Federal Court Blocks Title 42 Expulsions of Families

A federal court today blocked the government from expelling families from the United States under "Title 42." The order takes effect in 14 days.

The American Civil Liberties Union, Texas Civil Rights Project, RAICES, Center for Gender & Refugee Studies, Oxfam, ACLU of Texas, and ACLU of the District of Columbia are challenging the Title 42 expulsions.

The policy, initiated by the Trump administration, restricts immigration at the border based on an unprecedented and unlawful invocation of the Public Health Service Act, located in Title 42 of the U.S. Code.

WASHINGTON

A federal court today blocked the government from expelling families from the United States under "Title 42." The order takes effect in 14 days.

The American Civil Liberties Union, Texas Civil Rights Project, RAICES, Center for Gender & Refugee Studies, Oxfam, ACLU of Texas, and ACLU of the District of Columbia are challenging the Title 42 expulsions.

The policy, initiated by the Trump administration, restricts immigration at the border based on an unprecedented and unlawful invocation of the Public Health Service Act, located in Title 42 of the U.S. Code.

The policy is also unnecessary; as public health experts have noted, the U.S has the resources and tools it needs to safely process people seeking protection under our asylum laws.

Omar Jadwat, director of the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project, had the following reaction to today's ruling:

"President Biden should have ended this cruel and lawless policy long ago, and the court was correct to reject it today."
