants the "right of return" automatically to anyone who is Jewish (there are some details but basically that is what it works out to). So anyone who is Jewish can "return" to Israel and be automatically granted Israeli citizenship.
So, the supposed claim that all these persons in positions of power in the US are "dual citizens" of Israel, is simply to point out that all these persons are Jewish.
Which does not mean that i love Doug Feith or Paul Wolfowitz or any of the neocons, or that i trust them to run the USA, or that i believe any particular thing they say about anything. Nor does it mean that i doubt that the foreign policy of the US is distorted by support for the state of Israel.
But these truths do not require me to believe distortions and scare stories that are bellowed and repeated. Just because someone is called a "dual citizen" of the US and Israel (actually meaning that they are a US Jew) does not prove anything about their ideology or their loyalty. Give me a fact-based argument, not Jew-hatred.
And as for loyalty - i am a US citizen, and i am a citizen of no other state, and i am not "loyal" to this hateful war-mongering madness that calls itself patriotism. The United States of America has centuries of hatred and genocide and slavery and imperialism and mass murder and war, without these "neocons" to blame for the vast majority of it. Hey, can I ask a question? How is it possible that 250 million Americans, most of whom went to school, can be so easily manipulated? Why can't they see through the carpetbaggers and artful politicians? I mean, it's not as if they are that clever or that good at acting.
