WASHINGTON

Following the news that President Biden nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, Varshini Prakash, Executive Director of Sunrise Movement, released the following statement:

"Today, we congratulate President Biden for following through on his promise to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court, and for making a truly historic pick in Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. We are excited for Judge Brown Jackson to sit on the court - and look forward to seeing her vocal commitment to racial, social, and environmental justice in her confirmation hearings.

"As the SCOTUS hearing on EPA vs. West Virginia looms, we are also sobered by the reality that even if Judge Brown Jackson is approved, her appointment won't change the fact that the Clean Air Act could be gutted, likely allowing SCOTUS to have veto power over future federal policy, and Roe v. Wade may be overturned. That is an existential threat to our generation.

"It is unacceptable and undemocratic that the makeup of the court does not represent the majority will of the people. That's why we must expand the court if we're going to protect climate justice, reproductive justice, and ensure the government is working for us."

It is less than one week away from when the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments for West Virginia v. EPA. This case, decided by a Republican stacked court, will define the U.S.'s ability to cut greenhouse gas emissions, and could go as far as allowing SCOTUS to have "perpetual veto over federal policy." Sunrise Movement partnered with Take Back the Court on this report breaking down how we got to this point and the stakes in West Virginia v. EPA.

Sunrise Movement is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
