Common Cause Urges U.S. House Members to Support Select Committee to Investigate January 6th Insurrection

Common Cause is urging every member of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote "yes" on a resolution to create a select committee to investigate the attack January 6th on the United States Capitol by a violent mob attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

WASHINGTON

Common Cause is urging every member of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote "yes" on a resolution to create a select committee to investigate the attack January 6th on the United States Capitol by a violent mob attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The letter notes that Common Cause plans to key-vote final passage of H.Res. 503 to create the select committee to investigate the deadly insurrection in our next Democracy Scorecard, which we send to our 1.5 million members.

"The American people deserve to know the truth and the causes behind what happened January 6th when a violent, racist mob stormed the United States Capitol in an attempt to keep Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election," said Common Cause president Karen Hobert Flynn. "We need a definitive accounting of that shameful day, which many have tried to whitewash - including even some Members of Congress. The mob that marched through the halls of Congress that day with Confederate flags, bear spray, cudgels, and zip ties, was attacking our democracy and the voters who elected Joe Biden President - especially Black and brown voters, who turned out in record numbers to cast their ballots in the midst of a global pandemic. What happened on January 6th must never happen again. The select committee will ensure that the American people know exactly what happened and why, and take steps to safeguard the peaceful transfer of power going forward."

The letter points out that the creation of the select committee is necessary to determine the facts and causes of the attack after a minority of the U.S. Senate filibustered the bipartisan House-passed proposal for an independent 9/11-style commission to investigate the insurrection. The select committee will help develop a full public record and narrative to prevent the significant dis- and misinformation that that has been disseminated concerning the violent attack at the Capitol on January 6th. The select committee will also be tasked with making recommendations to prevent future violence aimed at disrupting the peaceful transfer of power after elections.
